Prompted by the question of appearance change, I am curious to know what you consider your core style. I think that the question of appearance change hits on a large component of INTPness and our ability to adjust to various situations, but have you discovered one core style that you come back to time and time again that really defines who you are?

I am classic at heart. When I am dressing merely for myself with no outward influence I will do my shopping at high end classic stores like Talbots, The Loft, etc. I like tailored cuts. BUT, these are not what I generally wear, because I tend to dress to reflect the people around me.

What about you?

I like balance, I like designs that are smooth, and flow well, but don't stand out. It suits me. I search for this style even in my computer themes.

Round sunglasses, jeans, t-shirt, a long (usually plaid) shirt, some kind of jacket in winter times. Clothes are a bit bigger (and longer) than they should be for my size.

It's evolved over time from knee-length denim shorts and T-shirts, to long pants (cargos or jeans) and collared shirts. Simple colours (black, grey, dark blue, kaki, some whites) with mostly plain designs, I tend to avoid anything with a visible labels or logos, there's just something about "brand loyalty" that irks me.

Although I've noticed heavily "branded" clothes tend to be poor quality anyway, but then they're not supposed to outlast the season are they? Personally I’d rather pay a little more for quality cloths that conveniently enough tend not to have overly visible labels. Some more fashionable people may question why I'd pay more for something that doesn’t declare to the world that I have paid more, my reply is thus, if hypothetically I did pay more for clothes of substandard quality, why would I want to advertise my poor judgement?

...Wow, never realised I had such strong opinions about all this.

Oh, and as for sun-glasses, I buy whatever cheap ones I can find that look okay and perform the intended function adequately, I'd like to just by one nice pair and stick with them but I have a long history of breaking and/or losing every pair of sunnies I've ever owned. :o

The betting's open, how long until I break them?
(and no, my room's not yellow, it's just an old webcam)

i've actually tried to "normalize" myself recently because, i dunno, i've just been trying to calm down in general. but that's a very difficult thing to do. i have a looooot of clothes already and not much money to get new ones. so i recently bought a couple pairs of jeans, and that's about the most average looking thing i have in my closet.

@Shoeless: You look almost like Face, he even was quite fond of dino avatars too. Weird coincidence.

Anyway, I prefer serious clothes. Now in summer I wear a poloshirt, jeans and sportcoat while when it's colder I just add my beloved black cashmere cloak.

I feel most comfortable in dark and casual clothes. most of the time I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I'm also very fond of wearing big boots, preferably with steel toe-caps

I think I take a lot of influence from beatniks like Gary Snyder, and Neal Cassady. I prefer a tough pair of boots.. normally cowboy boots with a walking heel or leather wellingtons, tough blue jeans, plain t-shirts (black, white, and gray), and a dose of a few ridiculously large silver rings. Hickory shirts (because of their toughness) and flannel shirts appear when the temp drops below 50. I almost always wear sunglasses.. mostly aviators of various colors. I've kind of got a signature straw hat that looks like a cross between a conical Vietnamese style hat and a cowboy hat. During the winter is when anything standout appears.. I layer heavily, with fingerless gray wool gloves or insulated leather gloves. I normally wear hole filled jeans that show my hole filled long-johns underneath. I also enjoy wearing ugly, often second hand, sweaters in plain colors. I tend to look somewhat like a bum, but my boots are always kind of a sign that I'm not - ray or ostrich skin boots don't get worn by many bums (none that I've seen). My wardrobe is pretty spare, and is mostly geared towards durability. I think I have a pair of slacks and a button-down shirt somewhere.. maybe. A large beard and a shaved head is probably my most common look in those regards, though I've had huge side burns, 3-4 inches long and heavily curled, and a handle-bar moustache for awhile now.

edit: Cogwulf's avatar made me realize that the pipe which is often hanging out of my mouth is part of my appearance.

I dress as comfortably as possible. All of my friends dress up all the time, wearing jackets and ties just for the hell of it. I despise ties, and would rather just wear baggy sweat pants and plain white t-shirts along with some comfortable shoes that I could potentially run/play basketball in. I'm not fashionable, and I make no attempt to be either. I wear lots of jean/hoody combos as well. In high school I definitely dressed more hip hoppish than anything else, and usually sported a baseball cap as well. Now I dress as non hipster as I can, considering I listen to all the hipster music and despise those damn scene kids who just want to dress the part but have no idea why.

