Outlet for Ne

Do you think it's important that we have an outlet for our extraverted intuition? (or Ne/Ti, perhaps more accurately). Introspection was always a trusty one for me, but it's starting to lose it's magic now that I'm quite aware of the patterns I act in.

Absolutely. In fact, most of the outlets I have are specifically for Ne and Ti. Some of my favorites are introspection in the form of journal writing, detecting patterns in both myself and others, playing music, art, puzzles, reading, almost everything I enjoy. It all involves analysis, detecting patterns, and grabbing ideas out of the air.

Ok for me it would be:

- Music (ie, improvising, learning a new instrument or style)
- Sports (I can analyse performance, etc)
- Philosophy, although I'm a bit bored with this one now because I see it as kind of pointless.
- Learning something new (at the moment I'm finding car mechanics quite interesting)

I honestly have no idea how to let the Ne out. The suggestions I'd have seem more like distractions than actually stepping outside yourself. Maybe taking up a martial art? *shrugs*

Even high school teaching? That almost killed me, ugh. I think, just speculating, that INTPs might have a similar teaching style to the Taoists - the student has to be "ready". Teaching kids who don't want to be there, like in high school, you have to become a motivator and disciplinarian, and that just seems hideous to me.

We have the Arena and fun sections on the board for exercising Ne.....

In the real world... perhaps yes, INTPs could be good tutors or teachers, but I agree that it would have to be specifically when the student was ready (and also a matter of learning from each other one-to-one... I think every INTP tries to learn something of value from others in conversation, regardless of supposed social status/hierarchy?)

What about acting/performing?

I LOVE acting, especially improv. Although my improv teacher said I try too much to come up with great answers and don't just trust my instincts, so I guess in MBTI speak he was saying "stop using Ne so much!"

On that informal tutoring thing: I was teaching my brother how to drive and that was great.

Nah just normal driving, although those other types may be fun now you mention it. I just love being behind the wheel, the sense of control, the speed (sometimes, lol). Especially if it's a good car and it just glides over the road. I love running too, I guess it's kind of similar. And driving at night down a country freeway is one of the most serene experiences I can think of. I like having a car too because there's a sense of freedom, you can escape the world at any time. It's a bit of a common theme in pop songs, you know, get in the car and drive away (Pearl Jam Untitled a good one, or Missy Higgins Steer), there's a certain freedom but control at the same time.

Heaps of things I love about it I guess. Maybe it's a guy thing - you don't get the same thrill?

I get it too.

There's this point where you feel one with the machine. I love driving through the country at night - I always imagine I'm in a space ship and that distant clusters of houses or small towns are galaxies or constellations of stars... it is the most liberating experience... like having no boundaries, except you are responsive, answering every curve in the road... nothing holding you back and your mind moving this composite body of flesh and steel through space... effortless...

Driving really well... driving in 'the zone', is awesome.

No, he was saying stop using Ti so much, use Ne more!

I miss my bike (a scooter really) and the feel of wind in my hair. That's more Se, though. Things like drawing, writing, designing, playing music, inventing all sorts of zany stuff etc. are more like Ne.

Writing, and now that it has been mentioned - driving, are my main outlets for Ne, and possibly a bit of Ti mixed in.
My two favourite cars were a '68 Camaro 327ci/327hp and a 2000 Impala complete with a 'police package'. Both were powerful autos with excellent handling. I would end up on some secondary highway and open them up. The feelings of speed and control were exhilarating. I would get to that 'zone' where I, the car and the road were not separate.
Writng is my main outlet though. To immerse oneself in a world completely of one's own creation, to 'feel' the characters evolve their own actions and thoughts, to weave a story which emerges from one's own imagination - this is truly 'magical'.

Its become kind of a tradition with me and my freinds, ever since we watch scorpion king. I really wish we had recorded some of them, I keep meaning to do it but it all seems like too much work :P

I agree with the dancing in the room thing. I also love playing percussion. Or throwing out stupid fee-association ideas in conversation.

I love getting a look at new pieces of technology and working out how they work.

A while ago I spent a couple of hours working out just about everything there is to know about Dyson vacuum cleaners mostly just by looking at pictures of them. Then I spent a few more hours deducing just how little development there has been in competitors products over the past decade or two and just how shoddy their implementations of bag-less designs have been, and at the same time inferring about how performance between Dysons and other vacuums could differ.

I also enjoy imagining stories that pieces of music could be telling

I love Dyson vacuums. In a former life I worked in the vacuum department at Sears and was really impressed by just how well done the Dyson is.

If I ever purchase a vacuum, it'll be a (used) Dyson.
