Forgive my ignorance on chemicals and the human body for a moment while I postulate these questions (after a small intro).

Ever since I can remember, I've had the ability to cause a kind drug-induced haze in my mind at will. I'm not sure exactly what is occurring, but I can feel my balance become loose and my tactile senses dull and my mind sinks into a blissful state of apathy.

I don't do it often, but I did it 2 nights ago after a very stressful evening. It felt great and removed all the stress from my system.

Is this a normal body ability to handle stress or am I just weird? Any clue as to how this is happening to calm me down? Is it hormonal, chemical or simply psychosomatic?

Anyone else do this?

Sounds like you are inducing alpha or theta waves in yourself. We discussed that in a thread maybe a month or so ago, too. There are different techniques that enable one to do this at will from a conscious state; maybe you happened upon the practice of one of these techniques by accident, which would be pretty neat.

I hadn't thought of it relating to brainwaves, but that is possible. After reading a bit about the different states, I could best describe it as a very deep Theta state.

When this occurs it's normally a feeling of "letting go". So perhaps it's just a change in brainwave state instead of releasing a chemical or hormone. The change is very dramatic and occurs within a few seconds of desiring it.

Can you do it when you're already relaxed? In the morning, afternoon, night? With or without ample sleep? How does food impact this ability? How do drugs?

There appear to be no real constraints. I've not experimented with sleep/food/drug variables, so I can't say for sure how they might impact things.

I normally am under a great deal of stress when I do it, that's why I was wondering if it was perhaps a bodily reaction with a chemical or hormone aiding me. I can do it in a relaxed mood, but the feeling is not as strong.

Sounds very interesting...
What does this 'high' feel like exactly? Does it resemble alcohol, cannabis, opiates?

I don't think I have enough knowledge about the subject to really help you find out what's going on, but I'll be following this thread closely, very interesting.

Smoked cannabis once in my life and other than that, just had lots and lots of alcohol. I can say it feels different than alcohol for sure and I never got anything off the marijuana, so no idea how that really feels.

It brings a sense of enormous well being, like my whole body is melting into whatever I'm sitting on and it's the most comfortable, cozy place to be in the entire universe. My eyes drift into the distance and lose focus. If I'm listening to music (especially trance) it becomes like it's own entity enticing me with its warmth. Glowing and pulsating and showing me the way. Where are we going? I don't care, but let's go. I can feel it now.

Maybe research Pineal gland. Brain waves sounds like a plausible explanation as well. Other than that, cant really tell what you are talking about from your description.

For a short while, I could do something similar after getting into the habit of meditating. It was like just launching myself directly into a relaxed, go-with-the-flow state. I'd also do it most often in stressful situations because they provided the most obvious contrasts, like I could do it if I had a clear idea of what I was trying to NOT be... stressed, anxious, rushed, depressed, etc.
Maybe like a purposeful defiance of excitement, emotion, or any outside influences upon them. Does that sound like it at all?

It is a kind of instant relaxation, yes. It comes on very quick, just a matter of seconds, but can last anywhere from several minutes to an hour or so. Like you said, the highest contrast for me is also when I'm stressed.

I think we're talking about the same thing. It's a way of turning everything off, or at least hitting the dimmer switch.
