I have a strong suspicion that I will be voted down, but thanks anyway.
It is not that I am against anyone using a gif of a little green head riding an elephant, but it seems kind of silly and distracting to see all of those images every time I want to write a post. In fact, I bet this is the first time that gif of a little green head riding an elephant has ever been used. Ever. Same with the... stork dance? WTF? I know that there must be an interesting history behind each of these things, but, whatever it may be, I think it is time to move on. Maybe you can just move those things out of the sidebar and into the drop down menu only?

How many times can observing a man wearing a crown while sitting on a blue bird possible entertain people..?
I agree, they're not required in the sidebar.
Besides, when did emoticons deviate from representing emotion or being a useful medium for demonstrating a prominent concept or action to merely making little animated beings act out obscure stuff for the sake of it?
Regardless of how useful they are as emoticons, I believe having these over-sized, animated entities in one's peripheral as one attempts to format a reply is distracting and unnecessary. They would still exist in the menu with the other excess emoticons even if they were removed from the sidebar.
Examples of better choices, if only for the sake of being less intrusive, would be:
Tradition, forum culture, or shortsighted views of them being entertaining appear to be rather poor arguments to me as all hinder progression and efficiency of function.

Animations convey emotions as well. Speaking of which, one could argue that due to the multiple expressions, an animated gif can offer a greater range of emotional expression.

Fukyo said:What efficiency? The efficiency of writing posts? People have ADD, so they must "OOOOOH SHINY!!" *stares at the elephant*

Erm, where was I...
Well shit, I just lost my train of thought completely, hmmm, what was that I was saying...it must have been the dolphins....![]()
