Use a keyboard instead of a pen(cil).

Even with making notes? I was wondering fit here was a special way to hold a pen that stops your hand cramping
If you are writing "too much", then it's probably more than a simple notation :p
But there are pencil grips available (just google).

Try changing the angle of the paper or the height of the desk or the angle you hold your arm at. Changing the position of your arm and wrist may remove tension somewhere and help your hand

Holy crap! Looks like I've been holding my pencil right all these years! And to think my friends scoffed at me...:p

I put out an almost constant stream of notes in class and this causes my hand to cramp. I even have a little callus on the first joint of my middle finger from the pencil resting there all the time. I suspect I apply too much pressure. I have very heavy handwriting.

Perhaps you could try to force your hand to relax a bit.

And me, my mum taught me how to hold them properly because she didn't trust the school to teach me right.
I've got the same callus on my joint, but I think they're actually a growth of bone from pressure being applied for a long time

Number 12 on that diagram is brilliant

I would suggest to take some magnesium..... (not literally). It however should help the working of the nerves.... I had leg cramps before, it was suggested to me.

iso-tonic type sports drinks have magnesium and other minerals that do the same thing, which is probably more convenient than pills. I'm not sure if it would work for hand pain from writing though

I have often wondered if others have faced this issue too. I used to follow number 2 in the chart as I was taught but I found this hurt if you had to do too much writing so I switched to a method that worked for me. This method is a bit more like number 3 in the chart but my thumb joint is much closer to the first joint in my index finger. I also noticed with this method I tend to do a lot of finite movements with my index finger. I also personally find it easier to doodle/draw with this method too.

You could also try not using ballpoint pens or hard pencils... Those always need more pressure than needed when compared to a nice pen that just flows.

It might be the case that you injured your hand. It happens quite often that people get injuries and notice it only weeks later, especially if you do sports or other activities that put a lot of stress on your hands or feet.
