For the record, I don't really care for most female singers... or piano-based pop music really... but for some reason I can't get enough of this Regina Spektor song... and sometimes almost... tears.

YouTube- Regina Spektor - Fidelity

You can now proceed to call me a wuss... and all the jazz... I can't believe how cheesy this song is... and yet still... it touches me. :o

There's a Polka band called Brave Combo that has an album of more conventional pop songs... can't find any youtube videos of it... but much of that gets to me.

Sarah Brightman singing Figlio Perduto causes tears for me every time. It almost seems like a physical response. It's a strong enough reaction that if I'm in public I have to skip that song if it comes up.

I think Ava Maria works as well. Opera in general seems to get to me. I wish I knew why.

Edit: I think I may need to add Sleeping Beauty to the list. Sometimes it catches me on weird days and causes me to.....internally cry? Basically if I cried I would be.

I will now await accusations of being emo. :cat:

What you should await is praise for mentioning Devin Townsend :) None of his songs have made me cry though.

I rarely ever cry, but these are the songs that have come the closest to making me cry or maybe even succeeded:

YouTube- Katatonia - Day
(+ several other Katatonia songs; Relention, I Am Nothing, July)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gR836MBZoFs
YouTube- The Soft Machine - A Certain Kind
YouTube- Dream Theater - "Space Dye Vest"

And of course, Warning's entire Watching From A Distance album.

Oh yes RubberyDucky451. I love Jeff Buckley. That song does not make me tear up, it gives me a deep sense of contentment. I really also like Lilac Wine by him as well.

There's getting to be too many of these to really appreciate them all...

Regardless, this is one of my most emotional songs...

Me no likes Jeff Buckle. The Hallelujah is Cohen's. ;)

Um... re the OP:

There's a song about a tree/person who's tortured, and freedom's supposed to bring him back to life. When I hear this verse:

But where the dawn finds two empty eye sockets
[Freedom] will put two stones of future sight (meaning the stones will become eyes again).
And she will make new arms and new legs grow
out of the chopped flesh.

Of sap without autumn will sprout
The winged relics of my body that I lose in every wound
Because I'm like the chopped tree that grows back:
I still have Life.

:( Makes me cry since the first time I heard it, when I was six.

I forgot to reply before, but thanks to everyone who posted. I actually listened to all the songs posted and I really liked quite a few of them.

wuss...

But no, I agree that song is pretty decent for that genre. It didn't invoke much emotion in me, but omg she is adorable!

The Child Is Gone by Fiona Apple
I've never really liked any of her songs before, but wow, that one was very good. I really liked the lyrics.

Hmmm... I've seen some people talking about Sigur Ros and I totally agree on that ! It's one the sweetest softest sounding bands ever.

Here are some of the songs that made me cry lately:

Erik Satie - Gymnopédie no.1: Lent et Douloureux
The Zombies - The Way I Feel Inside
Blur - Out of Time
Cocteau Twins - Essence
Seu Jorge - Rebel Rebel
Debussy - Claire de Lune
Radiohead - No Surprises

^that whole album makes me emotional. I had to turn it off when I was listening to it in the car with some friends because I wanted to burst out in laughter/cry tears of joy, and I knew I couldnt contain myself past Canada.

I'm sorry that I made you cry
I can't believe I'm just an ordinary guy

I love that lyric.

I feel the same way about that album. The part that really seems to get me is the guitar solo in "Deep Peace", followed by "it's all going away now....." It's wonderful how that song (and well, the whole album) can be angry, and yet be so calming and peaceful. I don't hear that kind of emotional dynamism in most music.

Pretty much their entire Unplugged album, which I listened to almost nonstop this summer. Relatives + language barrier + terrible economic situation + social issues + an ocean away. This song in particular reminds me of a family member whose life I think has been really tragic.

REGINA IS NOT POP. UNGHHHHH.

i hate how everyone can't get past that ONE song and think that that's the song that identifies her. she's fucking brilliant and amazing and seriously un-label-able (i know there's probably a better word for that, but...)

seriously, listen to this and then tell me she's a fucking pop artist:

YouTube- Regina Spektor - Pavlov's Daughter

(sorry, i get a little defensive about mah music. anyway.)

on the topic of songs that make me want to cry... there's this one:

YouTube- Dresden Dolls - Colorblind

and more regina!

YouTube- Regina Spektor - Samson

god that song is beautiful.

Ran:
Yeah Spektor can be pretty good. Samson was my introduction to her, and it impressed me. The thing I like about her is that her music seems authentic (mostly). Not that easy to come by.
She also seems rather interesting. Very individual.

A lot of Rach gets me. There's another genuine music-maker. I like this especially:

YouTube- horowitz plays rach sonata n.2 (pirate rare!) pt.2

Unfortunately I cannot find a single worthwhile version. This is the best, even though it doesn't start at the beginning (lost about 20 seconds beforehand). But the theme is restated several times, so you'll be fine.

The whole sonata is incredibly beautiful, even if there are structural imperfections.

(The bit in the middle where the audience sighs/claps is because Horowitz broke a piano string, the darling <3)

IGNORE THE ABOVE LINK if you haven't the patience to listen to all three movements.

Try this instead - it's short.

YouTube- Rachmaninoff Melody in E Revised and Played by the Composer

Played by the man himself.

Or this:

YouTube- Nikolai Lugansky Rachmaninov, prelude op 23 no 4

Any psuedo-purists who want to argue these aren't 'songs' - bite me. (These aren't songs, goddammit.)

