All know, or should, the duties of the two big boys in surveillance and reporting; however there are also little ravenlets who are part of the family, permanently children who strut and caw small amusing incidents.

I've stopped blogging for a while, but these snippets wouldn't be worth writing up for a blog; so this is a bloglet merely to record small delights found on the web at --- almost --- random.

He Made Her Realise What It Was To Be A Woman !

Now generally when some old gaffer beams and says, "A present for a leetle girl !", one thinks of some happy Italian grandpapa surrounded by the bambinos upon his honoured birthday, or maybe some aged, but courtly, gentleman handing a posy of flowers in the park; or even some smiling retiree, wife by his side, giving out candy to kids selling 'Girl Scout Cookies' in some vaguely terrifying Reader's Digest sub-Norman Rockwell pic.

In Old Mecca, it was different...

Although when Random House canceled publication of Sherry Jones’ trashy novel about Muhammad’s nine-year-old wife, Aisha, it was succumbing not to actual threats but to the sheer prospect of threats, no one has accused the venerable publisher of “Islamophobia.” Even in today’s hyper-politically correct public square, everyone seems to take for granted that when certain Muslims don’t like something, they threaten to murder the people involved.

Sherry Jones is an unlikely candidate to be the next Salman Rushdie, and her novel is hardly in the same league as Dutch politician Geert Wilders’ film Fitna, which vividly depicted Muslims acting upon the dictates of the Qur’an’s violent passages. The Jewel of Medina, by contrast, is a Harlequin Romance-level trivialization of Muhammad’s marriage to Aisha, luridly depicting the child as finding, at the moment of the consummation of her marriage to Muhammad, “the bliss I had longed for all my life” – yes, her entire nine years.

The First Time As Tragedy, The Second Time As Farce...

Members should no doubt be at least aware of the splendid Something Awful forums. Whilst never a member there myself, I have a strenuous admiration for how it is run and what they do.

However their arrangements for internal discipline are byzantine as can be seen by studying the whole document presented: from that list let's look at the history of the Comedy Lolocaust...

Anti-furryism and the Comedy Lolocaust

Long ago, the posting of " furry " porn, or depictions of anthropomorphic animals committing sexual acts, was not against the forum rules in FYAD. When this happened, the poster was usually rebuked if they did not include a warning in the thread's subject text, and perhaps had their preference in pornography mocked.

As time progressed, furry threads continued to be posted, mostly if not solely in FYAD. As FYAD is not intended to have any rules, the posters were not stopped, though they were taunted endlessly by the other members of FYAD. Lowtax one day decided, however, that furry porn would no longer be allowed in FYAD, setting in motion a chain of events later to be known as the "Comedy Lolocaust."

As the first step of the Lolocaust, Lowtax created a subforum of "The Goddamn Shithouse" (a place where some FYAD-goers got their own forums and became IK of them) dedicated to the posting of furry porn, called "The Furry Concentration Camp ." This kept all furry threads out of FYAD and in one central location. The denizens of this subforum, along with any others proven to have furry tendencies, were then given custom titles of a large yellow star with the title " Yiff " on top, a reference to a slang term for intercourse in the furry community. Once all of the forum's furries were identified, they were then permanently relegated to the Furry Concentration Camp.

The Camp stayed open for a number of weeks, and while furries couldn't leave the forum, others could come in. The Furry Concentration Camp was soon riddled with threads mocking furries in every way, shape and form. However, when these threads began to die down, the furries who could only post in the Camp soon began to congregate with each other, and only with each other. It became a complete community in itself.

Eventually, the "final solution" of the Lolocaust was set into place, and the denizens of the FCC were finally banned, effectively ending the mass proliferation of furry porn in FYAD. Currently, anti-furryism is seen as old hat, and in general is not acceptable unless intensely humorous. Furries are still subjected to waves of banning, but there are now several forum members known to be furries who are generally accepted within the community.

Now Is Not The Time To Weaken Our Resolve

The true delight, as ever upon the internet, is more in the comments than the text with ferocious spluttering denouncement of all those who would hinder the Justice of Superman being meted out to the enemies of all men simply through wooly-minded, namby-pamby, cowardly use of principles.

Still, here it is. I have changed one word in the text: before opening the link, can you guess what the original word may be ? If you try very, very hard I think you can !

As the session begins, the detainee stands naked, except for a hood covering his head. Guards shackle his arms and legs, then slip a small collar around his neck. The collar will be used later; according to Gestapo guidelines for interrogations, it will serve as a handle for slamming the detainee's head against a wall.

After removing the hood, the interrogator opens with a slap across the face -- to get the detainee's attention -- followed by other slaps, the guidelines state. Next comes the head-slamming, or "walling," which can be tried once "to make a point," or repeated again and again.

"Twenty or thirty times consecutively" is permissible, the guidelines say, "if the interrogator requires a more significant response to a question." And if that fails, there are far harsher techniques to be tried.

White Noise

It doesn't do much for me, the lack of variation --- unlike the glorious sound of rain --- irritates after a while, yet many people find this stuff calming.

Don't Be The Ones To Say We Didn't Warn Ya

There's a fire comin' down through the hole in the sky
Mercury is in retrograde, the tide is gettin' high
Funny people talkin', strangers in this town
Better get our act together before Sunday comes around

It's comin', I know it's comin'
Don't be the ones to say we didn't warn ya
Disneyland is burning and they're sendin' in all the clowns
All aboard… Last stop, California.

So come on all you ravers, you ranters, you squares
The mothership is a-landin' soon, cut off all your hair
'Tune in, turn on, drop out,' the Doctor said before he died
Time to push the button, 'n see what's on the other side

It's comin', I know it's comin'
Don't be the ones to say we didn't warn ya
Disneyland is burning, send in all the clowns
All aboard… Last stop, California.
All aboard… Last stop, California.

Then They Ate Them

Some information upon the Mayan civilization is amusingly imparted in a series of articles by a Dr. Herman Smith called Dig It, in a rather obscure site from Belize.

A few excerpts...

In seeking the cause for the rapid (probably less than fifty years) decline of the Maya world, scholars have considered numerous possibilities:
1. The Maya were abducted by aliens in UFO's. (Actually this explanation's more popular with the National Inquirer crowd and is generally given short shrift by the academics.)

2. The Maya were wiped out by a huge hurricane or some other natural disaster. With Maya numbering in the millions all over Central America- Well, I don't think so.

3. Everybody died of disease or warfare. No archeological evidence to support either of these theories.

4. There was some sort of peasant revolt or revolution against the ruling class that caused the system to break down. This explanation has a lot of appeal to our twentieth century mind-set because recent history is full of revolutions, but a thousand years ago any notion of individual rights and freedoms usually died with the person that thought them up. Remember Spartacus?

The incident that is foremost in my mind concerning my dinosaur aversion ocurred on a flight from Corpus Christi, Texas to Denver where I was scheduled to attend an archeological conference. Arriving early at the airport I slipped into the cocktail lounge for a pre-flight adult beverage. A wondrous sight greeted me. Seated at the bar was a young woman I judged to be in her mid-thirties who was obviously well on her way to a very relaxed flight, with or without an Aircraft. Aside from looking a little worn around the edges, like she had been "rode hard and put away wet" once or twice, she was not unattractive. Her dress consisted of a simple white sleeveless form-fitting number made all the more fetching by the numerous round holes which served to display more female pulchritude than one is accustomed to seeing in public these days. I thought the various tattoos were a nice touch as well. She was busy with a dissertation on fear of flying when the flight to Denver began to board. As fate would have it, she was assigned to seat 21 A while I was in 21 C. With no one between us my tipsy new-found friend began a non-stop monologue about her life in Corpus Christi. It seems she was a topless dancer on her way to Colorado for a couple of weeks of "guest dancing" at the ski resorts. (I didn't ask what "guest dancing" involved.) A couple of more drinks and my blonde dancer friend found herself sufficiently fueled to keep up a discourse on the seamier side of life in South Texas for the next two hours. Just as we began our approach to the Denver airport she seemed to sort of run out of steam. I had not spoken ten words to her on our voyage west.
Now, at last she turned to me and said, "What do YOU do?". I replied rather tersely, "I am an archeologist." Her eyes seem to slip out of focus as if some object outside the aircraft had suddenly attracted her attention. After a moment she shifted her eyes back to me with a glazed look of recognition and said, "Archeologist ... oh I just love them dinosaurs!"

Dear Dr. Smith,
Thank you for your latest submission to the Institute, labeled "93211-D, layer seven, next to the clothesline post-Hominid skull." We have given this specimen a careful and detailed examination, and regret to inform you that we disagree with your theory that represents conclusive proof of the presence of Early Man in Belize two million years ago.

Rather, it appears that what you have found is the head of a Barbie doll, of the variety that one of our staff, who has small children, believes to be "Malibu Barbie." It is evident that you have given a great deal of thought to the analysis of this specimen, and you may be quite certain that those of us who are familiar with your prior work in the field were loathe to come to contradiction with your findings.

However, we do feel that there are a number of physical attributes of the specimen which might have tipped you off to its modern origin:
1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilized bone.
2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately nine cubic centimeters, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified proto-homonids.
3. The dentition pattern evident on the skull is more consistent with the common domesticated dog than it is with the ravenous man-eating Pliocene clams you speculate roamed the wetlands during that time.
This latter finding is certainly one of the most intriguing hypotheses you have submitted in your history with this institution, but the evidence seems to weigh rather heavily against it. Without going into too much detail, let us say that:
A. The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that a dog has chewed on.
B. Clams don't have teeth.
It is with feelings tinged with melancholy that we must deny your request to have the specimen carbon-dated.

The aim of this rather limited warfare was to take prisoners. Low status captives generally wound up as slaves to their captor, but high-status captives were scheduled for ritual sacrifice. The deliberate taking of a human life was deemed necessary to sanctify certain ritual occasions, such as the ascendancy to the throne by a new ruler or the dedication of a new building. Naturally the capture of a rival ruler was highly prized, as the sacrifice of the unfortunate individual lent extra importance to the occasion. The usual method of such a sacrifice was decapitation in a public ceremony. Aside from decapitation, the favored method in Postclassic times was a trick acquired from the Mexican cultures to the north, the removal of the heart. Women and children were sacrificed just as often as men The intended victim was stripped and painted blue before being led to a courtyard or temple where the victim would be placed face-up over a convex altar-like stone also painted blue. The arms and legs of the victim were held by specially designated priests while a fourth, called the nacom, would penetrate the victim's chest with a flint knife just below the left breast. Reaching inside the chest cavity, the nacom would pull out the still beating heart and hand it to another priest, who would then smear the blood on that idol to which the sacrifice had been made. If the sacrifice had taken place on the top of a pyramid, the corpse would be thrown to the courtyard below where priests of lower rank would skin the victim except for the hands and feet. The skin would then be worn by the officiating priest who would solemnly dance among the spectators. If the victim had been an especially brave warrior his body might be butchered and eaten by the nobles and other spectators.

A bow and arrow was also used in human sacrifice. The victim was stripped, painted blue and bound to a stake. According to a sixteenth century .account, " The foul priest in vestments went up and wounded the victims in parts of shame, whether it was a man or woman, and drew blood and came down and anointed the face of the idol with it."

Dancers, all armed with bows and arrows " began one after another to shoot at his heart ... in this manner they made his whole chest ... like a hedgehog of arrows"
A recently discovered painting at Tikal shows a man who has been bound to a stake and disemboweled.

The famous Sacred Cenote (a natural well) located at Chichen-Itza was found to contain numerous skeletons of men, women and children who were sacrificial victims. Bishop de Landa, in the sixteenth century reported: "Into this well they have the custom of throwing Men alive as a sacrifice to the gods in times of drought, and they believed they did not die though they never saw them."

As bad as all this sounds the Maya were amateurs when it came to human sacrifice on a massive scale. The Aztecs of Central. Mexico, many years later, once sacrificed twenty thousand people in a single ceremony to commemorate the dedication of a new temple. Then they ate them.

Prophet Muhammad, He Said...

Glancing with just some almost-sympathy at the plight of the three men who were sentenced for robbery in an Islamic court the other day, and now need to adjust to life as amputees, I noticed a link to Palestine.

***

MOGADISHU, SomaliaSix masked men used machetes to carry out amputations on three men accused of robbery by a Somali Islamist court, a witness said Saturday.

Abdulahi Hassan Afrah said the two of the men had both a hand and a foot cut off and a third had only a foot cut off after the Islamic court in the southern port city of Kismayo realized he was already disabled. He said a crowd of around 400 people, mainly women and children, watched the sentence carried out Friday on the three screaming young men.

"It was most painful thing I have ever seen," he said.

A spokesmen for the al-Shabab militia, Sheik Hassan Yaqub Ali, said the three had admitted robbing passengers on board a truck heading to Kismayo.

None of the three were allowed to appeal the sentence or had access to a lawyer…

In 2008, the courts in Kismayo ordered a 13-year-old gang rape victim to be stoned to death. But amputations and public floggings are more common.

Then again, at least there was their humanistic regard for Disability Rights in only chopping off a foot.

The link on the page led to the Hamas Children's TV character of Assad The Jew-Eating Bunny. Google-Youtube, alas, has pulled the videos of this charming scamp, and Al-Aqsa TV has once again gone on to other cuddly personalities to induce 11-yr-olds to opt for martyrdom, but this particular moral lesson must ever remain vivid and fresh for all the kids who watched it.

And called in. Urging the Meat-Cleaver of Justice.

Hamas TV Bunny Assud Is Tempted by Satan to Steal and Is Sentenced by Children Viewers to Have His Hand Chopped Off

Following are excerpts from a Hamas children’s show, titled “The Pioneers of Tomorrow,” which aired on Al-Aqsa TV on July 11, 2008.

Assud the bunny: In the name of Allah, I hope my dad doesn’t see me. God, make him go on sleeping, while I take one or two bills. There’s his stash of money… Man, there is so much money here… No, I must put it back. Stealing is forbidden.
Satan: No, no… What are you doing, Assud? No, Assud, I promised you that nobody would see you or know about this. Take one or two bills. Don’t be afraid, Assud.
Assud: Okay, I’ll just take one… Actually, I’ll take two.
Satan: No, take three. …
Voice of girl: Assud, you were wrong to follow Satan, who is the source of all problems. In addition, you caused problems between your parents. You have no right to cause such a great problem. Don’t you know that stealing leads to Hell. The Prophet Muhammad said: “If my daughter Fatima had stolen, I would have chopped off her hand.” If you were in Saudi Arabia now, they would chop off your hand. Allah said in the Koran: “As for a thief, male or female, cut off their hands: A punishment by example, for their crime.” …
Child TV host Saraa: What do you think about what Assud did?
Asmaa: It was wrong, because “as for a thief, male or female, cut of their hands.”
Assud: Oh my God! You say that my hand should be chopped off, Asmaa?
Asmaa: Yes.
Assud: You think my hand should be chopped off?
Asmaa: What?
Assud: You want my hand to be chopped off?
Asmaa: Yes. …
Nur: The Prophet Muhammad said: “If my daughter Fatima had stolen, I would have chopped off her hand.
Assud: So if Saraa were to steal, her hand should be chopped off, right?
Nur: No.
Assud: When you were little, didn’t you ever steal a shekel or something?
Nur: No, because Allah is watching me.
Saraa: Nur, do you think we should go ahead and chop off Assud’s hand now?
Assud: No, no. Saraa, I’m begging you…
Nur: Saraa, he has repented and promised never to do it again, then that’s it.
Saraa: Well, if we don’t chop off his hand, maybe we should chop off his ear?
Assud: No, please, no, I’m begging you…

One of the great mysteries has been why one of the most technically advanced countries persists in using the slower and more primitive forms of heating water rather than as does the rest of the civilized world, using electric kettles. The secret lore of utilizing the latter --- fill with water and hit the switch --- cannot be beyond them, and the benefits are manifest. The most plausible reason is that they use the weaker, but safer, electric current; but that's not the whole story.

I came across a hostel site from Nova Scotia --- whose inhabitants understand the theory, but whose cousins from the south get easily frustrated with life's little problems --- which gave the real clue why America abjures these godless devices:

Ridiculous Rules : Welcome to our list of rules we (mistakenly) assumed were totally unnecessary to state.

1/
Please don't put our electric (plastic) kettle on a burner and attempt to heat the water that way. It is, by definition, electric and therefore plugs into the wall and does not require additional heating on an element. In fact, to do so will cause a fire.

***

From another site is a small discussion here.

My electric kettle is my best friend - I use it many times daily (esp. when I'm not at work). So this Canadian finds it as useful as the Brits. I even grew up with electric kettles, though my mother did have a stovetop one for awhile. I used to hate how long it took for the water to heat though.

...

In Europe, electricity has become the norm for powering all sorts of things. Watches, clocks, toothbrushes, even lighting our homes.

it heats the water same as a stove-top kettle only there's an electric element on the inside doing the hard work. Once it boils it switches off automatically and you pour on tea or coffee so no major problem with losing "dissolved gases".

I can't believe I'm explaining how an electric kettle works.

...

Next up: The 'Automobile'. They're not so popular in Brooklyn, but are apparently set to revolutionise personal transport the same way the Segway did all those years ago.

...

My kettle has an element suspended about 1/2" from the bottom, so water is on all sides of it. Heats nice and fast, too, despite running on our weaksauce American 120 volts.

...

As for electric kettles being no more efficient than stovetop ones in the US, because of lower voltage: rubbish. We have a Russell Hobbs that heats water to boiling many times faster than a stovetop kettle, nearly as fast as a UK kettle. And unlike the stove, almost all of the energy goes into heating the water and not the air above the stove. Using a stove to boil a kettle is wasteful and ecologically unsound.

...

Following your thread with interest. My husband and I recently travelled to USA to "do" Route 66. We are Ausralians, and my husband HAS to have a cup of tea - he rarely drinks coffee. All the motels we stayed at had coffee drip/percolator things, but the water didn't get hot enough for tea (needs to be boiling). He went to Walmart and asked about buying one - they had no idea what he wss talking about. We looked at different shops - no luck. Here, we consider an electric kettle the most important appliance in the kitchen - prior to this we had electric jugs with internal elements (not very safe) - we never used a kettle on the stove as we reckoned it used too much electricity, and as for using the microwave for heating water, it never gets hot enough for tea.

***

Personally, I rather fancy a Bodum Ottoni as having the right Gormengastian correctness, available either for electric, or for stovetop for confused Yanks. However, the official price of $240 is a little rich. My present piece of plastic cost around $5. Plus it was made by Chinese slaves...

“I’d put Stalin on the OSS payroll if I thought it would help us defeat Hitler.”

One rarely thinks of Republican Senators as capable of killing humour, particularly in the '40s when one imagines half as dusty old men long on the payroll of the Steel Trusts, and half as plegmatic time-servers as solemn as a church bell ringing for a funeral. The odd swashbucker willing to make waves like McCarthy or Nixon was a rara avis.

