When I asked Fukyo, I think it was 2 weeks.

I did threaten to flay him with cooked spaghetti if they don't set up an actual thread to post those announcements in (to avoid confusion), but the intimidation factor simply wasn't there, I admit: Perhaps I should cook up some fettucini instead.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

There does seem to be a lack of informing others about bans.

4 years ago this was not the case. There were threads informing the community which members had been banned and why.

2 weeks seems far too harsh in my opinion. He provided some of the more amusing topics.

Admins/moderators sort it out you lazy articles. You are admins/moderators for a reason... If you can't be bothered to do it, then we need to find other admins/moderators.

Well, it WAS posted... just edited directly in the post that apparently broke the camel's back.

Which of course I never saw because I never even had gone into that thread. The only people who would know would be those who actually read that particular thread.

Public bulletin board for forum-related announcements: Good.

You do realise that own8ge is currently banned right?

This may be a bit rude, but thank god.

I will not miss him. :phear:

Well, perhaps their method needs revising as it's clearly not informing the community as a whole. Editing someone's post does not reset that post as being unread.

You don't even need to create a new thread every time someone is banned. Just have a ban thread and put all the information in there. It takes no more than 2 minutes to do.

They could even use this one...

People need to be a little less lazy and look for answers themselves. Don't expect to be spoon fed everything.

Threads are still made when permanent bans occur. Every single banning wasn't announced even four years ago, if I remember correctly, also four years ago temporary bans weren't used as a form of warning.

In regards to own8ge, he was already a subject to moderation due to his highly aggressive and crass behavior, and you'd know this if you looked around. So, two weeks is actually pretty lenient for a guy like him.

As a seasoned moderator myself, I can tell you that this is nothing but poor moderating. Telling the community to investigate banned members themselves is pathetic.

And this forum ironically appears to be filled with a bunch of oversensitive softies.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

I am going to make it my habit to leave little messages to mod staff peppered in out-of-the-way threads. And if they don't see them, it's because they're lazy asses.

I mean, seriously. How far do we want to take this?

"I'm sorry, sir -- we did post an announcement saying you needed to get your driver's license renewed. Of course, we posted it here in our front lobby, but it's your own damned fault for not driving in here and noticing."

If you don't want to communicate, don't bother posting anything at all instead of playing silly games with membership. I'd rather not deal with the pretense. (That's said as a former mod elsewhere.) it's not like you're being asked for fill out forms in triplicate, it's about efficient communication of forum happenings that would take you half a minute max to apply.

How can you possibly guess whether someone is a moderator on another forum?

As a moderator, you are supposed to moderate the forum. This includes notifying the community of any changes including bans be them temporary or permanent...

I find it amusing that you accuse others of being lazy when it takes 2 minutes to inform the entire forum that [User A] has been banned for [x amount of time] for [z reason/s]

You are creating confusion using the current poor method. This goes against the role of a moderator.

1. Any member who is in the danger zone get personal warnings.

2. Us knowing who get temp bans isn't really something we have the right to know, them telling us is a voluntary gesture from their part.

3. What's with the bitchy attitude?

The bans so far have been unsurprising. I think they went too soft on ownage who has been a very clear nuisance.

Well, except someone getting banned for a limited period of time isn't actually as important as having your driver's license renewed.

Seriously? Playing games? Pretense?

If I wanted to play games, I think I would take a completely different path than failing to raise alarm of someone being temporarily banned in highly visible place. You know, like going into the admin control panel and fucking shit up for everyone.

Any member who has ever approached me with a question has gotten a prompt reply as to why anyone was banned, and will continue to. Not to mention that on forum questions get addressed too. I'm not hiding anything or trying to fuck with people.

No offense Jenny, but while I can see the merit in criticizing me for not putting up a visible note, your insinuations of game playing are rather unfounded.

and..also, your tone was rather....erm, unexpected. Not sure why you felt so provoked.

Aggressive posturing is great and all, but sometimes suggesting changes without intentionally (I sure do hope it's intentional) inciting ill-will between you and others might be more beneficial towards just about any ends.

Not to suggest anyone is a crude aggressively emotional power asserting crybaby or anything.

Oh, wait.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

Given that I'm the poster whom criticized Jenny, are you guys talking about me? I tried INTPcentral and am certainly not what I consider an INTPc member. I just didn't agree with Jenny's theoretical characterizations.

I don't remember you criticizing me (but sometimes I miss posts... or don't even notice the userid of the person I'm talking to).

Well see this would have been better to say. I think this is what frustrates people with typology is when someone replaces the concept of a type or functions with their own personal experiences and biases. Then one person becomes representative of all the people in a type and the concepts people are trying to learn become murky and unclear. And this tends to piss people off...naturally...and there can only be disagreement.

