A thread recently on the difficulties of living with Ne prompts a post on various tips and tricks I use to keep focused, some of this has probably been previously published. For background I'm not as hyper-focused as it might seem from these postings. I go through fallow periods, and still have not infrequent times where I have to keep my nose in the dog-pile. So just take it that some degree of distraction is an endemic feature of being an INTP.

So, some things I've picked up over the years ...

  • Green or White Tea. Not coffee! I discovered the beverage from traveling in Japan, having removed all caffeine from my diet. Tea (green or white ideally) is the ideal drink for a Ne desiring focus, because yes it really does wake up you up and calm you down. A bit of caffeine (less than coffee usually, unless you try an exotic Gyokuro or the like) gives you focus, and L-theanine encourages Alpha-waves and mild focus. Plus it has numerous health benefits, what's not to like?
  • Mild memory and focus supplementation I take "RayAndTerry" Memory support (Ray Kurzweil vitamin hocking company), which contains Ginko Bilboa. It really does improve focus and memory, and has other health benefits.
  • Take physical care of yourself It goes without saying, no drugs, eat as healthy a diet as you can (e.g. vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, mushrooms and onions)
  • Take emotional care of yourself Keep stress and distractions manageable.
  • Mild multitasking Ne is the natural multitasker, Si is on the opposite side of the spectrum. I listen to classical music while I work, nearly all day. It's a great way to listen to the entire Canon, but it also seems to feed Ne's need for differentiation and excitement. I can't listen to anything with English words though, like books on tape or English vocal. That cuts into the programming or writing I'm doing. So if you have a focused task, try music (classical recommended), or perhaps background visuals, working in a crowded area/coffee shop, or the like.
  • Get a boss. Seriously, I know we hate them, but it's a necessary relationship. Really have something you're accountable for, something you have to produce, on a daily basis. It trains that focus trait which doesn't always come easily.
  • Give Ne its due I reserve the evening as a time for Ne. I surf, think, speculate and the like. Ne, being expansive will want to do a power grab and have more, but it seems that letting it have free run during a part of the day will help mitigate it.
  • Practice Get in habits around these ideas, over time they'll come more naturally.
  • Give Ne its time in everything you do OK I've got some programming task that just needs to be done. Is there anything about it I can research? This one works great, if I get bored, I just take the task I'm doing and open up a side Wikipedia window on some feature from it. Could be anything, in my example if I'm just making a GUI, I'll do a little research on MVC, or Lambda functions or the Lambda Calculus. Don't let yourself get too derailed, but putting a larger context around a focused task really helps.

I can vouch for mild background-stimulus thing. Working in coffee shops generates amazing focus for me. Totally silent places, like libraries, is completely impossible.

Good points Architect.

If that doesn't work, try this:

- Drink coffee, red wine, and beer. Coffee in the morning to knock out the hangover, beer in the afternoon to beat the hard day, red wine at night to push away any depressing thoughts of suicide or loneliness.

- Eat psilocybin mushrooms twice weekly to regulate neurotransmitters and feel the benefits of enhanced self confidence and self-awareness.

- Masturbate regularly, use hardcore pornography. Soon you will get laid. Probability is real and doesn't discriminate the way bitches do.

- Start a new project every day but don't bother finishing them. Not like it really matters, now does it?

- Ignore people who act like they are in charge. Be the boss of yourself.

If you need more life lessons, remember I'm super successful at everything and I am a supreme MBTI prototype. Try to be exactly like me in every way. Also, my sperm are all INTP, every one of them.

Seems miss spelt beat me to the trolling,

Kidding of course, but I do feel the need to nitpick

architect said:
Google define drugs = "a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body."

Now obviously you meant the connotation and not the denotation (denotationally there is small difference in "medicine/drugs/...chemicals(lol)" and are usually buzzwords anyway.

L-theanine capsules with strong coffee is like Adderall, only not as fucked up. Take it without food for most impressive effect.

Predictably so

Yes, obviously there is a spectrum. Food, or at least food with sugar could be considered a drug. Also predictably the conversation degenerates into suggestions of favorite mild drugs. I debated even putting that in there.

Good Thread Architech. I think the fórum is a excelente tool to help ourselves to be more productive, more active, live better and produce more.

I think there is no better way to calm down Ne than Sports.

