This is the first forum I've participated in and I've only been a member since August. It's weird how its affected me and its raised all sorts of questions about why people frequent forums. So why do you visit forums? What do you get out of it? How does it affect your life? What other forums do you visit and what do you get out of them? Maybe you would like to share some stories about your experience of internet forums.

To start off, I have found its given me amazing energy. I am an older member of this forum and I have found it great to be communicating with people of all ages and backgrounds from all over the world. Also, I have finally found a positive outlet for my constant thinking. Instead of focusing inward and being negative, I have found that I can now focus on some challenging conversation which takes up my thinking space - so there's no time to be negative. I have found that it has helped me bring a lot more positive energy to other things in my life. The trouble is that all my friends think I have flipped - none of them do this and regard it somewhat suspiciously. I just think they're stuck in their ways.:)

I think you summed up what I hope to get out of it.
I've participated in a few game forums with offtopics for things like I find here. It seems people here are at considerably more tolerant of differing opinions, less likely to flame, et cetera.
Granted, those are just observations after a day of membership...

But are fairly accurate, given about 3/4 year of experience.

Given my innate lazyness, I find that having a discussion is a good motivation to research and learn new things or go deeper than I would go otherwise. The forum format is very good for this, since you can take your time to think and enrich your words with links, images, etc.

Having a bunch of interesting people like you to do this with is a big plus, of course ;)

i agree with this. a forum, such as this one, is a good place for me to come up with new ideas and challenge my old ones. sometimes my opinions change and other times they are reinforced because of discussions/debates here.

I need a place where I can do this or I'll go crazy (well, I'll start becoming more tired and negative more likely) and I can't get that from my partner. All the little pieces of information I collect over time get put together when I have an solve a problem with it. I just don't have the motivation to look at the information to the extent where I could become skilled with it otherwise.

I've also been a member of gaming forums, but they wear on me after a while. So many people that like to talk, but don't like to listen. I don't get that here and it makes me want to stick around.

The biggest reason why I love forums is because I think way too much for my own good, and my peers aren't particularly interested in what I have to say half the time. This is a great outlet for getting my thoughts out there and having them be listened to, or read, rather.

Since I don't have much spare time, and I have many other interests, I only go to this forum and the INTJ forum.

And I've come to the conclusion that for those who think too much, being totally alone leads to madness. We need a mental outlet.

I believe everyone has summed it up lol, but one differing reason i get on the forum is i have absolutely nothing to do with my time. I like this forum, i have been in a few others but never liked them to begin with or i got bored with them. I feel almost at home on this forum, i feel i can say nearly anything that comes across my mind as long as its a valid opinion, and not only is my opinion valued (at least i am given the impression it is) but it is openly disscused. I Think that posting on this site and having discussions with you guys makes me forget about the problems i have like finding a job, getting a car and many other things. Even though i dont post very often i read alot of what you guys post and then end up thinking about it for a good portion of the day, taking place of my daily worries. Thanks