However, from a review by the admirable anti-war campaigner, Justin Raimundo --- who still keeps the faith against Mr. Obama's War, whence all but he had fled, Democratic Bushie-haters swiftly realised which side of their bread is buttered under the new dispensation --- of 'Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America', a Senator Mundt made an astoundingly funny joke on the death of a rascal.

Shortly after Lawrence Duggan, a top State Department official, was questioned by the FBI about his involvement in espionage against the U.S. on behalf of the Soviet Union, he jumped from the 16th floor of a New York City office building. The winter of 1948 was a particularly harsh one, as the first frigid blasts of the Cold War whipped across the political landscape, but not as harsh as the response of Sen. Karl Mundt. Asked if, in light of Duggan’s suicide, when the House Committee on Un-American Activities would name other suspected Soviet agents, the senator replied, “We’ll name them as they jump out of windows.”

The storm of self-righteousness that broke over the waspish Mundt’s head put the Furies to shame. With one voice, the liberal establishment—Eleanor Roosevelt; former undersecretary of state, Sumner Welles; Archibald MacLeish, poet-laureate of the New Deal; and liberal attack-dogs Drew Pearson and Edward R. Murrow—rose up and barked: Libel! Slander! Red-baiting!

As John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr point out in Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America, no less a liberal icon than Arthur Schlesinger Jr. denounced a book for characterizing Duggan as a KGB source, accusing the author of “blackening the name of a man whom many knew as an able public servant.”

But the collapse of the Soviet empire has meant the implosion of the liberal delusion that McCarthyism was a mean-spirited campaign of lies and smears based entirely on the ambition and alcohol-fueled paranoia of one flawed human being, whose name has become synonymous with witch-hunting. Schlesinger and his ideological confrères have had the rug pulled out from under them by the gradual release of the KGB’s files, and the coup de grâce has been delivered by the publication of Spies, which cites definitive evidence from the Soviet archives that not only nails Duggan as a Soviet agent, but also closes the case of the most celebrated Soviet fifth columnist of all, Alger Hiss.

...

How little things change. This is precisely what Larry Franklin, the Pentagon’s top Iran analyst, said in his own defense when he was caught turning over vital secrets to Israeli officials via AIPAC employees Steve Rosen and Keith Weissman. Far from considering himself a traitor, he fancied himself a patriot for trying to advance the special relationship between the two countries. Convinced that American policymakers weren’t responding to the alleged threat from Iran decisively enough, he took it upon himself to supply the Israelis with closely held intelligence about al-Qaeda and U.S. troop movements in Iraq because he considered American and Israeli interests to be the same.

This also describes the mindset of Rosen and Weissman, who had the charges against them dropped after years of legal delaying tactics and an orchestrated campaign by the Israel lobby. Of course, the accusation of McCarthyism was pinned on the Justice Department for daring to indict them along with Franklin, and yet, as we can see in the pages of Spies, “Tail-Gunner Joe” was right. The U.S. government, during the war years particularly, was inundated with Communists who were turning over our secrets to the Soviets as fast as they could glean them.

Soviet penetration of every aspect of American political and social life was the KGB’s goal, and during what Eugene Lyons called the “red decade” of the 1930s, this was incredibly easy: the ideological zeitgeist was not only conducive but welcoming. The supposed identity of U.S. and Soviet interests was even easier to justify during the war years, when “Uncle Joe” Stalin was America’s best friend (and Britain’s), and Lend-Lease Act dollars were pouring into the effort to save the “workers’ fatherland.”

...

Journalism was a prime target. There were, of course, plenty of party-liners, but in Spies we are presented with evidence that a substantial Communist cadre in the Fourth Estate reported to their KGB handlers and, in certain cases, acted as sources and conduits for sensitive material.

George Seldes and Bruce Minton, co-publishers of the left-wing newsletter In Fact—who delighted in smearing antiwar conservatives—were both Soviet agents, the latter “deeply embedded in the Communist underground and one of its links to the KGB.” Another journalist crusader was John Spivak, who made a career out of linking America First to the Nazis after receiving orders directly from the KGB’s chief officer in the U.S., Jacob Golos. After the invasion of the Soviet Union by Hitler’s troops, hacks like Seldes and Spivak, along with John Roy Carlson, were used to smear the antiwar movement as the “Nazi transmission belt,” as one anti-isolationist tract put it.

The case of Walter Lippmann, the socialist turned consummate insider, is more complex: the KGB approached him through his secretary, Mary Price, who went through his papers and sent photocopies of his correspondence to her KGB handler. Ernest Hemingway is characterized by the authors as the “dilettante spy,” whose contacts with Soviet agent Harry Dexter White and other brushes with the Communist apparatus in the U.S. and abroad—he went to Spain during the civil war and was close to the International Brigades—made the Soviets think he could be useful. Yet Hemingway, although vaguely sympathetic and apparently enamoured of the whole idea of espionage, never did anything for the KGB, and his contacts with them were sporadic.

The Soviets also penetrated the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the precursor to the CIA, to an “astounding degree,” with several top agents reporting directly to Moscow. Newly documented cases of KGB collaboration number about a dozen. Grouped around these conscious agents were the sources who, unknowingly or otherwise, fed them vital information that was then piped to Moscow. Strongholds were apparently the Russian, Spanish, Balkan, Hungarian, and Latin American sections of the Research and Analysis department. In terms of operational units, the Reds were also a significant factor in the Japanese, Spanish, Hungarian, Korean, Italian, Indonesian, and German sections. Thrown together haphazardly and with great speed during the war, the OSS was particularly prone to Soviet infiltration. Its first chief, William Donovan, once remarked, “I’d put Stalin on the OSS payroll if I thought it would help us defeat Hitler.” Donovan felt he was making use of the Communists in his ranks, but in the long run they made better use of him.

The Soviets further succeeded in placing a number of agents as congressional staff members, and in Rep. Sam Dickstein (D-N.Y.), who according to Allen Weinstein’s The Haunted Wood was paid $1,250 a month by the Soviets, they had an actual member of Congress. It was Dickstein who lorded it over the House’s Special Committee on Un-American Activities, the precursor to HUAC, and embarked on a witchhunt against any organization or individual who dared speak out against U.S. intervention abroad, labeling them Nazis, fascists, and saboteurs. Long before McCarthy, there was Dickstein, who “exaggerated the extremist threat far beyond its small size, claiming that the German American Bund had two hundred thousand armed men who were ready to don their brown uniforms and overthrow the government.” He coerced and abused witnesses dragged before his inquisition and “lectured them about their moral shortcomings.”

...

Yet she fails to understand the real history and nature of McCarthyism, which pointed to an internal enemy, rather than the alleged external military threat from the Soviet Union, as the main danger to America. This is why liberal anti-Communists, and the intellectual predecessors of today’s neoconservatives, recoiled at the sight of the populist McCarthy rallying millions of Americans against their own government and the elites who controlled it. This is why the postwar remnants of the old “isolationist” America First movement were such ardent McCarthyites—aside from the sheer joy of getting back at the leftists, like Dickstein, who had conducted an anti-rightist inquisition during the war years.

If the main danger was at home, then we need not go abroad in search of monsters to destroy. Such an ardent McCarthyite and Taft Republican as the novelist Louis Bromfield, in his forgotten classic A New Pattern for a Tired World (1954), referred to the Soviets’ “ramshackle empire,” and characterized the Marxist movement as an “international psychopathic cult,” which could not long survive without infusions of technology and aid from the West. The alleged “threat” posed by the Soviet Union was minor, he declared, compared to the threat to our old Republic represented by militarism, the arms race, and the distortion of our economic and political life by the rise of an American empire.

At the end of that road lies Washington, D.C., the Imperial City, a battlefield where foreign factions vie for influence and intelligence agencies, friend and foe alike, trawl for secrets. As we saw in the case of the AIPAC espionage scandal—and its outcome, the dismissal of all charges—the line between lobbying and espionage is now so blurred that it no longer seems to exist. And so, even as we absorb the lessons of this chronicle of treason, a new chapter in the history of ideologically motivated espionage is being written.

A further thought, is like other unpleasant scoundrels in the 40s from Jan Masaryk to Abe Reles, Duggan did not go quietly into that goodnight, but was assisted. Neither criminal gang was forbearing when to came to disposing of inconvenient comrades.

For some reason --- let's call it hypocrisy --- Congressman Dickstein investigating dissidents and, still viler, moralizing at them in the proper whine of democracy is venial, whereas old Joe McCarthy was an utter swine when the boot was on the other foot and it was leftists being exposed...

Yet even his battle for truth, and nothing but the truth, pales compared to the pure insouciance of Mundt's splendid jest. Such is the power of art over labour.

Hai Rama ! Hai Rama ! ( While I Am Waiting Around For Them To Fall, They Might Do Something Mean To Me )

A ripping review of a sentimental bio-pic I never saw and never shall see... Nonetheless, deluded by the illusion of concepts people have and will continue to revere the engaging little fraud.

The Gandhi Nobody Knows

Richard Grenier

[From the magazine, "Commentary," March 1983, published monthly by the American Jewish Committee, New York, NY.]

Some very limited quotes:

I cannot honestly say I had any reasonable expectation that the film would show
scenes of Gandhi's pretty teenage girl followers fighting "hysterically" (the
word was used) for the honor of sleeping naked with the Mahatma and cuddling the
nude septuagenarian in their arms. (Gandhi was "testing" his vow of chastity in
order to gain moral strength for his mighty struggle with Jinnah.) When told
there was a man named Freud who said that, despite his declared intention,
Gandhi might actually be *enjoying* the caresses of the naked girls, Gandhi
continued, unperturbed. Nor, frankly, did I expect to see Gandhi giving daily
enemas to all the young girls in his ashrams (his daily greeting was, "Have you
had a good bowel movement this morning, sisters?"), nor see the girls giving him
*his* daily enema. Although Gandhi seems to have written less about home rule
for India than he did about enemas, and excrement, and latrine cleaning ("The
bathroom is a temple. It should be so clean and inviting that anyone would enjoy
eating there"), I confess such scenes might pose problems for a Western
director.

'Gandhi,' therefore, the film, this paid political advertisement for the
government of India, is organized around three axes: (1) Anti-racism--all men
are equal regardless of race, color, creed, etc.; (2) anti-colonialism, which in
present terms translates as support for the Third World, including, most
eminently, India; (3) nonviolence, presented as an absolutist pacifism. There
are other, secondary precepts and subheadings. Gandhi is portrayed as the
quintessence of tolerance ("I am a Hindu and a Muslim and a Christian and a
Jew"), of basic friendliness to Britain ("The British have been with us for a
long time and when they leave we want them to leave as friends"), of devotion to
his wife and family. His vow of chastity is represented as something selfless
and holy, rather like the celibacy of the Catholic clergy. But, above all,
Gandhi's life and teachings are presented as having great import for us today.
We must learn from Gandhi.

I propose to demonstrate that the film grotesquely distorts both Gandhi's life
and character to the point that it is nothing more than a pious fraud, and a
fraud of the most egregious kind. Hackneyed Indian falsehoods such as that "the
British keep trying to break India up" (as if Britain didn't give India a unity
it had never enjoyed in history), or that the British *created* Indian poverty
(a poverty which had not only existed since time immemorial but had been
considered holy), almost pass unnoticed in the tide of adulation for our
fictional saint. Gandhi, admittedly, being a devout Hindu, was far more
self-contradictory than most public men. Sanskrit scholars tell me that flat
self-contradiction is even considered an element of "Sanskrit rhetoric." Perhaps
it is thought to show profundity.

GANDHI rose early, usually at three-thirty, and before his first bowel movement
(during which he received visitors, although possibly not Margaret Bourke-White)
he spent two hours in meditation, listening to his "inner voice." Now Gandhi was
an extremely vocal individual, and in addition to spending an hour each day in
vigorous walking, another hour spinning at his primitive spinning wheel, another
hour at further prayers, another hour being massaged nude by teenage girls, and
many hours deciding such things as affairs of state, he produced a quite
unconscionable number of articles and speeches and wrote an average of sixty
letters a day. All considered, it is not really surprising that his inner voice
said different things to him at different times. Despising consistency and never
checking his earlier statements, and yet inhumanly obstinate about his position
at any given moment, Gandhi is thought by some Indians today (according to V.S.
Naipaul) to have been so erratic and unpredictable that he may have delayed
Indian independence for twenty-five years.

For Gandhi was an extremely difficult man to work with. He had no partners, only
disciples. For members of his ashrams, he dictated every minute of their days,
and not only every morsel of food they should eat but when they should eat it.
Without ever having heard of a protein or a vitamin, he considered himself an
expert on diet, as on most things, and was constantly experimenting. Once when
he fell ill, he was found to have been living on a diet of ground-nut butter and
lemon juice; British doctors called it malnutrition. And Gandhi had even greater
confidence in his abilities as a "nature doctor," prescribing obligatory cures
for his ashramites, such as dried cow-dung powder and various concoctions
containing cow dung (the cow, of course, being sacred to the Hindu). And to
those he really loved he gave enemas--but again, alas, not to Margaret
Bourke-White. Which is too bad, really. For admiring Candice Bergen's work as I
do, I would have been most interested in seeing how she would have experienced
this beatitude. The scene might have lived in film history.

...

Now the time is 1893, and Gandhi is a "caste" Hindu, and from one of the higher
castes. Although, later, he was to call for improving the lot of India's
Untouchables, he was not to have any serious misgivings about the fundamentals
of the caste system for about another thirty years, and even then his doubts, to
my way of thinking, were rather minor. In the India in which Gandhi grew up, and
had only recently left, some castes could enter the courtyards of certain Hindu
temples, while others could not. Some castes were forbidden to use the village
well. Others were compelled to live outside the village, still others to leave
the road at the approach of a person of higher caste and perpetually to call
out, giving warning, so that no one would be polluted by their proximity. The
endless intricacies of Hindu caste by-laws varied somewhat region by region, but
in Madras, where most South African Indians were from, while a Nayar could
pollute a man of higher caste only by touching him, Kammalans polluted at a
distance of 24 feet, toddy drawers at 36 feet, Pulayans and Cherumans at 48
feet, and beef-eating Paraiyans at 64 feet. All castes and the thousands of
sub-castes were forbidden, needless to say, to marry, eat, or engage in social
activity with any but members of their own group. In Gandhi's native Gujarat a
caste Hindu who had been polluted by touch had to perform extensive ritual
ablutions or purify himself by drinking a holy beverage composed of milk, whey,
and (what else?) cow dung.

Low-caste Hindus, in short, suffered humiliations in their native India compared
to which the carrying of identity cards in South Africa was almost trivial In
fact, Gandhi, to his credit, was to campaign strenuously in his later life for
the reduction of caste barriers in India--a campaign almost invisible in the
movie, of course, conveyed in only two glancing references, leaving the audience
with the officially sponsored if historically astonishing notion that racism was
introduced into India by the British. To present the Gandhi of 1893, a
conventional caste Hindu, fresh from caste-ridden India where a Paraiyan could
pollute at 64 feet, as the champion of interracial equalitarianism is one of the
most brazen hypocrisies I have ever encountered in a serious movie.

The film, moreover, does not give the slightest hint as to Gandhi's attitude
toward blacks, and the viewers of 'Gandhi' would naturally suppose that, since
the future Great Soul opposed South African discrimination against Indians, he
would also oppose South African discrimination against black people. But this is
not so. While Gandhi, in South Africa, fought furiously to have Indians
recognized as loyal subjects of the British empire, and to have them enjoy the
full rights of Englishmen, he had no concern for blacks whatever. In fact,
during one of the "Kaffir Wars" he volunteered to organize a brigade of Indians
to put down a Zulu rising, and was decorated himself for valor under fire.

...

Gandhi, in short, was a leader looking for a cause. He found it, of course, in
home rule for India and, ultimately, in independence.

WE ARE therefore presented with the seeming anomaly of a Gandhi who, in Britain
when war broke out in August 1914, instantly contacted the War Office, swore
that he would stand by England in its hour of need, and created the Indian
Volunteer Corps, which he might have commanded if he hadn't fallen ill with
pleurisy. In 1915, back in India, he made a memorable speech in Madras in which
he proclaimed, "I discovered that the British empire had certain ideals with
which I have fallen in love...." In early 1918, as the war in Europe entered its
final crisis, he wrote to the Viceroy of India, "I have an idea that if I become
your recruiting agent-in-chief, I might rain men upon you," and he proclaimed in
a speech in Kheda that the British "love justice; they have shielded men against
oppression." Again, he wrote to the Viceroy, "I would make India offer all her
able-bodied sons as a sacrifice to the empire at this critical moment To some of
his pacifist friends, who were horrified, Gandhi replied by appealing to the
'Bhagavad Gita' and to the endless wars recounted in the Hindu epics, the
'Ramayana' and the 'Mahabharata,' adding further to the pacifists' honor by
declaring that Indians "have always been warlike, and the finest hymn composed
by Tulsidas in praise of Rama gives the first place to his ability to strike
down the enemy."

This was in contradiction to the interpretation of sacred Hindu scriptures
Gandhi had offered on earlier occasions (and would offer later), which was that
they did not recount military struggles but spiritual struggles; but, unusual
for him, he strove to find some kind of synthesis. "I do not say, `Let us go and
kill the Germans,'" Gandhi explained. "I say, `Let us go and die for the sake of
India and the empire.'" And yet within two years, the time having come for
swaraj (home rule), Gandhi's inner voice spoke again, and, the leader having
found his cause, Gandhi proclaimed resoundingly: "The British empire today
represents Satanism, and they who love God can afford to have no love for
Satan."

...

Nonviolence: but the real center and raison d'etre of 'Gandhi' is ahimsa,
nonviolence, which principle when incorporated into vast campaigns of
noncooperation with British rule the Mahatma called by an odd name he made up
himself, satyagraha, which means something like "truth-striving." During the key
part of his life, Gandhi devoted a great deal of time explaining the moral and
philosophical meanings of both ahimsa and satyagraha. But much as the film
sanitizes Gandhi to the point where one would mistake him for a Christian saint,
and sanitizes India to the point where one would take it for Shangri-la, it
quite sweeps away Gandhi's ethical and religious ponderings, his complexities,
his qualifications, and certainly his vacillations, which simplifying process
leaves us with our old European friend: pacifism. It is true that Gandhi was
much impressed by the Sermon on the Mount, his favorite passage in the Bible,
which he read over and over again. But for all the Sermon's inspirational value,
and its service as an ideal in relations among individual human beings, no
Christian state which survived has ever based its policies on the Sermon on the
Mount since Constantine declared Christianity the official religion of the Roman
empire. And no modern Western state which survives can ever base its policies on
pacifism. And no Hindu state will ever base its policies on ahimsa. Gandhi
himself--although the film dishonestly conceals this from us--many times
conceded that in dire circumstances "war may have to be resorted to as a
necessary evil."