Well, it was more shorthand, and I didn't really know I had an "audience" from INTPc who would come over here and take it to an extreme I didn't anticipate. (I mean, I come online in part so I don't always have to constantly edit my thoughts for consumption.) My circle of friends and acquaintances runs the entire gamut of MBTI, tbh.

But in any case, I'm glad I had an opportunity to better explain what I meant. And if someone enjoys INTPc's current style, there's nothing wrong with that.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

Well, except someone getting banned for a limited period of time isn't actually as important as having your driver's license renewed.

That's what you'd think. Five years of dealing with members, and I was taking to task a lot for things I didn't consider a big deal, but to some members they are.

Seriously? Playing games? Pretense?

If I wanted to play games, I think I would take a completely different path than failing to raise alarm of someone being temporarily banned in highly visible place. You know, like going into the admin control panel and fucking shit up for everyone.

Don't overread, let's get back to the scenario here:

I had to ask the mods specifically if the guy was banned, and you had to waste time chatting with me on my Wall to let me know he had been.

I mention how it would be a lot more efficient and convenient to just have a simple thread (like most forums do, honestly) so that members know if someone is banned or not... it's like suggesting, "Hey, maybe we should wash our dishes after we use them," it's not rocket science.

And you just kinda blow it off and have the audacity to say, "It's your problem, if you don't happen to find the right post in some random thread to read, then you'll remained uninformed." And make the request sound unreasonable... despite the fact that it would make everyone a little more informed, easy to find info on what's been going on, and save you time from these kinds of discussions AND having people ask you what's going on and having you explain it multiple times.

I don't get what the big deal is. Unless you're just screwing around.

Big-picture perspective: Honestly, whatever. I'll just care less about this place, the more hassle I have to deal with in order to stay informed. And I'll trust the mods a little less when there are other issues, if you aren't helpful in other areas.

I mean, it's all just cause and effect, isn't it? So just know what you're buying into, that's all.

No offense Jenny, but while I can see the merit in criticizing me for not putting up a visible note, your insinuations of game playing are rather unfounded.

Like I said, that's you cherry-picking that word out of my post and making it a hot-button, rather than just seeing it as part of the "big picture" comment I was making. Game-playing = creating unnecessary hassle.

and..also, your tone was rather....erm, unexpected. Not sure why you felt so provoked.

Well, remember, sometimes I try different tactics, when the old ones aren't working. I wanted to see how you'd respond and if you'd take things more seriously. At least I got a more serious response.

But there's also the fact I think your current approach is seriously bad, from an efficiency POV. Can you give me a good reason why it wouldn't be easier for EVERYONE concerned to just have a thread that clarify what happens on the forum for EVERYONE, reducing the need for you to have to personally explain things to individuals?

You'll still have your thread argument, but really... is there any other reason besides stubbornness that you're not choosing to do the obvious? I'm having trouble seeing another foundation here.

Anyway, I've stated my opinion on this, and I don't want to belabor it, so... unless the conversation goes in a new direction, I don't really have anything more to add.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

Firstly, as I mentioned at the time you banned me, I am impartial to being banned. I wasn't resentful that I was banned. My goal at the time of banning switched to getting Snafupants banned for being foolish - which I succeeded in. My own banning was of little consequence.

I do see a lot of bans on here that I find a little premature. Perhaps people are too touchy over what is being said. Either that or they think this forum is a more serious place than it actually is.

The aggression you see is purely from your own interpretation. Text carries no objective emotional weight or tone.

I have criticised the handling of community notification because it is severely lacking in terms of communication.

This is because:

The mods are… The mods are… The mods areThe mods are
The mods are… The mods are… The mods areThe mods are
The mods are… The mods are… The mods are… The mods are…
The mods are… The mods areThe mods are… The mods are…
The mods are… The mods areThe mods are… The mods are…
The mods areThe mods areThe mods are… The mods are…

Updating people's posts does not mark them as unread so people who have read the topic will not know that a member has been banned unless they actively go back into the topic.

There have been a few members in this thread that did not know that Own8ge was banned or for how long for. This is a lack of communication on the moderators behalf; not the members.

The roles of a moderator are to:

  • Keep the peace
  • Minimise thread derailment
  • Encouraging a sense of community (this includes informing the community of any changes)
  • Forum maintenance in terms of tidyness.

I'm not making this list up. It's standard forum stuff that can be found by a simple Google search.

It is the responsibility of the forum mods to actively inform its members of users that have been banned whether temporary or permanent.

The current method is terrible as it is passive and creates confusion. This can be proven in a number of threads where people say: [X] has been banned?! When? Why?

It takes less than 2 minutes to inform the entire community about members being banned (including a reason) by posting it in a ban thread. This would eradicate much of the confusion and keep the community in the know and improve communication.

