Where's the data? I think there are too many variables. My opinion is that musical taste is completely dependent on conditioning and social environment. The only thing universal is the range of sounds that define music. Although, I did listen to rock and metal in my early teens while suffering from low self-esteem amidst other neuroses. Then I started listening to classical for personal reasons. Then I ended up with video game music for the atmosphere and nostalgia. I don't know. Damn it. Always the problem of nature vs. nurture keeps surfacing for me.

Hmm. Interesting. I think some of the personality categories they're basing it on (self-esteem, creativity, gentleness, etc) come up a little invaried in places to the extent that I wonder how much it really tells you.

Also, I think some of these genre categories are far too broad to tell you much about personality in themselves: "classical", "pop", "rock" - these are massive genres with tonnes of variance in them (and hence one would expect a variance of personalities who listen to them). And then there is the factor of personal taste and the ways in which people might mix genres, or distant strands of the same genre in unexpected ways.

For traits like creativity, I think I'd measure it in trans-genre terms. If someone listens to just the top 40 you'd expect low creativity simply because their environment is choosing their music (and hence limiting their potential expression) for them -- I'd wager people that seek out their own music and preferences are those more likely to be creative despite what genre they listen to. Hence they equate pop to low creativity and indie to high, but then I would object to them equating pop with the top 40: it's also a massively varied genre. :D

I wanted to post something like this as well. You summed up my thoughts.

I agree. The more music you listen to and the more curious you are about music, the more unique the genre tends to get. It is because of the internet that we have so many genres of music, as people are always looking for novelty for their next dopamine fix - whether it's TV series, music or porn.

I'm just going to agre with Puffy for simplicity's sake. I listen to every genre listed with the exception of pop...there's really no way to draw a useful conclusion from that.

Here are mine:

Progressive rock. Rush is my all-time favorite band (kinda obvious from my username!). IMO, its traits are especially appealing for me as an INTP - intellectual, creative, complex, and highly precise and proficient. Female Rush fans like me are on the rare side - maybe because there are so few NT women?

Heavy metal, especially progressive metal (much of which has been influenced by Rush, so it's a natural). Also power metal.

Classic rock.

Alternative/indie.

Examples of specific bands I particularly enjoy, in no particular order: Rush (of course!), Porcupine Tree, Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Korn, Tool, Dream Theater, Opeth, Katatonia, Pink Floyd, Keane, Creed, Ozzy, Disturbed, The Shins, The Killers, Breaking Benjamin, Incubus.

I also enjoy some good 80s pop, but that's mostly nostalgia. :)

This article is careless and biased for this reason; the author is only focusing on the mainstream ideas of each genre(which would make them pop, contradicting the pop section..) and ignores the differences in genre styles which can appeal to a range of emotions and personalities. And most of all it doesn't account for people who listen to more than one genre(which I'm pretty sure is a lot of people).

What genre do you prefer? I mostly listen to rock-type music (can listen to anything if i'm in the right mood though). I found this article really interesting as it seems pretty accurate what music tells about a person. Do you agree with it?

I don't agree with the article. I would say that I'm the complete opposite of what was posted regarding the genres that I like.
However, I tend to like soundtrack music; anything without lyrics really. But I just love music in general and will listen to anything and everything depending upon my mood.

Honestly, I'm pretty skeptical of any supposed link between musical taste and personality but anyway, out of the ones listed, Rock/Metal. I listen to electronic music but not neccesarily dance music, and going by the description I don't even know if they're defining indie as anything obscure or the whole sterotypical "indie sound" or whatever the term even means these days. If you're going by obscure, then a lot of the stuff I like is.

Our tastes are identical. :smoker:

However, can't help suggest this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Court_of_the_Crimson_King

The album that basically started prog rock. Essential stuff.

Basically what you said, progressive rock is a genre that would appeal to a large number of INTx people. Intricate, introspective, often quirky

It's not a popular genre, unfortunately. :(

Maybe that's why i find it hard to incorporate other people into my musical tastes.

I can't help but pointing out flaws in the presentation. Either it was not an extensive enough experiment or the personality traits were too limited.

Hardcore punk.

There's so many reasons as to why I love this genre. It isn't post-hardcore, it isn't punk rock, it isn't old school screamo, it isn't beatdown or moshcore. It isn't skramz, it isn't pop punk. It isn't any of those subgenres, even though it itself is one.
It's derived from the original core word, "hardcore", and added punk for the sound and the purpose of its music. Being in the gray area, the hardcore punk area, makes me feel safe. Like I said, there's so many reasons as to why I love this genre.

I'm straight-edge, and I'm a vegetarian. You'd think something like "hardcore punk" would make you sound like you're getting fucked up and getting in fights and causing a lot of shit to happen, but it doesn't. If anything, this genre has turned me into a better person. I feel more self-composed, I feel bold. I feel like I have control over myself, that whatever actions I do in the moments that I'm at a show could impact me for a day, a week, a month, maybe a few months.
The people, the overall community, are wonderful. We all feel the music together, it's a very emotional build. There's a lot of physical contact, in both aggressive and loving ways. They've taught me how to be hard as shit but be kind, be compassionate. I've seen some of the best shows with some of the best people that will kick my ass in the pit but pick me right back up.

