Ok so where do various artists and songs fit in terms of their function:

Bon Jovi - 'Always', 'Have a Nice Day', 'It's My Life': Fi. Strongly felt internal value system. Can also hear the Se auxilary.

Anberlin - 'A Day Late', 'Readyfuels', 'Paperthin Hymn': Fe with Si. The strongly expressed and kind of feminine feelings are very outward, and the Si makes them kind of nostalgic.

Jeff Buckley - 'Last Goodbye', 'Grace', 'Forget Her': Fe. Outwardly expressed emotions, kind of feminine.

Most improvising: I would imagine would use Ne

Gangsta rap/hip-hop: would probably come from ES

I've considered making a topic like this. I was listening to the band Deftones and remember thinking their sound is very ENFP, or maybe INFP, but definitely FP.

I think Tool is very INTP.
NIN: hmmm, INFJ?
Mastodon: ENTJ?
Motorhead: ESTP?
System of a Down: ENFP?
Most pop: ESFP
Classical: INFP?

Just some random ideas...

Progressive music in general I think may be very NP.

INFP: Van der Graaf Generator, Yes, Chroma Key

I want to believe that Devin Townsend is INTP. I can't be sure of that.

I don't seem to like what most people on here consider INTP music at all- by this I mean Tool/ Dream Theater sort of stuff. (But I like Nirvana and the Pixies- is that INTP music?) How would you label the primary sort of music I like- acoustic well-written lyrics Bob Dylan sort of stuff and good ol' Indie rock- INFP? INFJ?

Hmm...I guess I listen to a lot of ESXP music; techno, techno pop, jpop/rock..hyper, "electric" dancin music. I don't think there's a single 'slow' song on my mp3 player.

That's a lot of NTs there Anthile! I personally came to the realisation that I like good F music. I get enough NT running through my head all the rest of the day, don't need it in my song. But I had my prog phase and still listen to the odd bit of Symphony X or DT.

Yeah, like Banana Mango, I typically like music that brings me into a world I don't enter so much in reality. Music is an opportunity to feel things in a safe manner. It's kind of like talking about things on this forum I don't tend to talk about in real life. I suppose that's why music tends to be a solo project for me- I like to listen to music best by myself; even if I am at a concert, it tends to drive me bat shit when someone tries to share it with me- it's just me and the music. Although it can be a way for me to express my feelings for others- I am the queen of the mix.

That said, there are limits. I hate overtly sappy. For example, I hate treacly pop music. It makes me want to vomit while simultaneously bludgeoning myself in the head.

I was previewing my wordy reply when the forum crashed, and then my computer crashed and lost the text, so it's gone.
I'll try again.
Since my musical taste changes with emotion, there are many songs and artists that appeal to me.
As far as what I would recommend to INTPS in general:
Rush, definitely. Floyd. Radiohead. Death Cab For Cutie.
My tastes (and the contents of my CD changer) stretch from Tchaikovsky and Mozart, to Feist and Fiona Apple; from Concrete Blonde, Junkhouse, The Tragically Hip and Matthew Good Band, to Motorhead and Pearl Jam.
I like loud, fast punk bands like the Distillers; stuff like Die Hunns, Rammstein, Korpiklaani and Sum 41.
I don't know if there has to be a rhyme or reason why I like it. Intricate music with complicated timing can be good (but only some Yes really appeals to me):Saga, Asia, old Genesis, and Frank Zappa are cool; but I also like simpler stuff like Sade, the Pixies, and Billie Holliday. I have always liked Mississippi Delta blues or blues-rock (Keb Mo, Elmore James, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, North Mississippi All-Stars).
When I look for background music on the computer, I always go for an alternative station.

I wonder if it's really possible to put a label on a band? Maybe an individual artist? I wouldn't be surprised to find out that Bob Dylan was an INTP (anybody know?). What about John Lennon? Was he too much of an idealist? I don't like Dylan. I think he is a hack compared to John Lennon.:phear:
I like emotion in my music; that is rule one -it has to move me. Then intelligent lyrics, then interesting music last (unless it is instrumental, then emotion and/or interesting music can matter, but mostly emotion). I never got Gentle Giant or King Crimson. No real emotion. I'm a big fan of emotional guitar solos, so Dave Gilmour is the guitar god in my book.
Does the personality of the leader of a group come out in the music of his group, and can you label something like the Beatles with three distinct personalities writing the music?

No you can't, but a song (pop songs anyway) usually have only one mood. That mood might reflect certain functions, that's what I was getting at. I didn't mean to type the personality of the person behind the music, rather the music itself. But that's interesting too, I guess.

Okay, you have a much better handle on these letters than me. Ti and Ne were the top two functions on one test I took, and multiple personalities tests say logic first; so analysis, understanding principles, and seeing interconnections and linkages are supposed to be important. That could explain Deep Forest and classical music, but I'm not all cold logic damnit. I like my simple emotional music .
Maybe that's the attraction of Radiohead -Myxamytosis, Wolf at the Door and a bunch of other songs on Hail To the Thief really appeal to me. It's emotional and complicated.
Still, I maintain that I love music for the emotion most of all.

Yeah, I surely see the F. But SFP would make her an SP, and I don't know about that, so possibly an NFP? I hear she's quite extroverted, so ENFP? ...yay. =3

what do you guys think about Taking Back Sunday? Their style of music is quite odd, though I find myself drawn to it.
