The other INTP forums (INTPcentral and personalitycafe,) disappointed me at first glance. They just seemed so egotistical, unrefined and emotional (in the bad way.) I mean, the INTPcentral forums have a sub-forum called the "High-IQ forum"(for real...)
Meanwhile, something like 90% of threads on personalitycafe are about emotions <_<. The rest seems to be about "INTP females." Also it looks suspiciously like some kind of almost dating forum thing

It is each and every memeber's duty to keep this place better than those other two! For great justice!

I actually really liked the look of Central, for a long time. They seemed intelligent, witty, and really original.

After a while I realised that all of the above was usually achieved by being giant douchebags and sticking by your guns even when you're not sure if they're loaded, or even real guns at all.

They remind me of private/prep school kids: very bright, very capable smartarses who shine in each other's company because they're privileged in some way and all went to the same schools/luncheons/tennis games. So they have this whole culture built up around each other, with a bunch of in-jokes and in-references and in-insults that serve to make themselves look sophisticated, and everyone else excluded. But it's superficial. It's built on bullshit. It's very nicely-designed bullshit, but it's shit nonetheless.

It's easy to look like you know what you're talking about, by acting certain and being intelligent enough to convincingly ride roughshod over everyone else's opinions. It's easy to look smart and original by comparison if you're dragging someone else's name through the mud in smart and original ways. But you can't deny the fact that it's no longer about truth or genuine discussion, but about a popularity contest. It's glitter they're throwing in your eyes instead of opening them.

Not that I don't think the above has any worth; I genuinely enjoy it, and Central is more than just that, and their members are indeed intelligent, educated and insightful. But I think at the end of the day I prefer this little hole. They're the marketplace, the streets, the theater - you go there for liveliness and entertainment, but you damn sure bring a knife or some pepper spray. But this is home, where things are a little more mundane, but you know we'll all try not to step on each other's toes just so we look as if we know where we're going.

My fingers smell like fried eggs. :elephant:

Fortunately we prepared second echelon defences much as did Smiling Albert Kesselring in the Mountains of Italy and Unser Giftzwerg Heinrici in the Battle of Berlin ( prolly neither gentleman shown in the film ).

Unfortunately our flv plugins are mostly crap, and will not display.

However, I'll edit that post to provide the download link, which is:

http://intpforum.com/media/video/hitlercafevideo.flv

I find that if one opens it in another tab it will download ( not show ) and eventually open in whichever video default your system provides. ( Sadly, in OpenSUSE this is Totem, which is not good, despite my setting SMPlayer as default for all: OpenSUSE's developers have decided that SMPlayer is an audioplayer and not a videoplayer. ) However it could be saved and opened straight from your hard drive...

Yeah, it's an interesting phenomenon. This place gives off a totally different vibe; one that doesn't feel aggressive. I always try to understand this in human interaction and attempt to alleviate it or change it when I can. But then again, to influence others requires some form of opinion and imposed aggression of that opinion. Sometimes it is hard to know when a line has been crossed, or maybe that's what maturity is supposed to measure. I think it would be nice if people were less aggressive, but no one wants to be ignored and everyone wants to survive and influence in various ways. I guess it's inevitable that transgression of human decency gets crossed now and then; because how will someone know what is too far, wrong, or indecent and inappropriate without first being able to witness the results of the proposed action? Maybe that's the problem that we can only truly appreciate after-the-fact.

But this is only my viewpoint, thankfully. :)

Wait, why do your fingers smell like fried eggs?

Hey guys, did I by any chance leave Precious around here? I thought I might've left it back at Mordor but he just wasn't there . So has anyone seen her?

Yeah, I know what you mean. There's worth on both sides, and I think at the end of the day it's just personal preference which side of the line you err on.

Actually I think it's much easier and handier to say Central is like a big, sprawling city, and we're a dinky little country-town. You may really dig the city but won't ever feel quite as comfortable as in a quiet little place.

Transport's much better though.

Actually you should read some of the very first posts here - the mood it conjured really fits the analogy above.

Complete with the in-house jokes, back thread references and local culture that it'll take at least 5 years to get, and a lifetime to be assimilated into. At least in cities you have a fresh start and a chance. You're analogy's poor and kind of backwards. This place is the better of the two (as good as either could possibly be) though.

Yeah, that was Hustler's baby. Some of us could have gotten in but don't think it's worth the effort, and it's kind of elitist anyway.

That's what Perc Cafe is. Look at the name.

Also, I can't read the site from work. Know why? Because it's officially scanned and listed as a dating site by the blockers. I remember the day that happened. It was right after they put up all their dating stuff.

We have INTPs at TypologyC, but I can't say the NT section is particularly busy.

At least in cities you have a fresh start and a chance. You're analogy's poor and kind of backwards. This place is the better of the two (as good as either could possibly be) though.

I realised the prep-boy analogy only addressed the surface, where the lightest froth had risen to the top. That's where the loudest cliques are, and those have in-jokes, etc. That was talking about active exclusion.

The point about the city is it's big, dangerous, easy to get trod underfoot/disappear, and everyone's out for themselves. Self-preservation-and-promotion in hyperdrive. The analogies work best when combined, I think, where the ruling class of the city are prep school boys. :D

You can't escape having some kind of controlling power, I suppose, but I think I was trying to get at the feeling that 1. power's more evenly distributed here 2. it's more welcoming, so power continues to disperse with incoming members 3. people look out for each other more here.

Less exclusion, more family spirit. But a nice open family, not an insular one. There are inclusive, welcoming country towns as well, even if you don't fit in right away. Not getting the culture happens by default when joining any group, but the exclusion can be less active, because of the power dispersion and active counter, warm fuzziness.

!!!

Anyway, yeah, it's not a perfect analogy. Actually analogies are interesting, in that they depend on similar experiences to work. Like any word, I suppose... My experience of city vs. country town has been as above, with a definite positive slant towards the latter in terms of feewiness. But I can see how it could also be taken the other way, and one could be slanted towards the city for fresh starts, and hate little places for never being able to get a foot in. The perfect analogy would have no possible conflicts in perspective.

As an irrelevant aside: cities are really useful for people with a lot of pent-up, directionless hate. You can just let loose and be absorbed into the masses of soul-destroying rage. I like cities.

I have a feeling this country town also has an unusually high number of mysterious hermits living on the outskirts who are never (or rarely) seen...