What is Ne?

Is opinions, theories, divergence. Ne is our mind theorizing, travelling, going back and forth and discovering new things trough trial and error.

Doing a sport forces you to live in the here and now. Because is risky, is dangerous. All your focus must go to the moment, and Ne takes the back seat. Or at lest he turns down the volume.

I will try green tea.

Also, what musics do you reccomend to play in the background? I like pieces like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iadyrns4rgg

Musics like this really calm down my Ne.

I don't know how to get them.

That must be frustrating, then.

Have you looked into producing your own supply?

Psilocybin mushrooms are ... doable, I won't say "easy" because they're not. You need to follow a scientific procedure systematically, to the letter, without deviation. I can PM you the resource. Cost is minimal, and in my honest opinion these are the best psychedelic to dip your feet into because they have been extensively studied and users generally report enchanted, often permanent increases in openness, confidence, and self-awareness. If you have a strong mind, then "bad trips" are nothing to fear. Bad trips are for weak minded close minded suggestible twits.

LSD would be trickier. I guess you would need to attend venues and shows associated with subcultures and earn the trust of other INTPs there. In my experience, INTPs are the ones most likely to have LSD for sale. Don't ask me why. however, if you can get a certain type of seed (which eludes me at the moment) then you can synthesize LSD in a laboratory setting.

I know of another member here who you may want to talk to about DMT. I can put you in touch with him if you like, I'll get his permission first.

Not sure why you don't just suggest that people take L-theanine? That way you get a consistent dose. Otherwise I don't see any issues with this.

Nootropics have come a long way. I'm excited to see what will comes out of it soon.

I don't know how to get them.

PM me. I may have suggestions

Drugs are totally out of the picture, mainly because the people who deal them seems to be...not quite there..not quite sure how to put it( trying to avoid being derogatory).

I dislike warm liquids. So tea is out of the picture as well.

A Boss? Like on this site?

Overall, I'm not sure why I should channel my focus. Of course. I'd make a shitload of more money. And children. And real estate, and fame. And so on.

But. Would it make me more happy?

Excellent advice! Though it's kinda irritating how calibrated you are.

I aim to please.

Tea is about more than just L-theanine, it has significant other benefits, including the ritual. I only use supplementation for things I cannot get from a primary source, or for when I need in larger quantities.

But. Would it make me more happy?

Happiness isn't the goal, optimal existence is.

What about red wine? Blueberries"

And generally more "pure"products. Like fatty milk instead of "artificially" created "healthy" substances?

I read some research awhile back that omega3 improved focus on adhdchildren. Like eating fish. Is this relevant towards the INTP personality?

What about it? Not sure what you're asking about. Alcohol is a known poison, the latest research is now conclusive. If you want Resveratrol then take a supplement. I have a genetic defect in my methylation cycle so supplement for that (methylfolate) which Resveratrol is a contraindication for, so don't take any.

Fatty milk is one of the best carcinogen producing things you can eat. I don't touch the analog products either, which are usually TVP derivatives.

Mercury from mining is in the world water system and nearly all the fish, plus there are other issues. I take Omega3 supplementation produced in a lab (microbial) under stringent conditions.

Is this relevant towards the INTP personality?

Don't know.

As far as I know blueberries, the not bush type have benefits, not even known to researchers. They know it is amazing, but not all why.

Red wine - poison? hmm....my grandmother became an alcoholic at 80, on red wine. and still going strong at the nursery at 95. I know it's not a sample with one person. But who knows, what we do know is that she drank a whole lot of red wine.

Alcohol labeled as a poison is a controversial claim. Allegedly everything we put in our body is a poison, and breaks it down a bit at each bite, compared to what it would have done with optimal food. So not sure that is a solid argument against not digesting alcohol. As it is most everything that enter our body seems to be a poison.

This is interesting. But I am not aware that mercury or other contaminants is a problem in the fish where I live. Although, I need to check this out further.

Fluoride. Not sure what sources of water people are generally using but I would go out on a limb and suggest the presumably more massive than otherwise levels of fluoride (and other fluoride containing compounds) is, probably, not desirable. Generally,

http://fluoridealert.org/issues/sources/tea/

There is a difference though. Most commercial filters just remove other contaminants like metals. They don't touch the fluoride (or, fluorosilicic acid, the weird waste product 'they' put in the water because it is cheaper than fluoride). You need a special specific fluoride filter for it. And, quite frankly, these are mostly used for poor communities in which they probably need all the help they can get. Such as, in India where the water is generally dirty.