It is something of an anomaly that Gandhi, held in popular myth to be a pure
pacifist (a myth which governments of India have always been at great pains to
sustain in the belief that it will reflect credit on India itself, and to which
the present movie adheres slavishly), was until fifty not ill-disposed to war at
all. As I have already noted, in three wars, no sooner had the bugles sounded
than Gandhi not only gave his support, but was clamoring for arms. To form new
regiments! To fight! To destroy the enemies of the empire! Regular Indian army
units fought in both the Boer War and World War I, but this was not enough for
Gandhi. He wanted to raise new troops, even, in the case of the Boer and Kaffir
Wars, from the tiny Indian colony in South Africa. British military authorities
thought it not really worth the trouble to train such a small body of Indians as
soldiers, and were even resistant to training them as an auxiliary medical corps
("stretcher bearers"), but finally yielded to Gandhi's relentless importuning.
As first instructed, the Indian Volunteer Corps was not supposed actually to go
into combat, but Gandhi, adamant, led his Indian volunteers into the thick of
battle. When the British commanding officer was mortally wounded during an
engagement in the Kaffir War, Gandhi--though his corps' deputy
commander--carried the officer's stretcher himself from the battlefield and for
miles over the sun-baked veldt. The British empire's War Medal did not have its
name for nothing, and it was generally earned.

...

As soon as the oppressive British were gone, however, the Indians--gentle,
tolerant people that they are gave themselves over to an orgy of bloodletting.
Trained troops did not pick off targets at a distance with Enfield rifles.
Blood-crazed Hindus, or Muslims, ran through the streets with knives, beheading
babies, stabbing women, old people. Interestingly, our movie shows none of this
on camera (the oldest way of stacking the deck in Hollywood). All we see is the
aged Gandhi, grieving, and of course fasting, at these terrible reports of
riots. And, naturally, the film doesn't whisper a clue as to the total number of
dead, which might spoil the mood somehow. The fact is that we will never know
how many Indians were murdered by other Indians during the country's
Independence Massacres, but almost all serious studies place the figure over a
million, and some, such as Payne's sources, go to 4 million. So, for those who
like round numbers, the British killed some 400 seditious colonials at Amritsar
and the name Amritsar lives in infamy, while Indians may have killed some *4
million* of their own countrymen for no other reason than that they were of a
different religious faith and people think their great leader would make an
inspirational subject for a movie. Ahimsa, as can be seen, then, had an
absolutely tremendous moral effect when used against Britain, but not only would
it not have worked against Nazi Germany (the most obvious reproach, and of
course quite true), but, the crowning irony, it had virtually no effect whatever
when Gandhi tried to bring it into play against violent Indians.

...

NOW, as it happens, I have been thinking about tyrants and murderers for some
time. But the fact that in the end they always fall has never given me much
comfort, partly because, not being a Hindu and not expecting reincarnation after
reincarnation, I am simply not prepared to wait them out. It always occurs to me
that, while I am waiting around for them to fall, they might do something mean
to me, like fling me into a gas oven or send me off to a Gulag. Unlike a Hindu
and not worshipping stasis, I am also given to wondering who is to bring these
murderers and tyrants down, it being all too risky a process to wait for them
and the regimes they establish simply to die of old age. The fact that a few
reincarnations >from now they will all have turned to dust somehow does not seem
to suggest a rational strategy for dealing with the problem.

Since the movie's Madeleine Slade specifically invites us to revere the "way out
of madness" that Gandhi offered the world at the time of World War II, I am
under the embarrassing obligation of recording exactly what courses of action
the Great Soul recommended to the various parties involved in that crisis. For
Gandhi was never stinting in his advice. Indeed, the less he knew about a
subject, the less he stinted.

I am aware that for many not privileged to have visited the former British Raj,
the names Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Deccan are simply words. But other names, such
as Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, somehow have a harder profile. The term
"Jew," also, has a reasonably hard profile, and I feel all Jews sitting
emotionally at the movie 'Gandhi' should be apprised of the advice that the
Mahatma offered their coreligionists when faced with the Nazi peril: they should
commit collective suicide. If only the Jews of Germany had the good sense to
offer their throats willingly to the Nazi butchers' knives and throw themselves
into the sea from cliffs they would arouse world public opinion, Gandhi was
convinced, and their moral triumph would be remembered for "ages to come." If
they would only pray for Hitler (as their throats were cut, presumably), they
would leave a "rich heritage to mankind." Although Gandhi had known Jews from
his earliest days in South Africa--where his three staunchest white supporters
were Jews, every one--he disapproved of how rarely they loved their enemies. And
he never repented of his recommendation of collective suicide. Even after the
war, when the full extent of the Holocaust was revealed, Gandhi told Louis
Fischer, one of his biographers, that the Jews died anyway, didn't they? They
might as well have died significantly.

...

I AM SURE that almost everyone who sees the movie 'Gandhi' is aware that, from a
religious point if view, the Mahatma was something called a "Hindu"--but I do
not think one in a thousand has the dimmest notion of the fundamental beliefs of
the Hindu religion. The simplest example is Gandhi's use of the word "God,"
which, for members of the great Western religions--Christianity, Judaism, and
Islam, all interrelated--means a personal god, a godhead. But when Gandhi said
"God" in speaking English, he was merely translating >from Gujarati or Hindi,
and from the Hindu culture. Gandhi, in fact, simply did not believe in a
personal God, and wrote in so many words, "God is not a person ... but a force;
the undefinable mysterious Power that pervades everything; a living Power that
is Love...." And Gandhi's very favorite definition of God, repeated many
thousands of times, was, "God is Truth," which reduces God to some kind of
abstract principle.

Like all Hindus, Gandhi also believed in the "Great Oneness," according to
which everything is part of God, meaning not just you and me and everyone else,
but every living creature, every dead creature, every plant, the pitcher of
milk, the milk in the pitcher, the tumbler into which the milk is poured....
After all of which, he could suddenly pop up with a declaration that God is "the
Maker, the Law-Giver, a jealous Lord," phrases he had probably picked up in the
Bible and, with Hindu fluidity, felt he could throw in so as to embrace even
more of the Great Oneness. So when Gandhi said, "I am a Hindu and a Muslim and a
Christian and a Jew," it was (from a Western standpoint) Hindu double-talk.
Hindu holy men, some of them reformers like Gandhi, have actually even
"converted" to Islam, then Christianity, or whatever, to worship different
"aspects" of the Great Oneness, before reconverting to Hinduism. Now for
Christians, fastidious in matters of doctrine, a man who converts to Islam is an
apostate (or vice versa), but a Hindu is a Hindu is a Hindu. The better to
experience the Great Oneness, many Hindu holy men feel they should be women as
well as men, and one quite famous one even claimed he could menstruate (I will
spare the reader the details).

IN THIS ecumenical age, it is extremely hard to shake Westerners loose from the
notion that the devout of all religions, after all, worship "the one God." But
Gandhi did not worship the one God. He did not worship the God of mercy. He did
not worship the God of forgiveness. And this for the simple reason that the
concepts of mercy and forgiveness are absent from Hinduism. In Hinduism, men do
not pray to God for forgiveness, and a man's sins are never forgiven--indeed,
there is no one out there to do the forgiving. In your next life you may be born
someone higher up the caste scale, but in this life there is no hope. For
Gandhi, a true Hindu, did not believe in man's immortal soul. He believed with
every ounce of his being in karma, a series, perhaps a long series, of
reincarnations, and at the end, with great good fortune: mukti, liberation from
suffering and the necessity of rebirth, nothingness. Gandhi once wrote to
Tolstoy (of all people) that reincarnation explained "reasonably the many
mysteries of life." So if Hindus today still treat an Untouchable as barely
human, this is thought to be perfectly right and fitting because of his actions
in earlier lives. As can be seen, Hinduism, by its very theology, with its
sacred triad of karma, reincarnation, and caste (with caste an absolutely
indispensable part of the system) offers the most complacent justification of
inhumanity of any of the world's great religious faiths.

...

IT SHOULD be plain by now that here is much in the Hindu culture that is
distasteful to the Western mind, and consequently is largely--unknown in the
West--not because Hindus do not go on and on about these subjects, but because a
Western squeamishness usually prevents these preoccupations from reaching print
(not to mention film). When Gandhi attended his first Indian National Congress
he was most distressed at seeing the Hindus--not laborers but high-caste Hindus,
civic leaders--defecating all over the place, as if to pay attention to where
the feces fell was somehow unclean. (For, as V.S. Naipaul puts it, in a twisted
Hindu way it is *unclean to clean*. It is unclean even to notice. "It was the
business of the sweepers to remove excrement, and until the sweepers came,
people were content to live in the midst of their own excrement.") Gandhi
exhorted Indians endlessly on the subject, saying that sanitation was the first
need of India, but he retained an obvious obsession with excreta, gleefully
designing latrines and latrine drills for all hands at the ashram, and, all in
all what with giving and taking enemas, and his public bowel movements, and his
deep concern with everyone else's bowel movements (much correspondence), and
endless dietary experiments *as a function* of bowel movements, he devoted a
rather large share of his life to the matter. Despite his constant campaigning
for sanitation, it is hard to believe that Gandhi was not permanently marked by
what Arthur Koestler terms the Hindu "morbid infatuation with filth," and what
V.S. Naipaul goes as far as to call Indian "deification of filth." (Decades
later, Krishna Menon, a Gandhian and one-time Indian Defence Minister, was still
fortifying sanctity by drinking a daily 1 of urine.)

...

Gandhi was a truly fanatical opponent of sex for pleasure, and worked it out
carefully that a married couple should be allowed to have sex three or four
times *in a lifetime*, merely to have children and favored embodying this
restriction in the law of the land. The sexual-gratification wing of the
present-day feminist movement would find little to attract them in Gandhi's
doctrine, since in all his seventy-nine years it never crossed his mind once
that there could be anything enjoyable in sex for women, and he was constantly
enjoining Indian women to deny themselves to men, to refuse to let their
husbands "abuse" them. Gandhi had been married at thirteen, and when he took his
vow of chastity, after twenty-four years of sexual activity, he ordered his two
oldest sons, both young men, to be totally chaste as well.

BUT Gandhi's monstrous behavior to his own family is notorious. He denied his
sons education--to which he was bitterly hostile. His wife remained illiterate.
Once when she was very sick, hemorrhaging badly, and seemed to be dying, he
wrote to her from jail icily: "My struggle is not merely political. It is
religious and therefore quite pure. It does not matter much whether one dies in
it or lives. I hope and expect that you will also think likewise and not be
unhappy." To die, that is. On another occasion he wrote, speaking about her: "I
simply cannot bear to look at Ba's face. The expression is often like that on
the face of a meek cow and gives one the feeling, as a cow occasionally does,
that in her own dumb manner she is saying something. I see, too, that there is
selfishness in this suffering of hers ...." And in the end he let her die, as I
have said, rather than allow British doctors to give her a shot of penicillin
(while his inner voice told him that it would be all right for him to take
quinine). He disowned his oldest son, Harilal, for wishing to marry. He banished
his second son for giving his struggling older brother a small sum of money.
Harilal grew quite wild with rage against his father, attacked him in print,
converted to Islam, took to women, drink, and died an alcoholic in 1948. The
Mahatma attacked him right back in his pious way, proclaiming modestly in an
open letter in "Young India," "Men may be good, not necessarily their children."

...

SOME Indians feel that after the early l930's, Gandhi, although by now
world-famous, was in fact in sharp decline. Did he at least "get British out of
India"? Some say no. India, in the last days of British Raj, was already largely
governed by Indians (a fact one would never suspect from this movie), and it is
a common view that without this irrational, wildly erratic holy man the
transition to full independence might have gone both more smoothly and more
swiftly. There is much evidence that in his last years Gandhi was in a kind of
spiritual retreat and, with all his endless praying and fasting, was no longer
pursuing (the very words seem strange in a Hindu context) "the public good."
What he was pursuing, in a strict reversion to Hindu tradition, was his personal
holiness. In earlier days he had scoffed at the title accorded him, Mahatma
(literally "great soul"). But toward the end, during the hideous paroxysms that
accompanied independence, with some of the most unspeakable massacres taking
place in Calcutta, he declared, "And if the whole of Calcutta swims in blood, it
will not dismay me. For it will be a willing offering of innocent blood." And in
his last days, after there had already been one attempt on his life, he was
heard to say, "*I am a true Mahatma.*"

...

I should not be surprised if Gandhi's greatest real humanitarian achievement was
an improvement in the treatment of Untouchables--an area where his efforts were
not only assiduous, but actually bore fruit. In this, of course, he ranks well
behind the British, who abolished suttee over ferocious Hindu opposition--in
1829. The ritual immolation by fire of widows on their husbands' funeral pyres,
suttee had the full sanction of the Hindu religion, although it might perhaps be
wrong to overrate its importance. Scholars remind us that it was never
universal, only "usual." And there was, after all, a rather extensive range of
choice. In southern India the widow was flung into her husband's fire-pit. In
the valley of the Ganges she was placed on the pyre when it was already aflame.
In western India, she supported the head of the corpse with her right hand,
while, torch in her left, she was allowed the honor of setting the whole thing
on fire herself. In the north, where perhaps women were more impious, the
widow's body was constrained on the burning pyre by long poles pressed down by
her relatives, just in case, screaming in terror and choking and burning to
death, she might forget her dharma. So, yes, ladies, members of the National
Council of Churches, believers in the one God, mourners for that holy India
before it was despoiled by those brutish British, remember suttee, that
interesting, exotic practice in which Hindus, over the centuries, burned to
death countless millions of helpless women in a spirit of pious devotion, crying
for all I know, Hai Rama! Hai Rama!

Some short while back, after yet another African statesman was suspected of enjoying strange fruit by his enemies, some mordant soul enquired when was the last time a European leader could be plausibly even accused of cannibalism... Fact is, like the past, they do things differently in other cultures --- and never shall the twain meet no matter how shining-eyed one-worlders hope we're all the same at heart.

On the other hand, we can all learn much from other cultures: if recent presidents and prime ministers had --- and did presently --- greet visitors with mutual enemas, they too might be revered as Great Souls.

I am a true Mahatma

Remembering the Civil War

[ or, The Quiet, Inward, Lifelong Price... ]

From Richard Earley's Remembering American Wars --- 'Politically Correct' Myths of Military service.

The seminal event in American history has been the Civil War. Anglo-American poet T. S. Eliot said the real revolution in the United States was not what the history books referred to as the Revolutionary War, but a consequence of the Civil War after which arose a plutocratic elite.

Three tribes that greatly determine present-day popular American culture, Ivy League WASP's, American blacks and Jews, evaded military service in that most crucial of American wars and have created a corrosive chimera to conceal their deceits and cowardice. As a nation, we have come to believe the necessary lies of the present-day ruling class and cultural standard bearers.

The archetype of the American tycoon of the latter part of the 19th and early 20th century was John Pierpont Morgan. As recently as 1989 a reader wrote a letter to American Heritage magazine asking where the great Morgan was during the years of the Civil War and if Morgan hired a substitute to go to war in his place. Then the curious correspondent surmised that the then popular cliché of the Civil War as "a rich man's war and a poor man's fight" was quite true. The answer from this magazine that presents itself as concerned for the serious amateur was that they believed Morgan hired a substitute rather than serve in the army. Elaborating on the apologia, the magazine reminded readers there was just too much money to be made on Wall Street for poor Morgan to think of anything else, and in an appeal to the patriotic ideals lurking within every American, the magazine reminded the inquiring reader of the preservation of the Union, "the last, best hope on earth", and the abolition of the abomination of slavery.

As for the rich who stayed home to make money, American Heritage wondered if forever more they did not hold their manhood cheap. With no obvious malice the reply finished, “Along with the money, I suspect Morgan and thousands of others paid a quiet, inward, lifelong price.” That the designated replier from American Heritage managed to change his answer ― from a tentative belief in Morgan's hiring of a substitute to an acknowledgment of his paying a stand-in ― within two paragraphs, illustrated how the power of money warps the integrity of language when an unpleasant fact has to be faced.

This bare minimal answer bordered on deliberate deceit and pandered to the present day power of the House of Morgan. Morgan's nefarious dealings during the Civil War have been a matter of general public record since 1908 when August Myer's The History of Great American Fortunes was published. Morgan knowingly profited enormously from the sale of defective rifles to the Union Army. This transaction in legalistic American terms was a deliberate piece of chicanery that only just stopped short of being illegal and may still bring admiring prose at both the Harvard legal and business schools. His contemporaries fighting and dying may only heighten the praise as proof of his foresight. The divinity school at Harvard might not find his behavior and moral code worthy of condemnation either.

After the battle of Gettysburg when Morgan was drafted, he did arrange to pay a substitute $300 so that he need not expose himself to danger. When done on such a large scale, these briberies contributed greatly to the draft riots of 1863 when the immigrant and other lower classes reacted violently against what they perceived as an unfair quota system. The draft riots disturbed the affluent. Forty years later a history of Columbia University described the draft riot as a "formidable uprising of the unpatriotic, ignorant and vicious classes in the city." The poet Ezra Pound was not impressed by Morgan's evasions, but thought they rather helped him become the great Mahatma of Wall Street where he was rather typical of the material by which economic and human history of the United States had been made.

An admiring biography of the Mellons, chronicling their rise to become America's richest family, made it quite clear as to what was uppermost in Judge Mellon's mind during the Civil War years. His son James had written the war was a source of great wealth to speculators who were continually getting richer and who did not care when war closed as the longer it lasted the better it would be for them. His elder son T.A. spoke ecstatically about the wealth to be made in tobacco speculations. In full recognition that his attitude was not the patriotic one, young T.A. let his actions be modeled after those in Lincoln's cabinet and thought "the more a person can get the better." The Judge was thrilled his boy was thinking the right way and sent him a letter of congratulations as the boy's views coincided with his own. The Judge added, "There is no doubt that in a general shipwreck the best way to save one's self is to keep afloat."

His son James weakened and asked permission to enlist, but the Judge's concept of patriotism did not require enlisting in any army. The Judge remembered, with approval, how his own Uncle Thomas had evaded the British draft in his escaping North Ireland by dressing as a woman. His biographer, vowed the Judge in his memoirs, wrote his matured and tempered view on the subject:
There may be occasions justifying war and making it the duty of every citizen to engage in it, but in the present state of civilization such occasions can seldom occur, and there is always a disproportionately large class of men fitted by nature for a service which requires so little brain work as that of the common soldier, and who are more valuable to their country and themselves as soldiers at such a time than in any other capacity. It is a mistake to suppose it the duty of every man to enlist when his country needs soldiers... If a man is wise, and can perform the duties of private life with credit to himself and improve his conditions at home, he will avoid the folly of soldiering.... a man whose life is of much value to himself, or his family should stay at home.
He added:
thousands of poor, worthless fellows fit for soldiering, but fit for nothing else, whose duty is to go. . . In time you will come to understand and believe that a man may be patriotic without risking his own life or sacrificing his health. There are plenty of other lives less valuable or others ready to serve for the love of serving.
Could the father of Dan Quayle have said it any better?

