I'm new here. I think psychological typing is one of the coolest things around! I'm an INTP. I usually only spend time on one forum at a time online, and I haven't got any other one running right now, so here I am.

Lawd, but the default theme here (especially the typeface) is hideous.

So that's not a whole lot of meat & potatoes to get a thread going on, so I'll post a mannerism of mine. I'm curious if it's shared by any. Several times a week I'll imagine a certain modern development, be it a specific technology, a particular paragraph or page from a news article, a book, or so on, and imagine how a particular historical figure might react to it, if shown it out of context, as a reverse time capsule.

Typically this will be a news article involving American politics, and the historical figure will be of the Founding Fathers. Or else, science & a scientist. It's great fun, somehow. Supposing what could be inferred about modern civilisation based on only a small artifact, beginning from various perspectives.

Hi

Welcome. WIllie Morris I presume ?* 'Though, at that period expansive facial hair was de rigueur for all young men on the make. Later devolving into bushy moustaches,

"It was 1911, everybody had a moustache." --- "I thought everybody had big sideburns." --- "Just the women."

Corner Gas

A handy selection of still less attractive styles is available on the below left.

I doubt if those damned old rascals would be shocked by anything...

I think that way about modern art. I wonder what Leonardo would say about the Etant donnés for example.

Uh, someone help me out here. Should I have been able to understand any of that?

As for my avatar, there's a subtle clue in my signature.

Thanks to whichever moderator moved my thread.

Welcome!
What is your definition of papist and why do you choose that particular label?

Apologies for not recognizing the chap: I'm not up on 19th century Physicists. I see he attended the High School at Linz which had a good reputation, with other later ... illustrious alumnae; that he was honoured by Franz-Josef; that he illuminated entropy; and that he hanged himself whilst having a pleasant holiday.

Fin-de-siècle Austria really had the most impressive number of depressives evah.

Still, he's a dead ringer for Morris...

I've imagined bringing historical figures to modern times to gauge their reactions (which I guess are mine) and I've also imagined myself going back and trying to explain how the future has developed to same. It's sort of an analytical tool I use quite often and yes, I sometimes bring back a technology or two.

Welcome to the forum!

Oh, I get it. Claverhouse is just a little insane, right? I like him.

As for Papist, I take the moniker on account of being Catholic, but considering Papist a far more phonetically amusing and obscure alternative. It used to be the Protestant's derogatory name for us practitioners of Popery, and thus I accept it with pride, but it's rarely used in that sense any more.

Welcomes received gladly!

Thank you. *makes note*

I understand the most reverend minister of God and ex-First Minister of Northern Ireland, Dr. Ian Paisley plans at the age of 83 to continue his work as MP whenever the next election may be. Ask him.

Doesn't that folded bolt of cloth beside Morris look exactly like some endearing little humanoid ant-eater x lizard in a wee little greatcoat of it's own ?

Ian Paisley? Nasty guy. Right on with a couple of issues, but he's a nut regardless.

& that it does.

I think it looks like a lizard with a long neck - not that it matters...

I don't know if this has been asked or answered, but what does A. A. E. stand for? After after Earth?

Ah. I thought you might have been named after George William Russell.

Unless that's an old joke...

Four names! That's a lot. No hyphens in there?