Obviously, small amounts of fluoride is presented to the water with the idea that it helps teeth (although: http://www.newsweek.com/fluoridation-may-not-prevent-cavities-huge-study-shows-348251).
There is already some fluoride in the water though. And in the air, and in rice, and in tea leaves; etc. The fluoride is dusty, and it is attracted to hard, silicate like material. Hence, there are rocks in bodies of water, and there is fluoride in the rocks. And some of that fluoride leaks into the water. Somewhere along the line someone thought it would be a good idea to put more fluoride in the water (and at that, just industrial waste products that happen to have some fluoride in them). So it is a bit of a conspiracy.

In a way, I would like to know more about this. There are some people doing work, analyzing various contaminant levels of various waters, which vary from place to place. So I suppose if it is managed then you would not really be ingesting that much more fluoride than you normally would be, by proxy.

Plus, fluoride doesn't really do that much. There is some speculation but most people aren't really interested in that. If it is attracted to and binds to bony material then one would suppose too much of it (toxicity) leads to the familiar adverse effects. The main concern seems to be damage to the pineal gland, of course, which would supposedly work less efficiently. So, as far as stuff like this goes: http://fluoridealert.org/issues/sources/tea/

I am not exactly sure what to make of it. It's probably just bullshit and someone probably just made it all up.
In the elemental gas form the four halogens are known to be highly toxic in the first place (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine). Rumor has it it began with the Nazi's developing chemical warfare. USA took the remaining scientists into custody and had them do some work. Fun stuff.
But of course slight changes to structure can alter effects. Just because fluorine is highly toxic doesn't mean fluoride will have the same effect. But still.

Well, whatever. Could you provide a brief reason why mushrooms are there. Mushrooms are mostly water and carbs, so I don't particularly see why they are a staple. Most likely they are the mass produced regular button mushrooms, some random Agaricus species.

I think most mycologists, or some of them, don't even really eat the mushrooms. No one really knows that much about what most of them contain and even the edible ones are suspected to contain amounts of certain carcinogens; at the very least this can be sort of remedied by cooking, but not everything is destroyed or minimized by heat. Probably obvious but you don't want to eat them raw unless you're trying to eat one that can get you high and the process of drying has been known to significantly decrease the potency of that species. Mushrooms aren't vegetables, they're just weird things that pop out the ground.

Describing the mental state and feelings one experience with these "Ne distractions" would be helpful to determine a proper remedy.

I find that for me, I just have to counter the restlessness or impulse to do something else. If I don't get enough stimuli from something to keep myself immersed, I add layers of complexity. If I'm listening to someone talk and find my attention wander and a want to do something else, I focus on more things about the talk and person who talks to keep those parts of my brain preoccupied.

I'm listening to some lectures on khanacademy these days, and tend to feel an urge to refresh intpf or research some tangential thought etc. So what I do to counter:

-> Mentally prepare myself that I'm going to watch this lecture and do nothing else while. Even if I feel like thinking or doing other things, I don't.

-> If I find myself wondering about something, I make a note of the question or topic to research later, either in between lectures or after a designated time. Though, preferably I make these breaks at least 30 minutes apart. Too much browser hopping or such makes me unfocused and lets the mind wander. it also enables that pattern and makes it more difficult to retain.

-> Sometimes make notes

-> If I find the topic too simple or I'm getting restless, I find additional things to focus on. It can be the tone of voice of the speaker, how he structures his sentences, how he thinks, what I think about what he thinks etc. This keeps my mind active on an additional errr "level" which means there more to process and less room to think about how much I want to do something else.

-> When I want to continue the lectures, I sometimes think about the positive feel I get from having done it in the past. I mean, I felt like accomplished something and was able to commit when I watched x lectures yesterday, so I try to remember how the that feels like to motivate me to go into it again.

I do take DMAE and l-acetyl-carnitine. I haven't taken them separately, so I don't know which of them helps my brain fog. And I'm too lazy to experiment. I also drink white tea.

Other things:

-> being aware of what time of the day your brain is more sharp and present. It's easier to concentrate then.