I started smoking pipes because I used to live right by Pioneer Square in Portland which has a world-class tobacco shop with one of the very few Master pipe tobacco blenders in the US (1 of 8 or something like that). Top-notch pipe tobacco was actually cheaper for me than cigarettes. I've got a few nice pipes in the 80-300$ range made of exotic hardwoods, all Petersons from Dublin. There's a lot of pipe etiquette that will make you look foolish when around those in the know when you first start smoking them though.. at least that was my experience.

edit: btw, the PS job was obvious ;D

That's brings up a good point for me as well. I used to dress extremely punk rock (plaids, combat boots, liberty spikes, etc).. I still have a few band t-shirts that haven't completely fallen apart, but other than that I've given up on it for a more utilitarian/cheap style.

I'm a big fan of blue jeans with polos or dress shirts. I might throw on a tie (loose, with a button undone on the shirt) every now and then, as well as a nice dress jacket if the weather permits. I like to look nice, but not to the point of infringing upon personal comfort. I'm equally comfortable in all clothes, unless anything is relatively tight, then I feel about ten degrees warmer than comfortable.

Because I have large 'fashion impediments', I generally wear low-cut strappy tops, sometimes layered (a lacy one peeping over the top of a plain one) with either skirts or trousers. I avoid baggy clothes because they make me look fat and actually at 53 I am lucky enough to still have a figure so I like to show it off. I never wear patterned tops but I will wear patterned skirts. I tend to wear well-coordinated colours and like unusual combinations like teal, lime green and vivid pink. I think my style is womanly and on the edge of sexy without being slutty and 'mutton dressed as lamb'. As far as shoes go I don't like girlie shoes at all and will do things like wear a cocktail dress with motorcycle style boots.

When I was young I used to wear all sorts of weird and wonderful clothes - always wanted a totally unique look and didn't want to be categorised so I wore really contrasting styles every day.

I have a rule when I buy clothes which is I never buy anything that makes me look fatter than what I was wearing when I went into the shop.

Actually, that pipe makes you look uncannily like "Bob". Don't steel my Avitar!!

As far as the original question, I almost always wear cheap/free t-shirts and an (open) jacket w/ jeans. When I want to look trendy (not very often), I get out one of my three polo shirts or a short-sleve cotten dress shirt.

Although I've noticed heavily "branded" clothes tend to be poor quality anyway, but then they're not supposed to outlast the season are they? Personally I’d rather pay a little more for quality cloths that conveniently enough tend not to have overly visible labels.
I totally agree with this as well, but logos on free t-shirts don't bother me (I'm always willing to advertise a company I like/don't care about in exchange for a free shirt).

People always see me in Jeans and either a long or short sleeve tee-shirts or warm turtle necks in the cold months. The shirts are mostly plain, sometimes having cool graphics on them. When I was younger I would wear all black more often, though at sometimes that still happens. Nothing amazing. The only difference between that and my own style I wear at home is that I wear grey sweat pants at home. I don't have that much style at all.

At work I only wear work chic Banana Republic clothes and on the weekends I wear slightly more casual but also clothes from the same store. I'm into bold colors and wear business appropriate makeup (light) with a small kick like a tiny bit of bright blue eyeshadow on the corner of my eyes. I upkeep my appearance and ensure I'm always well groomed.

I can be slightly narcissistic but I try to conceal that part of me from those that may misunderstand.

I suppose about 1/3 of the time I am wearing (dark/black) sports like clothes which are confortable and give me freedom of movement. The remaining 2/3 I am wearing some some confortable t-shirt (usually black, but this is changing I do fancy dark green, can do with blue and white some times and now I am starting to wear jeans which I feel are horrible to move around =/, maybe because I am not used to it) or trying now and then something different from (my) usual.

I have a complete and utter lack of style. I own about five t-shirts, 3 black and 2 dark blue (I also hate shirts with logos or designs on the front), all of which are tattered and way to big for me (they're about 6 years old, and I've lost a lot of weight since then). I own two pairs of jeans, one black and one dark blue, both about as old as the t-shirts, faded and threadbare. I have three hooded sweatshirts, once again, too big for me (I have not bought any new clothes since high school). I have a tendency to wear as much clothing as possible, even when it's hot out. I usually have a stocking hat on during the winter (even when in doors). I'd describe my "style" as a mix of grunge, hip hop, and hobo.

I'm all about comfort. In summer I wear shorts and plain tees. 6 black, 2 dark brown, a red, an olive green, 2 tan, 5 greys. In winter I wear sweats around the house and jeans when I go out with usually a sweatshirt and maybe a jacket. I have a pair of khaki pants and one pair of dark slacks that goes with a jacket and tie combo for more formal occasions....which is about twice a year. I also have some dress shirts and polos. I could still wear them but for all I know, moths could have gotten them.

