So, i was at the hair salon today; and i overheard the manager talkin about this new lady who just jumped off by not paying the bill..
She said she's going to the ATM to draw cash and then left without paying.

So i was just wondering,

How common are crimes like these?
What can the business owner do for getting the money back or is it unrealistic to follow the case for someone for a 50$ bill?

Have you ever committed any such petty crimes? like once or regularly kinda?

Im not saying im ethical or anything; i for one used to frequent a gaming cafe where i knew there was a software glitch which allowed me to play for 30-40 hours by paying 1$ without even hacking or anything. (The stupid software wouldnt log you off after your time expired so you could just sit in the place for like 30-40 hours after that but its not my fault they have such bad software installed where i can freeload without doing anything illegal)

What are your thoughts on people doing stuff like this? and other petty/ small moral crimes say, taking money from the newspaper vending box?

Edit;
i mainly wanted to know what is your thought on people who steal *knowingly*. Like what if you see a person leaving without paying his bill; what do you think about the person. What is the impression you get about the person;
What is your impression, What would be a non-intp's impression?

I have spray painted things.

I have walked out of a store wearing a hat I didn't pay for.

I have climbed onto the roofs of buildings.

I never got caught either.

Most businesses have to deal with petty theft. Most people have committed petty theft.

Maybe have a ATM machine close to the shop so you can see if the customer is actually intending to withdraw cash and pay...
There was a time where I was looking at a tie on a shop and held it in my hand. Browsing around the shop and completely forgot the tie was in my hand and left without paying for it. Funny thing is there was a security guard standing at the entrance who didn't even notice the tie in my hand lol. When I realised I still had the tie I did inconspicuously return it to the shop though.

Most retail businesses factor in petty theft as a loss when setting prices, wages, etc. In a sense, when you steal something from a store, you raise store prices for honest shoppers and/or lower the wages of employees. Just something to think about.

You basement
I tear the stems off apples before they are weighed and legitimize it by saying they are trying to cheat me by charging me for the parts that are not usable.

Employees are bad too.
Employees steal time. It's just 5min early. It is only a few minutes longer for break. It adds up.

It's always apple stems; no big deal.

Yea, sometimes i give the reasoning that, see..
1% of the shop prices are for thefts and non-payments. Which means im paying 1$ for every 100$ because the shop expects ME to steal.. So, if i never steal i will be overpaying, meaning i need to steal at least every once in a while at times where i wont get caught, just in order to secure me the right price for the goods im buying, i need to atleast steal 1% of the goods so that the shop doesnt shift someone else's losses on me. Its like a personal obligation..
The same reason why i dont buy stuff which has spent a lot on advertising or is overpaying rent viz, a grocery store in the centre of an overpriced commercial district. Who is going to pay for the advertising and rent me ofc, naw ill just buy from the local brand which didnt spend billions in advertising, id probably get more value for money..

As a kid I used to shoplift all the time. Until I got caught and they arrested me. As an adult I dont steal. I'm just not as brash as I used to be. Plus I have two sons. First of all I want to set a good example, but also, if I go to jail how will I protect them?

When other people steal I suppose I find it funnier than anything else. I'm certainly not angry about it. I dont really care if they get caught, although, I'm sure it would be more entertaining if they were caught and a scene was made. Maybe a fight between a store manager and some random! Maybe a large seasonal display could be knocked over as the combatants spilled into the automatic doorway while the other customers gathered to take cell phone videos.

But, whatever, man. Steal if you want. The thing, to me, is if you are willing to deal with being caught. Like, if you steal a guy's wallet and he kicks your ass (or worse), well that's your problem. You shouldn't have chosen that course of action.

I caught the bus to school and back every day for about 2-3 weeks without paying. Money was tight and it was that or not going. I just used an old ticket, slipped it in the machine, and walked through. It would beep, but I had really large conspicuous headphones blaring away so it was obvious to them that I couldn't hear it. By the time I was at the back of the bus it wasn't worth their time coming and getting me through all the other kids. Eventually a particularly determined driver came back and demanded fare, at which point I lost my nerve, but I never really needed to do it again anyway (finances got in order).

I sometimes buy two-way tram tickets and if I lose one (happens randomly from time to time), I don't pay, because it's not logical. I already paid and paying for trams is a personal thing :p, no one checks after hours when I travel. My personal conviction is that I did the right thing (the fare is paid upon buying the ticket, the act of physically having it is unimportant).
