Am I an INTP?

I don't know a ton about the 16 types, but I think I might be an INTP. Instead of taking 1000 internet tests, I decided I'd ask the actual INTP's. After all, who would better judge if I'm on of the iNTP's than their very species? I decided I'll briefly summarize myself.

I'm a quiet kid, majority of the time I'm staring into nowhere, drawing, or I'm on the internet.
I like to think about a lot of things, but at the end of the day unless I was thinking about something I'd say is important, or that stayed in my head a while, I won't be able to recap it. I'm not dramatic at all, I've been often dubbed "chill" as much as I hate admitting it, im kinda indecisive. My opinions on things can take a sharp turn, im normally never grounded on an opinion. I often find myself spitting out words that I haven't even finished processing in my head, I will sometimes freeze up mid
sentence. Not to mention in my head everything seemed so clear. My humor is very..particular. I laugh at eccentric things. I hate over emotional people, but I try not to come off cold. Usually I just sit and stare at the person as they go on about their probably pathetic "problems."

My appearance: I look tired, I have dark under my eyes even when I'm nearly fully awake. I'm a skinny kid, I look like the misfit that I am. I sport a black jacket, neutral shirts and sport shorts everyday. I'm not a fashionista that's for sure. Well, was I specific enough? Am I one of your species? Or nah..

Not INTP, but have spent a large sum of time researching them.

My questions:

How important is understanding, for it's own sake, to you?

How comfortable are you in social settings?

Would you agree that you work to maintain independence? How so?

You sound like you want friends. At least, when I read between the lines, I read that you just want a group of people who like you, empathise with your thoughts and feelings, a pat on the back with a reassuring 'we understand'.

Behavior is bad indication of type of thinking.
Different ways of thinking can produce the same result.
You need to understand yourself your way of thinking, the ways you think inside your brain, not what you do.

Pretty important, self discovery is something I value.
social settings? Depends on who I'm talking to. If the roup of people seems to be a to of over dramatic people it'd be me sliding away back into a corner. And to some extent do try to be independent but I'm a little to good at it I guess. I don't really have any friends.

im suprised you were able to get that out of what I put down, and you would be correct except not so much the "feeling" part. I don't really have a friend. But I'm just a freshman, hopefully I'll make a friend I can really relate to, or be lonely. I'll survive either way.

Are you a competitive person or an active one? That's where I found my differentiation between being an ISTP or INTP. I'm more driven by competition than I am by wanting to do things, hence INTP.

Hello hoo44,

I`m no expert, rather a self-educated, truth seeking road scholar. I`d say, from my unqualified standpoint, that you are showing some of the characteristics of INTPs and you`ve actually described me pretty close to a tee, in describing yourself (I believe that I`m an INTP myself.)

Since you refuse to do the official test, here are some questions that you should ask yourself in order to determine whether you`re indeed an INTP (to the best of my knowledge:)

Do you favor thinking logically to reacting emotionally? Do you work in short lived bursts of enthusiasm, and then give up on things and change direction? Do you dislike routine? Do you live your life according to a deeply held set of morals and principles, with a high regard for libertarian, autonomous individual liberties rather than socialist, Utopian causes? Do you like fairness of treatment?

These are the questions that you should ask yourself and give some thought to, but regardless how much you think about it, thinking about it won`t change who you are one way or another. In my observation of your self-described introduction, you seem to be an introvert. You also seem intuitive and the fact that you`re here and not out clubbing and overdosing on drugs is a good indicator that you`re probably neither a sensing nor a feeling type (experimenting with substances rather than abusing them is a different thing altogether and many INTPs will try almost anything once, though.) Extroversion seems unlikely, but if you`re feeling lonely then that could go either way. I believe that even introverts can also get lonely, and we most certainly enjoy it when we are feel appreciated and needed. Also, if you`re indecisive and open-minded, you`re most likely not a judging type.

Therefore, I would guess you to be an INTP, but what I`ve briefly summed up might be too much of an over-simplification and have some unintentional fallacies, as I am neither a psychologist nor an expert myself (although I`ve read various and sundry books on the subject of INTP and Myers Briggs types.) Honestly, only you can truly know who and what you are, as even the smartest, most educated person in the world can only go on what you tell them. Only you know the inner workings of your mind and that`s why I`d recommend that you do some research rather than rely on any one person`s (or various people`s) opinion from the sidelines. You don`t want to make life changing decisions based on a false premise of being something that you`re not, best to be safe than sorry!

Again, take all that I`ve said with a grain of salt. I don`t have the best grasp on these things, since I`ve only become aware of MBTI personality types a few months ago myself.

Take the official MBTI. There's lots of good information on this site for INTPs, but everyone has their own idea to a certain extent of what is and is not "INTP." Your guidance counselor/school psychologist may provide you with the test. Alternatively, there are free versions online, but be sure it's the official one. You can also just cough up the money and take the official version yourself. There is no quicker or easier way to get closer to the truth. It's going to be very tough for you to make much progress otherwise, unless you work with a type expert.

You sound like you could be an INTP, but your description is far from conclusive. Check out AJ Drenth's website as well. He's an INTP but has written some good stuff on the other personalities and has a pretty decent type clarifier. I can also recommend CelebrityTypes.com. Lastly, if you really want to understand the psychology behind all this, read Jung, Von Franz, and Van Der Hoop.

Always keep in mind that the archetypes that are commonly associated with MBTI types are not those types, simply idealized and generally extremist representations of them. I'd recommend you look into Jungian cognitive functions; they make typing people (including yourself) considerably easier. Another thing to keep in mind is the whole "I'm totally not a feeler" mentality, which isn't as true as you'd expect in a lot of cases. I know of at least three people who thought the same thing, and more or less appear to be thinkers, but aren't, due to cognitive functions. I suppose that assumes you accept the model of cognitive functions, which brings up another decent point. There is no "correct" type for you, or for anyone. The system is far from objective. Well-enough defined so that people can generally agree on someone's type, perhaps, but not objective. It's easy to mistake cynicism/misanthropism/nihilism, etc., as an INTx type, when that isn't actually the case. I think your writing style and described behaviors are indicative of a feeler type, probably an INFJ (there are plenty that think they're INTPs, it's a frequent occurrence), but there isn't much to go on. Instead of arguing for yourself being an INTP, try arguing against being an INFJ. I'd like to see what you come up with.
