Default Should I start smoking cigarettes

I kind of like the idea of smoking but never really smoked one before. Weed can get too heavy and is sedating so I can't always use, and don't prefer to in that manner. However I think cigarettes would work in antithetical to it. Besides some possible health effects it may be a good hobby to pick up on.
How many cigarette smokers do we have here?

If you become addicted, it's hard to stop unless you strongly will it or simply run out of funds.

That being said, I recommend smoking a pipe over cigarettes. In this country at least pipe tobacco is far cheaper than cigarettes(Average of about R27 for a packet of cigs, whereas R22 of cheap pipe tobacco can last you a month, or a week if you smoke more than once daily)

For me, pipe tobacco tastes far better, and if you don't like raw tobacco you can buy various exquisite flavors (cherry, vanilla etc.)

In comparison, cigarettes are very bland and acrid to me.

A pipe is also economical, as the ash can be smoked again, sometimes up to two times. While re-used tobacco tastes fouler, you can get double the tobacco out of it if you collect all the ash(not truly ash yet though, large chunks still burnable depending on type of tobacco).

You may need to buy pipe cleaners and a stamper, though twigs and fingers can serve as a stamper while q-tips can serve as pipe cleaners, but I do recommend pipe cleaners over the latter.

After some weeks of smoking the walls of your pipe will have compacted tobacco burned into them, scrape it out with a knife or even the handle of a teaspoon until you bare the original dimensions of the wall once more.

If your addiction is desperate enough, even these scrapings can be smoked, though not comfortably.

I prefer to light with matches, but there are special pipe lighters and even a normal lighter will work, however it will burn the circumference of the pipe, and the walls if the pipe is not fully packed.

Cigarettes are a waste of money. As a former nicotine addict I say it was also a waste of time. Tobacco should be used occasionally if at all. A cigarette can be very relaxing when you are stressed or after a few beers. But after you get addicted cigarettes stop actually doing what they did before. They become the source of your stress and anxiety, no longer the savior from it.

I like smoking a pipe now and then. It's nice to mix tobacco with some catnip and mugwart, even a little clove or some wild dagga. I can also enjoy a cigar once or twice a year with one of my old friends when he's in town.

Make some kava kava chewing gum or lemon balm chew. Or do what you want. I smoked for 4 years and I started around 23 or so. I was able to quit and still enjoy tobacco on occasion. Although, I now think cigarette smokers smell like shit.

It's difficult to stop if you start. Like really difficult. The ups and downs and lung butter are not worth it. If it ever was helping me anything I can assure you it isn't now, and it took me a long time to conclude that this is the case (for me).

I'd let it go but for attention span and a weak conviction to actually affect the changes required to do so. And also a raging nicotine addiction.

It's expensive, all your stuff will smell if you smoke indoors (because fuck smoking outdoors), and the eventual buildup of nasty smoke particles on every surface of everything is very difficult to clean. Polonium-210. Nicotine stains on your fingers. Big ass slug sized wads of lung butter you inevitably start coughing out. It's bad for your skin and all the really old hardcore smokers I know look a lot harder than people who haven't smoked all their lives - eventually so will I probably. COPD, cancer. I know people afflicted with or dead from complications from either.

Can't say it has been all bad... "smoke breaks" are a nice way to get some "me time", and I smoke a lot when I am braining stuff (probably just conditioning by now) because it's somehow comforting or something. None of the cost / benefit analysis of any of the "not all bad" stuff makes any sense though. Really not worth it.

I liked Dunhill. They changed though.

I highly recommend against taking up smoking. If you can get in and get out without addiction then sure... have a brief flirtation with it and then drop it.

It's intimacy with crazy, 'beak, and they say you shouldn't ever put it in crazy. Not ever.

I have been smoking since 2009.

Damn that's like 7 years lol

I don't think it's addictive per say.

I had my first at a party in high school when I was drunk out of my mind in the middle of a soccer field.

Then didn't smoke again until 3 years ago at a few parties time to time. Then for about 3 days I smoked a whole pack that was a dark and stressful exam week.

Nothing in between.