It is really hot where I live, so tank tops, shorts and flip flops are a staple of my wardrobe. I tend to avoid bright colors, because they don't really appeal to me visually. I don't understand why people wear orange....... I don't generally wear skirts, but I'm oddly attached to the long, swishy ones. Guys probably won't understand this, but they are so much fun to walk in.

As far as accessories go I always wear sunglasses out of necessity. I also like having unusual bits of jewelry, especially ear cuffs. I used to have a dragon that wrapped around my ear that I absolutely adored. As a rule I don't wear expensive jewelry since I tend to lose things (it also just doesn't make sense to me). Case in point, my awesome dragon. :(

My attitude towards fashion/style has probably changed more than any other aspect of myself. When I was a kid, I was really into having cool shoes, putting on nice clothes etc. In high school, I became extremely blase about it, partly because I thought that was the cool rocker-dude thing to do (little did I realise how important fashion is in the rock scene). After high school, I was intent on getting over my depressive tendencies, one of which was being apathetic towards fashion. So I started wearing "good" clothes, but they were kind of generic and they didn't fit in with any persona. Slowly however I refined my look, adding more bohemian type stuff to my wardrobe, in particular I liked (and still liked) leather jackets. I wanted to look like a rocker so I had my ears pierced, would wear things like tight undershirts with an unbuttoned shirt. I always liked looking just a little different to everyone else (and I guess it's the same with my social personality - I like to sit just on the fringe).

Very recently, though, I've become kinda sick of looking cool, it doesn't feel congruent anymore. I used to wear contact lens all the time because I didn't want to look nerdy, but now I'm proud to look scholarly and flaunt it with these cool new thick-rimmed glasses. I don't want people to look at me and think, "oh there's a cool hip dude who's probably in a band", I want them to look at me and think, "that guy looks intelligent". That way, when I inevitably start ranting about philosophical topics in conventional small talk scenarios, it won't seem too out of place.

T-Shirts and jeans, ah. I also wear singlets and shorts in the summer time. Skirts at home because I don't feel comfortable wearing them in public.

I am strangely attracted to long jackets. I have a knee-length one that's brown with a soft, velvety feel to it and a long leather one.

I wear a lot of unique jewelry too. I have a silver engraved necklace that has a working clock inside it, a replica of a Sleipnir necklace found in Iceland (which I bought at a museum) and a necklace with a scooter and a globe that actually spins, etc. In general I only buy them if it's unique and interesting. :)

I'm quite the chameleon when it comes to clothes. I've ended doing anything from dressing in a "rockish" way, to very artsy and bohemian, to very sharp and classy. Now that I'm not in any defined group when it comes to fashion, I'm just going casual, with elements of all the aforementioned styles.

A common vein would be my love of color, though. There's always a pop of color somewhere on my person. For example, during the colder months of the year, I almost always wore a rainbow colored scarf, no matter what the outfit. Even when I was going "lazy" with a huge grey sweatshirt, I complemented it with purple pants.

I generally wear jeans, teeshirt, and a large plaid flannel shirt. I have yet to replace my boots, but when I still had them I would usually be wearing them.

I like solid colors or muted patterns. I don't like really bright colors. Recently I've developed quite a collection of scarves.

T-shirts and jeans. Preferably blue.

I totally love wearing a denim t-shirt with jeans... And would totally do so if people were so "annoyed"/"attention giving" about it.

I have kind of a skater/musician style. I'm a female but I wear guys clothes exluding the shoes. Khaki cargo shorts or baggie jeans, normally a black t-shirt but I'll change that up occasionally. My clothes are generally very plain but I wear colorful accessories: a wristband, socks, hat, and shoes(either skater style or nike air forces) that all match.

My style is comfort mostly. I also make a very conscious choice of not wearing anything with a label, saying or graphic I find ridiculous I can't stand shirts that have the name of the company on it. I feel like a walking advertisement. I made this choice way back in high school, where my style was purely plain colored t-shirts and jeans.

I now enjoy wearing hawaiian shirts. I like the looseness of it, and I find the colors fun... and I like the way buttoned shirts with loose collars feel.

I'm pretty sensitive so material is important, and I don't like wearing layers... it feels much too tight. I also don't like long sleeves even in the winter... another sensitivity issue... I hate feeling something around my wrist. Same goes for watches... I never wear them.

Within this scope I like to look good, but personal comfort reigns king...

