I wasn't sure whether to put this in the Gaming section or the MBTI section, but here it goes.

A month ago I was hanging out with my D&D and other pen and paper RPGs group, and I made them all take the MBTI test. The result: two INTJs, two ENTJs, one ENTP, and one INTP (me). Is this because most of my friends and the people whom I relate to are NTs (not enough data to prove this), or are NT types more drawn to these kinds of games?

Probably both, I would guess. The role-playing element appeals to the N function, and the system of rules and mathematical operations appeals to the T function. Also, "birds of a feather" and all that...

Hell yes.

My DnD Group is: INTP (me), ENTP, two INTJs, ENFJ, two INFJs, and two very developed ESTPs with an Ni fetish.

D&D takes two things that NTs live for and combines them: Creative conceptualizing, and analytical strategy.
However It's not just NTs, but NFs as well (Specifically xNFJs however). NF's are just as into the imaginative aspects of D&D, but because of their Fe (xNFJs) they take an affinity for the Role-playing aspects as well.
You can actually see this in their player styles, the NFs tend to lean on Role-playing, and the NTs tend to lean on strategy and game mechanics.

As an INTP that was a pretty well developed Fe, I like to do both.

One question. Are there any actual functional people that involve themselves in D&D? I was invited to one one and I must tell you the types of people within the group were very immature and childish. Very distasteful and to think I forgone the opera that night.

P.S. Girls say they like opera but really don't. Hence, don't take them on dates to the opera. Getting blotto at a bar works much better.

Have you tried not dating ESFPs?

One question. Are there any actual functional people that involve themselves in D&D?

Yes. My group (INTP, INTP, INTJ, INTJ, ISTP) consists of college-educated professionals in our early 40s, who own homes (or at least have mortgages and none of those ARMs, either), my husband and I have a child who is doing well in school, we have friends, activities, are close to our families, and generally get along very well in life.

We were immature when we played back in college. Isn't everyone immature then? I suspect D&D players in high school and college are a few years behind their peers in maturity, but there is excellent compensation later. We mature without becoming hidebound or losing our enjoyment of the wonder of the world. Find a slightly older D&D group if you don't enjoy your current one, or give them a couple of years. We also play RuneQuest, Traveller, GURPS, and Cthulhu, so don't limit yourself to D&D.

As for opera, try light opera and see if that works better for your dates. Gilbert & Sullivan maybe?

I agree that NTs are more likely to game than other types, based on my own experience. I am not sure what other types do, but I know watching football is very popular in the US.

It's a system, and an abstract one.

This makes it prime game and of interest to NTs. I started gaming around 1980, and the bulk of gamers I knew were either SPs who liked the "fun/crazy" interactions of gaming; or the NTs who liked to figure out, tweak, and game the system; or the NFs, who usually liked the acting/roleplaying aspects best.

*doh*
Uh... yeah, there are. Thanks.

But yes, it can also operate as easy escapism for the immature.

... I woulda gone to the opera, honestly. Which one did you miss? (I've seen Wagner at the NY Met, that was an amazing experience.)

Lost in my thoughts

My thoughts exactly. I'd say that the majority of the members on the character optimization boards would be NTs - I don't think the other types would be drawn into gaming the system as much/arguing about RAW vs. RAI as NTs :p. I think that getting to know the ins and outs of the system and seeing what could be made with it is the big draw for a lot of them; while I do like to play, I really enjoy creating the character and planning out the 'build'.

I don't think this is completely an NT thing. The group I'm with right now is INTP (me), INFP, ESTP, ESTP, INFJ, ISTJ, ENTJ (the DM is one of the ESTP's).

It's more or less a social thing. We're all pretty good friends, so I think if we were to actually do an adventure like this in real life we'd be doing alot of the same things - playing jokes on each other, helping each other out when necessary, etc because reducing it down to math and strictly following the rules is, well, boring.
