A bass player is what occurs when a lead guitarist wants to hold on to his position and starts to search for a guy with either lower self esteem or less ego than himself.

And there I was.

Slapping is gay though.

I was a pretty good bass player, but then I got depressed and lost all motivation to play anything other than video games. I do have a custom made fretless 5 string with EMG pickups. I've had several offers in the past year to join bands, so maybe I should pick it back up and get my finger strength back.

I absolutly hate listening to Geddy Lee play bass... :phear:

I can rock a bass pretty well, but have never found a decent guitar player, so I always end up having to play that.

Vince Guaraldi Trio - Samba de Orpheus

Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder Plus the solo at 7:30

Sun Ra and His Myth Science Arkestra - Moon Dance

A Tribe Called Quest (their bass samples)

I remember listening to them* without good headphones and couldn't hear the bass. The album sounded tons better when I played through good heaphones/stereo speakers.(*Actually, I'm pretty sure it was the Living Legends, I got into them both at the same time((guess why :P), so it's easy to confuse).

^ reminded me of:
Digable Planets - Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)

Everything posted thus far is awesome (except the dubstep, but that's intuitive).

i never really paid any attention to the bass (the instrument), but i'm taking some youtube lessons right now.

i'm learning that it's impossible to sing and play the bass

when i was a skater in the 90ies, i felt that singing is gay anyway. i mostly listed to classic rap like public enemy, or run dmc and i liked the tracks with simple heavy beats the most. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,6, down with the king

Pretty sure you've been looking at my lastfm, or playing tony hawk pro skater games. :P

I don't like metallica but they've got a few tracks:
What I seem to like from the bass is the melody+rhytm, worthy recommendations here^. I would like to see more technical bass play to make favourites.
Wow I cannot even find another bass player I like on the net. Mostly I like bass as a piece of composition that would be shallow or hollow without.

Yeah I love that version of Pyschoticbumpschool on youtube that looks like it's from the same show. It's like 10:00.

I watched the whole concert at one point in the past. It's great. I love bootsy. His stage presence is amazing. I used to idolize the hell out of him. Also since him and Buckethead did a lot of stuff together I loved him more. I'm a total bucketbot. Their work in Praxis is some of their best work in general.

Another guy I like a lot is Victor Wooten. He knows when to shine and when to support. Perfect example of a bass player. Glad he didtched the mustache since this recording lol

Well people seem to appreciate the phat, groovy stuff that Marcus Miller does. So here's an hour of it - with Adam Agati and Louis Cato, who I think is one of the best modern jazz guitarists and drummers going around respectively. Alex Han's a pretty beastly sax player too.

a rather obvious answer, but Massive Attack's Mezzanine has a bass sound unlike any other:

Jimmy Garrison's solo is omg:

and the first 2.5 minutes or so of this track is some of my favorite music ever--oh yeah, and the bass is cool too:

edit:
I believe this is the sped-up version from The Future Sound of Chicago mix (unless I listened to a slow vinyl rip), but it's still some nice programming.

As they worked, Case gradually became aware of the music that pulsed constantly through the cluster. It was called dub, a sensuous mosaic cooked from vast libraries of digitalized pop; it was worship, Molly said, and a sense of community. Case heaved at one of the yellow sheets; the thing was light but still awkward. Zion smelled of cooked vegetables, humanity, and ganja.
