Alright you bunch of computer geeks:

How fast do you type in wpm?

If you're not sure, use this website: http://10fastfingers.com/typing-test/english

Then, after a minute of typing, click on 'screenshot' right next to 'result' and 'insert image' on your post.

(Such a useful talent.)

...This is actually sort of awkward...

I HAVE NOW MARKED THIS SITE WITH INTP TERRITORY - I AM SECOND ON TOP RANKINGS! I AM NOT TRYING TO BOAST.. (yes.. yes I am) ... I HAVE THE FINGERS OF HERMES ... be proud of me guys.

P.S. cocaine.

well, that is interesting: i did it again, without hasten, without holding my breath, like i would usually type, when i type what is on my mind and making somewhat sure i won't make any mistakes, expecting to be much slower, but i was exactly as fast:

wait, no there IS a difference, just not in the WPM

and i'm astonished again, because i felt like i was really slow this time ... apparently my sense of speed isn't reliable ...

7even do you follow the standard touch type technique? I touch type, but I don't really follow the optimal technique. On my left I use all 5 fingers correctly, but on my right I only use my index finger. I think this slows me down a bit.

...Impressive (in its own special way).

lol... Yes I have deformed hands and so type with three fingers. If one could count the words of all my posts and divide by 5, one could get a sense of all the time I have invested/wasted on this forum these past 4 years...

QWERTY isn't very helpful for fast typing in Portuguese

Yeah. Both 4 fingers of my left hand placed on 'asdf' and 4 fingers of my right on 'jkl;' - thumbs on the space bar. Though when I'm touch typing they're basically parallel (hovering right over, by roughly a cm) to those letters. Tried your way, I'm pretty sure that would significantly slow you down.

I'm somewhat surprised people make mistakes. Usually one type from memory, so the knowledge may simply not be there. But here the words are right in front of your eyes. I found it pretty easy to get the words right, it was just to look carefully before I typed.

the finger-coordination makes the mistakes. has to do with timing more, than with spacial coordination. i mean, coordination happens in time, if timing is distorted, than the distance of a moving finger ist miscalculated.

another type of error happens in my unconscious routine, like i see "to" and i think "to", but my hand writes "two". huh? who put the w in there? no one here knows! of course i understand the correct spelling for both words, but apparently my subconsciousness, that monkey who does both verbalisation of what was read and the typing, he doesn't sense the difference between two and to, he mispronounces to as two or he mishears his own to as two, and then he types two. something like that. who knows what the monkey is thinking.

for me sensotardation implies, that the whole routine of writing is subconscious, my mind is in the world of content having so many thoughts but no thoughts about letters or fingers, just the auditory part of language, the inner monologue, is conscious, the eyes looking at the screen are reading what i'm about to type, not what i have just typed and whatever comes out needs to be checked intentionally after it's out, that an extra decision, taking lots of extra time, for extra reading (the focusing of my eyes is particularly slow!) of what i have typed. this interrupts my though process violently. that's why i usually never correct anything until i am finished with the whole text, when i write from my mind.

Golly. I should learn to type without looking. And to go back and correct my mistakes.

I usually range from 70 to 100, so that's good-ish for me. I find that the tests with text that makes sense rather than random words are more realistic (and I do better at them) because I think I read ahead and then my fingers type what's in my brain rather than what's on the screen...but me reading ahead in this just distracts me. OR MAYBE I'M JUST MAKING EXCUSES. :)

Why don't you use all your 5 fingers with your right hand?
Tried using my index with 1 hand; slowed me down... a lot.
Probably take you a week to get used to it, especially because you've got the left sorted and get the general idea.

I've been trying actually, that's how I got my speed up. Still have trouble involving all my fingers at once, words that have sequences of letters all on my right hand give me the most trouble but I'm getting there! :D

I never really considered improving my typing since I was already pretty fast, but I may as well get faster at it at some point. If I can type an extra 20 words per minute over the rest of my life, I'll be sure to save a decent amount of time!

I don't really know of a way to measure it, but I always write cursive as well and pretty fast. Mine's not that neat though =(

I use the exact same technique as you and seem to have hit a brick wall at about 120wpm (iirc my highest ever was 126), literally can't go faster than that without making a lot of mistakes with my right hand.

Here's the vid of my 120:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGCUPy6MU3w

Words per minute (WPM) 120
Keystrokes 605
(599 | 6)
Correct words 114
Wrong words 1

Problem is it would probably take a very long time to relearn the right hand.. as it's all muscle memory ingrained from about a decade of PC use.

Shit that is so weird to me that you guys have got one hand figured out and the other not.

That's like going to the gym, doing bicep curls with a pair of dumbbells with different weights on each dumbbell...

Pretty much what that video looks like is how I type as well. I've started learning to use my right hand correctly but I'm not sure it will be worth relearning 10 years of using computers. The time it takes to get to 110+ WPM is probably longer than is worth it!

now i need a way to fast forward this video :smoker:

btw i have honestly improved to 65 wpm ... (but with 5 typos, still it's good to know that i can move my hands so fast, it has a lot to do with really trying hard, it just feels so unnatural)

I seem to average 65 wpm. Got 68 on my fourth try though.
You people up in the 100s must have extra fingers. o.O

I've noticed that having to capitalize Indian and putting the ' in it's is what really throws me off when I am trying to type my fastest.

How is 163 even possible? :O:O:O Did you cheat?

I'm pretty fast if I put my mind to it, but I can't break 130 (accurately). I CANNOT. Maybe got 131 once, but that's about it. I know I'm relatively fast, but I feel I should be faster. (The fastest in the world are insanely so.) I have a tendency to hit the keys really hard though (I think it's from piano/massaging) and I think I waste a lot of speed that way. Whenever I've been on skype with someone and had to type something, they're horrified by how my keyboard sounds. (Someone described it as hundreds of horses galloping, someone else as heavy machinery or something similar.)

I'll try with a lighter touch.

*edit
Should note my standard isn't 130, it's more like 125 or so, and if I'm just typing casually maybe 100. 130's my maximum max.

Also, proper touch-typing really does the trick if you want to speed up I think. I never learnt differently and I'm generally faster than most non-standard typists. I've noticed having to look at the keyboard really slows people down. If you move past that stage speed should increase quite a bit.

I do type a line ahead. I don't have that keyboard though.... that's interesting.

But surely not every crazily fast typist has a tiny keyboard.

Nah, just improved with time. 200+ is possible, so 163 is very possible. ;p

The key to write "unreasonable" quick with some practice (200+ WPM) on a test like this is:
1: a small keyboard, something like this, every milisecond counts:

Yeah, keyboard makes a pretty significant difference. I use a laptop, and its keyboard is pretty adaptable. I'd slow down by anywhere within the range of 0-40 wpm on other keyboards.
That keyboard is tiny though, wouldn't be able to type on that... I've got a normal sized keyboard.
It's more about the keys on the keyboards texture, size, and sensitivity; among other things... I guess.

You spend too much time on a computer :elephant:

Haha this is true; not so much now though; basically learnt to type this fast when I was a kid (gaming..). Now I'd say I spent a reasonable amount of time on my computer on productive tingz. (...alright, that's sort of a lie..)

You got a problem?! :elephant: (that's me hijacking your butterphant)