The unity, that's what I'm trying to get at. The unity in the scene is amazing, there's so much affection and positive, loving vibes coming off of everyone like rays. It feels warm, I feel like I'm with my tribe. I feel so grateful to be apart of such an amazing music group. I could be having the shittiest day but then go to a show and know that someones going to make sure that I know that I'm cared about, and I know that that music will empower every feeling in me.

I have a long journey ahead of me with this music. I love to drum, I look for new music to listen to whenever I have any free time. I have a journal specifically to list shows and bands. The energy from the music keeps me glowing for days.

People say music saves lives. I don't believe this music saved my life, but I do believe it led me in the right direction of enlightenment. I can't wait to give back to this music from what it's given me.

My most favourite type of music is blues rock. I love the rhythm an epresiveness of it, as well as the powerful solos and lyrics. I also like indie rock/folk, heavy metal (pre-90s), oldies, soul, reggae (a limited selection) and classical music.

Then article you posted seems fairly accurate then.

I like all the genres listed, but rock has to be on the top of my list. I've been listening to a lot of Nirvana lately.

I don't like rap and country as much, but I do like some. I associate rap and country with lack of intelligence, which I think is why they usually disgust me.:cat:

Out of the genres listed, I like dance and classical.

More specifically, I like dance, drum & bass, ambient, dubstep, most of the 80s pop

In the last month, this is my current favorite track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gq8ai_yV3Q

Purely by number of plays, 'Sweet Sensation' by Shades of Rhythm would appear to be my all-time favorite track.

nice tastes : )

You cant pidgeonhole things like rock, punk, and metal together.

Metal is usually non vocal centric, rock is vocal centric, and punk is more about the lyrics than anything else. Thats the major flaw i see in the article.

I myself am about 20% metal and 80% edm. Though i went through a SKA and Punk phase in HS, as well as Emo/Post Hardcore. I even listened to some underground rap for awhile.

Examples
Metal: Wintersun, Satyricon, Dark Tranquility, Insomnium
EDM: Seven lions, Purity Ring, ODESZA, The Others, Nero

edit: wow, i just hardcore necro'd

I listen to pagan folk primarily as it is a very diverse field of musicians and cultures ranging from Eastern European through Persia and into Africa.

I also listen to the shoegazing genre. Not so much anymore though.

If you want a listen:

1. The Moon and the Nightspirit - Hungarian.
2. Faun - German / Celtic.
3. Trobar De Morte - Spanish.
4. Narsilion - Spanish.
5. Stellamara - Bulgarian.
6. Irfan - Bulgarian.
7. Isihia - Bulgarian.
8. Daemonia Nymphe - Greek.
9 Azam Ali - Persian.

Some are listed as world music and cross into cultural mainstream once in awhile. Though I view them by their pagan roots.

I always find that kind of classification as really arbitrary. I find there is music in, say, classical music and electronic music that are more similar to each other than other pieces of music within the "classical" genre. I feel it is more about chord progressions, melodies, structures than the types of instruments used.

For example, I like these two and I think of them as similar:

But I cannot stand Mozart and think of it as something wildly different to Vivaldi:

Hence someone saying "I like classical music" sounds like a complete joke to me

Open to all genres. Only criteria is that it has to be good of its kind. I'm also keen on lyrical content.

A good tune is always a good tune, but it's a subjective choice. A lot depends on time and place.

nope. Don't trust this guy one bit. Rock/metal? Seriously. ._ . and also why is there no electronica whatsoever, when it is one of the most musically variable genres there is.

It's more interesting if we apply human characteristics to music rather apply music to human characteristics. Saying a song has INTP traits and giving reasons why is more thought provoking and exciting than wondering what musical traits INTPs enjoy. At least to me.

Like, "How would the Ti, Ne, Si, and Fe functions manifest themselves directly through music? How do they work together, and what sounds and structure do they bring?"

my "preferred" genre changes depending on mood

i hate listing favorites, but i guess you can say industrial noise and psychedelic folk are my preferred genres...as i enjoy listening to these in a variety of different states of mind

generally my tastes err on the more experimental side of music

i like what polaris said in bronto's thread about music not having to be pretty or logical to invoke an atmosphere or meaningful audial experience. this is in line with my sentiments/experience with music as well

I'll listen to any genre of the music and/or lyrics are stimulating and/or clever. I prefer high-energy music if I'm wanting to pay attention, and low-energy if I am trying to concentrate on something.

I just wish the radio stations would play something worthwhile.

Oh I'm back here again. Might as well answer the thread title this time around. : )

Hm... give me a mood? What am I feeling?

If I wanna feed my Ni through imaginative ventures into foreign universes in my mind...
- Pretty much exclusively ambient music... which can range from IDM to Psybient, and from Doom metal to space music. Also: Metroid Prime, The Elder Scrolls, Harry Potter and the [Insert debated profession here]'s Stone... video game music definitely helps me wander the fantastical universes in my head... mostly since it gives me a guideline of what to expect since I've supposedly played these games already.
- Floydian metal/prog crap.

If I wanna feed my Fe through emotionally expressive and beautiful music...
- PsyTrance

If I wanna feed my Ti through extreme minimalism (emotional expression-wise) and complex arrangements of sounds
- Almost purely IDM.

If I need to SATISFY MY INNER BEAST :cthulhu:, yes Mister Se... the music usually considered includes...
- DOOM METAL
- BLACK METAL
- POWER METAL
- JAZZ
- Of Mice and Men
- METAL
