Some kid launched a Kickstarter campaign with a target of $10 to make potato salad. In the six days the campaign has been up, the guy has raised over $70k.

There are now some who are condemning this virulent and absurd comedy act by demanding the money be given to charity. These folks note that there are a lot of people on websites similar to Kickstarter who are virtually pan-handling after losing their home/job/family etc.

What say you? What (if anything) is to be done about this wildly popular potato salad campaign?

I think this is an excellent find @Absurdity. Thoroughly entertained by the idea of it.

Well shit, I almost think its worth giving the guy 5 bucks just to be a part of it.

[Edit] I also think it is almost worth it to give 5 buck if I had a say in what kind of potato salad.

Inform the local GMO activists and make it into a genetics/utilitarian demonstration. The fundraiser could become a political figure in due time. He has the popular support already.

Are there any politicians on kickstarter?

In all honesty I see the Potato Salad thing as a form of public interactive performance art. The guy is being honest. He'll make potato salad and send some to everybody who gives him money. I don't see a problem. They are paying for a form of entertainment.

However, anybody else who tries this gimmick will just be a copy cat and is subject to scorn. :D

Nobody forced those people to donate their money...

The real issue with sites like kickstarter or indiegogo imo is crowd-sourcing your startup fees then selling a service/product for profit, which none of the investors have stock in.

What does this say about human nature though? That lulz trump morals?

The sound of the void is not a howl, but a cackle of maniacal laughter.

TBH, it is very difficult for me to conceptualize those whose morals have been broken by this event. Things like this are the spice of life. I believe there are things that are done for the sole amusement of our minds and this is one of them -for me at least. The sheer fallacy of the ideation of this idea is what amuses me and I am not alone seen as how there are over five-thousand people who also are willing to embrace the silliness of this campaign; there must be others.

Given that there are morals to some people that are being broken is testament that things like this are the spice of life. Without offence from what is fallacious the world would surely be a dreary place to live indeed.

Begging isn't illegal though.

If a trivial campaign such as this should require excess funds to go to charity then why not just go ahead and prohibit all forms of hedonistic and impractical spending that every citizen and business does and get on with full support for the homeless and poor with those excess funds?

I imagine that was his hidden-intended point, as we are wont to do around here.

No I think this cuts a lot deeper than mere politics. It's a pretty fascinating case study of human behavior.

Edit: BREAKING UPDATE - Total funds raised have mysteriously dropped to 40k. Developing.

That was @ESC's point as well...

Who cares what form of entertainment this is...Television, imaginary, online, cigarettes, alcohol, porn...aren't those all "interesting case studies of human behavior"

what do they do for the poor?

you can do whatever you want with your money

I thought something you might attempt to be addressing is "should we be able to" and that relating to human behavior

I'm pretty sure there was some stupid youtube video floating around a few years ago, of a kid smashing his iPad because he had two and didn't need another one...wahtevr

*Puts on glasses on TA and then plays CSI:Miami theme*

This is a legal action so I don't mind. I can't see any moral problem here as well.

Zack Brown’s potato salad Kickstarter project, which has so far raised more than $43,000, will lose about 5% of funds raised to Kickstarter for its ‘finder’s fee,’ but Brown could have to hand over a large wad of cash to the IRS since it would be considered income.

The government never has a sense of humor.

Just think how much money we could save (and fraud we could avoid) handing out potato salad instead of food stamps.

I made a kick starter account because of Absurdity's OP. Should I be reviewed in the same light as Potato salad?

It's got a nice beat to it, but I can't eat it for food.

Maybe if you had it printed on potatos that we could then mash and hand out to the homeless?

As long as the money was given with the giver's consent, I don't care and don't see a problem.

It's a brilliant way to make money.