The patriarch of the Taft family of Ohio politics was writing friends that he was ready to throw Lincoln and his cabinet into the Potomac and cudgel his generals as cowards and traitors. He was beside himself for the failure of the administration to come to grips with the slavery issue. But Taft's mood changed swiftly after the Battle of Antietam when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, and he spoke with renewed enthusiasm for emancipation at patriotic rallies around Cincinnati. With two sons, one born in 1843 and one born in 1845, one might have had a small hope that these children would have been sufficiently motivated to enlist for the sake of their father's fervent beliefs. But they did not. The great battle of Chattanooga was raging in 1863 when the younger turned 18, but the younger had listened to his father's admonition: "there is no place like college to teach the value of each particular moment". He hustled off to Yale. What bullets crashing around his head, or smashing into his body could have taught the lad about appreciating other tranquil moments was not considered appropriate for the offspring of Taft, the patriarch, but he certainly was not shy in urging the children of others not so worthy to have the experience.

Hmmm I should like someone to write a book, "History of Greedy Man" and then present that book upon the altar of the Human Secularists that have such a high opinion of humanity and the current social structures that allow the greedy to prevail.

Ferdinand Lundberg almost achieved such a thing in the corpus of his admirable life's work. Otherwise, I was saving it for your Websites of Interest; but if you go to

http://yamaguchy.netfirms.com/

there are a number of works that bear infinite quotation that would tend to such a study...

Notably: Matthew Josephson, The Robber Barons
Those listed under Gustavus Myers
Richard Pettigrew, Triumphant Plutocracy

It's an odd site. No clear purpose except to present views on the money interest. There are anti-British, pro-British; anti-jewish, pro-jewish; anti-communist, pro-communist books and articles all presented without prejudice. Even has Nesta Webster's awesome 'The French Revolution' ( she was a nut outside that work ) and the elder Disraeli's excellent 'Charles I' upon the Great King.

Thanks - that does belong in the websites of interest - perhaps a thread entitled Claverhouse rules

BTw - would you happen to know of some eloquent piece written in the early 60s concerning the dire outcomes of the disposal of the "silver-backed' currency of the United States? I was only 7 years old at the time, but I remember reading something concerning the issue that still echoes of a prophetic voice...(?)

I'm afraid not --- I'm almost wholly economically illiterate ( and in private life also sadly ) with just enough sense to realise when somebody is essentially a pickpocket, whether his name be Bush or Obama or Morgan, so scarcely understand monetary policy. My sole justification* is that economists themselves never agree ( and definitely prolly never advocate anything that does not benefit themselves... ).

* Politically, I'm traditionalist; but economically and socially, fairly socialist.

This passage in an otherwise well done piece needs correcting:

Black soldiers during the Civil war numbered in the hundreds of thousands. 40,000 died (10k as a result of combat not unusual that most deaths related to disease. The Union suffered 110,100 killed due to battle and 224,580 died due to disease. The Confederates had similar statistics, 94k and 164k respectively). Their role was often limited by societal prejudices rather than willful evasion of military service. I do not know of Jewish enlisment rates as a percentage of the overall population. Anyone know by chance?

Fortunately not: I should hate to think of blacks dying en masse when either side's victory would bring them no better life.

If you follow the link, the learned author goes into each group's contributions:
but, he disgracefully fails to pay tribute to the jewish people's vital and intense support of the Confederacy. I doubt that it would have lasted two years without their generous aid, whether as soldiers, in finance, in statesmanship --- Judah Benjamin was the brains of the Confederacy --- as nurses, in slave-trading ( which, contrary to neoconfederate belief was a massive component of the South's economy ) and in fundraising abroad.

The historian from Princeton, Professor James McPherson, gave his and other generally accepted estimates of the Union dead, which would include both battlefield and non-combat related deaths at about 360,000. His estimate of blacks serving in Union forces was about 179,000 black soldiers and perhaps as many as 20,000 black sailors. What caused the greater dispute was the accounting of the dead. The number of war deaths for Union troops as given by Ebony approximated the accepted number, but the number of deaths under battlefield conditions for the blacks was totally out of line.

...

Most estimates for battlefield deaths for blacks hovered at about 3000, which would make the estimated total less than ten percent of Ebony's inflated guess. Professor McPherson wrote of six percent of white Union troops being killed in action while only 1.5 percent of black Union troops were killed under combat conditions. Fully 19% of black troops died from disease, which was a rate of almost twice that of white soldiers. Much of this large discrepancy has to be attributed to poor sanitation practices among blacks who did not receive the medical care that whites did. The historian of black issues, Herbert Aptheker, gave as his estimate of the black civil war dead as 2870 killed or mortally wounded while 29,756 died of disease. Mr. Aptheker, who had been a lifelong communist...

...

Blacks had a population of almost 900,000 men in the 15 to 40 years of age in 1860. Their combat dead of 3000 in that selected group gave a death rate of little over 3.3 per 1000. Northern whites had somewhere around 110,000 die under combat conditions. With their pool of almost 4,350,000 to draw on, northern whites died at a rate of slightly more than 25 per 1000.

However, the Encyclopedia Judaica, published in Jerusalem, gave a Jewish population of the United States in 1860 of about 150,000. A little further in their exposition on the glory of the accomplishments of Jews in the United States gave a total of 500 Jews who fell during the Civil War. These numbers were proudly recounted by The Jewish Veteran, the official newsletter of the Jewish War Veterans. A little computation arrived at the ratio of one Jew in every 300 dying during that war. This worked out to little more than three deaths per thousand Jews. This contribution to the Civil War death toll was of the order of one sixth or one seventh of the rest of the population after making allowances that restrictions were placed on service by blacks.

Here, as said, I believe both the author and the Encyclopedia Judaica to have completely ignored the jewish Confederate dead.

From a review of Robert N. Rosen's The Jewish Confederates

"In this fascinating book Robert N. Rosen illuminates a long-neglected dimension of Confederate history, and, in so doing, makes an important contribution to the debate over the depth of southern white unity and Confederate loyalty. Meticulously researched, The Jewish Confederates makes clear that across the social and economic spectrum Jewish southerners overwhelmingly supported the Confederacy. With fascinating detail about well-known and little-known men and women, Rosen demonstrates that on both the battlefield and the homefront Jewish Confederates proved their loyalty, a loyalty they maintained after 1865 in their embrace of the Lost Cause. All who want to understand the nineteenth-century South should read this book."

Personally, whilst respecting the fighters of both sides, I would not support either. Apart from political considerations, the North was tyrannically crushing a secession implicit in the founding; whilst the South, no matter what any revisionists maintain, was after all defending slavery...

Much Firmer Cost Estimates

From Military.com, whose server is overloaded, in case you can't view.

This article first appeared in AviationWeek.com.

The Australian government has decided to buy 14 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters now and not review its larger commitment for operational squadrons for another few years.
After weeks of discussions, Canberra says it will put A$3.2 billion ($3 billion) into the U.S.-based Lockheed Martin program to start receiving aircraft in 2014 for testing and training. The aircraft will operate in the U.S. The spending also will buy infrastructure and support.
In 2012, the government then plans to make a decision on whether to proceed with buying at least 72 F-35s to equip three Royal Australian Air Force operational squadron. Plans call for the first of those to become operational in 2018 and the third in 2021.
"By 2012, [the defense ministry] will have much firmer cost estimates for the remaining aircraft and necessary support and enabling capabilities as part of the planned first multiyear buy that is expected to comprise over 1,000 aircraft for the U.S., Australia and other partners. This will allow for much more effective planning of the final JSF acquisition in the context of the overall Defense Capability Plan," says the defense minister, Sen. John Faulkner.
Australia had indicated it would buy 100 F-35s. That’s still a possibility, although the decision will not be made until much later and depend on what will happen with the F/A-18F fleet.
The RAAF will field conventional-takeoff-and-landing versions of the multi-role fighter.
Australia signals its review in 2012 will also examine the industrial benefits that have flowed to its companies as part of the JSF program. In announcing the deal, it notes that 25 local firms have secured $200 million in business for JSF development and early production. How industry does in securing full-rate production work is the next issue. "It is important that where Australian companies offer value for money, Lockheed Martin and its JSF industry partners give fair consideration to Australian industry," says Greg Combet, minister for defense personnel, material and science.

It's fine that the financial crisis unaffected Australia --- although, vide my confession above, my ignorance of economics makes me unable to understand how paying 3.2 in return for getting back the .2 is a clear benefit --- however, whilst there are good reasons for any small country to keep their military training and arms state-of-the-art, and even better reasons to maintain a fearsome military at all [ see: Finland ], these things don't come cheap, and I'm not at all sure this is the wisest choice ( I have no military expertise, admittedly ). Australia's adjacent enemies are Indonesia, Japan and China --- sure, Russia or America or Chile may someday attack, but they'd have to go a very long way around --- None of these are in a position to declare war on Australia in the next couple of decades, and

a/. China at least would have enough firepower to counter 86 fighters.

b/. Australia's government would let them all in anyway if they came peacefully;

c/. As the fighters will be stationed in America, they will not be... instantly available to the Motherland's anguish once the clarion of war sings out.

At the cost broken down, 86 fighters will come to A$18.4 billion; but, equipment costs never actually decrease or attract discounts so the final bill is more likely to be A$20 billion in 12 years time.

They might be better advised to buy cheaper fighters and spend the rest on the navy since they've got that amount of money to chuck around.

Or just buy Indonesia.

Actually, the best position to defend an asset may not be near that asset. Although it does not 'seem' feasible it may well be that after takeoff from a US base in Hawaii or Guam that the Aussie fighters could counter attack most effectively(?)

However, I do wonder about tremendous commitment of financial assets to weapons that already are conceptually obsolete. The US itself is committed towards a future of military UAVs clouding the heavens. They are cheap, expendable and there has been a whole generation of Remote Control Operators trained as Gamsters (re: the movie, Toys)

Well, on Drones led by the Drone-in-Chief...

...the hard left Free Speech Zone has had some recent threads...

[ Possibly distressing pics, although once you've seen photos of the air-bombing of Germany... ]

http://www.freespeechzoneblog.com/d...sh-theyre-antiwarwhen-its-obama-war-is-change

One poster waxes eloquent:

Daily Kos Poster Aarujo is being depolyed to Afghanistan to get the job done. And I applaud this brave young fighting man or woman who has the guts to do something for his country, to protect it's freedom from those who wish us ill.

My main concern however is the safety of our drones. These incredible machines do the work of our brave young fighting men or women, protecting them day in and day out from the heat of battle.

Two days ago one of our drones was shot down in Afghanistan. There was almost no reporting done. There is no ceremony, there is no funeral, there are not letters or medals that are awarded our drones.

They just do their job. And some of them never make it back. They are regarded as "things".

They are not things, they are drones and whether they are made out of metal or flesh, shouldn't matter. They are protecting our soldiers from AL Queda.

I would ask this poster Aarujo to do something for the drones. We need to raise our conciousness about them. Some of them need a little more oil, or a paint job, or just a name emblazoned across their nose. Anything anyone here can donate to extend the life of these fantastic creations would be appreciated, I'm sure by the drone community.

It could make all the difference in the world.

Save our drones.

Sitting in front of computer screens in a trailer truck in the Nevada desert, American soldiers pilot Predator unmanned aircrafts over the rooftops of targets in Afghanistan. As they watch live images of their target from the aircraft on their screens, they can drop a 500-pound bomb on a building 8,000 miles away at the click of a button.

Still, economic warfare was just as effective...

http://www.freespeechzoneblog.com/diary/5374/a-message-from-iraq

Ms. Bellamy noted that if the substantial reduction in child mortality throughout Iraq during the 1980s had continued through the 1990s, there would have been half a million fewer deaths of children under-five in the country as a whole during the eight year period 1991 to 1998.

All this might be less annoying if those directing the bush-wars would have the imagination to offer better reasons. 'We bomb them because they hate us.' doesn't really cut it.

Hmmm only one of the "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" is War. Two of the others are Famine and Disease, they might be a lot cheaper to maintain than the mechanism/horse of War and still get the job done...

Moral Imperative

A few years back one particularly disgusting individual was appointed as Tony Blair's handler by the powers that be, a Mr. Alistair Campbell; although condemned like old Tony himself to be a forgotten footnote in the annals of history, he should be remembered solely for the splendid interruption with which he spoilt a reporter's question on Blair's faith: "We don't do God." he firmly interjected. Prolly to his greasy little boss's disappointment.

Now, it is my understanding that the lunatic Bush sometimes suggested that before they all got down to discussing business --- maybe re-bombing Serbia or Iraq or... well, anywhere that could do with a good bombing; or just a trade agreement --- the assembled goons should get on their knees and have a good old-fashioned prayer session: but thankfully outside Islamic governance, which is a special case, few international politicians mix religion with raison d'etat as prescribed by Johnnie Knox and the Krazy Kalvinist Kids, and that applied even in fully confessional states such as Austria-Hungary or Czarist Russia.

And this applies even with the new substitute-religion of Liberalism: whatever the fawning before the divine creeds and doctrines, praise of impossible things which are mandated for belief --- the philosophical basis for accepting democracy; the equal insistance that direct democracy ( doing what voters wish ) is sinful; the postulation that we are all simple uniformed blank slates with equal potentialities thus not individuals; that we must strive to express and live our lives as atomistic individuals, etc. --- and whatever else makes liberals feel like noble little saints, at least they don't mix their faith in with whatever they do themselves.

However, with or without religion, why do quite ordinary undistinguished and generally incapable people seek power to direct others ? What propels them to impose their moral codes which unconvenience the majority and benefit few ? The obvious interpretation is money; but this is rather too simplistic and banal. Power itself is the major propeller, 'Because We Can !'; but there remains something more: tentatively I would like to suggest most politicians are schizophrenics. In a medical meaning, not the various popular insulting imaginings:

One schizophrenic individual I came in contact with while interviewing was a man who exhibited nearly all of the “textbook” symptoms of schizophrenia. He claimed that the radio and television had been talking to him for many years. As well, he described his environment as a blurry construction of objects which constantly switched appearance and he had many hallucinations of people that were long dead or characters from movies or television. While this individual was clearly very impaired, he seemed friendly and compliant and said that he was allowing the interview because he believed we were “doing God’s work,” although he was hesitant in admitting this belief.

One patient, Mr. B., suffered from command hallucinations. He described the experience as loud voices inside his head, asking him to perform certain acts, as well as hearing distant conversations and “messages from God.” However, Mr. B never engaged in violence and felt the idea was abhorrent. In fact, Mr. B described some of his auditory hallucinations in a positive light, hearing things like “You’re doing well.” I have found that a vast majority of people with schizophrenia are religious, and many attribute their ‘abilities’ to a higher power. The majority of patients who are under proper treatment often have delusions that, while disorganized and detached, that they must help mankind, or have an ability to help mankind. An example is Mr. C.

Mr. C was an inpatient at one of the psychiatric wards. He had a classic textbook symptom often referred to as word salad; he produced words that made no sense and seemingly created without a purpose. He constantly referred to something called “the Pababa,” although he never defined it. One of his delusions was that maple syrup and bubble gum caused schizophrenia, and his job was to warn people of this fact. He felt he was truly entrusted with this mission, and although he did not attribute this moral imperative to religious roots, still felt that he needed to help people. Religion or not, it does seem that many schizophrenic individuals do believe that they can and/or must help people.* Another patient, Ms. D, felt she was going to save the world at age 100 by being sawn in half. While these beliefs would seem to an unafflicted individual bizarre and perhaps misguided, most schizophrenic individuals lack insight into their illness and consider these beliefs to be completely accurate.

James I. Wasserman Phd. The Villain : Myths and Misconceptions

* My emphasis. I should also like to say I think the first paragraph sounds a lot like one long past politician elected to the highest office in his vast land whom for privacy reasons I'll simply refer to as R. R.

Having the role of "Leader" foisted upon myself on a number of occasions, I do question the sanity or morality of those who actively seek such a role. There really is nothing in the role itself, that is particularly rewarding. Unless one happens to enjoy being set up as the 'scapegoat' for the entire group's failure to perform...

No the perks have to be 'extracurricular'...

A Sort of Wal Mart in Hell

The last round of Balkan Wars having been tangentially referred to...

I would start by saying firmly that I lived through that period and at no time before, during and since, did I understand: what was going on; why each group of ex-commie thugs wanted to kill each other for apparent nationalistic reasons; or which was more in the right than the other. I don't think they did either.

The intervention of major powers had it's usual soothing effect, and things exploded much more. Literally in fact, it being the USA involved --- never one's to understand wise old Otto's dictum: "Not worth the bones of one Pomeranian Grenadier." --- and to the fore was the embittered Representative of Ressentiment, Hillary herself.

Now, people may be surprised that I prefer the election of Obama --- not for any, mainly imagined, virtues he may have, and hilariously attributed to his divinity by his deluded followers --- but because otherwise it would have been Mr. McCain or Mrs. Clinton. In the case of the first, between the choices of right-wing capitalist authoritarian imperialists I would rather have a lazy old incompetent like Obama than a crazy old hothead like McCain. Lazy unprepared people aren't good at planning the Apocalypse.

Either though were preferable to Hil.

Try this one out on your friends and family. Ask them to name all the wars that we’ve fought or funded since they were born. Few Americans can do this. Think about it. So many wars and so few concerns. Why do these wars start? How do they end? Do they end? Who gives a damn? Britney’s trying to have a baby.

The 1990s were a particularly bloody period—and a downright rough time to be a cartographer. Americans learned new words, like “Kyrgyzstan” and compound appellations like “Kohistan-Badakhshan.” Suddenly the Risk board sort of made sense, but maps had the shelf lives of tomatoes. We also lost terms like “Serbo-Croatian,” while dusting off old ones like “Balkanization."

And then there was Kosovo. This was Bill and Hillary’s war. But let’s back up here—quite a bit. In the 1350s Kosovo was the heartland of Serbia, and the population was close to 90 percent ethnic Serbs. Now remember, this is a real slow-spinning part of the globe where people have long memories and somewhat short lives, and Kosovo still has a mythic lure for the Serbs. By the 1990s, however, no matter how the Serbs remembered it, Kosovo was close to 90 percent Albanian. Albania had undergone a rough few centuries, resulting in a country that really sucked by the end of the Cold War, hence the 500-year exodus.

When I was a kid, very few Americans were aware of the existence of Albania. It was, and still is for that matter, the poorest nation in Europe. During the Cold War it was run by a tragically comical and rather peculiar dictator, Enver Hoxha, whose legacy was cemented with his government’s construction of 750,000 odd little bunkers scattered around his gray-on-gray nation. Hoxha was a Stalinist to the end, even denouncing the Soviet Union when it finally denounced Stalin in the late 1950s. By the 1970s Hoxha had broken ties with both the Soviets and the Chinese, declaring his Hoxharian regime to be the only true communist nation. He had a mélange of silly followers among upper middle class college kids in the US, but little support in his own hunger-ravaged country. During his reign, Albania’s biggest export was people. Hoxha’s bunker-laden country was a twisted parody of itself.