-> Set goals.

-> Don't think about whether you want to or don't want to do something. Just decide that you are going to do it. Don't let the feels meddle.

-> When you become more acquainted with the mental state that keeps you focused, you can somewhat be able to summon it again. At least enough to throw you back into focus when you are starting to drift out.

My Omega 3 is in the form of a refrigerated eyedropper vial (which is neither here nor there), but anyhow I also take ground flax in the morning. Flax seed is converted to by the small intestine (I believe) into Omega 3. However different individuals have varying capacity for this (some not at all), and it varies by age too generally - as you age you convert less efficiently for the most part. So I approach the issue from several sides in my biohacking routine.

- Limit external stimulation
Crowds, television, media, internet are all things that rob us of our focus. All of this will result in internal processing hence lack of focus on whatever it is we need to focus on. You can't be a hermit though and we all do these things, but do so in moderation and you'll find greater clarity and focus again in the things we truly need and want to focus on. Best times to think and focus are in morning, after exercise, or meditation ( focus on nothing). Moderation is king.

- Primal diet
Our Western American diet sucks and gives our minds severe ADD. Looking around the majority of people are way out of shape which also affects ability to focus mind at will. Stick to what our hunter gatherer ancestors ate and survived off of for so many thousands of years ( they didn't die of heart disease and cancer, rather infection or animal.). yes you can still have occasional pizza or junk food, but in moderation. Your mind will thank you with focus and clarity.

- Exercise and be active
Breathing and sweating are essential to removing toxins that effect our ability to focus from the body. Recommend HIIT Exercise and strength conditioning to keep it real.

- Discipline, be strict about the things you focus on and why you are focusing on them, what's your goal of motive? Find your purpose in attaining the knowledge of things otherwise the attainment of knowledge will rule you by stealing your focus.

Although these are not quick fix enhancers, they are life changing mind/body health strategies. I follow this blueprint/strategy and I'm able to have laser beam focus at will.
I used to go where my thoughts carried me, but now it's the opposite. Personal growth and awareness is my focus among a few other projects. If you can not control yourself then i guarantee someone or something else is contolling you and your focus.

The sky is the limit the universe is my playground.

Alcohol in moderate doses, a few drinks a week, has been shown (suggested) to increase lifespan by a few years as well as protect against specific ailments, particularly coronary heart disease. The non drinkers tended to die earlier than moderate drinkers but the heavy drinkers had the same death rate as the non drinkers, in essence. Tobacco appeared to cancel any beneficial affects. Obviously those studies have been criticized for a variety of reasons
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2194048
http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/arh25-4/255-261.htm

Still, consumers of alcohol do experience a range of adverse ailments - blackouts, memory impairment, cancer. I think cancer is the leading cause of death for them. Drinkers still have a greater chance of developing cancer than the general population though.
I don't drink myself.

Alcohol tends to make me less luminous and lucid...unless I am with the right people. I would really like to try some psychedelics, though.

Depends on which ones. As far as "drugs" go it might be better to say don't smoke too much, rather than don't do them. Some dope is so good you shouldn't even try it once, however. Obviously you should stay away from meth, crack, and pcp; etc. *

The thing to know is people believe drugs (or psychedelics) allow one to gain a glimpse of a further spectrum of consciousness. This conflicts with certain teachings mystics preach, in which these substances merely distract one from consciousness, or reality. So once you have a taste it will probably never be the same... For better or worse?
On the other hand substances are implicated with increasing empathy and overall human bonding. They are all banned because they have no purported medical value

Being practical, it is hard to say whether some of these can help or not. Taking it too serious you may wander down the rabbit hole. Take PKD for example. Correct me if I’m wrong but a lot of his work seems to be anti-drug, considering he was a former drug abuser (mainly stimulants, it seems, plus a little experimentation with psychedelics). He would say that drugs fry the brain rather than allow access to hidden or distorted realities.

So go ahead and ask if all “drugs” fall under that same category. Maybe. The “correct” way to take a psychedelic is to meditate on it and figure out what may be wrong in your life. Some people manage to just have fun with them though, in a cool, hip manner. In a way this type of behavior makes the scene look immature similar to how recent medical marijuana facilities prefer to say ‘get medicated’ rather than ‘get stoned’.

