I've always likened the MBTI to a blood pressure test. Trying to draw a conclusion from a single incident is meaningless. Several tests, over a period of time, will provide a clearer indicator on one's personality.

Then you have to factor in that different tests might have different questions, which in turn lead to different results. Lastly, results are affected by the reason for the testing, and an awareness of what MB tests for. If it's done as a blind test (that is, unrecognizable as the MBTI), then more objective results are possible.

I found out about this forum because of a job posting on Craigslist. In addition to resume and cover letter they wanted a copy of my MBTI from a site they linked to. It's a call center, Customer Care, which I'm really good at  ), but I know they don't want an INTP! So I answer the test differently, and sent them my ENTJ results.

For me, it isn't so much about finding a strict categorization of myself as much as it is looking at the definitions of type offered up by different testers. As I put in my profile I'm primarily ANTP, "A" being "Ambivert" (not my term). I'm not likely to join the ENTP forum, though--they just aren't as enigmatic as the "I"s.

The more tests you take, over a period of time, the more likely you will get a accurate picture.

Right.

The more tests you take over a period of time the more likely you will be able to manipulate the tests to give the outcome you desire.

The only time I always type INTP, no matter how I try to manipulate it otherwise, is if I do it while outright drunk.

I don't know anything about the best recommended test.

Get really messed up and test. there you go.

There's sometimes a demarcation between who we want to be and who we really are. Therefore, I would recommend taking an inductive approach to discovering your type which obviates the possible influence of desiring a particular type during personality test taking. So take a look at the eight functions and figure out how they mesh with your personality as regards both strength and consequent order of functions. That is, if introverted intuition jumps out at you in conjunction with, perhaps, extraverted thinking, then INTJ might be an obvious contender for your personality type.

I disagree. As an INTP I have difficulty answering any other way than how I feel, even if I'm trying to skew the results. It feels dishonest.

Well, I have a third suggestion for you. I spent several years testing and developing an adult , and two child tests (we use Keirsey's title of "Sorter") and these are free on my site www.parentingbytemperament.com with a good amount of feedback on them. Just look for About the Sorters on the main menu, and go from there.

They were done on a university campus, using college students for the adult form and questions were done and used or replaced until we got a statistically valid instrument. I think results should be close to those on the real MBTI thing.

ISTJ with it. All clear except for the S which was slight.

Thanks.

Do you mind if I quote some of your post for a presentation I'm doing for a class?

...seriously

I got INTP on both, and I've gotten it on every test I've taken, including the legitimate (paid) MBTI. So as far as I can see, they're both pretty legitimate. I'd analyze yourself and decide whether you're an E or an I and then go from there. Not all of us are concrete personality-wise.