Next door to Albania was Tito’s Yugoslavia. They held their own pretty well resisting the Nazis in World War II, eventually developing one of the Soviet Bloc’s strongest economies and all that wonderful infrastructure we’ve subsequently seen blown to hell in a nasty series of “my accent is purer than yours” wars. The idea that Hoxha’s Albania would one day rise and seize Yugoslavia’s historic heartland wasn’t on my radar any more than the possibility that my gerbil would escape and force my neighbor’s German Shepherd to learn ballet. Of course the idea of a “can’t keep his dick in his pants” Arkansas dope-nonsmoking warmongering peacenik rising to the presidency wasn’t on my radar either.

By the late 1990s, with much of what we now call “the former Yugoslavia” up in flames and ethnically Balkanized, Kosovo burst into our lexicon. It seems the “everyone else is a xenophobic dumbfuck so why not us” virus finally reached the ancient Serb heartland of Little Albania. What happened next is up for contention, but by most documentable accounts the Albanian majority violently set upon the Serb minority. Since Kosovo is part of Serbia, however, the Serb government, who were among the last folks left calling themselves “Yugoslavians,” sent troops in to quell the slaughter. And I just can’t imagine them being polite or civil.

Here’s where the US comes into play. The American media started echoing unconfirmed reports of “genocide” by Serbs against Albanians—something to the tune of 4,500 ethnic Albanian men executed and another 100,000 missing. For the record, these allegations were never fully corroborated by the international tribunal that was formed after the war for the specific purpose of investigating such claims. Oops again. But we’re Americans. We don’t need facts to justify war—especially when rumors are so much juicier. So off we went, ostensibly to save the Albanian people from genocide. More on why we actually went in a moment.

Our idea of war in this case was to have our air force sloppily rain down wholesale death from above, with few boots on the ground. We now know that Bill Clinton’s war targeted civilians and littered both Serbia and Kosovo with radioactive weapons whose debris is still causing major health problems for both the conquered and the liberated. We hit an open air market with cluster bombs. That was officially a mistake. We blew up an urban commuter train in the Serb capital—nowhere near Kosovo. That one turned out to be intentional. Commuter trains run on tracks and bridges that could also be used to move weapons within Serbia. Think blowing up the New York Thruway during a traffic jam, calling it a military target since convoys occasionally run from Fort Drum to points west. Sure, the attack was a war crime, but we instead decided to impeach Clinton over a blowjob.

For sport, we bombed the Chinese embassy, killing three and wounding another 20 people. We claimed our maps were lousy and TomToms weren’t invented yet. And we blew up chemical plants, unleashing a ghastly stew into the Danube River, just to see what would happen, I guess.

In a harbinger of things to come under W’s regime, Bill Clinton ordered the military to bomb Serbia’s main TV station, killing 16 people—another clear and unprosecuted war crime. The same raid took out the CNN office in Belgrade as well. This was a legitimate military target because, well, er, you know, journalists, they, uh...

The American press shamelessly gave this gross war crime a pass, paving the way for George W’s regime to bomb Al Jazeera’s offices in both Kabul and Baghdad as well as a hotel full of unembedded reporters also in Baghdad.

The 1999 war in Serbia and Kosovo finally ended with an armistice agreement between NATO and the Serb government, brokered by the UN, guaranteeing the geographic and national intergrity of Serbia while allowing limited local autonomy for Serbia’s Albanian Kosovar population. NATO troops took over “peacekeeping” in Kosovo with Serb troops barred from that portion of their country. That was the deal.

The war sort of ended for a while—at least officially. As NATO peacekeepers hunkered down, the Albanian mafia quickly took control over much of Kosovo. Albanian racists forced around a quarter million non-Albanian Kosovars from their homes, transforming areas that were ethnically diverse for a half millenia into ethnically pure Albanian communities. Non-Albanians fled en masse. In hindsight, while the alleged wholesale persecution of the majority by a minority, the ostensible reason for our going to war, might never have happened on the scale we were told it was happening, our little war paved the way for the Albanian majority to terrorize Kosovo’s minorities. I guess we didn’t see it coming. Or maybe we just didn’t care.

In fact we had something else on our minds. That was the construction of Camp Bondsteel—a permanent, 1,000-acre US occupation base on Serbian territory strategically near the border of Macedonia. Before George W ever set foot in the White House, Halliburton already had built this fortress and started to run its concessions, making the company Kosovo’s largest employer—a sort of Wal Mart in hell.

This little American city is an unwelcome squatter on Serbian territory—sort of like our little Gitmo cyst in Cuba. But it’s another “we’re digging in and staying for good” situation. Last week when Kosovo’s genocidal-maniacs-turned-favored-statesmen declared independence, both George W. Bush and Hillary Clinton were quick to recognize the “new nation.” Did I mention that “free” Kosovo welcomes Camp Bondsteel and a further enhanced US military presence?

Hillary Clinton actually went a step beyond W on this one, brazenly referring to Kosovo not by its common name but by the Albanian name, “Kosova.” Quite predictably, the Serbs went apeshit, and rioters trashed the US embassy in Belgrade. The failure on the part of the Serbian police to protect sovereign US diplomatic territory, according to both an enraged W and a verbose Hillary Clinton, amounted to a violation of international law—an ironic charge, at least from Bush, who never before recognized the existence of such law. One has to assume that neither George W, nor Hillary Clinton, saw the 1999 US war against Serbia, or the US bombing of Belgrade’s Chinese embassy, as a violation of international law. This is par for the course for W, but a new tack for attorney Clinton, who seems to be shaping up her cowboy creds in hopes of a showdown against John McCain at the OK corral. International treaties, and our word, be damned.

A sovereign Kosovo means Camp Bondsteel gets to stay. And we get to permanently project our military power further east toward the Caspian oil fields. This, of course, upsets the Russians to no end.

I don’t see what benefit can come from continuing to poke the Russians with needles just for the sake of humiliating them. Things didn’t turn out too well when we did that to the Germans after World War I. It took them just 20 years to rise up as heavily armed demons from hell—and the rest is history. Too bad Bush doesn’t follow history and Clinton is too obsessed by her present ambition to care. Let’s see, the Cold War ended when? And how have we been treating the Russians since then? For the record, the Russians are close allies with the Serbs. And the Russians have told the world in no uncertain terms that our military encroachment onto their former sphere of influence is a no-no. Oh yeah, and they have lots of nuclear bombs—which makes them the only partner we have if we want to bring on the apocalypse.

There’s another problem with the Bush-Clinton recognition of “Kosova.” Aside from reminding the whole world once again, only now in bipartisan fashion, that our word and our treaties are worthless, the precedent threatens to light a dozen powder kegs and incite all sorts of xenophobes with utopian visions of ethnically pure Vaterlands.

It’s simple—a local government declares its independence. If they have something we want, we recognize them as a new democracy. This can happen anywhere. Think, for example, Quebec, where Francophones regularly threaten to succeed from Canada. Remember the Quebec Hydro project? The plan to flood a France-sized area of northern Quebec in order to run hydroelectric plants, seemingly for the production of hydrogen for fuel cells? Ostensibly defeated due to environmental concerns—like predictions that it would alter global weather patterns—the plan was simply ahead of its time. An independent Quebec would assure US energy companies control of the Quebecois hydrobooty.

Let’s shift over to another part of the world. Think Chechnya. That would be a fun one for a President McCain to unilaterally recognize. Can you say “first strike”? Are we ready for another round of global borders in play? Spain’s Basque region. Kurdish Turkey. Greek Macedonia. Hell, think Texas. I’m not saying some of these folks don’t have legitimate gripes or righteous cases for sovereignty. It’s just that the Bush-Clinton model of “go for it and we’ll back you” threatens to wreak massive havoc, fuel wars and negate the legitimacy of international institutions such as the UN that have been succeeding in thwarting dozens of wars.

This is typical Bush foreign policy. As for Hillary Clinton, she probably thinks her hawkish machismo will play well in Texas and Ohio. And for Hillary, there is no tomorrow without Texas and Ohio. If a few small countries go up in flames along the way—oh well. C’est la guerre.

Re: Much Firmer Cost Estimates

Australia's adjacent enemies are Indonesia, Japan and China --- sure, Russia or America or Chile may someday attack, but they'd have to go a very long way around --- None of these are in a position to declare war on Australia in the next couple of decades, and

a/. China at least would have enough firepower to counter 86 fighters.

b/. Australia's government would let them all in anyway if they came peacefully;

UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR ON THE RIGHT OF EVERYONE TO THE ENJOYMENT OF THE HIGHEST ATTAINABLE STANDARD OF PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH
Mr Anand Grover

Preliminary observations and recommendations

Canberra, 4 December 2009

Good morning ladies and gentlemen.

It is a great privilege for me to be here and I would like to thank the Government of Australia for inviting me and facilitating the organization of an interesting programme. I would also like to acknowledge the traditional owners of this land, the Ngunnawal people.

During my 12-day mission I visited Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne, Alice Springs, Darwin and Brisbane. I had the pleasure of meeting the Minister of Health and Ageing, the Honourable Nicola Roxon, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Honourable Chris Evans, the Minister for Indigenous Health, the Honourable Warren Snowdon as well as a number of senior Government officials. Throughout the mission, all levels of Government and other relevant actors were candid, open and constructive. I take this opportunity to thank all those who have given their time and extended co-operation to me. I also had the opportunity to meet with representatives of civil society organizations and communities, academics and health professionals. I would like to warmly thank Dr. Ngaire Brown, Mr. Michael Levy, Professor Ian Anderson and Ms. Elisabeth Evatt, amongst others, for their valuable contributions and insights.

I would also like to thank the United Nations Information Centre for their support and for organizing this press conference.

You will find in the room a short document that explains my responsibilities as the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health. It also provides some additional background information on the mission itself.

I am an independent expert who reports to and advises the UN Human Rights Council and UN General Assembly. I am not a member of the UN secretariat and I am not paid by the United Nations. As an independent expert, I exercise my professional judgment, and report to the United Nations.

What follows are my preliminary observations and recommendations which will be further developed in the report that I will submit to the United Nations Human Rights Council when it meets in June next year.

The focus of this mission was on two main issues – indigenous health and access to healthcare in detention establishments, including those for asylum-seekers, refugees and prisoners. I looked at these issues through the prism of the right to health. But that was one of my major challenges as there is no legal right to health in Australia. In addition, Australia is apparently the only developed liberal democracy that does not provide constitutional guarantee for human rights. Nevertheless, Australia’s obligations to respect and protect human rights derives from its adherence to the core human rights treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention against torture or the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Australia’s failure to incorporate international human rights standards enshrined in treaties to which it is a party into domestic law remains an issue of great concern for me, as those rights need to be enforceable at the national level. I make note of the recent National Human Rights Consultation process, culminating in a report which recommended the increased recognition of human rights within Australia. I urge the Government to take necessary steps to incorporate international human rights standards into domestic legislation, all of which should be justiciable, including economic, social and cultural rights. This would provide an effective remedy to all those whose rights may have been violated.

The health of Australia’s refugee and asylum seeker population in detention has been a significant concern for many years, which is why I visited two immigration detention centres – Maribyrnong in Melbourne, and Villawood in Sydney – as well as the Brisbane Immigration Transit Centre.

Some of the Government’s policy changes surrounding immigration detention, particularly around frequency of review of detention, are to be commended. The average lengths of time for which individuals are detained have significantly decreased, diminishing the inherent risk of mental illness associated with indefinite detention. Removal of temporary protection visas has also gone some way towards ameliorating uncertainty within this population. Provision of health services in mainland immigration detention centres appears generally satisfactory.

However, I would like to emphasize my overriding concerns regarding the situation of persons in detention centres: the fact that detention remains mandatory, with no maximum limits on duration of stay, and that there are no binding legal standards that must be met in providing services. These factors impact negatively on the status of health of persons in detention.

Moreover, the excising of the Christmas Island under the Migration Act, whereby refugee claims are determined by a non-statutory process, means that Island detainees lack the same rights to judicial review as their mainland counterparts.

Although processing time on Christmas Island has decreased, major problems remain concerning the accessibility and appropriateness of the facility. These factors, particularly the logistical difficulties associated with airplane access, make rendering health and other services extremely challenging and present a significant obstacle to ensuring on-going monitoring by non-governmental and independent stakeholders. It is telling that I was unable to visit the island during my Australian mission, as the charter flight schedule would have meant I would have had to stay for four days – this rendered a visit impossible in terms of my schedule, and would represent a major impediment for other professionals, such as legal aid or healthcare workers.

The health of Australia’s prison population was also an issue of concern to me. I had the opportunity to visit two prisons during my time in Australia: Long Bay, in Sydney, and Alice Springs Correctional Centre. There are clearly positive initiatives in place in both – for example, establishment of a tertiary prison hospital in the former, and the Elders Visiting Program in the latter – however they share many challenges. These include adequate provision of primary health care, resourcing of health promotion projects, and provision of appropriate services to a population of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders disproportionately represented in prisons. I would recommend that the Government invests additional funds with a view to ensuring sustainable delivery of primary healthcare services.

Individuals with mental illnesses are overrepresented in all types of custody. The deinstitutionalization of mental health services over recent times is a welcome development in healthcare, but inadequate resourcing of alternative services has resulted in a shift of individuals with mental illnesses to the nation’s prisons.

Indigenous populations are also vastly overrepresented in the prison population. There is a triad of vulnerability that I have observed, consisting of incarceration, mental illness, and being of Indigenous descent. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with mental illnesses who become involved in the justice system invariably experience negative health outcomes. A vicious cycle appears to be occurring whereby this population is, in effect, criminalized. This is exacerbated by issues of dual diagnosis: that is, drug and alcohol problems coexisting with mental illness. As such, diversion programs, sentencing policies and criminal laws must all be considered when broadly assessing the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, as incarceration has wide-ranging detrimental health effects.

Whilst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are overrepresented in the prisoner population, they are underrepresented in the prison staff cohort; this should be addressed through targeted programs that recruit and engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers and correctional staff in a culturally appropriate manner. Additionally, there needs to be an increased and proactive focus on health promotion activities as well harm reduction interventions, such as needle and syringe exchange programmes, to address the preventive health needs of inmates of all cultural backgrounds.

Knowing Australia to be a developed, prosperous country, I was moved by the stories told to me by indigenous communities, the living conditions I saw, and the extent of preventable disease and health-related disability I witnessed among those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. The right of a significant proportion of Australia’s indigenous populations to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health is being violated. Basic needs, such as adequate housing, safe drinking water and sanitation and access to education are not being met. Unresolved issue surrounding native titles and land rights continue to have a detrimental impact. Communities are not benefitting from the equal access to primary healthcare facilities which are at times inaccessible or inappropriate. This is sometimes due to lack of transportation and communication infrastructure, but more often due to direct discrimination and culturally inappropriate services being provided. Institutions and processes, particularythose linked to tertiary care, and staff are not adequately supported to address the specific needs and vulnerabilities of the indigenous communities they serve. Such inequities are incompatible with basic principles of the right to health including equality and non-discrimination.

Decades of neglect, racism and discrimination have stigmatized and disempowered these populations, impeding equal access to basic services, leaving them on the margins of the Australian society. Since the official recognition of Aboriginals as citizens in 1967 there have been improvements made, but more remains to be done. Certainly, Australia’s support of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the apology to the Stolen Generations were commendable, but there is much more to be done. Progress cannot be made on this important issue without respectful and open dialogue and cooperation among all parties. I would like to strongly encourage this dialogue in the quest for truth and reconciliation about difficult issues concerning colonization and consequent disempowerment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.

Including the indigenous population in policy and decision–making processes is necessary to build relationships which would ensure genuine protection of their interests, while securing their respective cultural identities and self-determination, and restoring respect and dignity. I note that the Government has signaled an intention to establish the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples, which represents one mechanism by which this engagement could occur. However, I would stress the importance of legislative guarantees, or other such mechanisms, to ensure that the opinions of any such body must be taken into account.

Initiatives such as this are a welcome development, and represent major progress – but other initiatives in recent times have proved not as successful. The Northern Territory Emergency Response has unfortunately undermined some of this progress in efforts towards reconciliation, as communities describe the NTER as paternalistic, disempowering and racially motivated. It exposed the weaknesses in protection of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, and highlights the need for entrenched Constitutional protection for them.

Furthermore, the NTER failed to meet basic standards of a rights-based approach to health, such as the development of a transparent plan with clear benchmarks and indicators, participation, the meaningful engagement of communities and the establishment of mechanisms for monitoring and accountability.. Some aspects of the NTER have been considered beneficial; notably, that it sent a message of unprecedented political and financial commitment to address the rights and needs of indigenous communities. Income management aspects of the intervention were described favourably by some, but as disempowering by most – and my attention was drawn to similar initiatives in other States that have been implemented on a voluntary basis with success. The specific approach regrettably undermined existing health structures and the ongoing efforts of service providers in the Northern Territory, rather than strengthening their role in providing the solution. Overall, the NTER has undermined Aboriginals’ and Torres Strait Islandes self-determination and progress made to date by the communities themselves in addressing their own health needs and therefore has presented an obstacle to continuing further significant improvements in the health outcomes of these communities.

As the intervention initially stood, it was inherently flawed, and some of the measures imposed were in direct breach of Australia’s international human rights obligations. I welcome the Government’s decision to reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act in the Northern Territory, but it is of utmost importance that such changes are accompanied by the immediate implementation of appropriate measures. This would bring future programmes and policies in line with the change. In this context, I welcome the current government’s recognition of some of the NTER’s limitations, and its efforts to address these through an extensive consultation and review process.

In order to realize the right to the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health for indigenous communities, there is a need for significant, ongoing commitment and investment in a combination of both symbolic and practical measures to empower communities of Australians of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent. I welcome the recent, unprecedented investment of $1.6 billion for indigenous health, the government’s support for an Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islanders’ Healing Foundation and the announcement of a new co-operative framework between community-controlled health services and the Federal and Territory governments, with a view to increasing indigenous peoples' control over planning, development and delivery of primary health care. This approach further enhances the commitments Australian Governments have already made in order to achieve indigenous health equality within a generation.

It is of utmost importance that sufficient funding is allocated to Aboriginal community controlled health services which have a proven record of delivering health services to Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. Where mainstream services provide care to indigenous communities, capacity and cultural competence needs to be upgraded. Communication between tertiary and primary care providers in particular must be improved, and outreach services tailored to provide acceptable services to these populations. Leaders within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community have a vital role to play in policy and decision making and in increasing participation of their own community members in healthcare services.

