The Church has been on board for a long, long time. The point is that the three premises of Darwinian evolutionary theory have nothing whatsoever to say, directly, about the (original) creation of life.
And, even for those who mistake Darwinism and Big Bang cosmology (a confusion I've never been able to understand--just how does one make that kind of blunder), there's still no problem for the Church. The currently-accepted rules governing entropy and the like are not inconsistent with an omnipotent being.
I've found the die-hard atheists just as frustrating as the mushy-brained creationists, honestly.
Metaphysics, as an old professor of mine used to say, gives up precision for the sake of being able to talk about more. Unlike any of the sciences, which gives up scope of topic in order to preserve precision. I, for one, prefer metaphysics.