As far as fashion types, I am kind of undefined. I have been called preppy, retro, and punky, with the very same outfits. I wear what is comfortable to me. But I basically wear the same thing every day. Mostly because I am picky, and also because I want to look nice as cheaply as possible. A knee-length skirt or dress with lots of movement in the legs is my staple, though I have one full-length skirt as well. Most of them have some kind of bold design in neutral colors. And a white, black, or brown tank top with the skirts. I usually only wear one color at a time. black and white with a color (usually green, yellow, or red), or brown and white. If it is cool enough out (under 90 degrees), I wear a cropped or full-length cardigan over the tank top. Flip-flops when I can get away with them and flats when I am forced to wear shoes (I would live my entire life bare-foot if it weren't for the stupid shoe-police). My wardrobe allows me to have very little clothes, compared to the number of outfits I can put together. Any top can go with nearly any skirt and all the clothes and coats and shoes I own can easily fit in a trash bag (for moving).

I hate wearing pants, though I do own a pair of jeans. They are just so restrictive and feel so icky on my legs. I hate shoes for the same reason. They just make me feel confined. I don't even own socks. They are gross and chunky. I have to have a specific neck line. I don't like to show cleavage, but a high neck line makes me look like a freak. So I go as low as I can without seeing any boob when I look down. Tank tops are the perfect, cheap solution. And in the winter, I just throw on a knee-length wool peacoat, and some rainboots (if the snow it high enough that shoes won't suffice), and I am all winterized.

I love hiking boots / heavy shoes of any sort, wearing a hat of many varieties, though as of now it's a bucket hat and fedora.

Beyond that, it's usually just dark or neutral colors. Blue, Green, and Brown are the only colors I really wear, and they're all very dark. The rest are black / white / gray. Pants are always preferred to be long, usually khaki, black, or a dark pair of jeans. Bootcut pants and fitted shirts.

I tend to like that look of pants widening down at the shoes, like bellbottoms or whatever those were in the 70's xD. For some reason it ties in with wearing bigger / heavier shoes too, dunno why I have such a fondness for it.

Also, no labels, whatsoever, or designs for that matter. Just simple, plain colors.

My love of men's hats is boundless.

I wear jeans, a t-shirt, and an old wool fedora that I tricked my male friend out of buying so that I could get it instead. :D As for footwear, I tend to wear out footwear quickly. So, I usually just wear cheap sneakers in the winter since I know that I'll wear them out in a couple of months anyway. In the summer I try to find sandals that don't give me blisters. Since I live in a very wet town, this means I tend to have soggy socks and damp pants up to the knee for much of the day. On top of that goes a green velvet jacket or in really cold weather a dark gray wool peacoat that's several sizes to big for me and I tied back with a scarf years ago so it would fit better.

My friends tell me I dress like a man stuck in curvy girl's body.<---I'm a bit disturbed by this assessment. One friend summed up my style when he said, "I just wouldn't be surprised to find you leaned against your apartment door frame smoking a cigar and reading a newspaper...[insert pause]...but you know, with your hair stuffed into your fedora instead of a buzz cut."

Meh.

my main outfit is a pair of shorts (mainly khaki's, but i have a pair of jean shorts, as well as one of those plaid checkered monstrosities everyone calls 'stylish' nowadays), along with a t shirt. in the winter the shorts switch to blue jeans, and I add in a hoodie and a beanie, but i keep wearing t shirts because i like them so much. :)
when it comes to shoes, i usually only wear one pair of these crappy adidas' (they were made of hemp, and have gotten utterly destroyed), but i think they got thrown out, so Im wearing my back-up pair of Vans for the time being. and in the summer i will always wear flip flops or sandals.

fairly simple i suppose. i havent bought anything new in maybe 2 or 3 years now, so im pretty comfortable and consistent in my fashion.

I like dark colors + white (i find contrasts appealing ^^), mostly jeans and shirts but without any brand, text or pictures on them, just solid color. Don't like anything heavy/restrictive on my feet so I mostly wear sneakers which i find comfortable.
When it comes to patterns, one thing i adore are stripes. Don't know why, but I'm really mesmerized by these. And yeah, I only prefer horizontal stripes, vertical look horrible and I'm quite undecided about the diagonal ones.

I'm the opposite in terms of stripes. I much prefer vertical but they may just look better on my um... large frame.

Patters are fun, which is why I like Hawaiian shirts... I like looking down on my shirt and noticing something different... that isn't a food stain.

I've noticed a lot of other females on the forum prefer mens shirts. Is it just me, or are they like 100 times more comfortable? I only have two but they feel nice and loose.