In accordance with a rights-based approach I would like to highlight the need for a long-term national plan of action with clear targets, benchmarks and indicators to evaluate progress and guide State and Commonwealth priorities and actions. Such a plan would necessarily include addressing underlying determinants of health (such as adequate housing and access to safe water and sanitation), social determinants of health, as well as racism. Undivided support and implementation of the Close the Gap Campaign is crucial to ensuring capacity building and empowerment of indigenous communities to take a leadership role in realizing the right to health for all Australians. Barriers at the institutional level, including those influencing policies, allocation of finances and the level of human rights protections currently impede the achievement of equality and non-discrimination, and require action.

I visited hospitals in Alice Springs and Darwin and was impressed by the dedication of health professionals despite the lack of adequate means to address obstacles in realizing the right to health of their patients. Throughout the world, health professionals are often first to witness the effects of torture, trauma or substance use. They are also the key players in monitoring, documenting and achieving redress for human rights abuses. Although ethics training is a component of current programmes, regrettably, human rights training is not included in the curricula for health professionals in Australia. The practice of health professionals has a bearing upon the various aspects of the enjoyment of the right to health such as confidentiality, consent and access to treatment. Lack of human rights training may result in violations of patients’ human rights. I therefore call upon the Government to include obligatory human rights training in the curricula for health professionals.

During my mission, I met many people of good will and incredible commitment, genuinely concerned about the human rights of all Australians. However, this mission has confirmed for me that the realization of the right to health of some Australians, especially those in detention and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders remains a significant challenge to the nation. Guaranteeing human rights protections through supportive legal and policy frameworks alongside practical, targeted interventions that place empowerment and meaningful community engagement at their centre are necessary to ensure the right to health for all Australians.

In introducing a 1999 Australian Institute of Criminology conference on art crime AIC Director Adam Graycar commented that

Irresponsible and distorted claims of fraud in the popular media have threatened the major multi-million dollar art industry in Australia. Art crime is often a hidden crime as many public galleries do not report theft which would show their security as being inadequate and private collections may not wish to call attention to their collections. The legitimate art market often unknowingly passes on stolen art, and the criminal art market operates in quite a different way to the general market for stolen goods.
US curator Theodore Rousseau offered a different view, commenting that

As with much fraud, art forgery is a function of the forger's ingenuity or skill and what the market will accept.

Mechanisms for forgery include -

 • fake signatures - adding a recognised artist's signature (often considered to be a valuable indicator of originality) to an unsigned work not executed by that artist or by deleting an existing signature in favour of one from a more recognised artist

gatekeepers?

In introducing this profile we suggested that in practice there is an a price threshhold for collectibles - whether the used socks of Australian cricketing greats or a Mantegna canvas - beneath which there is little concern for provenance or forensic analysis. In the world of fine arts there is recurrent concern about the gatekeepers concerned with forged works priced above that threshhold.

Perceived poor performance by gatekeepers such as leading auction houses, curatorial institutions and authenticators reflects

Han van Meegeren (1889-1947) concentrated on forgery of Vermeer, with his Christ at Emmaus being acclaimed as authentic by art historian Abraham Bredius in 1937 and then sold for the equivalent of US$6 million. Bredius commented

"Hello Mr President"

An hour or two back the not unexpected news arrived that the tedious Mr. Brown had defeated the depressing Mrs. Coakley in the bid for the Chappaquiddick seat. Only by a small margin --- it would have been greater had the voters discovered that Martha moonlights as an exotic dancer and 'escort', perhaps --- but the unique combination of horse-racing and theatre which constitutes the fallacious allure of any election is purposed to disguise the fact that nothing is changed and the same things that were going to be done by government will continue exactly as they were going to be done just as if all the candidates were gerbils.

However, a few right-wingers got enthused over the fact that some voters had erected hand-made signs in their yards plugging the corporate winner-to-be ( as opposed to his corporate opponent ), which reminded me of something.

11 Sept 2009 --- Crooked Timber

The Economist’s Brussels correspondent muses on the difference between German and American campaigning.

The Bavarian event was genuine, in a way that stage-managed American politics cannot match. There is a lot that is creepy about an American campaign event. Arriving early at Bush rallies, I would watch aggressive and chilly young Republican aides in smart suits kneeling on gymnasium floors with fistfuls of different felt tip marker pens, and large rectangles of white card. Frowning with concentration, they would then write things like “South Dakota Loves W” in deliberately babyish writing, or pick out the words “Hello Mr President” in red, white and blue lettering. The styles and slogans would be carefully varied, and the end results were impressive: a stack of signs that looked as though supporters of all ages had lovingly written them out on homely kitchen tables. Then, when the crowd arrived (all of them invited and vetted as bona fide Bush supporters) any of them who had forgotten instructions not to bring signs of their own would have them politely confiscated. Then they would be handed one of the ersatz home-made signs by one of the chilly, bossy young munchkins from campaign HQ. On television, it all looked very sweet.

If You Can Fake Authenticity You Have It Made

I remembered this particularly for two of the fine comments after:

One should read the column to which the blog entry refers- it’s a piece of work. It’s an exercise in what one might call reverse Schadenfreude- a right-wing Brit, jealous that Germany with its “social market model” has ridden out the global crisis so much more effectively than his own country and his beloved Thatcherism-Blairism, is reduced to thumbing his nose and saying saying “nyah-nyah, it all MIGHT fall apart tomorrow.”

I thought the subtitle of that Economist story was essentially the subtitle of every Economist story about the German economy for the past twenty years: “Why Germany is dangerously complacent about its social-market model.”

I'm quite sure that nearly every German or French candidate is at heart a boring old fuck, but they cannot yet match the pure envy and hypocrisy of Anglo boring old fucks and their attentive munchkins.

Command Performance

Vasili Mikhailovich Blokhin (1895 – February 1955) was a Soviet Major-General who served as the chief executioner of the Stalinist NKVD under the administrations of Genrikh Yagoda, Nikolai Yezhov and Lavrenty Beria.

Hand-picked for the position by Joseph Stalin in 1926, Blokhin led a company of executioners that performed the majority of executions carried out during Stalin's reign (most during the Great Purge). Claims by the Soviet government put the number of NKVD official executions at 828,000 during Stalin's reign, and Blokhin is recorded as having personally executed tens of thousands of prisoners by his own hand over a 26-year period—including 7,000 condemned Polish POWs in one protracted mass execution. --- making him ostensibly the most prolific official executioner in recorded world history. He was awarded both the Order of the Badge of Honor (1937) and the Order of the Red Banner (1941).

...

Once he caught Stalin's eye, he was quickly promoted and within six years was appointed the head of the purpose-created Kommandatura Branch of the Administrative Executive Department of the NKVD. This branch was a company-sized element created by Stalin specifically for "black work" missions. Headquartered at the Lubyanka in Moscow, they were all approved by Stalin and took their orders directly from his hand, a fact that ensured the unit's longevity despite three bloody purges of the NKVD. As senior executioner, Blokhin's official title was that of Commandant of the internal prison at the Lubyanka, which allowed him to perform his true job with a minimum of scrutiny and no official paperwork.

...

Blokhin's most notable performance was the April 1940 mass execution by shooting of 7,000 Polish officers, captured following the Soviet invasion of Poland, from the Ostashkov POW camp, during the Katyn massacre. Based on the 4 April secret order from Stalin to NKVD Chief Lavrenti Beria ( as well as NKVD Order № 00485, which still applied ), the executions were carried out in 28 consecutive nights at the specially-constructed basement execution chamber at the NKVD headquarters in Kalinin ( now Tver ), and were assigned, by name, directly to Blokhin, making him the official executioner of the NKVD.

Blokhin initially decided on an ambitious quota of 300 executions per night, and engineered an efficient system in which the prisoners were individually led to a small antechamber --- which had been painted red and was known as the "Leninist room" --- for a brief and cursory positive identification, before being handcuffed and led into the execution room next door. The room was specially designed with padded walls for soundproofing, a sloping concrete floor with a drain and hose, and a log wall for the prisoners to stand against. Blokhin --- outfitted in a leather butcher's apron, cap, and shoulder-length gloves to protect his uniform --- then pushed the prisoner against the log wall and shot him once in the base of the skull with a German Walther Model 2 .25 ACP pistol. He had brought a briefcase full of his own Walther pistols, since he did not trust the reliability of the standard-issue Soviet TT-30 for the frequent, heavy use he intended. The use of a German pocket pistol, which was commonly carried by Nazi intelligence agents, also provided plausible deniability of the executions if the bodies were discovered later.

Between 20 to 30 local NKVD agents, guards and drivers were pressed into service to escort prisoners to the basement, confirm identification, then remove the bodies and hose down the blood after each execution. Although some of the executions were carried out by Senior Lieutenant of State Security Andrei M. Rubanov, Blokhin was the primary executioner and, true to his reputation, liked to work continuously and rapidly without interruption. In keeping with NKVD policy and the overall "black" nature of the operation, the executions were conducted at night, starting at dark and continuing until just prior to dawn. The initial quota of 300 was lowered by Blokhin to 250 after the first night, when it was decided that all further executions should take place in total darkness. The bodies were continuously loaded onto covered flat-bed trucks through a back door in the execution chamber and trucked, twice a night, to Mednoye, where Blokhin had arranged for a bulldozer and two NKVD drivers to dispose of bodies at an unfenced site. Each night, 24 to 25 trenches, measuring eight to ten meters total, were dug to hold the night's corpses, and each trench was covered up before dawn. Blokhin and his team worked without pause for ten hours each night, with Blokhin executing an average of one prisoner every three minutes. At the end of the night, Blokhin provided vodka to all his men.

On 27 April 1940, Blokhin secretly received the Order of the Red Banner and a modest monthly pay premium as a reward from Joseph Stalin for his "skill and organization in the effective carrying out of special tasks". His count of 7,000 shot in 28 days remains one of the most organized and protracted mass murders by a single individual on record.

Still, lest anyone get too sentimental over the killings in their thousands by the communists, the nazis, the English, the catholics, the Americans, the Austrians, the jews or whomever one feels like getting worked up about: millions of animals are executed by humans every damn day, and no slaughterhouseperson feels the faintest twinge. In such cases of official state sanctioned death penalty in extremis such as this soviet example, it merely becomes a matter of bad taste.

We are lucky this Hero of Socialist Labour did not live to become the star of a new Cable TV contest series: Ultimate Executing.

Ah Yes, another unsung hero of the Humanists.

Alas - rape, murder and sadistic videos are popular with a disturbingly large audience. You hypothetical reality show already has a ready made market.

A black African meditation upon what Islam means to them...

Jerusalem was captured by the Arabs in 638 CE. Alexandria in Egypt fell to them in 643 CE. In 698 CE, they captured Carthage thus ensuring their political influence in all of northern Africa around the Mediterranean. Arabs did not move into the region until much later but tried to control it at the time with language and the Islamic religion. The Arabs began to invade Africa in large numbers from 749 CE when they settled in Alexandria, Egypt. They were mistakenly seen as African cousins and were welcomed as saviours from the oppressive rule of the Byzantium (Graeco-Roman domination.) The Arabs did not directly force their religion on the African Egyptians at first, that followed later, but unlike Christianity, Islam could not be translated into local languages.

With the Africans, looking for something to replace their banned traditional religion, and imposed Graeco-Roman Christianity, literacy in Arabic soon spread, and assisted by inter-marriages and Christian apostasy, (the reverse was punishable by death in Islam) to gain relief from taxation, Islam quickly became the religion of the land.

Although the Qur'an does not distinguish between races, there is a strong legacy of racism against Africans from early Islam because the language, traditions and customs of the Arabs supports the down grading of the African race. Dr. Azumah in his book: The Legacy of Arab-Islam in Africa provides several examples of Islam’s hatred of Blacks. There is the example in the hadith in which an Ethiopian woman laments her racial inferiority to Muhammad, who consoles her by saying, "In Paradise, the whiteness of the Ethiopian will be seen over the stretch of a thousand years."

Another hadith quotes Muhammad thus: "Do not bring black into your pedigree." In fact, the Arabic word for slave, “Abd,” became equated with Africans and Blacks with the advent of Islam. Osama Bin Laden, in a discussion with the Sudanese-American novelist, Kola Boof, in Morocco in 1996 said, “when next you meet an Arab, you should ask what is the Arabic word for slave, you’ll discover that the words are the same “abeed.” Which is why, when an Arab looks at a black African, what he sees is a slave.”

Muhammad owned and sold Black slaves. In fact, he ordered and built the pulpit of his mosque with African slave labour. The Qur'an encourages sex with female slaves in several places. Classical Islamic law allows a light-skinned Muslim man to marry a Black woman, but a Black Muslim man is restricted from marrying a light-skinned woman. As the literature of the time put it, "only a whore prefers blacks; the good woman will welcome death rather than being touched by a black man.”

So interwoven is slavery with Islam that Islams’ holiest city, Mecca (site of the Haj pilgrimage), was a slave trading capital. Quoting Azumah again, up until the 20th century, Mecca served as the gateway to the Muslim world for slaves brought out of Africa. "It became a custom for pilgrims to take slaves for sale in Mecca or buy one or two slaves while on Haj as souvenirs to be kept, sold or given as gifts."

Muslim Arab and Persian literature depicts Blacks as "stupid, untruthful, vicious, sexually unbridled, ugly and distorted, excessively merry and easily affected by music and drink.” Nasir al-Din Tusi, a famous Muslim scholar said of Blacks: "The ape is more capable of being trained than the Negro.” Ibn Khaldun, an early Muslim thinker, writes that Blacks are "only humans who are closer to dumb animals than to rational beings."

Ibn Sina (Avicenna 980–1037), Arab’s most famous and influential philosopher/scientist in Islam, described Blacks as “people who are by their very nature slaves.” He wrote: “All African women are prostitutes, and the whole race of African men are abeed (slave) stock.” He equated Black people with “rats plaguing the earth.” Ibn Khaldum, an Arab historian stated that “Blacks are characterized by levity and excitability and great emotionalism,” adding that “they are every where described as stupid.”

al-Dimashqi, an Arab pseudo scientist wrote, “the Equator is inhabited by communities of blacks who may be numbered among the savage beasts. Their complexion and hair are burnt and they are physically and morally abnormal. Their brains almost boil from the sun’s heat…..” Ibn al-Faqih al-Hamadhani painted this no less horrid picture of black people, “…..the zanj (the blacks) are overdone until they are burned, so that the child comes out between black, murky, malodorous, stinking, and crinkly-haired, with uneven limbs, deficient minds, and depraved passions…..”

Arabs’ attitude to blacks derives from Genesis’ racist fiction of the three sons of Noah – Ham, Japheth and Shem. Arabs claim that “the accursed Ham was the progenitor of the black race; that Japheth begat the full-faced, small eyes Europeans, and that Shem fathered the handsome of face with beautiful hair Arabs,” of course.

After the Arabs had conquered Egypt and shortly after Muhammad’s death, they began demanding Nubian slaves from the south. This continued for 600 years. Dominated African kingdoms were forced to send on a regular basis, tributes of slaves to the Arab ruler in Cairo. From as early as the 6th century CE, they had developed slavery supply networks out of Africa, from the Sahara to the Red Sea and from Ethiopia, Somalia and East Africa, to feed demands for slaves all over the Islamic world and the Indian Ocean region. The African male slaves were castrated and used as domestic servants or to work the Sahara salt deposits or on farms all over the Islamic world.

The African female servants were continuously raped before being sold to households to be used as sex labour. Of springs from the illicit encounters were largely destroyed as unworthy to live. Between 650 CE and 1905 CE, over 20, 000,000 African slaves had been delivered through the Tans-Sahara route alone to the Islamic world. Dr. John Alembellah Azumah in his book: The Legacy of Arab-Islam in Africa estimates that over 80 million more died en-route. A text from Dr. Azumah books, provides this quote from a Zanzibar observer about the travails of African slaves en-route to slave markets around the Arabic world.

“As they filed past, we noticed many chained together by the neck... The women, who were as numerous as the men, carried babies on their backs in addition to a tusk of ivory or other burden on their heads... It is difficult to adequately describe the filthy state of their bodies; in many instances not only scarred by [the whip], but feet and shoulders were a mass of open sores... half-starved ill-treated creatures who, weary and friendless, must have longed for death.”

A Muslim herdsman, in Dr. Azumah’s book described the fate of those who became too ill or too weak to continue the journey as follows: “We speared them at once! For, if we did not, others would pretend they are ill in order to avoid carrying their loads. No! We never leave them alive on the road; they all know this custom.”

When asked who carries the ivory when a mother gets too tired to carry both her baby and the ivory, the herdsman replied, "She does! We cannot leave valuable ivory on the road. We spear the child and make her burden lighter.”

Between 9th and 10th centuries, several millions of Zanjs (Black) slaves were imported from Zanzibar to Lower Iraq where they constituted more than half the total population and worked to clear saline lands for irrigation and to cultivate sugar. The African slaves were transported through Mombasa, Zanzibar and the Sudan. More millions of African slaves were involved in the Islamic experience on the East African route than in the West African/Sahara route. At first, they were used largely for military purposes then as domestic servants, concubines or eunuchs, in affluent Muslim households. In Northern Africa, many became galley slaves, and in the Persian Gulf, pearl divers, port labourers, sailors, or date farmhands. Some notable Africans from the Arab slavery experience included the Nubian eunuch, Abu I-Misk Kufur, who became regent of Egypt in the 10th century, and Sidi Badr, who briefly seized the throne of Bengal in the 1490s. There was also the 17th century great African Muslim general, Mails Ambar, who led the resistance of the Deccans against the Mughals. A distinctive African community has survived culturally in a place called Jiruft in Iran.

With the death of Askia Muhammad, the Emperor of Songhai, in 1528 CE, Songhai Empire started falling apart. This was the opportunity Ahmad al-Mansur, the Emperor of Morocco had been waiting for to conquer Western Sudan after his Spanish humiliation. He took his time to plan his invasion and when he felt ready in 1591 CE, he sent an army of some four thousand musketeers under the leadership of a Spanish mercenary officer called Judar Pasha. The army crossed the Sahara and was on the border of Songhai before serious attention was given to it. Songhai’s ruler, Askia Ishak II, called up a superior number of army but relying on traditional weapons. The two armies met on April 12, 1591, at a small town called Tondibi, about fifty miles from the capital city of Gao. Inspite of the brave stand of the Songhai army, the Moroccan soldiers overwhelmed them and moved into the country to wreck havoc.

Prof. Clarke informs us that: “The Moroccan invasion of Songhai and eventually, other nations of the Western Sudan was made all the more tragic because in most cases it was Muslim against Muslim. The invaders from North Africa and their European mercenary troops did not spare any one, not man, woman or child. They pitilessly slew the now demoralized citizens who cried out to them; we are Muslims, we are your brothers in religion. The war brought no honour to either side and in the years that followed, an appreciation of African intellectual and material contribution to Spain and the other nations of the Mediterranean sphere was lost from the respectful commentary of human history.”

The mid 18th century saw the growth of Islamic Tariqa, an aggressive form of religious worship intolerant of traditional or other religions, culture or customs. Tariqa had two divisions, Tijaniyya and Qudiriyya, and were usually led locally by charismatic, learned and well-travelled clerics, determined to purify and cleanse fellow Muslims and conquer non-believers through the jihad (holy war.)

