The Forum appears to have been suspended since the 2nd. This was due to a DCMA take-down notice served on our hosts by vBulletin ( formerly Jelsoft, now Internet Brands ) which assumed this was a copyright infringement since they could not find the license details in their records.

Having logged on to their members area and retrieved the license number and such details from their records, I contacted our hosts again, submitted the details to vBulletin, and the hosts turned it on again, saying that as I had complied with vBulletin's request we may as well see what happens next.

For the record, this is an Owned license for infinity. It has expired, which means no further updates except for security patches are allowed; but it is not leased ( which used to be a yearly thing ), just owned.

Some of the complexities of vBulletin's new system of licensing are discussed in this old 2008 page from The Law Professor. Which should give some hints why we are no longer interested in continuing with vBull in the future.

Apart from them not knowing what their left hand is doing, of course.

Those damned management left hands, always up to no good...

Whatever happened to the idea of moving on to some other forum software? Not that it is necessary; I just remembered it was discussed at one point somewhere.

Ragnar. Thanks for the heads-up on all that. This is an important bulletin board affecting the lives of many, especially ... ahem ... INTP types.

I sort of thought you were making a joke with the whole "Vbull" thing there. Vbull...bullsh**....
It was funny in my mind, but not now that I have to explain the thought.

Anyway, glad things are alright.

Much gratitude to Ragnar and everyone and anyone who keeps this forum running. It shames me to realise just how much I've taken you for granted.

I kinda liked the forum being down.
Knowing that I wasn't and couldn't miss anything was very comfortable.

Of course I intend to continue missing things, but the hypothesis was nice in itself.

I was afraid that this site was taken down permanently. It has just happened to me too many times before. Nice to see it's back.

Why is it that everyone still uses VBulletin? I seem to remember forums using uBB, Invision, phpBB etc but you see those less and less.

The black wings of the Angel of Death have gone to beat elsewhere ---

Hello,

intpforum.com, has provided a valid license to run/operate the vBulletin software. We would like to rescind the DMCA as they comply with the proper use of the software. Please let us know if anything else is needed or required.

vb

which is one threat gone. Interestingly, the notice was sent to GSI Hosting, who appear to run the data centers which are utilised by our hosts.

Still, looking at the next billing in October from our hosts, which was around $334 for two years, but may be higher, this means that it is possible that the idea of a donation drive from members, sometimes suggested by some kindly posters, is getting likely. However no member should be expected to send more than, say, a maximum of $10 --- any amount less would be accepted; and it will be in no way expected from any member; and to refrain from peer pressure, all donations would be anonymous.

Implementing it might be difficult, though, since PayPal at least seems to take a chunk...

Haven't thought about it awhile, but here's a present list of Forum Software.
Even adjusting it --- in the drop-down on the right --- to php only to ensure convertability ( apparently one architectural form can be converted to another, but I wouldn't bet on it ), the front-runners would be Simple Machines 2 when it comes out, Woltab's Burning Board, vBulletin's old rival IP Boards, and XenForo.

I've no preference beyond wanting as many compatible plug-ins and themes as possible. Simple Machines have made good products, which are free. Woltrab has a cool name. Our hosts, vBulletin specialists, are running forums with IP Boards and XenForo as people move from vBull. XenForo are expensive, but the developers came from vBulletin *, so conversion is less of a problem.

Xenforo does not support smartphones though, which probably will become more important as time goes by. On the other hand, their own forums are wicked fast; oddly, for a forum company, all of vBulletins own forums have always run at the speed of mud going uphill.

* And were sued, as seems likely, but they won.

'On June 28, 2011, Internet Brands CTO Joe Rosenblum refused to answer questions under oath on advice of counsel in the lawsuit filed against former Jelsoft lead developer Kier Darby and XenForo Ltd. '

Which seems unwise.

The chief investor in Internet Brands, a Mr. Gross, of Idealab, appears to be a swashbuckling type, as mentioned in this thread.

'''... in December [ 2005 ], Gross failed to pay off a $50-million personal loan.'

We've all been there.

I'm glad we are back up. I thought maybe someone didn't pay a bill but did not see a pledge-drive thread anywhere.

Yes, it's the raw animal attraction of Maninchair that keeps the internet going. It sends sparks of electricity to the buried cables which provide all around day porn for all. Next, the NASA is sending him to Australia to provide the locals with free internet and esthetic pleasure.

Who are these people? My computer dies and strange things happen on the forum. I have currently stripped over a mile of wire in my quest to finance the purchase of another computer - so that I once more can haunt the forum

However, I am beginning to suspect my scrap dealer that I sell wire to, I am almost sure there is no such thing as "white copper" - what is the silverish looking wire made of.....

Hmmmm?

I don't understand what any of this is, nor do I care to. I found this site after doing research on these MBTI types. When I entered the site, instead of landing on the expected forum post, I was greeted by a message demanding that I visit this page instead. I thought that I might be redirected after reading what was here, but I see no information relevant to my search. To the moderators here- it would be a good idea to take that redirect down and restore the proper links for your other visitors. In the meantime, I'll be clicking the "cached" button.

I personally benefited from this educational post, despite being late to the party, but I am in agreement with this person I have already categorized as part troll (no offense, my human nature defies me to do differently).

Either way, I'm not so much glad its back as I am glad its still going strong :). Here's to continued prosper.

No, I am not a troll, but merely someone who desired information and was frustrated as I was unduly impeded in my search for it.