Forum mods should not be lazy. If you can't be bothered to moderate properly, why are you a moderator?

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

Jenny, I absolutely don't agree that making things inconvenient for others is game playing, and I singled that out because I think it's simply wrong.

That said, I can acknowledge the criticism regarding how I notify the forum, as I already said (even on your visitor messaging wall - by the way, the first part of the reply was intended to be humorous), but I got tired of the (mostly) demanding and occasionally bitchy attitude that mods get, and I responded in kind.

The criticism pertaining to notification has been noted and taken into account.

You understand that banning people permanently actually takes a pretty long time on this forum? You have some names of banned members you want to name and discuss?

Also, in regards to own8ge, do you think that a member who is continuously hostile to people in a very blunt manner should be allowed just roam free?

He wasn't continuously hostile to everyone and the hostility he showed was mild at best. So I guess people are a little too touchy.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

I think the mods should be more trigger happy with permabans especially.

They shouldn't be overly apologetic or concerned with how harsh or subjective the forum population might think they are either.

There have been and are several people who are generally a strong negative influence in regards to affecting how far away from the "ideal forum" (as the mods see it) this forum is. Justifying a ban with them crossing certain "lines" with a comfortably massive margin is not a necessity.

As Ragnar said, this forum is not a democracy. The mods are not there to serve the forum population. The mods are there to safeguard the ideal forum. Most of the mods and ex-mods are far from happy with how the forum currently is. This is not a country with a set of very specific laws. It's a social group. Who are good to have here and whose presence overall makes this a significantly qualitatively worse place? Goal-based bans in that one bases a decision on imagining how the forum will be without someone can be a better way of dealing with things than infraction based bans.

Have confidence in yourselves, führers. I do.

I do.

As a seasoned moderator myself, I can tell you that this is nothing but poor moderating. Telling the community to investigate banned members themselves is pathetic.

And this forum ironically appears to be filled with a bunch of oversensitive softies.

FIX IT

The current method used by mods regarding banned users is laughable.

Fukyo's attempt to justify the laziness is equally as amusing.

I already said why the method used was poor in previous posts above. Clearly you didn't read them.

That's because you're a mod; you're in the loop. You know who has been banned...

If you can't see the benefit of the alternative method for the community as a whole, then quite frankly you are a bit dense.

I did also say that 2 weeks was too harsh for the so called crime committed.

and that the forum appears to be filled with oversensitive softies.

So you didn't read them after all.

Next I'll probably be banned for being a jerk

Long quote list is long. We moderate how we see fit. We do make an attempt at being fair and making sure everyone gets their voice. We also attempt to maintain a sense of privacy for the users and their multitude of complaints. Finally, we try to minimize the effect of a banned user on the rest of the forum as a whole.

Doing all that at times takes subtlety and at times takes a punch to the face. Since we don't work on rotation and we don't have divided up responsibilities we mod when we have time and energy. Our lives are not devoted to this forum as no one's should be. So, I ask that you forgive us if we are a little sloppy at times.

I have to ask: Why all the angry frustration?

Not all mods are power hungry monsters moving in the shadows, banning behind closed doors, and refusing to admit fault. Some may dislike our methods, as it is impossible to please everyone, and frankly I don't care. Here is why: I see a lot of mod bullying. By that I mean users who imagine slights, find nitpicky issues, and refuse to show a single ounce of understanding that mods are people to. So, if you bitch and bully and then insult and your suggestion is never implemented it's because like most people on the planet we don't appreciate those tactics.

Yeah, I've been wondering that, too.

Seems a little ironic that you'd say this right after flying off the handle like a fairy with a toothache because the moderators didn't meet your standards of how they communicate temporary bans to the rest of the community.

Re: Who is the most influential person on this forum?

I am neither angry or frustrated. My main area of critique was lack of communication to the community as a whole on temporary bans.

I just chose a method of approach that gets the quickest response from those whom it involved. It may have seemed harsh, but the message was received far quicker than any other approach.

My posts do appear to become more direct as the faults are brushed off by lame excuses. Yes you are humans (mostly), but if you can't moderate properly, you either have too few mods or the incorrect people for the job.

As for mod bullying, you have to ask yourself why it happens. Good mods do not get bullied. <--- don't read too much into this

To be perfectly honest, I don't care how the moderators do their jobs. I saw an issue that may have helped others and took it from there.

The ban list approach is more economic if you think about it. But if it isn't taken on board, don't think I won't sleep at night.

Finally, my comment about being banned for being a jerk was merely a sarcastic comment referencing what Fukyo said in an earlier post.

I guess people are a little too serious on here too.

I think you preemptively answered your own hypothetical question.
