I'd like them to make the Hobbit a movie. I liked the movies, though I would have enjoyed Tom Bombadill.

I am a LOTR fan too. I have so many characters that I like. My favourite (of course) Gandalf, Legalos, Gimli, Aragorn etc That's the good side and on the bad side I love the Balrog , the Uruk Hai and Golum.

I don't like the characters as much as I like the way all the characters intertwine to create the metaphor the trilogy illustrates. For example, the conflict between Frodo and Gollum over the ring.

And of course Gandalf is undeniably cool.

The only 'bad guy' I like is Saruman, he's the only one that seems alive I think.

I read all four books and watched the movies. In the books, my favorite character was Sam. In the movies, Aragorn. Return of the King (the movie) blew my mind. Also, Aragorn is ridiculously sexy.

One of my all time favourite books definitely.
For the first time I read it when I was 11 and I was totally fascinated of course. Since then I've read all the parts yet 5 or 6 times again. It is and probably will always be something very special for me.
The movies were impressive and I enjoyed them too, but they can't replace the book.
I have specially always loved the elves because they represent such wisdom, strength, dignity and purity that in this world is rare to be found u_u

Viggo Mortensen seems sexy until you watch A History of Violence. It ruined him for me. Mainly because of the extremely aggressive sex scene on the wooden stairs. Eek.

Now I can't watch LOTR because in the back of my mind, I know that it's just an act and after Arwen and him are married for awhile his hidden past as the rogue strider will surface. And then it'll be 'eek' on some stone stairs in Gondor.

I have always liked Aragorn in the book - he was actually my most favourite character, but wasn't so impressed in the movies. Not sure why. He did look and act good. But it was so weird to see what , for all the time before the movie existed, used to be just a very vague foggy imagination in my head - being presented as a real person with a real concrete appearance. I think that no matter what the actor would look like, it would still be a disappointment for me.

Well, similarly (just not so dramatically) i think that watching a film of a book always hurts the book, unless the film and the actors and actresses are really good. This is because when you will read or think about the book afterwards you won't be able to suppress the movie and the characters in the book will never be as they were before in your imagination.

Needless to say that i love LotR too. Although i doesn't go as far as my brothers dedication. He read a lot more than me (Silmarillion and such) and he actually 'studied' a book about Tolkiens elven languages (this book was a birthday presents from me to him).
But for me LotR is the basic and first definition of the fantasy genre.

for that reason, my dad to this day still refuses to watch the movies.

they were definitely great books (and movies) but i think people give them more credit then they deserve. the books can be a little too "fluffy" (too many adjectives, not enough verbs) for me at times (especially when it took about 3 pages for Gandalf to agree to not bring his staff into the kings room). they are certainly fantastic stories, but sometimes i just want to get on with the actual story and not have to muddle through all the fluff.

I still prefer the LOTR books to the movie, there is always something that ruins it in a movie. Having said that, I enjoyed the movie's portrayal of the Ents though.

The Ent behavior was stupid. Tolkien got than one wrong. For someone who knows about Animism in Nature through experience.

Tolkien was right about the pre-Romans in England speaking Latin in the towns though (my opinion: the linguists have now been proved wrong on their native extermination theory by the Saxons)

How was which Ent-behaviour wrong? (Honest question, read it some time ago)

But however the above question is answered, how could he "got that one wrong"?? They are his invention and he is the author. they behave as he wishes...?

Not sure. In the conventional scale they are probably Wolfman (ENTJ) that have incorporated (Borg style) others like Snakes (ENTP) &/or Spiders (ESFP var) into their soul. The Axe Murderer might be similar to the Medusa (Gorgon) that Perseus killed. Lesser Balrogs were probably ESFJ variants.

Not quite sure if Tolkein understood all the mythology properly ?

Dragons got a poor deal in some of Tolkein's stuff.

God, I found those movies so bloody long. I'm not saying that the Lotr series wasn't good, they just went on too long. I almost fell asleep at the end of The Return of the King.

I really enjoy the movies. Not only were they good in their own right, but they introduced me to the books. Its quite fun to read the origional books. They help shed light on the movies as well as add countless other things that the movie did not have tme to adress due to the aformentioned length of the films.

i do enjoy the lotr, though i don't know if i would say i am a fan. i don't really do the whole fan thing. if tolkein was still alive and i met him, i would probably just be like "oh, hey, how's it going". i don't really get excited about things like that, which isn't necessarily a good thing because maybe it makes my life more boring.

however, i do once again enjoy the books. i probably read the entire series at least four times, and silmarillion twice.
