I couldn't find a thread in the search and am a little surprised now (so if there is one, nevermind this thread). But how do you all view this dichotomy? I'm wondering if there is even any kind of relative consensus.

From what I understand, it's just the difference between weather your first "extroverted"function is S/N = perceiving, or
T/F = judging.

Judging and perceiving oppose each other in the sense that one can't do both at the same time. If one wishes to observe one's environment, be it internal or external to the self, one begins by, ahem, observing. One observes presumably by taking at least a small survey. Perceiving would be doing this and if one perceives, continuing to do this, either via expanding or by reviewing. Judging means focusing by picking out and emphasizing what is available in the perception view. Perceiving continues; judging calls a halt and narrows.

The way I see it we do both all the time. We look; we choose. Temperament is different. One may have the temperature to prefer one over the other. Motive is another factor. Anyone regardless of temperament may decide to choose or postpone choice.

I'm reminded of shopping for a camera or a car or even a friend or a lover. One may look and look and look making all kinds of comparisons, hoping something will jell and be satisfying or even giving up the task as hopeless. Another may be delighted by what is first seen, fall in love with it/them and refuse to look at more choices.

This is the worst. But at least we eventually end up with the best choice, provided we haven't missed our opportunity.

But yeah, I pretty much agree with BAP.
