Ron Paul is also the only decent politician I've seen in America in my short lifetime, though I have good vibes about Nader. Alas, those two sentences will lose me credit with more than half of America... sad times.

It's worth visiting if you get a chance. The coding scene is obviously great there, as far as your interests go.

Anyone?

born and raised there - lived there more than 30 years.

South of Houston now.

South Austin is still great.

definitely alot of changes over the past 20-30 years. Back before the '90's, it was cheap to live there and had a real funky vibe that was unique and very natural. Then it became Silicon Valley #2 and alot of money came flowing in. The whole area started growing @ 30-50% a year for like a decade or so, and never really quit. So now you still have the funky element there to an extent, mainly in south and east austin, but all of the yuppies around have this faux-funky thing going on trying to imitate what austin was about, and that is more annoying than anything and somewhat spoils it for me.

Definitely not a cheap place to live anymore. Once you get out of those smaller remnants of old austin, it looks like anywhere else, other than the unbelievable number of mcmansions all through the hills.

Still, much of the natural beauty is still there. Barton springs is still there, and the Barton Creek greenbelt running into town shill has alot to offer, with the bike trails, rock climbing, hiking, and excellent swimming holes when the water is up.

Ah, good quote in the sig from Shalom Aleichem. You know, there's a street named after him just a 10 minute bike ride from my hours. I hear his name on the bus when we stop at the intersection with that street.

I'm not in Austin, but I'll be there for a couple months in the near future. Don't remember what I had in mind specifically, but interesting to see. Cosmic, what do you do with your life? Also, what do you like about Austin?

Ouroboros, man, tell me about the place, haha! Where can I find the soul of Austin?

The soul of a place will be as elusive as one's own when trying to find it, especially if the search is brief, but you can start at Zilker Park, which has Barton Springs, among other things. There is a row of restaurants on Barton Springs Road that should be checked out. Other's will tell you to go to 6th street, which is drunk/frat/party central. I avoid it like the plague. 4th street warehouse district is an alternative to 6th, but it has gone yuppie.

There is a coffee house called Ruta Maya on South Congress that still feels like old austin to me.

Clubs - Continental Club, Saxon Pub.

There are more out east that I am not in-the-know of since I was never part of the underground/art community

Barton creek greenbelt, although if it is dry, it is more difficult to be impressed on first view than if water is flowing.

Check out the Austin Chronicle for events while you are there. It is online also.

Many more notable indications of Austin's soul, but that scratches the surface....

Cosmic, do you ever play 4way chess at Epoch's?

Ourboros, will you be visiting Austin for ACL or in the fall for any reason?

Other INTP responders included: I'll be visiting for a couple months to work and save some money, would love to catch coffee with y'all.

I've been to a few ACLs. I have a friend who lives like across the street from the park it's held in (I always forget the name). Though despite being across the street, it always seems to involve miles of walking to and from. So all in all I've spent a good month in Austin over the last decade.... and I've eaten a lot of Tex-Mex.

I LOVE Ruta Maya! I would go there and take salsa dancing lessons with my mom and brother when we were younger, haha. Haven't been there in forever.

Linsejko, I didn't even know there was such a thing as four-way chess. What I do with my life is probably what I would do in any other American city: Work, go to school, chill. I just happen to have the added luxury of biking through beautiful hill country scenery on my way to work, have many woods and greenbelts to shield my friends and I from trouble as we chill around a bonfire, and can keep cool in the summer in one of the several lakes and creeks (the nearest of which is regrettably dry right now). Also good parties and festivals every now and then. Don't care too much for 6th St. or SoCo myself; I'd rather find myself at Book People or somewhere along Barton Springs (ideally in the actual springs, haha) or Zilker (the respective park, which hosts ACL once a year and tribal fire dancing on Sundays :D).

What I like about Austin is its vibrant, optimistic, youthful energy and its subtle quirk. Above all, I love the awesome people who inhabit this special city. I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be, except maybe Winnipeg (different story altogether).

You mentioned you're coming to save up money. Do you have family here to live with? Just wondering.
