How are you taking advantage of that?

I'm going to be out, because it will be very quiet out there.

I will probably end up watching it, because I'm at a college with jack shit to do besides fall in with the crowd. Or I may just do what I usually do, sit in my dorm and play computer games.

The wife is going to take me out to dinner. That means a seat will be assured if there's no TV going. But what if it is?

I believe I heard those footballers are going to have to obey a new footballer rule: The tackler person will no longer be allowed to knock his opponents brain against the inside of his skull. I only heard that. Is it true, and if so will it apply to this game?

I'm currently out playing Pathfinder.

I actually did get invited by a friend to her house to watch the Bowl with her and a few friends. I haven't gotten to spend time with her outside of work for months, so I'll go over for awhile, but it's not for the game... it's to be with people I like.

In typical fashion I was at the grocery picking up some things, being annoyed at the sheer wall of Bros and their insipid female equivalents, when it dawned on me that the Superbowl is a thing.

Habitatdoctor, I like the new avatar!

Located one of the coolest driftwood mid century modern lamps, bought it for a song, then stopped by my favorite soap place and bought that incredible smelling Linden french soap plus a new one, black cherry shea. I sniffed it on the way home.

Pizza, football later! I wonder what scandal half time will bring this year? It's just getting so hard to think of an original scandal.

It's the commercials that are worth watching.

Dull. American Football is incredibly boring. I went to the gym and it was nice and quiet. The game wasn't on, though.

I'm waiting for the racist jokes due to the lights going out in New Orleans. :D

The commercials are so obnoxious though. The formula is Pussy + Product = Sales. :phear:

Every year me and my friends have a not-so-superbowl party 'cus we don't give a shit... (we're american)

I don't understand what's appealing about watching a bunch of millionaires butting heads and taking breaks every 4 seconds. I'm convinced its a matter of stubborn tradition at this point.

Maybe furnishing the refs with tasers and giving the offensive linemen crossbows would jazz things up? Penalty: face mask. Eight zaps to the nuts...first down. :cat:

The only one I saw was the Coke commercial, which was fine until they tacked a stupid voting aspect onto it.

i wish i were surprised at these revelations.

I'm not surprised either but people should be apprised - they're lionizing a probable (double) murderer tonight. It doesn't matter too much, though, which form or guise the murder takes. Walmart kills thousands in third-world factory fires and ~5 Pakistani die per day from drones. :rip:

you know i was thinking about this on my porcelain thrown the other day...i dont have too much of a problem with the 'fact' that ray lewis may have murdered somebody, or been involved in it. If anything, hes a testament to second chances and turning your life around, after learning from mistakes (i mean god knows what ray lewis' life was like growing up, i just cant judge the dude) Its confusing, i know...not that i think murder is acceptable, i just think the bigger issue as you say, of cash monay bling bling being the ticket to freedom/legal resources.

another issue is just the idolization of celebrities and athletes in general. i just never will understand it. people just love to pretend like they know these people, they know a caricature of that person, nothing more. and are willing to look through atrocious events of their lives, blinded by there infatuation/love/whatever it is.

It's the injustice that grates me. Additionally, the fact that society reveres and financially incentivizes certain behaviors. How is some dude pulverizing a quarterback bettering humanity? These are clearly inferior men - that goes for politicians and most athletes.

Yeah, I feel, as you allude to, that it's both vicarious I could have done that Joe Everyman pipe dreams and escapism. There's also a macho thing and sublimated aggression aspect to it. Meh, it could just be an excuse to drink copious amounts of beer. Add the peer pressure aspect: you're hooked! :D

You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer. -Frank Zappa :D

I think Wikipedia puts it best.

Lewis gained notoriety for his involvement in a January 2000 fight that resulted in an indictment on murder and aggravated-assault charges. In a plea agreement he pled guilty to obstruction of justice in exchange for testimony against two other defendants.

Despite this incident, Lewis has rehabilitated his image over the years while being selected to 13 Pro Bowls and named an Associated Press All-Pro 10 times.

...As if being good at a sport can make up for possibly murdering somebody. I just love the mentality of this country.

The insane thing is the murder thing may have bolstered Lewis' "outlaw" credentials. :borg:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madden_NFL_2005

the be fair, the madden cover...he was the super bowl mvp the year after the murders took place.

its the one thing i HAVE to agree when Ray lewis is brought up...in teh context of a football player, he was a real pleasure to have watched.

I wonder how the murder charge affected Lewis' image though. :king-twitter:

Even in the game today haha the announcers brought it up. It's like Vick...always there.

