Does anyone else completely dread having their picture taken? I can't stand how much I worry about pictures! I can't ever seem to "open up" to the camera or whatever, I'm just horrifically shy around cameras. Ahh!

I'm the same way. The fastest way to get me to leave a room is to bring a camera into play. I always look like I'm drunk, a wanted criminal, or half asleep in most photos that are taken of me. :D

yes... it's almost a little sad. I didn't mind them all that much until I forgot how to smile--I looked broken in every picture, without exception (including prom, which I felt bad about for the girl, who of course cared more about how pictures looked), and just started avoiding cameras. Now the only ones that get taken of me are when I'm not looking... which works out quite well, because they're usually pretty funny. People take them when they see me doing something that's "characteristically me," and those don't bother me so much.

no fear of cameras. I just tend not to get alot of pictures taken. I dont avoid cameras, it just doesnt happen alot. Good pictures of myself are few and far between.

:D We're just too complex to be adequately portrayed by a regular pic.

Don't care. I usually make faces. Flaring your nostrils is key for any face.

I don't mind pictures, it's just the "smiling for the camera" crap for commemorating important events. That and candid pictures. If I'm not posing, I look retarded. Literally.

Who wants to know?
All photos I'm in have me in various stages of silly. I prefer being behind the lens. Personally, I don't feel much need to go around commemorating things by taking photos in posing groups, and I usually prefer scenic shots, but that's just me (and my occasionally photographic memory).

I want to stress again that I look bad in photos, especially when I smile. No reason to this except to soothe my egoistic low self-esteem (so what if there's a paradox?), so there.

Me fear camera steal soul.

*****

This thread actually introduces a topic I'd been wondering.

What is the merit (or otherwise) of having a gallery for members to post pictures of themselves?

I rather suspect it would be negative overall, as we'd inevitably start judging one another on appearance and lose the value of our thoughts.

What do others say?

I dont know about everybody else, but I probably wouldnt post any. I think a thread to post art would be less superfluous and more interesting.

Visual Art forum is now awaiting christening. Who's going to start a gallery thread with a picture of their favourite art?

I do hate having my photo taken. The best one taken of me recently was when someone said "Smile!" and I was in a bad mood, so I smiled really sarcastically at the camera and it came out looking like I was happy. So now I just do a sarky grin when someone wants to take a photo. I find I can't fake a smile spontaneously, there has to be some sort of trigger - I ask my friends to try to take pictures of me laughing genuinely, since the only time I know how to smile is when I do it naturally.

I usually don't mind having pictures taken if i'm drunk & acting like a moron, or making a stupid looking facial expression. Serious pictures are tough, I'd rather be taking pictures of other people.

i really don't understand the need to have pictures. most people who take pictures will look at them once then stow them away, never to be seen again. it seems incredibly impractical to me.

as far as a "picture gallery" here, i'd be lying if i said i wasn't interested in seeing what you all looked like, and i'd certainly look at all the pictures, but i'm also quite content making up my own image of all of you based on your various personalities.

Nope. I think some people actually do get those things out and look back at them, years after they were taken. In general, INTPs probably wouldn't, though.

I don't really mind having my pic taken, but I avoid posed shots, i hate them and never look good. In the end, I usually don't like having my picture taken simply because most of my friends simply don't know how to use cameras: crappy images guaranteed!

Add to that the fact that they are usually stowed away in one huge folder, mixed with pictures off all dates, events, and cameras, and sometimes the pictures are renamed, making a huge mess of the thing.

Tekton, this is maybe an odd place to make this post but I promise I will make it relevant! Is that the Oculus of the Pantheon in your avatar?

The relevant bit: I got pictures from Iceland back today, and most of them are really dire. I look like I've just been clubbed over the head in most of them.

i think the most recent picture i have of myself is about 4 years old, before i lost a lot of weight. the good thing about it, though, is that keeping it around is good motivation to not gain the weight back again.

It is indeed. Perhaps the most influential building in the history of western civilization :D

I wonder why most extraverts don't really mind pictures (they crave them), but then they go all "oh I look horrible, delete them all!" when in fact they look fine... Is it insecurity? Or do they need to have absolute "quality control" over their projected public image?

Might I be the first person to have a picture of themselves as their avatar here? I found one I don't hate.

Methinks EditorOne, Cabbo Pearimo and Decaf have you beat on that score.

What? That's not really Decaf?! Are you sure?

As much as I like that picture I finally decided to switch to an actual picture of me. Its from Halloween two years ago (some day I'll tell you all the story that goes along with it).

I don't like cameras that much either, but, as someone said earlier, I like being "behind the lens". I would view this as somewhat represnetative of the INTP personality (and of the personalities close to INTP), we like observing, not necesararly being observed ourselves. I many times am watching what's going on around me and forget that other people can see me. It may be why we're characterized as "distant".

I don't like to have my photo taken but over the years I have learned how to endure. I had a roommate in college who was disgustingly extroverted and, even though she could have understandingly been Leary of the camera because of her weight (she was about 300 pounds), she was very photogenic. My INTP mother, on the other hand, is horribly unphotogenic. She recently published a poetry book which required a picture of the poet on the back page and it looked like she was about to puke. Have you noticed that many authors have awful photos?

I've enjoyed playing with a camera, trying to take interesting pictures of myself. Then I import them to Photoshop or something and try to personalise my face to suit my personality.

Of course I am alone when I do this, I dislike others taking my picture.

Nope; no reason for it. Pictures cannot deceive character. Emotion in picture is untrustworthy.
