I just realized that we have no thread for movie soundtracks. Weird. Anyway, now we have. Please no game or anime soundtracks, we have an extra thread for that. I guess music from live-action series is also allowed.

I'm beginning with examples from some of my all-time favorite movies.

This track by the oddly underrated composer Basil Poledouris (who, in fact, did a lot of scores for Hollywood movies) might just be my favorite piece of any soundtrack. The whole OST is so good, it's probably the number one reason the 2011 remake will fail. It's pretty much impossible to top this one.

Clint Mansell is awesome.

Clint Mansell with Mogwai? Even better!

Obligatory Philip Glass.

Synecdoche, New York has a fucking awesome song. Especially the recurring dmi theme (no idea what that stands for). Here's a short film set to one variation of that theme.

YouTube - Good Morning Sunshine - A Short

Suicide Circle is another movie with an underrated soundtrack. Just listen to the music in the opening:

YouTube - Suicide Club Part 1

Howard Shore's best soundtrack isn't what you think it is.

YouTube - Howard Shore - Dead Ringers OST - Bondage

And of course, the two obvious ones:

YouTube - A Clockwork Orange (Intro)

YouTube - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly SoundTrack - Ecstasy Of gold

You revived this thread just to post one of the most famous soundtracks ever? I do like that song, though.

Ex Drummer:
YouTube - Millionaire - Mongoloid

The Pusher trilogy has a pretty kickass soundtrack too, just listen to the music in the opening:
YouTube - PUSHER PART 1 1996

Cannibal Holocaust's soundtrack is surprisingly excellent:
YouTube - Cannibal Holocaust Soundtrack Tracks 1, 2

Some of John Carpenter's soundtracks are really damn cool too:
YouTube - Escape From New York Theme (BEST QUALITY)

There is a certain level in Donkey Kong Country (I think it's one of the barrel climb levels) that has a soundtrack that sounds exactly like a certain section in Conan the Barbarian.

I'm going to have to re-watch the movie and then replay the games till I figure out where it is. bler.

This is the best movie soundtrack I've ever encountered.

Off the top of my mind, this one in Goodfellas is a good one:

YouTube - GoodFellas - 12 - Derek And The Dominos - Layla (Piano Exit)

Among recent movies, TRON: Legacy has some nice tracks. The soundtrack is made by none other than Daft Punk
Haven't seen the movie itself though, but here's some of the music:

YouTube - Tron Legacy - Soundtrack OST - 15 Solar Sailer - Daft Punk

YouTube - Tron Legacy Soundtrack - End Titles (Track 21)

I have no idea if the videos are blocked in some countries (works fine here), but you can at least find a version of the end titles music in YouTube with a slightly altered pitch for copyright reasons (under the video title Daft Punk - Tron Legacy (End Titles)).

Synecdoche, New York has a fucking awesome song. Especially the recurring dmi theme (no idea what that stands for).
I recently watched this. Nice music, I agree - and the movie itself is deliciously thought-provoking, as are other movies written by Charlie Kaufman as well.

Simon Rattle - Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

The video has images of the film, but I couldn't find one without. And this is my favourite music of the soundtrack.

A good number of these seem to be from horror films. I approve.

I havn't made my mind up on Cannibal Holocaust as a film either, but it's soundtrack is still amazing. :D

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man Soundtrack - Sand I - YouTube

Fantastic Planet. So good.

Alain Goraguer-Generique (Le Planete Sauvage) - YouTube

Another Alain Goraguer one:

Alain Goraguer - Au Delà De La Peur (1975) - YouTube

Every other Stanley Kubrick film has been named so I may as well add Eyes Wide Shut (with good reason though, I love this film):

A big time fan of Fantastic Planet, hip hop artist Madlib sampled the movie a few times(and even created an alter-ego based on the image of the pet-Oms, the ones wearing Om-detecting helmets during the de-Oming) with equal abstract weirdness used in the song/video.

Quasimoto - Come on Feet - YouTube

It's one of the only pieces of music I strongly remember from childhood, but I havn't been able to find a track of it :S

2x weird japanese or balinese polyphony inspired stuff:

1) the soundtrack of "AKIRA"

2) Kenji Kawai's "Ghost in the Shell"

3x electronic:

1) Blade Runner (you know it, don't you?)

2) Cliff Martinez "Solaris"

3) Tangerine Dreams' "Near Dark"

1) ethno genre, i guess:

gustavo santaolalla good tracks on "babel" and other movies. his scores are verry mixes. i deleted most tracks.

this one song of "Battle Angel Alita"

now more classical stuff:

richard einhorns's "voices of light" = the soundtrack for a C. T. Dreyer's Passion of Joan d'Arc, original

and for nostalgic reasons (i borrowed it from the library when i was a kid) jerry goldsmith's masada

Masada (USA 1981) - Soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith - YouTube

if i were to go further down the nostalgia road, i would have to dig out star trek soundtracks

Don Davis doesn't get enough credit for his audial branding on The Matrix movies, which involved some conventional + atonal scripting; mixing operatic, modern, and cross-cultural influences; and especially developing the theme. He might have been the best part of Matrix Revolutions, honestly.

Sunshine - John Murphy

Great movie and music, even if Murphy did cannibalize the same chord progressions in 2-3 other movies he did (Kick-ass and 28 Weeks Later, maybe more).

Yeah I wasn't overjoyed when I heard that. On the, ahem bright side though it'll lead more people to watch Sunshine.

Love 28 weeks later, I didn't realise Robert Carlyle was such a good actor. Imogen Poots suprised me with her acting. I thought it was going to be another teen wannabe, but to be fair, I enjoyed her performance. Rose Byrne as well, I don't know what it is about her, but <3
Let's hope they bring out a third!

I have the Matrix OSTs on my MP3 player, whilst I do agree it's some great music, not so sure it should be praised to the level you're at, lol.
I'm a purist with Movie OSTs though. :p

If you liked Sunshine, Moon (2009) + OST is another good one.

I actually thought about composing once, it's one of the few things that really effects me deeply. Procrastination is one of the other things though, lol.

Turns out I might actually be an INFP (with developed Ti). Music, Art, Writing are top of the list of careers. So maybe one of the few things that i've actually dismissed and not just got bored with, may of struck a note for a reason.

I'd hate to learn and understand then needing to dissect though, it would kill the magic. I don't think I would reach unconscious competence in one piece (no pun, lol). Maybe i'm just being instru-mental with sentimentality.
