I have on an off learned how to play, decently well, around 10 different instruments. Then I discovered I could sing... and that I, yes I, could write songs, with words and intruments, it has all been in my head since I was a child yet I could never understand the things that populated my mind. Now I realize these are sounds, these are words, these are ideas that need to be said, or sung. My problem is this, I have the capability to do all this, but I cannot find a way to position myself into a way of showing other people my abilities, somehow I always talk myself out of this, I want to know, am I alone in this or do others find the same things happening?

In the United States.
I'm the same with painting. I look at objects and do studies in my head about how light falls or how shapes look. Last year I discovered I could do very good characitures and two weeks ago I could do paintings. You're not alone.

maybe you should try getting drunk first, then performing.

I have ideas and realizations that could only be expressed through sound or picture as well, but I do not have enough competence with the medium to do so.

Veh. Not telling.
Hmmm... I have an almost similar experience. I can play decently up to only 4 instruments. i tried my hand at composing some music, but is having a bit of trouble doing so. When i come up with the music, it seems so vivid and alvie, but when I try to write it, it comes out kinda' wonky. Any tips? One thing different with me is that I can just sing. Sing my own songs. Improvise freely whatever I feel. The words come too. I'm glad there are people that are like me. :)

I forget how old you are. If I remember correctly you're 18-20ish. You might to be too old in my opinion and I'll tell you why. I had a friend who was INTP and picked up the bass at like 18 or something and eventually I ended up trying to get him in a band I was in. He just sat there the entire tryout and didn't play a note. I'm sure in his own world he makes some killer stuff, but I don't think he'll ever be able to collaborate. The only reason I can collaborate I think is because I started doing it young at like 15. Forming shitty shitty bands and working my way up. I'm at the point now I can show up at a tryout and learn songs on the spot etc.

I mean I could be wrong I am just talking from experience. If I were you I'd learn to use Cubase, Pro Tools or Logic. Start using a drum machine and write music to it. Eventually record vocals. You might have a start there. When I was 17 I started a band playing music I made all entirely myself. I was lucky enough to get people to play what I wrote live etc.

Improvise freely whatever I feel. The words come too. I'm glad there are people that are like me. :)

As a guitar player I have had some people who liked it when I would just record riffs. Meaning I would play guitar and record the entire jam session. It would just be me alone playing guitar obviously. I'd give it to the person and they would listen and be like this riff is good let's keep this. Other personality types actually can be good arrangers even though they aren't as creative.

Metallica used to use "riff tapes". The guitar players would record hours of riffs and they would sit and listen and decide which riffs were good and go from there. They'd write the song around the catchy riffs.

My band has two huge marker boards in our practice spot and we write arrangements down on them. Dream Theater does this, but they use huge poster boards (not comparing my band to DT in any way). It really helps because you can write down the time signature and a name of the riff. So when you look at the board you remember what riff is coming up.

As far as the just improvising thing goes, that is the best way to do it in a lot of people's opinions. Michael Romeo (guitar player from Symphony X) improvises all his solos in the studio. He thinks that if you sit down and force the solo it sounds too "contrived" and loses some of its "magic". He definitely goes back and learns the solo so he can play it live the same though.

Randy Rhoads used to record his solos in pieces. Meaning he'd record the first part and re-record it until he finally got a section he liked. He'd then have the engineer punch him in to the point RIGHT after the piece he just made until he finally had the whole solo recorded. Somehow at the end of the solo he'd have it sounding natural. Listen to the solo on Mr. Crowley and you can tell he's just piecing the solo together one piece at a time until its finally done. He didn't come up with that monster solo all in one take or in one writing session. You can tell because he comes up with melodic parts that he "shreds" and then he goes into slower longer held notes. Then after that he goes into an entire new section. If you listen you might get what I mean. Guitar players will get it.

Elton John used to give songs 1 hour to take form. If he couldn't write it in an hour it wasn't a good song.

Obviously we're nowhere near as good as those musicians I listed as far as commercial success is ever going to be, but I am just using musicians as examples that you have heard of. Of course I am not comparing myself or any of you to those big of names of musicians, just giving you an idea of how others write music. The fact of the matter is music in the mainstream is just a product to be sold.

I just realized my posts were kind of off topic. My point was to show you that you can indeed write songs. You just have to come up with a formula. INTP people are creative people and if you found a way to get your inspiration recorded you could use it. There are no rules in music and you can definitely do it. We're the ones who are capable of coming up with a completely new idea that has never been done before. Sometimes you just need help harnessing the idea and putting it into life (in the real world).

INTP people rarely get recognized in the music world because we're the ones behind the scenes. We'll never get credit.

I had completely forgotten I started this thread.

Which I was going to ask another question and found this, it is about the vocal range. The more I sing, and try harder to reach notes or whatever the technical words are, I eventually become capable of reaching a new level. Somewhat comparable to leveling up in a video game (analogy is only here to make me smile.) Is there a range limit to ones voice or are we capable of any octave or notes but there has to be exercising and such to acquire the new ranges?

@ gnome, I have been playing music, mainly guitar since I was 13. At 16 I played bass for 3 years in band and a side project with one of the drummers where we jammed out for about 3 hours daily for a year or so. It was only recently I had learned I could sing, which when I was younger say like 13-15 I knew I could but gave up because I was too shy.

I've also realized the more my lungs develop and it becomes easier to run, and breathing is easier, the more my vocal ranges increases also. So maybe I am not reaching past limits but merely strengthening my lungs and other muscles to accommodate the needs of singing and coming to my own voice.

You could get a barebones recording setup for a couple hundred dollars, put your music on the internet and watch as no one listens to it. Wooo.

Haha yes, but it still doesn't take away the fun of music in itself. Why play for others? We shouldn't try to make the listener happy, if that is an outcome, great, if not, great.