Then again I smoked a few over another stressful situation that blew me up.

Nothing in between.

I recently had a cigarette and I am starting to grab my friends vape to try it a bit kinda often again.

Most likely again, nothing in between this and future incidences.

But everyone is different.

My friends have been hooked to cigarettes but I just can't.

I am however a masturbation addict. If I don't abstain I would masturbate everyday to the point where I can't get shit done and my body is lifeless. Porn or no porn I can just get off and often come back to masturbation just because I am curious on what are the pornstars up to.

So I do NoFap pretty often and go into massive relapses.

TLDR;
Not everyone get's addicted to cigarettes on the first puff or for some, ever. But we never know for sure. Even if you have an addictive personality. But if you are the anxious kind you should probably not smoke as it's a stupid way to calm yourself down. Just rage instead.

I had my first cigarette when I was like 12. didn't smoke again till much later. Didn't smoke again until much later. Started being a full blown addict in 2006. I can honestly say it was probably the worst mistake of my life to pick up the habit. Cigs are not like recreational drug use where you just do it once in a while. Its something that consumes your life and dictates what you do. Don't start. Every reason to start is meat with 10 reasons not to. Just don't. And it is fucking hard to quit, like really fucking hard to quit once you are hooked. That should be reason alone not to start.

I disagree there. I found it incredibly easy to stop.

As far as picking it up as a habit, pizzabeak, I would say that as an occasional habit they're worth it, but anything more than that gets expensive and gross. The head rush from cigarettes is really fun and energizing, but too many cigarettes in too short a time is genuinely sickening.

I don't smoke weed on my own because it gives me paranoia, but I've been smoking cigarettes since I turned 18.

Used to have a very low tolerance for them but now I can smoke like 10 at a party and my throat feels fine the next day. lol

Your first cigarette is definitely not going to be that pleasant unless you're drunk.

I smoke Newports and used to smoke Reds. I don't even get a head rush anymore if I stop for a few days. Idk

I find it's more of a social pressure thing to smoke at parties if it's present.

But, you should smoke a cigarette if you decide you want to — not because you feel pressured into it.

Strange. I PREFER to smoke weed on my own because it gives me paranoia.

I smoke tobacco moderately. I enjoy it. I smoke tobacco through a bong a lot.

through bong = head spins, feeling of "woah!"

as a cigarette = a few minutes of relaxation/slight disassociation, time to think

What others have said. I like the clear headedness, dizziness, and relaxation I get from tobacco if I smoke it on rare occasions. If I do it regularly, these effects are nulled and you've just got a costly, controlling, unhealthy habit.

I prefer cigars as I can only justify getting them on special occasions and you have more time to savour and enjoy it. They taste better than cigarettes imo as well. I sometimes smoke herbal concoctions, like mugwort, mullein, damiana, catnip etc, but its not quite the same.

I don't get paranoia from cannabis, I just become deeply introverted to the extent I'm unable to use it and remain social. It's great for relaxing and exploring the body, listening to music, contemplating and enjoying the subtle changes in thought patterns. I've never used it regularly though, just whenever I especially need a break.

yeah I pretty much agree with all of this post actually.

the one thing though is that I find it difficult to convince myself to want to stop strongly enough to actually stop.

I tried recently, and I was handling the cravings well, however... I picked it up after a few days since I was struggling to see it as important enough to bother about, at the time anyway.

I can see plenty of reasons to quit, however in the moment they seem to not add up to enough to counter the desire in the moment to get that head rush. Given that I do smoke quite moderately (2-3g of tobacco a day, which is probably still messing up my breathing a fair bit, but it could be a lot worse) it's just... it seems acceptable to continue with it, and I've been a smoker for a lot longer than I thought I would, but yeah it... seems ok to me. o.O [I would probably advise not starting it if you haven't, since, well... it's not that good really, it's quite mild as far as stimulants go, and almost certainly a greater pay off* than the reward, it can be hard to convince yourself of that once you develop a habit, though...]