Flacco is from South Jersey. He and his family are friends of a friend of mine. They are all good people. That the Superbowl is a high quality football game is enough reason for me to watch it, but I enjoyed seeing one of the good guys succeed.
Ray Lewis is the kind of person that makes people need to carry guns.
The halftime show was aimed at the women who like the pageantry - and some don't even understand the game. I served the Buffalo Wings and the chili during half time - traditionally, half time is for people to talk to each other and enjoy some libation. The halftime show just annoys real fans.
Two brothers, both good guys, meet in the Superbowl as head coaches - you couldn't make this stuff up.

As an ENTP on an INTP board, I really dislike this thread.

If you read the thread you'd see that it's about what to do on Superbowl Sunday other than watch 'the game'. In other words, INTP's don't watch SuperBowl (generally), unless they're hooking up with friends as JennyWocky is.

So, Alan Watt thinks sports fans are a government/corporate plot.
What does he think of people who play computer games?
What does Alan Watt do for entertainment? Does he read novels, play computer games, play tennis, sit and have a brew with friends, what(?) - because you could do what he did to watching sports to any passtime he might choose.
I think, overall, he has an interesting view, but it could also be that he wears pink panties.
More than 110 million people watched the Superbowl. Alan West thinks they didn't really watch it because they wanted to, and were entertained by it. He is reaching way too far here; his view is blocked by his own view. If he actually played the game, he would enjoy it. He, very likely, did not.

If you want to know what Alan Watt thinks, I suggest that you ask Alan Watt.

The idea here is one of self determination, rather than directed determination.

I see no value in sports beyond personal challenge or exercise. The idolatry of team sports manifested in popular culture, to me, is abhorrent. The behaviour of sportsgoers, to me, is irrational, especially in instances of high personal investment plus resultant stupid personal behavior eg english soccer riots.

The irony here is huge. How about you lead yourself. Do what you want. You don't need a team wearing colors or playing a game to let you know who you are, especially if the basis of that is where you were born or live.

I watched it for a few minutes, twice. The first time they lost power, the second while the 1/2 show was going. My husband changed the channel.

I read this morning Beyonce said it was a great/proud day "for African American woman". I'm a little disappointed. If she'd just said "day for woman" I would agree. Differentiating color is just that, and I just don't think that way.

Hopefully, someday some folks will catch up on their thinking.

As for missing the commercials, I figured I'd just youtube them.

There is something in human nature that wants us to take a direction, any direction. I know that is pretty crude, but tell me it isn't true. People want to take action, move and go in any direction with a goal. The idea is to get from here to there. Look at what that means. Sports give a clear direction with a target to reach. Once reached you experience the reward or failure. That lasts for a little while and then you go on to the next. It's an amazing phenomenon because look at how universally it can be applied.

I guess some people were grossed out by the GoDaddy commercial.

Ironically, I found the one that aired "grosser" than the one that was only shown on their web site. The one they aired had no tongue but a LOT of slurpy noises. The one on the site that they decided NOT to air actually had a rock cover playing during the kiss, so you couldn't really hear the sounds; but you could see a lot of prolonged tongue action, which I suppose bothered some people.

I actually thought it was funny, only in that sort of, "Wow, most people will see this as so inappropriate that everyone will be talking about it tomorrow... which is exactly why they are running it. How brazen, if banal."

It's the commercials that are worth watching.

I find this very idea perverse and utterly revolting. Much more than the adoration to the sport. To think that people have such empty lives that they relish some fleeting, mediocre entertainment in the form of astronomically wasteful propaganda to make them buy shit they shouldn't give a fuck about.

Time to slither back into my cave...

I have a skill set most of thetv watching universe would be seriously jealous of- an internal edit button, I don't see commercials. My brain just times out and goes into thought of something I like better.

These days commercials are so bad I consider them an affront to my brain. That being said occasionally there are some decent ones in a Superbowl game. If they are and teams I'm not personally interested in are playing... youtube it is. I have alot of other ways I like to waste my time, I can't be bothered with actually paying attention through the whole thing. I've got other unimportant stuff to do. ;)

I got drunk and cooked a whole bunch of food, watched the game in between drinking and cooking activities.

I like football. I don't pay attention to when games are on or follow the league or anything like that but if I walk in a room and a game is on I enjoy watching it.

My ten year old son played football for the first time this past season and it was a really positive experience for him, even though he began with no clue what he was doing and a definite nervousness about it all, and even though he was nowhere near one of the "star players" on his team. He learned a lot of self discipline, as far as controlling his outbursts and having perseverance in the things he is trying or wanting to do. I find value in the sport as more than just entertainment after going though a whole season with him, though much of this can be attributed to him having a very positive and thoughtful coach that was willing to encourage him and teach him as long as he promised to always bring his own best effort.