Usman Dan Fodio of Sokoto (Northern Nigeria) and Umar Ibn Said Tall of Tukolor (Western Sudan) were two of such leaders who started out as reformers and ended as rulers of large tracks of land and people. Many African Muslim leaders have used the rhetoric of jihad to capture power for themselves. When the Yoruba leaders in western Nigeria were fighting each other for supremacy in the 1820s because of the breakdown of Oyo kingdom, jihad leaders invited from Northern Nigeria to intervene, grabbed the leadership of northern Yoruba land instead. Their advance southwards, “to dip the Koran into the sea,” as they called it, was only stopped after a hard fight at the edge of the forest into southern Yoruba land.

Samori Toure used jihad to take over control of a large portion of the Upper Niger region in the 1870s and 1880s. In 1881, Muhammad Ahmad, having conquered eastern Sudan, declared himself the Madhi only to be succeeded after his death by another Muslim leader, Khalifa Abdallahi. Rabih, after taking over leadership of Central Sudan (i.e., south-west of Darfur) in 1893, advanced westwards to take control of Bornu in Nigeria from another Muslim leader who had himself dethroned the ancient Saifawa Dynasty founded in the 8th century CE. By the end of the 19th century CE, nearly all of Sudan from the Nile to the Atlantic was under Muslim leaders.

The chaos and devastation that followed the invasions finally set up Africa for the intense Islamic and European slave trade that followed. As the Muslim conquest and religion spread throughout North Africa and across the Sahara into West Africa, so did Arab hunger to enslave the Africans increase.

This trade in African slaves, begun by the Arabs, went on uninterrupted from the 6th century CE, to the 19th century CE, softening Africa militarily, culturally, economically, socially and politically, for the joint European and Arab onslaught on African people and economy, from the 15th century CE.

Arabs were the principal raiders and middle men for the Atlantic slave trade that decimated populations in West African. In the late 18th century CE, with most of the slave trade along the West African coast dominated by Christians, the bulk of the Arab slave trade shifted to Zanzibar, conquered then by Omani Arabs. Omani Sultan-Seyyid Said, an Arab, as the new ruler of Zanzibar, expanded the business in slavery and the trade in Ivory considerably in 1840, by re-opening and developing old established routes into the interior, to the Great Lakes and the Congo. While retaining some slaves to staff their expanding clove plantations in Zanzibar and neighbouring Pemba, they as usual, exported the great majority of their African slaves. Omani Arabs, as the Sultan’s invaders were known, raided villages, killing and maiming thousands of people in the interior of the African continent, to capture and sell some 20,000 of them yearly at their notorious Zanzibar slave market. From there, slaves were sold and cargoed all over the Mediterranean, Europe, the Persian Gulf, and Asia. Those destined for Sindh in Pakistan, for instance, first arrived in the Omani port of Muscat from where they were shipped to Karachi. Some reached Sindh through owner-to-owner transactions, originating from points along the Makran coast of the present day Pakistani and Irani Baloshistans.

The African slaves involved, were mainly Swahili from areas now known as Kenya and mainland Tanzania. The Muslim African captives faired no better than their West African kith and kin enslaved by the West in the ‘New World.’ Arabs did not only start and sell African slaves from the 6th to the 19th century in the Islamic world; they were the principal raiders, merchants and middle men for the Atlantic slave trade. In fact, even now, hundreds of years later, millions of African settler slaves are still being discriminated against and treated as the scum of the earth (untouchables) in Pakistan, India, Iran, Iraq, and all the Muslim states of Asia, the Persian Gulf, and Northern Africa.

Expansion of Western influence all over Africa, especially after the European partition in 1884 CE, tended to restrict Islam to purely missionary activities. During the period of sharing influence with the West over the direction of African destiny, Islam did not suffer the disadvantage of Christianity’s link with the conqueror regimes and so was able to consolidate and expand. By the 19th century, for example, 65%- 90% of the Swahili Moslem population of Zanzibar was enslaved, close to 90% on the Kenyan coast and in Madagascar was enslaved and in Ghana, 30% of the African Muslims were enslaved. Since the dawn of flag independence in Africa from the 1960s, it has been business as usual with regular threats of Jihad. Several African youths are being recruited into guerrilla activities after training in Libya, or deceived with promises of better wages, and smuggled out of Africa to the Arab world, particularly to Lebanon and Afghanistan, to work as domestic servants, behind iron walls of seclusion, deprivation, abject misery, and poverty.

Arab enslavement of Black Africans continues to this day in the Muslim world, particularly in the Sudan, Niger, and Mauritania. To admit that it is a mistake would be to admit the fallibility of the Qur'an and bring its divine origin into question. Even today, Muslims act as if Islamic slavery was a favor done to the millions of unfortunate men, women and children who were forcibly uprooted from their native lands and sent to lives of sexual and mental servitude deep in the Islamic world.

Arab imperialism is worse than European imperialism, only that the latter is less subtle and more widespread. Europeans relatively, have some conscience, not much, but they are, at least, slightly more tolerant of dissent than the Arabs. Europeans did not completely destroy African cultures. Our history and religions yes, while our cultures and traditions were largely derided as primitive and banned, ignored or marginalized. In all areas conquered by Islam, the natives lost their ethnic names, religions, and peculiar way of life, to those of their Arab masters. The slaves or the religiously colonized Muslims are left bare, without a past or future of their own, a worse form of slavery and emasculation.

The Arabs stripped us totally of everything, our history, religions, cultures, names, languages and traditions. Their religion overwhelmed our cultures and traditions wherever they conquered us, to the extent that Africans in Arab governed states today, no longer bear their original African names, nor do they remember their history. They cannot even recall that they were Black, independent and thriving communities, before the Arabs colonized them. They cannot imagine that they were the original settlers and masters of the entire Arab world. All African natives in Arab governed countries, think that Allah ordained their inferior status to the Arabs.

Egypt is still so intimidated by its glorious Black African past that its Arab government would not allow thorough research into Egypt’s past. President Gamal Abdel Nasser falsified Egyptian history when he declared Egypt an Arab Republic. Anwar Sadat was forced to divorce his Black wife, denounce his Black children and marry a light-skin cousin before becoming Egypt’s President. Egyptian authorities refused to allow American film makers to make a film on the life of Anwar Sadat in Egypt on the ground that the actor chosen for Sadat’s role was Black.

When Morocco left the OAU in 1984, it aspired to become a member of the European Union. In Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, Mauritania and the rest of the Arab world, Africans are treated as the scum of the earth. They are second-class citizens at the very best in their own countries. Blacks in these countries cannot aspire to positions of respect or authority. There are hardly Africans in high government positions in Arab governed African countries. Like Brazil, which is just as racially cruel against their Black natives, there is no legislation favouring slavery (except in Mauritania.) It is simply a way of life that’s all. Blacks do not really exist or at best are not humans.

Mauritania left the Economic Community of West African States to join the union formed by the Arab North African States. A few years ago, Mauritania sacked all Black natives from their civil service positions. Black Mauritanians protest their plight to the African Union (AU) without receiving attention, because AU Black leaders fear offending their Arab colleagues in the AU. In Mauritania, they have had to declare an end to slavery six times in this century alone, and still nothing has changed for the captive majority African natives. African slavery is still in their statute books. African slavery in Mauritania is what the on going quarrel between Mauritania and Senegal is about. The quarrel forced Black African refugees to pour across the border from Mauritania into Senegal. In Algeria, Arabs throw stones at Black people, including diplomats, in markets and other public places.

To quote Prof. Clarke, “Arabs always act as though they are not in Africa. Once when I was visiting Egypt, I told my Egyptian Arab host to get a cab ready for the next morning that I was going to Kenya. So you are going to Africa to visit your people? We got no diseases here, why are you leaving us?” the host asked. Across the Red Sea, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Blacks are treated worse than animals after using their life’s savings to go there on pilgrimage. Hundreds of Blacks who have lived all their lives in Saudi Arabia are being repatriated daily after loosing an arm or a leg for some minor or trumped up offense and without regard for their comfort, welfare or rights. Racism towards Black Muslims in Saudi Arabia is so strong it makes one wonder if making pilgrimage to Mecca should be one of the five pillars of the Muslim faith, and why Blacks bother to be Muslim.

Col. Gadhafi saw vicious White racism in the tragic death in August 1997, of Princess Diana of Wales, the mother of a future king of England, and her Arab lover. What no one remembered to ask Gadhafi was whether he himself was disposed to allowing any daughter of his to marry even the richest Black man in the world let alone a Black Libyan. If one were to ask Gadhafi why Africans are not high up in his government, he might balk that all Libyans are Africans. In that case, one should go and find out the truth for oneself in the poor sections of town. One would be shocked by the plight of our African kith and kin that constitute the bulk of the population in oil rich Libya and other Northern African countries similarly afflicted with Arab racism. While pretending to champion pan-African interest, he is busy deporting Black immigrants.

On 9 May, 1997, in flagrant defiance of a UN embargo on flights in and out of Libya, Col. Gadhafi invaded Nigeria with his planes carrying 1,000 members of his rag-tag army, plus 500 journalists. They strategically occupied the Kano airport and his other reception facilities, with the connivance of the Nigerian Muslim dictator host. The purpose was to launch a jihad in supposedly religiously secular Nigeria, or at least precipitate a serious schism between the predominantly Moslem north of the country and the Christian and animist south. Right now the Moslem world is trying to use ‘Sharia’ to dismember Nigeria. Pakistan, Libya and Saudi Arabia, to name a few, have pumped substantial funds into Zamfara, the first of Nigeria’s Sharia states, to start the process of Islamizing, (or at least trigger mayhem and civil war) in Nigeria as in Sudan.

No nation in Africa has suffered more in the hands of the Arabs than Ethiopia. It has been going on since Arabs first invaded Africa in the 7th century CE. Recently, with Libya supporting the people of Eritrea, they destroyed the basic structure of Ethiopia, to cut her from the sea and weaken this section of Africa, and eventually all of Africa, for further Arabization. They did this mercilessly with religion.

In the last 38 years, Gadhafi at one time or the other, tried to force Libya’s unification with Egypt, Algeria etc., and has continued the effort since with Sudan. He forcibly annexed the Auzon Strip from Chad, and sponsored destabilization in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Mali, Cote d’ Ivoire, Niger, etc in pursuance of his Arabization of Africa policy, laced with inordinate imperial personal ambition. In 1998, his strategy got a fillip with the founding of his community of Sahel-Savannah States (CEN – SAD) which he was hoping to use to control the envisaged African Union (AU.) The CEN – SAD, at the moment, ropes in 25 African states from West, East, and Central Africa, and includes Senegal, Cote d’Ivore, Chad, Sudan, Somalia, Comoro Islands etc. Most of these unsuspecting African countries were stable until they joined CEN – SAD.

Col. Muammar Gadhafi pushed desperately for a United States of Africa government to be approved, set up, and launched right there and then, at the 9th ordinary Session of the Assembly of the heads of states of the African Union (AU) held in July 2007, in Accra, Ghana. He has heightened his Arabization policy pursuit at the AU level since 2001, pretending to be promoting the Pan-African agenda of Kwame Nkrumah. Chinweizu, the renowned scholar, described Gadhafi’s Arab-Black Africa government plan at the time, “as unification of nigger monkey with python.” Arabs themselves divide Africa into North Africa and sub-Saharan Africa to instigate a division and as long as the invaders continue to occupy our land and treat us as slaves in North Africa, the two segments of the continent cannot cohabit.

In a paper presented at the meeting of the Arab league in Amman, Jordan, in 2001, Muammar Gadhafi spelt out the Arabization agenda against Africa in language reminiscent of Adolph Hitler’s Lebensraum, (Hitler’s sick obsession to secure a living space for political and economic expansion in Europe) for the Germans, (the superior race.) Gadhafi in his address during the Amman’s Arab conference, invited his Arab brothers outside of Africa to come to Africa in the following words. “The third of the Arab community living outside Africa should move in with the two-thirds (about 250 million) on the continent and join the African Union, which is the only space we have.”

Gadhafi’s unbridled urge in modern times to enlarge Arabia inside Africa, is a continuation of the Arab war against Africans and the Arabization of African lands that started in the 7th century CE. Arabs have since settled on one-third of Africa, pushing continuously southwards towards the Atlantic Ocean. Arabs’ racial war against Black Africa started with their occupation and colonization of Egypt between 637 and 642 CE, decimating the Coptic or Black population. Between 642 and 670 CE, more Arab invaders poured into Africa and occupied areas known today as Tunisa, Libya, Algeria and Morocco, where they physically eliminated most of the native (Berber) inhabitants. The Berbers that escaped death ran westwards and southwards towards the Sahara.

In the 11th century CE, fresh Arab migrants of nomadic origin, migrated into North Africa to displace and drive the remaining pastoral Berbers deeper into the Sahara desert. With Arab consolidation and backing in Northern Africa, new waves of Arab invaders and migrants pushed deeper into the Nile banks, inhabited then by the Nilotic Shiluk, and continued all the way down to where Dueim stands today, belonging then to the Dinka and Furnawi autochthons. The entire territory was known at the time as Bilad as-Sudan (the Arabic for land of the Blacks) and currently includes the Republic of Sudan.

Continuing with their Arabization of African land policy through elimination, displacement, separation, marginalization and suppression, the Arab invaders of Bilad as-Sudan, over the passage of time, decimated the population of (the Nilotic Shiluk, Dinka and Furnawi autochthons) owners of the land, and pushed to restrict the rest waiting for elimination to Darfur area and the South of the country, which the Arab invaders are now intent on taking from the native Black Africans. This is the genesis of the war in Sudan. It is a racial war. The Arabs want the Republic of Sudan, which by land mass is the largest country in Africa, to be an entirely Arab state, by exterminating the Black native population gradually to the last person.

The war in Sudan is our modern day Haiti war in terms of Black liberation, and our recent fight against apartheid. Arabs are carrying out ethnic cleansing right now in Southern Sudan, with the financial support of the Arab world, particularly Libya and Saudi Arabia. China is backing them against Africa. The Janjaweed, with Sudanese and Arab governments’ backing, are trying to wipe out the Black population so as to expropriate their lands, but Africans, including Nigerians, do not know where their interests should reside. The Arabs succeeded in doing the same thing in Northern Africa where the original Nubian African owners of the land have almost all been wiped out and the rest marginalized (enslaved) by their Arab invaders/settlers since 642 CE. Islamization is not the problem in Sudan because the majority Furnawi people of Darfur are Muslims. Arabs do not consider Black Muslims authentic or of consequence. At best, they concede to Blacks, the role of ordained slaves or animals, to be used as beasts of burden by the “superior Arab race.” The rule applies to all Blacks, whether Muslims or non-Muslims and whether of Nigerian (Hausa/Fulani or Yoruba extractions) Tanzanians, Ugandans, Malians or African-Americans.

A traveller in Sudan observed in 1930 that “In the eyes of the Arab rulers of Sudan, the Blackslaves were simply animals given by Allah to make life of Arabs comfortable.” In 1962, the Arab Sudanese General, Hassan Beshir Nasr, while flagging off his troops to the war front against Black Africans in South Sudan, declared: “We don’t want these Blackslaves…….what we want is their land.”

A coalition of 50 charities in Darfur, Sudan, published a study in mid December, 2008, confirming what the world already knew that the Janjaweed and the Sudanese army, with the backing of their government, during joint or individual attacks, raped, tortured and killed Sudanese Africans and razed their villages to repopulate them with Arab nomads. They rounded up and abducted escapees from hide-outs in the bush, and at other times raided refugee camps to kidnap Africans as sex and labour slaves, working them to the bones as domestic and farm labour. The army flew their captives in planes to Khartoum at night and shared them among soldiers, like you allocate bags of commodities, and used them as sex and domestic servants. Kidnapped victims interviewed, said their captors told them that ‘they were not human beings and that they were there to serve them.’ In the five years between 2003 and 2008, over 300,000 Sudanese Africans were killed, 100,000 abducted and 2.7 million rendered homeless refugees, with their land appropriated by Arabs. The Khatoum government admitted 14,000 kidnaps. You can imagine what happened when the world turned a blind eye on Sudan, in the twenty years between 1983 when the conflict began, and 2003. You have to ask yourself what African leaders are doing in AU with Arabs. Arabs are Africans’ mortal foes.

Al Qaeda’s bombing of the American Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, left 260 Black civilians that included 12 Americans, dead. Over 4,000 Kenyans and Tanzanians were wounded. A remorseless top Arab journalist justified the attack by quoting Stalin: “You can’t make an omelet without breaking eggs.”

Modern Ghana : Arabs' Mortal Hatred and Enslavement of the Black Race

Also from Modern Ghana is an exploration of Black aversion to homosexuality, essentially a plea for tolerance in the end.

Obama and Clinton should not shove homosexuality down our throats

President Obama and Hilary Clinton should not kill the homosexuality debate in Uganda by making endless phone calls threatening our president when they also don't believe in this awkward behavior. Under Reagan administration, some of his people had strong anti-homosexuality feelings. Homos were believed to be the major spreaders of HIV/AIDS in USA. That's why Bush senior proposed mandatory testing of homos when he was still VP to Reagan. Actually, Bush implemented mandatory HIV testing in some govt institutions when he later became the president. Some of Reagan's friends were anti-homo but at least they were allowed to express themselves. Let Ugandans also be allowed to express themselves freely without any foreign intervention.

Sexual orientation is “behavior”, since one can be lesbian or gay and later decide to sleep with the opposite sex. Homosexuality isn't a completely self defeating mutation. Homosexuals can in fact reproduce. They just don't like it. Some become active homosexuals after reproducing, some before. There is also no conclusive scientific evidence that homosexuality is a natural thing.

My argument about Africa is that these things are not generally part of us despite the fact that there was an element of this behavior among some people in our history. Even up to now, most white people are forced by the law or 'liberalism' to accept homos in their society but they privately don't support them. For instance, Hilary opposed same sex unions in Newyork and it was an issue during her campaigns in NY as a senator. She later backed out of it because it was damaging her campaign but she did not support this behavior at first. I remember Hilary saying that she would have voted for the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 because marriage “has always been between a man and a woman.” This legislation was signed into law by her husband(Bill Clinton) and it denies federal recognition of same-sex “marriage” and allows states to ignore those licensed elsewhere. I also read somewhere that it's illegal to be gay in Texas though im not so sure how the law is now. So why is Clinton forcing homos down our throats if she herself found it a weird behavior.

Homosexuality used to be treated as a mental illness in the USA and Britain throughout the 1970s and 1980s and doctors used to use a method called “aversion” therapy to help these people. The World Health Organization only removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses in 1992. So you can understand why even the people in the west were so rigid about this 'LIFE STYLE' till when it got out of control. We should not let this situation get out of control in Uganda or Africa.