* I think I used the complete opposite term to what I meant here, cos I think pay off and reward mean the same thing, so I actually meant to say "a greater cost"

--

And like, if I'm drinking, which I am right now, I think it makes the drinking more enjoyable, and the tobacco smoking is more enjoyable when drunk, however had I not started smoking, I would most likely have no desire to add that to the drinking experience, it's just that once started it becomes an almost expected way to enhace the experience.

--

And this bit is off-topic, but universally on topic since this is a typology based forum, but I'll give a run down of my post in terms of the INFP function order

Fi: I read what you said, I relate to it, I agree

Ne: thinking of things I can add that weren't already mentioned, that was the main one

Si: here is my experience related to the topic

Te: here is some of my thoughts on the matter

usually I stop at 4 functions, but there's some after thoughts, so

Fe: this is what I would advise to others

Ni: interpreting what I said based on how others may see it?

Se: this is what I'm doing right now

Ti: some brief logic based on the situation that I'm in and how it relates back?

(or was this part the Ti?)

Genuinely interested in a cognitive functions interpretation of what I write...

edit: I think there was definitely some mix up with how I related the parts of my post to the functions, like maybe the part I called Te was Ne, or something like that.

... etc...

You're... seriously considering that? What are you hoping to achieve? If it's the act of smoking, hookah? If it's the effect, pick something safer that also activates nAChRs? Lobeline?

"possible health effects" "good hobby"

Yeah I first picked it up as a habit because all of my coworkers were pretty heavy smokers so it just turned out that we'd all go have a cigarette out in front of the store every now and then. That part was actually great. I've always liked the social element of most any kind of smoking. It's very relaxing/enjoyable to have a cigarette while shooting the shit with a couple of friends.

Adderall is also great. It's physically taxing/exhausting if you do it too often (three days in a row has proven to be too much for me), but if you can find a dosage/frequency that works for you it's a godsend.

I wonder what benefits you feel you'd get from this Pizzabeak... Is it to slowly shift away from cannabis use?

And by good hobby, do you mean a type of placeholder activity to pass the time? o.0 If so, I could think of dozens of better ways to pass the time which don't cut your lifespan.

And if you have anxiety you need to alleviate, there are better ways too.

Smoking is the worst. It's hard to give it up. Apparently I still reeked of smoke months after I quit. I realised I had to stop when my feet would lose feeling and turn purple as the day progressed.

Don't do it.

If you are looking for a hobby, try gaming
Computer games, mobile games, anything
Yes i have wasted my career potential cos of them, but i enjoy what i do, and i will continue to enjoy it, and i would be able to continue doing it for the next 50-60 years if i want to.
Also, if i somehow de-addict myself from gaming, i dont have any permanent effects on my life decisions, i still get to grow old and do things like other people, it would only affect my past and not m future

Smoking sucks after a while apparently. So, you are not enjoying it anymore.
It is a long term decision, it will have effects even after you quit. So, even if you reach a point where cost benefit of smoking is no longer working out, you will not be able to change your decision cos your health will already be affected even if you de addict.

So, doing something which isnt enjoyable and has a post de-addiction effect. Think whether it is worth it.

Also, if you just wana do it because it is enjoyable and as humans we have the right to live our life enjoyably and do everything that gives us pleasure, then try postponing it.
I too want to try cigarettes, drugs etc., because i know they are enjoyable; but i follow a logic for myself;
Assuming, the average lifespan is 70 years for a normal person and for a smoker/drug addict is 55 years.
I also agree having a hobby of smoking/drugs is fun and it would suck to die without tying all these wonderful substances and enjoy them.
So, just start doing them after you're 50. Im pretty sure people who started smoking at 50 atleast lived till 65, so you get to smoke/drink/get wasted for 15 years, and only lose 5 years of your life. Also, at 50 you are no longer capable of physical exertions so you minimise the effect of smoking on your quality of life.
Say, you start smoking now and smoke for 15 years, and youre 40. You cant choose to do say a cross country bike ride, or a hard mountain trek. What you might think you will want to do in the future might not be known to you now. So, by starting to smoke now you will risk limiting you future options akin to dropping off from school in a way.

