As the time is ticking away, I am shortly supposed to somehow decide what I want to become and where I want to study for college. I have put of the topic until the last possible moment and am now finding my self in a terrible position: I have no idea where I want to go. I'm a bit interested in what kinds of jobs INTPs have so

post your major
your job
if you changed your mind somewhere along the road and changed majors
if you like your job
if it pays well :)

or

post what you want to become/ are studying to become

I'm in the same position as you. I know for a fact that I want to have an art related career, as it can or does combine all my interests, such as psychology, design, writing, music, film, computers, etc. However, I also have to consider what's more marketable. I'll probably end up doing graphic design, multimedia, possibly animation? I'll just stick to majoring in Art for now.

Lost, after wandering irresponsibly away from the
I'm studying Animation starting next year. I've always enjoyed making up and telling stories, and I like drawing too, so animation seems like it'll be a good area for me. It's also creative, and you can't get stuck doing the exact same job forever, because projects only really last a few years in general.

My major was a science one. The details are my own business.

I'm double majoring in cognitive neuroscience and physics. I enjoy psychology and basically all of the sciences... I am definitely not a business person and law makes me queasy.

I'm currently doing Web design/development; moving on to do a bachelor of Interactive Entertainment. Then when I'm finished enjoying my youth I'll move on to something in robotics, cybernetics or artificial intelligence.

I'm also studying/writing fiction and philosophy as hobbies.
I also intend to study some psychology as part of my writing and AI development.

Embarrassing area of science, now what could that be?

Also regarding Law,
I imagine INTPs would make great lawyers, provided you can accept amorality and indirect deception as part of the job.

Thread moved.

I hold a BSc. Majored in biogeography and have done further studies to qualify me in ecological design. The complex systems that sustain life on this planet interest me. The planet interests me. The cosmos interests me. Humans interest me.

So does almost everything else.

A lifetime of perpetual study would be my ideal occupation.

Actually I've made a habit of collecting qualifications I don't use.

As soon as my curiousity is exhausted I look for the next thing...

I've never held a 'steady' job and avoided getting stuck up the career ladder...

why am I rambling like this?

I guess just to point out that regardless of what you choose to study now, you will find new directions. Don't expect to 'become' your career. Don't imagine your future is cast in stone.

I've come to see activity in terms of vocation. That thing which returns to me over time; finds me regardless of what ever else I attempt to do...

Double majoring in biological anthropology and mathematics.

Edit: I'm interested in human evolution and ecology, medicine, genetics, biochemistry, public health, epidemiology, bioculture, language, kinship, cultural economics, and mathematically modeling problems in those areas.

Not embarrassing.

I am going to berkely and plan on majoring in molecular biology. Well that was my original plan...I've been debating taking computer science or theoretical mathematics instead or maybe psychology. Damn my INTP nature >_<!

Hi Juturna,

I'm a student, studying pure math. I started out wanting to study physics, but halfway through my first year, I decided to switch to math. I had many interests, but nothing is as beautiful as math imo, and nothing captured my interest in the same way. The thing that got me was learning about the infinite sums and power series, like for e^x etc. Actually e in itself pretty much blows my mind.

To answer your question, I LOVE it. I am now a grad student and want to be a professor. I feel that I really would've missed out on some sort of...let's say truths about life...if I hadn't taken this path. I can't think of a much better job than being in an academic environment surrounded by really smart people and able to just sit around and learn all day (or teach, I like to teach too).

So many times I think I'm living a dream come true. (except the times when I'm stuck on a problem! ;) ) Good luck finding your major! :)

Chocolate.

My degree:
Mechanical Engineering

My job:
Product Development (Design) Engineer, currently with flexible circuits.

Did you change your mind about jobs/degrees?
I started college intending to get two degrees: Physics and Astrophysics. I ended up in engineering because it was more "relevant" to the world somehow. I'm seriously considering returning to school to pursue a masters degree in Architecture.

Do you like your job?
It's okay, but it's certainly not my dream job. It seems to me that much of engineering ends up being project management and document management, with very little actual engineering ever being involved. This means lots of paperwork and meetings...

Does your job pay well?
I started out with a bachelor's degree plus some co-op experience making $52,000... so yeah, I suppose it pays well. Other flavors of engineering make more though, in particular Chemical Engineering and Computer Science.

Hmm I'm into Cognitive Development, myself.
I returned to school at the ripe old age og 50 and picked up a couple of degrees,
One was in Human Relations. So now I'm a Counselor as oppossed to a Clinical type...

Just plan on continuing your education for the rest of your life...

Business Major/ IT minor

Sold PC hardware and software, systems consultant, then systems administrator while that was still interesting. But I did it for the pay. I never really enjoyed it.

Did a lot of volunteer work.

Took a bajillion psych courses and got into a Masters of Social Work program.

Now I'm a therapist and substance abuse specialist on team that treats people with schizophrenia, bipolar, severe anxiety, etc.

As for paying well...a starting therapist makes less than I made 10 years ago when I was in IT. I don't know if I'll ever catch up. But I am definitely enjoying life more. It helps being a DINK.
