Listen to romantic and classical music.
Mozart's requiem is amazing. The lacrimosa (8th part)
Chopin Op. 28 No. 15
Op. 10 No. 12
Op. 25 No. 11
Nocturne No. 20
Rachmaninov Variations on a theme of Paganini- 18th variation
YouTube- Rachmaninov - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini: Var 18 <----- that is the most beautiful piece I have ever heard.
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

I moved away from metal to more mellow, ambient music. Try Circa Survive.

Fourth Stage: The Madness: Zeuhl, Avant Garde, Mathcore, etc.

Frank Zappa
John Zorn
The Dillinger Escape Plan
Protest The Hero
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Magma
Univers Zero
Koenjihyakkei
Ruins
Bondage Fruit
Unexpect
Dün
Shub Niggurath

Mind you that this list is 100% subjective and is not complete.
I would also like to add Recoil to your list of Avant-Garde music...like nothing I've ever heard before, Alan Wilder at his best. <3

A lot of random stuff. Nine Inch Nails, Classical, Lounge, a bit of radio Hip Hop, bit of jazz, used to listen to a lot of video game music and kind of grew tired of that, electronic to an extent. :storks:

Anthile the list rocks. That covered alot of what I listen to (Opens up 25,000 song playlists). Here are some other bands from random genres that I didn't see on here.

Screamo: Eyes Set To KIll- has a female vocalist, one male vocalists, and meshes the heavier guitars with some piano. Cool combination of vocals

Drop Dead Gorgeous, From Fair to Midland, A Day to Remember, Before Their Eyes, Saosin, and I Am Ghost are alright...

Ambient Alternative: 'Garbage' blends quite a few different sounds

Japanese Metal: Dir En Grey, High and Mighty Color

Latin: Aventura-for those who like the various guitar sounds, (I can't remember what the instrument is called) but they are one of the most popular latin style bands with the spanish guitar

Metal: Five Finger Death Punch, Hammerfall(If you like Helloween or Gamma Ray), the Haunted, Haste the Day, Kamelot, Megadeth, Roadrunner United, Sonata Arctica,
Tarja Turunen, Within Temptation, Hurt

Scars on Broadway and Serj Tankian (System of a Down's guitarist and drummer's band and the lead singer's solo album)

Early 90's punkish female: Heavens to Betsy, Sleater-Kinney

Movie Soundtracks/Classical: Anything by Hans Zimmer, Battlestar Galactica new series, the Hours soundtrack, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Chopin, Craig Armstrong's 'Escape', Naruto Shippuden soundtrack(scores)

To reiterate on Anthile's list definitely check out: Trivium, Dream Theater, Iced Earth, System of a Down, Muse, In Flames, Death, and Nightwish

Emo(Not that this should apply much here): The Used, Senses Fail, Dashboard Confessional, Brand New, Thrice

Voxtrot, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, LCD Soundsystem (get the album Sound of Silver), Cloud Cult (Get the album 'Advice From The Happy Hippopotamus', it's a masterpiece). If you like, check my last.fm for more ideas...I'm kind of obsessed with music.

Ah thank you! I never knew cloud cult had made a new CD. I didn't like feel good ghosts that much but the meaning of 8 was great. Hopefully this one will be good :)

If you're interested in classical, try Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. I don't know whether you'd like it, the length might bore you, but to me, it's amazing. :(

Van Morrison (!) (Moondance, Common One, It's Too Late To Stop Now, Saint Dominic's Preview in particular) - probably some of the most original and intensely emotional music ever made, you should 'give it a listen.'

The Clash
Animal Collective (Merriweather Post Pavilion, Strawberry Jam)
Seu Jorge
Yelle (one song in particular - Ce Jeu (Tepr mix) is a real goodun')
Led Zeppelin
Iggy Pop
David Bowie
Bob Dylan
Vince Guaraldi Trio (The Charlie Brown Christmas album frequently makes me cry)
Earth Wind and Fire (just makes ya' feel good)
Joe Cocker
Robert Palmer (Woke Up Laughing is an astoundingly good song/very depressing)
Erasmo Carlos
Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel - Make Me Smile (Come Up & See Me)
Erik Satie
M83 (it's like caffeine for your imagination)
Rusted Root
Madonna
Daft Punk
Steely Dan
De La Soul
Mos Def
Enya
The Fugees
Genesis
RZA
Peter Bjorn and John
'Walking on Air' from Raymond Brigg's Snowman Movie is very good also, I suggest watching the corresponding clip from the movie as well - it's incredible, it captures the sort of insular, imagination driven world of early childhood perfectly.

The Airborn Toxic Event <-- good sound and its easy to get into their songs
Muse <--- Decent lyrics and I particularly like the singers voice
Green Day <--- Not the new stuff unless you like pop-ish bands and not the very first album unless you like very fast angry things
I used to like the Beatles but ever since that new Rockband came out I cant even look at a CD or album from them (oh the tragity)