Also, due to exponential growth in medical science you might be able to substantially increase your lifespan if you just survive 5-10 years more due to innovations in technology, the treatment for the cancer due to smoking which you started at 50 might be available when youre 65 but might not be available when youre 45. Making life choices now which might increase your expected lifespan by 5 years, will probably translate into 15-20 years extra lifespan because if growth in medicine.

So, yeah smoking no sense to me atleast, unless im in the last 10-15 years of my expected lifespan. If you want something to take your mind off find something else, there are tons of games- try EU4, LoL, Dota whatever it will make you forget whatever youre trying to alleviate

Yeah, vaping is a pretty viable alternative. There's a weird social stigma surrounding people who vape, but as long as you don't care about that it's pretty rad.

You can even switch up between vaping thc and nicotine fairly easily. (Also my friend has a vape he uses to vape melatonin which I didn't know you could do. I took a small hit of that and was ready for a nice night's sleep by the time I got home. Very natural, very relaxed.)

Also I was an unproductive worker when I was a smoker. Every time things got hard I 'needed' a ciggie break. Now that I don't smoke, when things get hard, I just do them. I've finally started to utilise my potential since I stopped smoking.

Don't smoke. It makes you unreliable.

Adderall is also great. It's physically taxing/exhausting if you do it too often (three days in a row has proven to be too much for me), but if you can find a dosage/frequency that works for you it's a godsend.
I was on ritalin for a few months it created adrenal fatigue or something to the point I was losing my hair or something and getting strains in my neck or my jaw.

Then returning back to normal was hard.

If you're going to smoke for a hobby smoke something better than cigs such as cigars or smoke tobacco out of a pipe. It just sounds like you want to pick up a bad habit to complain about it later..

Hey, if cancer kills you before you develop alzheimers, that's a win, right?

Cocaine is much better.
I like smoking cigarettes when I'm barred out.

Usually go through just 2 packs in a week.

Well for the record, I meant tobacco but also figured getting some nicotine would be a good idea. I would use it as mental stimulation and stress reliever during moments of rest for remotivation and as I've said, this would be in opposition to pot instead, which generally inhibits that or changes it too much. Cigarettes don't satisfy the same craving so it has a chance of working without the side effect of too much mental stimulation or drowsiness, or other positive indicators such as the munchies. I know a few men who are heavy smokers but whose body are in shape. The key is getting plenty of exercise anyway, it would suck if you just say watched tv all day and smoke cigs and didn't at least get up and walk around a little.
But barring that, I didn't intend on making a habit of it, and would only do it when tired to see if it takes that away generally. Plus, I've always wanted to see how strong my will is when it comes to battling addiction. I believe that I can try some without getting addicted, and would be willing to smoke crack, meth, or heroin once each to see if I don't get addicted. It couldn't be that hard but it is a battle of mind and body physiology.
I already have a pipe to use for it and can also roll papers so that habit could be a little healthier than buying packs of whatever brands. So, in essence, this is just an attempt to replace a pot habit with something less cerebral and more appropriate for regular cognition.

If I had a nickel, for every time someone told me they weren't going to get addicted to something or even if they did get addicted they'd overcome it with willpower... and then then get hopelessly addicted later, I'd have about 80 cents. So far no one who's made that kind of statement to me has been able to live up to it.

Keep me in the loop pizzabreak. Large sample size is one of the keys to good science.

You're an INTP. Apathy is your nature. The only way you'll quit is if you can't be bothered to make money to buy more.

Like I said, try lobeline. (Ebay: Lobelia extract ~$20 max.) Just use it as a dip or put it in an e-cig or vape, I assume. Might have to adjust the tincture if high alcohol concentration makes it too harsh.

If you have never smoked before and you are 25 years or older, then go for it and smoke a cig every once in a while. The problem with starting is that it is a chemical addiction, which means you need more to get the same effect. This pull to get more is what does in a ton of people. When I was 12 and had my first cig, I knew it was "bad" but I had no idea what the ramifications to getting hooked would really be like. Now, 18 years after I have had my first I wish I would have never had started with that first one. I remember the times I smoked as a kid, it was exhilarating. But that time is long past and now I'm at my wits end on how to quit. I'm a pack a day smoker, so more than all of you. If you DO choose to smoke, get some pure tobacco and roll your own. You can get cheap pipe tobacco that is natural, a roller of some kind and papers (with or without the filter). It ends up costing me a dollar a day because I have found the absolute cheapest way for me to smoke.

