The previous video mentioned using a "Chinese star" to open a car-door lock, an impossible task for many reasons, the least of which being that I'm fairly sure "throwing stars" were Japanese. (it just irked me)

On the subject of lock picking, the media tends to be very cautious about showing real lock picking to the public because they'd be very likely to get complaints about teaching people how to commit crimes. Hence they usually just show one tool being used instead of the two tools you would need.

I've been thinking about buying a set of lockpicks as a hobby

I would suggest this book. I found it imminently useful when I was learning (not that I ever developed much of a practical technique... spent too much time reading I guess).
