Mental attraction is subjective - who you are attracted to depends both on yourself and the other person.

Is the same true of physical attraction - is there an optimal body shape for humans?

I have a rather slim build, and I think I am more attracted to thicker women.

In my head.
I suppose there is; people tend to be attracted to something that's familiar to them. Hence, the reason why we still have people that are pure bloods. There can also be physical traits that you simply like for whatever reason, just like you said about yourself.

It is commonly said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; I am fully convinced that this is true, after comparing what a foreign friend of mine found attractive to what I found attractive.

There is also the fact that a person would be most attracted to the person with the most contrasting genes to produce stronger offspring which is the reason there are mutts in the world.

And yes, there is an optimal body shape for humans. For example, males are most typically attracted to women with wide hips becuase they are good for childbirth, even though that is not what they are thinking when they are attracted to this feature. However, obviously not all people are attracted to the "optimal body shape". Like I said before, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yup. Truth is if you want to attract anyone physically you'll need a body like this:

People are attracted to "fitness" in every sense of the word.

Be young (within reason), healthy, physically fit, intelligent, wealthy, have good social standing, a confident and caring temperament, the short and curly of it is that we're all predisposed to look for breeding partners that will produce offspring that are most likely to successfully carry on our genes.

Not that it matters.

Thanks, well written. This post helped me to understand a little bit more, even if it seemed obvious to you.

I wasn't being dismissive of the subject, rather the notion that being attractive matters.

People put too much emphasis on it.

And I was genuinely thanking you - honestly, thanks for helping me understand.

I'm not being sarcastic, though I can see how one could interpret it that way.

I guess I'm just in a good mood, thanks.

What 'matters' is subjective, as I am sure you already know. Some people do value attractiveness.

I thought you thought I was being sarcastic.
If you say you thought I thought you thought something my head will explode.

I did not think you were being sarcastic.

I did think you thought I was being sarcastic.

I thought you knew that I thought you thought I was being sarcastic?

Beauty is an objective phenomenon that our senses have evolved to identify, and our emotions have evolved to be attracted to, for self-preservation. Indeed, what is beautiful is symmetrical and ordered, resisting external & internal pressures which move towards entropy.

We are intuitively repulsed by the ugly for the same reason [self-preservation]. Reason has henceforth uncovered its destructive effects.