If you're gonna do it, it's definitely worth rolling your own. Champion Legendary Ruby is the way to go.

Before I quit at the start of this year, I'd smoke between 20-40 rollies a day.

QT is right that it starts out pleasurable, but over time becomes more and more of a crutch. The enjoyment becomes less and less until you get to a point that you wake up in a morning and it's all you can think about despite feeling repulsed by the thought of smoking. Then at some point during the morning you give in and have a cigarette. It's gross at first and you want to put it out, but then by the time you finish it, you're already ready for another, and so the cycle begins anew. Damn nicotine.

Don't smoke. It's fucking shit.

Or smoke.

Or whatever. Fuck it.

I miss smoking so much.

It's been almost 9 years since I quit, and I still feel like I'm missing a limb. I started when I was like 12 or 13 years old, and by the time I finally quit, I had smoked for like half my life. It was a part of me. It was one of my greatest pleasures in life. I'd feel that tightness in my chest, that little pang of anxiety, and I'd grab a smoke, light it, inhale, and find instant relief.

The first thing I did everyday was smoke. The last thing I did was smoke. I'd smoke during any break during the day, any interruption in activity, after (and preferably during) every social interaction, after and before every meal, just all the fucking time.

It was so filthy too. You always stink. Your fingers stink, you hair stinks, your clothes stink. If you need to hide the stink, then the effort of hiding it took longer than the actual smoking (and at the end, you were ready for another).

If I went more than about 4 hours without smoking, I couldn't take a deep breath. I couldn't even get half way there. The effort would set off a 5-minute coughing episode that ended in so much chest pain that I wanted to cry. I just learned to not breathe.

Also, I got sick all the time. I always had a cold, or bronchitis, and I didn't give a fuck. I'd switch to menthols, which hurt my throat a little less, and keep smoking.

I quit when they were around $4.50 a pack. I bitched about the price then. I can't imagine the kind of money people spend these days. It's crazy.

Anyway, my point is, you should totally smoke. It'll be your favorite thing ever within a matter of weeks. You won't know how you even functioned without it.

Apparently I'm the only one who found cutting out cigarettes to be one of the easiest things in the world?

This is surprising to me considering my severe lack of willpower and tendency to fall into addictive/obsessive habits at the drop of a hat.

When I quit, it surprisingly wasn't hard. It was barely even an event. I literally just stopped.

Woke up one day, attempted to have a cigarette. Put it in my mouth, stood there for about a minute, but it back in the pack and never smoked again.

That was an all too relatable read.

Honestly if they were $4.50 a pack here, I'd probably still be smoking. They're about $25 a pack now - and it's almost all tax. Our government is greedy like that.

I started smoking in november 2015.One day, i say to my best friend to pick some cigarette from her dad.On school break I and some friends hide in one hall and i light up.Like everyone who smoke for the first time that was very fanny and awkwardly experience. But I continue, buy my first box and than everyting started.Smoking with other classmates, smoking on the street, on parties, everywhere expect at my home, because my parents don't know that I smoke. They are passionate anti smokers so Im silent. My favourite cigarete is Camel Yellow, with very special and nice taste.

You can try smoking if you want, but my advice is not to smoke at home because you will became dependent than, and just 4-5 cigarretes on day.Don't be a slave.

I smoke a little and love it...but the addiction thing is totally personal and something I don't really struggle with.

My only advice is, if you do decide to smoke, go with a pipe or roll your own. The quantity of tobacco in one normal cig is a TON. I roll my own and can make 2-3 hand rolled out of 1 pre-rolled. Then I feel totally fine smoking 1 or 2 a day, which isn't even a whole pre-rolled cig.

Tobacco has been great to me (which is totally counterintuitive to our culture and modern understanding to health).
