Sigmund Freud discusses the ego as between the id and super ego as the mediator of the conscious and unconscious. If we stop and think about what we are doing we are less impulsive in our actions. That is to say we have self control.
We want to act immediately but if we slow down this allows us to get a better grasp of the situation we are in. The reason we would not is that our base emotions compelled us to act a certain way.
My mom has a dog that is excited all the time and moving really fast bump things all the time. She can be calm but this is only in anticipation of the next time she is allowed to be squirmy a lot.
I suppose that the body feels like it needs to move or not move in an imediency.
This is true of children as well. Kids get really excited about things they want to do. They act on what is a false start or they do actions like pressing a button before they are supposed to. The ACT before they think.
I once heard that kids need to get the energy out of their system before they can pause and observe things calmly.
Then it must be that emotions are a kind of energy. Exercise helps regulate it. Most important is to have a stronger force guide it or it goes all over the place. So long as it is not threatening.
Having depression I don't feel like doing much. My body learned that life is threatening if I act on my energy but then the energy needs to go somewhere and I suppose to deal with it the body suppressed the action parts of the brain well continuing the emotional threat response.
That's to say the balance isn't right to function in normal life because parts shutdown and others activate higher than average making life difficult. All because it worked in the past under different conditions but not all places need that to get by.
Depression then is a response (in my case) to eliminate energy because it is dangerous to have to much and so it goes in the opposite direction having not enough.
As different energy states exist we learn how the affect our soundings. We respond with pre learned behavior. Learning new behaviors is difficult when it takes energy to stop and conduct in a manner which is against our emotional drives. Thinking before acting does not feel as good as simply acting. Because actions are directly tied to the body and the body is how people learn best and fastest.
Thus a body that is being held back from learning in the moment is keeping its energy in a different place. This is why exercise helps clear the mind.
Yet we can also experience addiction to thinking as well. Not that it is completely bad to think deeply but the energy is useful away from the body. The norm is depression if the body is not used and do what it wants to do. The mind can be suppressed also and both suppressed together is highly dissociative.
Ego has to understand where energy is and how to direct it. To not react to everything based on pre learned scripts. To not shutdown when the environment is threatening. But to be aware of what is happening. Get the energy in and out as it needs to. Gradually hold the body in a proper position that doesn't go wild once it has come out of active hibernation. To rest as it should, slow down, observe and relax any tension it has.
The mind body connection is important then.
Both follow each other.
To be in control of the ego we need to be in touch with our full system, what it is doing in healthy self regulation.