I'm surprised that some Ugandans would not feel let down when their son or daughter comes to them and say that they are gay. I don't know whether people in this category are trying to be politicians or not because its politicians who make such statements in public yet privately say different things. Anyway, just to let them know, homo marriages end up encouraging off-springs to also become gay or lesbian. For instance, the new study by two University of Southern California sociologists said that children with lesbian or gay parents show more empathy for social diversity, are less confined by gender stereotypes, and are probably more likely to explore homosexual activity themselves.

Lastly, all religions condemn homosexuality. It may have existed before religions but it does not make it right, does it ? By the way, I have no problem with homosexuality as long as it isn't pushed into the public domain or them ( homos ) start asking for special rights in Africa. I also don't support the proposed death penalty to homos since they are not hurting anyone. As long as they keep their behavior to themselves or make attempts to bring it in schools as we have been reading in newspapers then it shouldn't be a problem. Of course, I feel the same way about a heterosexual couple having sex in public though the later is natural.

Abbey Kibirige Semuwemba --- Modern Ghana

Let me be the first to hope that no-one in the forum supports the proposed death penalty for homos either.*

Thanks for posting this. I had read something similar a long time ago but many of the details had been forgotten. It does make me wonder why so many choose to ignore the bloody methods of Islam. Islam has never been about Peace.

The Curative Powers of Virginity

From a neo-fascist news-site...

When Burmese migrant Ngun Chai sold his 13-year-old daughter into prostitution for $114, his wife, La, had one regret — they didn’t get a good price for her.

I should have asked for 10,000 baht ($228),” La Chai said. “He robbed us.”

She was angry that the agent who bought her eldest child, Saikun, in 1999 took her to Bangkok, some 460 miles away, rather than a nearby city as promised. It did not concern La Chai that Saikun would be forced to have sex with as many as eight men a day.

Ngun Chai earns about $100 a year selling bamboo bowls in the local market and lives in a thatched hut in Pa Tek village on the outskirts of Mae Sai, a bustling town of 80,000 inhabitants on Thailand’s northern most border with Burma. Tensions run high between the two nations’ armies and occasionally lead to the exchange of gunfire across the muddy waters of the Mae Sai River separating the two nations.

But the occasional violence has done nothing to hinder the town’s two main trades — drugs and daughters.

Though the smuggling of vast quantities of heroin and amphetamines from Burma and China through Thailand has given the region its infamous tag — the Golden Triangle — it’s the explosion in the recruitment of girls into the lucrative Thai sex industry that has put this border town on the map.

Last December, Mae Sai was high on the agenda at the Second World Congress against Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children, held in Yokohama, Japan, where national governments and child protection agencies met to exchange information and review policies.

There are no reliable statistics on the number of children working in the sex industry worldwide, but the lowest figure cited is 1 million. The United Nations Children’s Fund estimates that one-third of sex workers in Southeast Asia are 12 to 17 years of age.

Every year, hundreds of young girls from Mae Sai are spirited away to brothels in Bangkok, where they feed the insatiable appetite of the $20 billion commercial sex industry, according to the International Labor Organization.

The Development and Education Program for Daughters and Communities (DEPDC), a nongovernmental organization in Mae Sai that works with local girls who are at risk of being sold, estimates that of Pa Tek’s 800 families, 7 in every 10 have sold at least one daughter into the trade.

With prices varying from $114 to $913 — the latter figure equal to almost six years’ wages for most families — parental bonds in impoverished households are easily broken. In fact, child prostitution is so established that many brothel agents live in the village, and are often friends or relatives of the family from whom they buy the children.

“Agents will come to the village with orders to fill so people in Bangkok –
Thai men and foreigners, mostly Europeans — can order girls like they order pizza,” said DEPDC Director Sompop Jantraka. “If they want a girl with thin hips and big breasts, the agents will come up here and find her. They always deliver.”

The agents also approach the thousands of girls from Burma, Laos and southern provinces of China who cross the border annually. Many wind up working as prostitutes in Singapore, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and Australia.

But few villages in the region have contributed as many daughters as Pa Tek. Populated by Burmese immigrants who have crossed the border illegally to escape poverty and persecution by their nation’s military leaders, most are allowed by the Thai government to live and work in the border area with no legal status. Many work as agricultural laborers and earn less than $160 a year. The depths of poverty make the area easy pickings for brothel agents, or “aunties.”

Virginity is highly prized. Fueling the demand for young girls is ignorance about HIV-AIDS transmission and myths about the curative powers of virginity.

Some brothel customers — especially those from Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Middle East — believe a child is unable to transmit disease and therefore less risky for sex. In reality, children are physically more prone to bleeding, infection and disease, said Marshall of the United Nations. Somporn Khempetch, coordinator of the Child Protection and Rights Center in Mae Sai, said 50 girls in Pa Tek had died last year from AIDS.

This is one of the few organizations i promote

http://www.freetheslaves.net/

According to them there are more humans now living in slavery, most as sexually-abused/used children, than at any ay point in history...

I sometimes amuse myself with those who rant on about their ancestors enslavement in America two hundred years ago. I ask them "If you care so much about the slaves, centuries ago - why don't you care about those living in slavery today?"

i believe that the figure is that there are over 100, 000 slaves are being held captive here in America, virtually all of them forced into prostitution, of course...

With the Moonlight turning the Apples all to Silver

I'm going to say, I wouldn't care for the 1920s much, apart from serving in a Freicorps at the beginning, and maybe later in Royalist intrigues in Eastern Europe to restore Otto to the Hapsburg Empire and Wilhelm to the Hohenzollern; and I definitely am not fun enough to find the Bright Young Things attractive. Yet, to a meagre extent, they had some sense of style.

There were scavenger hunts that involved high-speed car chases around London, there was a hoax art opening for an invented painter named Bruno Hat, a mock wedding, a "Bath and Bottle Party" thrown at an indoor swimming pool featuring an American jazz band shipped in just for the occasion, a Mozart Party at which guests dressed in 1760s costumes, feasted on dishes from a menu that had been served at the court of Louis XIV and danced by candlelight, an Urban Dionysus at which one partygoer, dressed as Europa, rode in on a bull, a White party, at which all partygoers dressed in white and danced on a white dance floor in the midst of an orchard "with the moonlight turning the apples all to silver."

Washington Times Books

K.... Well, things are a bit different now; even if --- and really the old girls who started Girton College and all the other institutions for extending higher education to females undoubtedly anticipated this outcome --- we have reached the apex of educational excellence, our manners have dropped a bit.

This is actually very funny, but as the transcripts are in image form I can't copy many extracts, so one must go to The Smoking Gun's Report to savour the details.

Sorority Girls Gone Wild

MAY 24--For the second time in recent weeks, a chapter of the Pi Beta Phi sorority is being accused of drunkenly trashing a facility during a formal dance.

At a March 6 party sponsored by the group's Ohio University chapter, attendees engaged in sex acts, used plates as "missiles" during food fights, vomited on carpets, defecated in urinals, and tried to tear off the clothes of a female bartender, according to a letter written by the director of the West Virginia art center where the formal was held. In her April 6 letter to the sorority, a copy of which you'll find below, Abby Hayhurst, head of the Parkersburg Art Center, reported that catering staff witnessed "a couple engaging in sexual congress, while surrounded by a cheering throng," and that a bathroom sink was broken as a result of "one of your members and her date attempting to have sexual relations on it, an act which was witnessed by the event's caterer, who walked in on them."

The art center, which reported the damage to the Parkersburg Police Department, is seeking about $47,000 from the sorority, which contends that the art center has exaggerated its damages.

Last month, the Pi Beta Phi chapter at Miami University was suspended after a wild April 9 spring formal at a lakefront Ohio lodge. In a letter detailing damages and the sorority's wild behavior, lodge owner Lyndsay Rapier-Phipps noted that the students were "totally obliterated and behaving like immature children."

Some highlights:

Four people, plus a commercial cleaning company, spent three full work days attempting to clean up the mess, which included urinals fulled with feces and trash, piles of trash, puddles of vomit, and thirteen instances of chewing gum ground into the carpet.

Each of the tables was decorated with a silk pin-tucked tablecloth and an arrangement of silk flowers. Five of the tablecloths are ruined by spilled food, liqour, and what is apparently vomit. Of the one hundred silk flowers ( at $7 per stem ) in use in the arrangements, 62 have neen pulled off their stems and the petals shredded and added to the detritous on the floor.

Immediately upon their arrival we were informed by the bus drivers that the students were acting belligerent during the ride down and demanded for them to pull over to let them urinate on the side of the road. When the bus drivers did pull over, they were then stopped by a Butler County sheriff.

Another Lake Lyndsay staff member, Elizabeth, observed two girls repeatedly trying to urinate into the sinks on the bathroom counter. They told her they could not wait for a stall to become available.

There were also two girls who continually vomited throughout the facility. Yvonne told them if they were not able to make it to the bathroom stall the next time they had to vomit, she would have to ask them to leave the building and wait outside for the buses.

We'll Have Won The War

The New York Times doesn't seem the place to go for humour, yet in the last few weeks there have been a couple of funny bits.

Americans generally think of their military as the greatest, strongest force that has ever existed --- this is true.

Non-Americans think of them as crude barbarians who got lucky --- which is also true, minus the 'crude' bit. Whatever faults they possess, over-thinking is the U.S. Army's Achilles' Heel.

Look at the military’s PowerPoint slide of the Afghanistan war, a labyrinth of cross-thatching lines and arrows swirling around words like INSURGENTS and COALITION CAPACITY & PRIORITIES. “When we understand this slide,” said Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, who leads the American effort in Afghanistan, “we’ll have won the war.”

[ Or you could just maintain concentration upon the ultimate aim... When you've figured out what that aim is. ]

And on the financial crisis:

At the same time, we’re learning more about the financial instruments that caused our economic collapse, and it’s now clear that “exotic,” the adjective of choice, won’t suffice. Synthetic collateralized debt obligations are impenetrable on purpose, built for maximum opacity. They’re also lethal mysteries to companies like A.I.G., an insurance firm whose supposed expertise is assessing risk. A.I.G. needed an $85 billion government loan to remain solvent.

The last two sentences are perfect.

From It's Complicated, by David Segal.

Anyway, that led to a link on the Republican senate candidacy in Connecticut by Gail Collins. As I hope is obvious I have no more interest in wrestling than in learning how car tyres are made and the initials WWE are just letters, so the engaging McMahon family are unknown to me.

Your own options are:

A) A well regarded former congressman who is a decorated Vietnam War veteran.
B) A political novice who made her fortune building up an entertainment business that specialized in blood, seminaked women and scripted subplots featuring rape, adultery and familial violence. In which the candidate, her husband and children played themselves. Also, the family yacht is named Sexy Bitch.

Well, obviously, you go for the yacht owner.

Yes, this week the Connecticut Republican Party chose Linda McMahon, the former C.E.O. of World Wrestling Entertainment, to be their Senate candidate. Her main opponent, the former Representative Rob Simmons, packed up his war medals and went home.
“You can’t argue with arithmetic,” he told The New London Day.

The math in question is $50 million, the amount McMahon claimed she was prepared to spend on her campaign. Connecticut has just under two million registered voters, so maybe she’ll just invite everybody in the state to a nice dinner at Red Lobster.

So far this season, the Republicans have offered two new models of their future. One is the Tea Party vision, in which outsiders full of spirit and excitement overthrow the old order. In North Carolina, there was so much spirit and excitement that voters gave the top spot in a Congressional primary to a former drug addict who, according to court documents, once referred to the United States government as the Antichrist and claimed to have personally located the Ark of the Covenant.

Good enough for me...

“People call Linda McMahon a C.E.O., job creator, business leader. But I just call her Mom,” says daughter Stephanie in a much, much repeated TV ad. W.W.E. fans all remember Stephanie from the day she slugged Mom in a spat over the Wrestlemania fight card, but we are not going there anymore.

That's kinda sickening. 'I just call her Mom'. Have these people no shame ?

Evidently not:

Simmons distributed a video of Vince McMahon, Linda’s husband, standing in the ring and telling a weeping female wrestler to take off her clothes, get down on her knees and “dammit, bark like a dog.” Nobody paid attention..

Intrigued, I looked this up in case it was mere lies. I mean, this would be enough to close the doors of polite society to Mr. McMahon and all the little McMahons, and possibly cause folk to hiss at him in the streets like snakes in heat.

Nope, it's real, and there's video --- which I did not watch --- to prove it.

“Get on your hands and knees like a dog! Get on your hands and knees like a dog, okay! I used to have a female dog and that bitch did everything I told her to, NOW DAMMIT, GET DOWN, GET DOWN!”

“YEAH, THAT’S IT! CRAWL AROUND THE RING LIKE A DOG! YOU’RE SORRY! YOU’RE SORRY FOR MR. MCMAHON! YEAH, YOU’RE SORRY”

“Now then, I want you to tell me in dog language just how sorry you are! Okay? Yeah, tell me in dog language! Speak, Trish, speak! YEAH, BARK LIKE A DOG!”

“I’ve seen you on all fours before, they haven’t. Y’know what, Trish? I’ve seen you in other ways and they haven’t.”

“If you’re really sorry, I’m wondering what color panties you’re wearing tonight, Trish!”

“If you’re reeeaaalllyyy, reeeeeeealllly sorry, take your skirt off, AND TAKE IT OFF NOW!”

“Are you sorry enough now Trish? Are you sorry enough for Mr. McMahon? You know what? I don’t think so! No, you’re not sorry enough for Mr. McMahon, so everybody that’s watching at home, I’m warning you now, everybody that’s in this arena, turn your back if you don’t want to see this. You’re sorry! Oh yeah, you’re sorry! TAKE YOUR BRA OFF AND TAKE IT OFF NOW! TAKE IT OFF, TRISH!”

Ring Psychology

I truly hope Mrs. McMahon and Mr. McMahon both win seats to the Senate and become a future presidential husband/wife team like the egregious pair of useless has-beens, the Clintons.

Vae Victis

It's important to differentiate what I say from what others are saying, so as give them their rightful credit and distance oneself from mistakes they may make in grammar or thought.

I have a request. Can you try to summarize the whole thread in one sentence? Or does this "What The Baby Ravens Tell Me..." really show what this is all about?

*blinks* I did. Post 42, three posts above your question.

Anyway, it's a bloglet, showcasing amusing stuff mentioned on the web. How difficult is that ? I happen to think the past ---- Aztecs having a grand cannibal feast on 20,000 slaughtered, exquisitely funny when we are supposed to admire their goddamned boring civilisation; whilst a future which includes Senator Mrs. McMahon passing laws and providing moral guidance to a confused nation is equally enticing.

[ Google seems to indicate that even many Americans are unsure what a senator actually does, apart from give speeches to other senators; but the only important thing in the end is that they get $174k a year for their work, but most of them, as with Mrs. McMahon or Murderous Old Teddie, are so splendidly wealthy that this sum is picayune to them --- if not to those who voted for them: there's a slight disconnect between the governing and governed classes even in the best of ideal democracies that is the USA. ]

Sometimes the obvious is just that. This:

All know, or should, the duties of the two big boys in surveillance and reporting; however there are also little ravenlets who are part of the family, permanently children who strut and caw small amusing incidents.

I've stopped blogging for a while, but these snippets wouldn't be worth writing up for a blog; so this is a bloglet merely to record small delights found on the web at --- almost --- random.

I enjoy this.

God's Unfolding Plan

Many Orthodox Jews and Fundamentalist Christians actively support the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem. The Christians who agitate for this restoration do so because they believe it is God's will that sacrificial religion be restored. They see the resumption of Temple worship as a sure sign of the Second Coming of Christ.

And those Jewish people who are anxious to see the resumption of Temple worship believe that ever since the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, almost two thousand years ago, God has been awaiting the resumption of animal sacrifice.

Both Christians and Jews avoid the reality of what actually constitutes "Temple worship" by referring to it euphemistically. One Christian writer, typical of others, writes "The [Jewish] people will once again participate in the glories of temple worship...a deep and satisfying spiritual life will be the portion of the nation in that day."
(Ryrie, THE FINAL COUNTDOWN. Emphasis added)

Another Christian spokesman declares that "Some way, somehow, the Temple will be rebuilt [because] prophecy foretells the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple and the reinstitution of sacrifices prescribed in the Law of Moses."
(Rosen/Massie, OVERTURE TO ARMAGEDDON)

And among Jewish people, there are prescribed prayers for the restoration of sacrificial worship. "Lord Our God, look with favor on Thy people Israel their prayer. Restore worship to Thy Temple in Zion and with loving grace accept Israel's offering and prayer."
The Traditional Prayer Book for Sabbath and Festivals

When consecrating a house, this theme is repeated. "Even as we have been permitted to consecrate this house, so grant that we may together witness the dedication of thy great and holy temple in Jerusalem."
The Authorised Daily Prayer Book:Revised Edition.

In our own day, we have never been faced with the realities of sacrificial religion. To modern minds, phrases like the "holy of holies" and the "altar of the Lord" conjure up some sort of ancient, godly society in which priestly men served the Lord in His sanctuary. But the Temple was actually a slaughterhouse, and the linen vestments of the priests were stained red with the blood of their victims. And terms like the "altar of the Lord," obscure the fact that what is being talked about is the killing and butchering of helpless victims, in the name of God.

Now, almost two thousand years after this bloody worship was ended by the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple, there are large numbers of Jews and Christians who are working and praying for its restoration. Those who are committed to this cause have no compunction about the massive slaughter of animals that would take place in the name of God. But neither do they have any compunction about a massive slaughter of human beings. They believe this, too, is part of God's unfolding plan.

Fundamentalists interpret the scriptures to mean that the horrible suffering of Armageddon, described in the book of Revelation, is God's will. And like the death of sacrificial animals, they believe these deaths are to be welcomed, rather than avoided. Such people believe that cruelty and violence are the means God will use to introduce His reign of compassion and peace into the world.

They believe that God is as brutal as men, but because they also believe they will be protected from the horrors to come, they look forward to this apocalyptic reign of terror.

"Armageddon is a reality, a terrible reality [but] it sets the stage for the introduction of the king, the Lord Jesus, in power and in great glory....You know why I'm not worried? I ain't gonna be here." Jerry Falwell

"[Armageddon} can happen at any time...Pieces of flesh began to fall from their bones. Their eyeballs began to rot in their sockets. Their internal organs slowly began to turn to mush, and they fell, gushing blood, one after another. Bodies of the dead and dying were piled all over the hills and valleys surrounding Jerusalem." Pat Robertson

"Armageddon is coming. They can sign all the peace treaties they want [in the mideast]. They don't do any good. There are dark days coming. My Lord, I'm happy about it. He [Jesus] is coming again...I don't' care who it troubles. It thrills my soul. " Jimmy Swaggert.

Such testimonials to a God of brutality and violence help us to understand how Christians and Jews who are working through political means to insure that Temple sacrifices are resumed, can be so uncaring about animal beings: they are just as uncaring about human beings.