Oh, I'm loving the amount of Spektor being posted here.
As for me, I listen to fairly 'normal' music, but here are a few songs that rarely fail to elicit some emotional response...

Regina Spektor - Eet

Death Cab for Cutie - What Sarah Said

Mieka Pauley - All the Same Mistakes

Billy Talent - White Sparrows

Pink Floyd - On the Turning Away

Yes, I am that lame. Oh, and nearly anything with piano.

I find some christian songs really good. Better than a lot of pop out, anyway.

I don't tend to find songs make me particularly emotional (I'm just not that sort of person) however these are among those that really get me thinking. These songs tend to make me stop and listen rather than just playing in the background.

the song i actually had in mind when i looked at this thread was actually the first video posted! and all that could have been by NIN. That and "Black gives way to Blue" off the new Alice in Chains album.

Atmosphere - Guarantees
These warehouse wages kill the end's introduction
Man, I shoulda' shchooled it up when I was younger, shoulda' stuck to plan
Always had the dreams of bein' more self-assertive
And my kid's a teenager now, he needs the health insurance
So break my body, break-break my soul down
Just another zombie walkin' blindly through ya ghost town
Pull up to the bar to politic and tap the power
Ain't nobody really all that jolly at your happy hour
But I don't wanna go home yet
So I'ma talk to my cigarette and that television set
It doesn't matter what brand or station
Anything to take away from the current situation
No overtime pay, no holiday
Months behind on everything but the lottery
Winter 'round the corner, guaranteein' that my car dies
Wifey havin' trouble tryna juggle both the part-times
My cup ain't close to filled up
We tryna build up so we could have enough
And when I finally get the color, won't be nothin' else to paint on
A friend of mine tried to kill himself to the same song

My better half is mad at makin' magic outta can goods
My tax bracket status got her questionin' my manhood
My shorty got caught smokin' weed at a concert
And if I smack 'em everybody treats me like a monster
My neighbors ain't doin' much better
And we makin' competition instead of stickin' together
Can't save no nest egg, in fact this nest is rented
In fact that rent is late, wait
The money ain't here, the raise ain't comin'
Just me and my son and that crazy woman
And those bartenders, this whole fuckin' country
Got everybody swallowin' that lunch meat
Maybe we could speed up the process
Kill me in my thirties in the name of progress
Put me in the dirt and then change the topic
Sometimes seems like the only way to stop it
Contemplate my departure date
Doesn't take a lot to get a lot of us to talk this way
Take a shot at me, that's all I'm obligated for
Apparently my only guarantee is a walk-away

Atmosphere - Yesterday
I thought I saw you yesterday
But I didn't stop, 'cause you was walkin' the opposite way
I guess I coulda' shouted out ya name
But even if it was you, I don't know what I would say
We could sit and reminisce about the old school
Maybe share a cigarette, because we both fools
Chop it up and compare perspectives
Life, love, stress and set-backs, yes
So you could tell me how hard you had it
And you could show me all the scars to back it
And we could analyze each complaint
Break it down and explain these mistakes I make
I like to tangle up the strings of the puppetry
But you knew me back when I was a younger me
You seen Sean in all types of light
And I've been meanin' to ask you if I'm doin' alright

Yesterday
Was that you? Looked just like you
Strange thangs my imagination might do
Take a breath, reflect on what we been through
Or am I just goin' crazy 'cause I miss you?

I'm shook, I know, I pushed when I shoulda' pulled
Took it all back if I could, I put that on my soul
And I would make a top-notch good listener
If you could block-off a little time out to give it here
Since we went our separate paths
I've hit a couple snags that remind me of the past
I can't front, I'm havin' a blast
But damned if I ain't afraid of how long it's gonna last
Sittin' here wishin' we could kick it
Give me your opinions, I do miss the criticisms
I didn't mean to be distant, make a visit
I'll wait up and keep the coffee brewin' in the kitchen
But who am I jokin' wit'?
There's no way that you and I will ever get to re-open it
It doesn't matter, this is more than love
And maybe if I'm lucky, get to see you out the corner of

Yesterday
Was that you? Looked just like you
Strange thangs my imagination might do
Take a breath, reflect on what we been through
Or am I just goin' crazy 'cause I miss you?

And when you left, I didn't see it comin'
I guess I slept, it ain't like you was runnin'
You crept out the front door slow
And I was so self-absorbed I didn't even know
And by the time I looked up it was booked up
Put it all behind you, the bad and the good stuff
A whole house full of dreams and steps
I think you'd be impressed with the pieces I kept
You disappeared but the history is still here
It's why I try not to cry over spilt beer
I can't even get mad that you're gone
Leavin' me was probably the best thing you ever taught me
I'm sorry, it's official
I was a fist-full, I didn't keep it simple
Chip on the shoulder, anger in my veins
Had so much hatred, now it brings me shame
Never thought about the world wit'out you
And I promise that I'll never say another bad word about you
I thought I saw you yesterday
But I knew it wasn't you, 'cause you passed away, dad

Nine Inch Nails - Hurt (wins)

As much as I like NIN, their version of Hurt doesn't hold a candle to Johnny Cash's cover.

Also, if we're mentioning songs from soundtracks, the entire Synecdoche, New York soundtrack gets to me...

I can't find my preferred theme but here's one:
YouTube- Deserte
