I don't understand what's appealing about watching a bunch of millionaires butting heads and taking breaks every 4 seconds.
I'm waiting for the racist jokes due to the lights going out in New Orleans.
The commercials are so obnoxious though. The formula is Pussy + Product = Sales.![]()
The only one I saw was the Coke commercial, which was fine until they tacked a stupid voting aspect onto it.

Ray Lewis also demonstrates how $ = impunity from homicide prosecution = fame.![]()
i wish i were surprised at these revelations.
I'm not surprised either but people should be apprised - they're lionizing a probable murderer tonight. It doesn't matter too much, though, which form the murder takes. Walmart kills thousands in third-world factory fires and ~5 Pakistani die per day from drones.![]()
you know i was thinking about this on my porcelain thrown the other day...i dont have too much of a problem with the 'fact' that ray lewis may have murdered somebody, or been involved in it. If anything, hes a testament to second chances and turning your life around, after learning from mistakes (i mean god knows what ray lewis' life was like growing up, i just cant judge the dude) Its confusing, i know...not that i think murder is acceptable, i just think the bigger issue as you say, of cash monay bling bling being the ticket to freedom/legal resources.
another issue is just the idolization of celebrities and athletes in general. i just never will understand it. people just love to pretend like they know these people, they know a caricature of that person, nothing more. and are willing to look through atrocious events of their lives, blinded by there infatuation/love/whatever it is.
It's the injustice that grates me. Additionally, the fact that society reveres and financially incentivizes certain behaviors. These are clearly inferior men - that goes for politicians and most athletes.
Yeah, I feel, as you allude to, that it's both vicarious I could have done that Joe Everyman pipe dreams and escapism. There's also a macho thing and sublimated aggression aspect to it. Meh, it could just be an excuse to drink copious amounts of beer.![]()
AMEN!
the smart ones figure out there never need be an excuse to drink copious amounts of booze. just give in to the dionysian urge...every day is a 'super bowl' for me![]()

Lewis gained notoriety for his involvement in a January 2000 fight that resulted in an indictment on murder and aggravated-assault charges. In a plea agreement he pled guilty to obstruction of justice in exchange for testimony against two other defendants.
Despite this incident, Lewis has rehabilitated his image over the years while being selected to 13 Pro Bowls and named an Associated Press All-Pro 10 times.
I think Wikipedia puts it best.
...As if being good at a sport can make up for possibly murdering somebody. I just love the mentality of this country.
The insane thing is the murder thing may have bolstered Lewis' "outlaw" credentials.

the be fair, the madden cover...he was the super bowl mvp the year after the murders took place.
its the one thing i HAVE to agree when Ray lewis is brought up...in teh context of a football player, he was a real pleasure to have watched.
As an ENTP on an INTP board, I really dislike this thread.
"unless".If you read the thread you'd see that it's about what to do on Superbowl Sunday other than watch 'the game'. In other words, INTP's don't watch SuperBowl (generally), unless they're hooking up with friends as JennyWocky is.
If you want to know what Alan Watt thinks, I suggest that you ask Alan Watt. So, Alan Watt thinks sports fans are a government/corporate plot.
What does he think of people who play computer games?
What does Alan Watt do for entertainment? Does he read novels, play computer games, play tennis, sit and have a brew with friends, what(?) - because you could do what he did to watching sports to any passtime he might choose.
I think, overall, he has an interesting view, but it could also be that he wears pink panties.
More than 110 million people watched the Superbowl. Alan West thinks they didn't really watch it because they wanted to, and were entertained by it. He is reaching way too far here; his view is blocked by his own view. If he actually played the game, he would enjoy it. He, very likely, did not.
The irony here is huge. How about you lead yourself. Do what you want. You don't need a team wearing colors or playing a game to let you know who you are, especially if the basis of that is where you were born or live.Hi george. And just what would the alternative be? You lead and I may choose to follow.
Confusing Alan Watt and Alan West = priceless.Alan Watt Alan West
What if I don't know where I want to go? What if I don't know who I am? That's a problem, isn't it?How about you lead yourself. Do what you want. You don't need a team wearing colors or playing a game to let you know who you are
There is something in human nature that wants us to take a direction, any direction. I know that is pretty crude, but tell me it isn't true. People want to take action, move and go in any direction with a goal. The idea is to get from here to there. Look at what that means. Sports give a clear direction with a target to reach. Once reached you experience the reward or failure. That lasts for a little while and then you go on to the next. It's an amazing phenomenon because look at how universally it can be applied. The idea here is one of self determination, rather than directed determination.
I see no value in sports beyond personal challenge or exercise.
I have a few American friends living nearby. They told me the commercials were particularly outrageous so I was curious and watched it with them.
The adverts were tame, man.![]()
It's the commercials that are worth watching.
I find this very idea perverse and utterly revolting. Much more than the adoration to the sport. To think that people have such empty lives that they relish some fleeting, mediocre entertainment in the form of astronomically wasteful propaganda to make them buy shit they shouldn't give a fuck about.
Time to slither back into my cave...
