Hi.

First, sorry for the improvised English. It's not my first language.

My name is Greg, I live in Israel, and will be a soldier in about a week from now.

As you can probably guess, I've only recently discovered myself to be an INTP (and basically the whole MBTI thing altogether).

Here's the chart for the protocol.

117703.png

What really caught my attention about this particular test, was a description of the INTP personality ( http://www.typelogic.com/intp.html ), which completely blew my mind with it's accuracy. This is probably the best description of me I've ever read/heard anywhere.

Anyhow, one thing lead to another, and thanks to Google I ended up here.

After lurking here for a short while, I was happy to discover that I'm not alone in my "peculiarities". It appears as though many people here share the same problems as I do, particularly the "chronic" lack-of-motivation one.

Anyway, just to start off, what do you think about INTPs in the military?
The concerns that I have aren't so "standard", if you know what I mean. For example, I haven't yet been deprived from my "alone time" for any longer than 4-5 days in a row.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure that the army will have quite a positive effect on my motivation problem. After all, that's what any army does best, I guess. Also, I'm going to deal with my fields of interest during service. So my academic curiosity is a big factor too.

Finally, how do you see it? Can you see yourselves in service, and if so, in what position (front/combat or rear/intelligence [like myself])?

Your opinions are very welcome. I couldn't possibly think of any other place to ask these questions in.

Hi! I'm guessing you're familiar with the INTP's hatred for small talk, so please excuse my lack of fluffy welcoming words :D

As to your question... *cringes*
In my own mind, I see the armed forces as the world's capital for SJ types. I would be completely crushed to have to conform to so much tradition and regulation! Nevertheless, I suppose I would enter some branch dealing with sophisticated technology if I had to. I would never go in the front lines.

I cannot say if it would be good for my motivation or not. I think, however, that instead of changing me into a more motivated person, it would probably suffocate me until I got out of that setting - like a fat lady in a corset. Having to adjust to that slim shape will not truly make her any skinnier - it will just suffocate her till she takes it off. :p

Wow living in Israel... I just read about the Israeli troops removing some Israeli's living in the West Bank...so it sounds like their preparing a 2-state resolution. I don't know how I feel about the armed forces, I can still see myself enlisting if worst comes to worst. Anyways, how do you feel about the situation in Israel?? I'd love to hear your unique perspective on it!

Hi and welcome to the forum. May you find interesting and enlightening discussions. ;)

Well, uhm, i think i would have a hard time in the military as well, having to to follow regulations and commands completely.
We do not have many here who were or are in it, though a few. I think Gorgrim is (in Denmark), we have another user from Israel (linsejko) so he probably was in the military as well (if he is old enough, i heard you have to serve two years or so?). One other, from south/southeast asia, but i forgot his name....Perhaps they have some good insight.

Otherwise i'd just say look around, join in discussions and generally get to know yourself better (as is a life task).

Welcome, I hope you have a good time here.

I see no problems with your English. We have several non-native English speakers here, and they all write at least as well as and sometimes better than most native speakers. So far, you don't seem to be any different.

Thanks for your replies, it's nice to see some understanding.

@Auburn,
I realize what you're saying. And while one part of me feels like self control and conformity shouldn't be an issue for me, the other one is quite alarmed about the possibility of the reverse.

@flow,
Israel isn't exactly what you see while watching the news. Most of the time it is as nice and quite here as anywhere else in the world. To put things in perspective, I've lived in Israel since I was 7, and never have I witnessed (with my own eyes) any act of terrorism or war. Most of my high school friends haven't either. I can't say I wasn't affected by such events, but I never had to experience war on my own flesh.

Thanks to the IDF, people who live here lead mostly normal lives, for about 60 years already. That's why I feel compelled to contribute.

As for how I feel about the situation, I guess I can't be too objective about it, so I won't bother to elaborate. I will say one thing, though. The first Israelis didn't have an "absolute right" to settle here (No, I don't take what the bible says literally, or even seriously). However, after 60 years, those who live here today have every right imaginable. For instance, we can't give Syria it's land back. It's currently populated with cities, towns and villages. Before we occupied it, it was empty. Giving it back is simply impossible.

@Ogion,
Yes, you were almost right. The mandatory service period is 3 years for men and 2 years for women.

@Jesin,
Thank you. I guess all those hours spent reading stuff on StumbleUpon have eventually paid off :cool:

Anyway, It seems as though I'm going to enjoy my stay here. Even though my time online will soon become scarce.

P.S
Jesin, is this The Game of Life on your avatar?

I spent six weeks in Israel in the mid 90's and it was one of the best times of my life in some ways. I spent four and a half weeks in a Kibbutz near Qiryat Shemona in the north on an archaelogical dig, and the rest of the time in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It's a fascinating place. As an American, it is amazing to walk through a dig site and pick up a broken piece of pottery that is older than my entire country.

Yay! Someone recognized it without being told!

Specifically, it's an LWSS.

Oh well, you know NoI, you can get that nearly everywhere, only not in the New World....:insert evil smilie:

Ah, keyme, i thought i heard that number, so it was the one for the women ;)
You service is mandatory, you can't easily get out of it, right? In Germany it used to be like that, but nowadays it is very easy to not have to do it. They do not want everyone anyways...
Well, but i think the situations the two countries are in are a little bit different.

Ogion,
Yes, it is mandatory and fairly hard to get out of. Surely, it's possible to present yourself as some kind of a psycho, and they'll let you go. However this will have implications on your civilian life later.

@Tom,

I don't think I should talk about it, so I'll just say it's intelligence/technology related. I guess that's where I can give out my 100%, so to speak.

Hm, yes, but as i said. Your country needs all recruits it can get, i imagine, so this directs different policies.

(First part not important, but...) "I enlist next summer, because I'm a new immigrant."

Nice talking to you via PM, by the way.