So while they fall under the category of “psychotomimetic”, or psychedelic, many of these substances were tried and evaluated to see if they can offer anything other than interesting visual distortions. That is why they have been implicated in providing therapy, and there are indeed many recorded cases of people healing or becoming arguably improved individuals after a few LSD sessions in a professional environment with a therapist. It should be noted that while some have similar structure they probably don’t inherently possess “therapeutic” qualities… Most of them act on serotonin receptors.

Acid was first discovered in Switzerland, so the story goes (1938). The same guy later went on to isolate the active ingredient in the mushrooms. He was, apparently, fairly intelligent, died at 102, and was a proponent of acid, having used it on a few occasions. Maybe the drugs made him stupid somehow? Look up some of his quotes for more info.

Regardless, the CIA found out about it and began distributing it on the streets, via agents disguised as hippies and normal civilians. They were interested in mind controlling substances. Before, they were using pot as a truth serum (and referred to it as ‘sugar’) and to interrogate people. They needed something stronger and acid seemed to fir the bill. Even after experimenting with it for a number of years they still went on to use even stronger, non-psychedelic substances. Surprisingly, many people of the era became proponents of it and claimed it was the answer to humanity’s salvation - although it was sort of odd that the CIA initially used it for apparently aversive purposes.

Acid is still fairly popular but currently I’m under the opinion to stay away from it. At least do mushrooms, but not too many so as to get fried.

Marijuana is merely a mild psychedelic and is atypical since the active ingredients aren’t even alkaloids. It is more of an enhancer. You can smoke it to enhance your acid trips or to kick your mushroom trip up a notch, maybe even to boost your nutmeg intensification quicker and of course to intensify your alcohol or beer. Smoking it straight provides trips of its own but the novelty can quickly wear off as tolerance develops. It induces transient psychoses. It provides synesthesia for a short time but after that it just gives you a few ideas to possibly toy with later. It is easy to abuse… But of course it is more looked at as a medicine, providing pain relief to many people who have no other substance to turn to.

Keep in mind that in a totally different ideology the aboriginal peoples used and smoked these substances for ceremonious and religious purposes. Of course in modern societies these are quickly rendered bogus. However, back then, the indigenous peoples were basically using these tryptamines for therapeutic reasons. It even became a tourist attraction for westerners. The intense visions received aren’t so much important as any insights or feelings glimpsed, apparently. They don’t care so much about the visions, as long as your drug addiction can be cured via the tryptamine tea.

If you were to dabble with these it would be smarter to start mild then move up. Say, try some pot, get the basic idea, then move on to something more interesting. Of course, I refer to DMT. Maybe smoke salvia initially too but in my experience salvia has the peculiar quality of making you want to quit smoking.

There is literally nothing like DMT. Well, perhaps besides psilocybin mushrooms which have active ingredients similar to it but that is beside the point. As previously mentioned in the old world it was used in therapy but today it is used to go to hyperspace. Right now no one really knows what hyperspace is for, or what exactly resides there. The closest thing to it is dreaming & lucid dreaming. But even that has a tendency to pale in comparison since they can be difficult to recall (once metabolized hyperspace can be difficult to recall as well). To make matters worse when you smoke DMT it constricts your body making it hard to move, essentially forcing you to lay down in sleeping position, as if you actually were dreaming. However, it may be too intense for some people so you must start with something mild, such as pot first. Pot, really, is nothing. It is negligible. And DMT is illegal even though it is produced in the human and animal body.

Perhaps the general sober human brain is the way it is for a reason. Should it not be tampered with. Drink some caffeine and get a little boost. The idea is occasional alteration could yield valuable insight. Of course, you can just have deep conversation with someone and perhaps get the same general thing. We’ve been over this a thousand times. Perhaps not everyone need to smoke it. Not considering bad/paranoid trips we have all heard the joke that the world would be more peaceful if everyone were stoned. Just don’t get fried. Still go to work the next day. The war on drugs is a sham designed to slowly peel rights away. 9/11 2001. I’m done. This probably would have been better if I typed it out when I first had the idea. All these things do is heighten your appreciation of life. Oddly enough. Perhaps check this book out for starters:

Helpful thread! Thanks! I'm going to try this. I always have hard time focusing on my studies. And now I wouldn't be able to graduate next semester :ahh:
