I have noticed that INTPs tend to trail off towards the end of phrases, from time to time I've been trying to spot similar vocal traits in other people and pin them to specific functions but I'm not doing very well because I've nearly always got something else to concentrate on when I'm with other people or I just completely forget to pay attention.

There's three main things things I think could relate to functions; pauses between phrases, change in volume through a phrase, and the change in pitch.
Pitch may be more or less useless or unrelated as it's highly affected by accent.
Volume is difficult because I'm sure whatever someones type is they can control the volume of their voice.
A long pause should show that a person is using an introverted function, but is there any discernible difference between introverted thinking and introverted intuition for example.

I wish I could tell you something related to this, but I'm the only INTP I know (that I know is an INTP) and I don't pay attention to my own speaking voice in order to avoid noticing how appallingly high it is. If I started paying attention to it, to gather information, I would inevitably skew the information because I'm influencing it.

I do trail off toward the ends of sentences, though, and often don't finish them, leaving the last few words to be inferred. Volume... I generally speak softly. I don't try to speak softly; I speak in what sounds to me like a mid-tone, but I do wind up speaking softly, especially in an awkward/stressful situation. (My voice is just naturally quiet, too, anyway.)

Often a long pause from me means I'm working up to talking, though; it doesn't necessarily mean I'm thinking. I will manage to talk eventually; I just need to work myself up to it.

Chimera's typical internal dialogue:

"I really want to say this...I have to phrase it like THIS though...wait, no, I can't use that word, this is a better way to say it...okay, play it through your head a few times, so you can say it naturally and pretend you didn't think too hard about it......wait, crap, it's been too long, there was an awkward silence and that's adding to the stress of saying anything in the first place! But I really want to say--oh hell, screw it."

Sometimes talking just isn't worth the effort.

...i have no volume control. i can't tell you how many times people have had to tell me to shut the fuck up in a place like a library, or in class, or whatever. once i get going, i stop noticing things like how loud i am. i'm probably the worst whisperer in the world.

long pauses generally mean i'm trying to find the right word (Ti) or i'm trying to remember what i was going to say or something. i tend to work out connections and whatnot out loud, i don't have to pause for that (Ne?). but i'm a fairly social INTP, so who's to say how it is for everyone else.

i'm not sure i am an INTP. i might be a miscategorized F type---i'm not sure. but anyway---long pauses----don't know if i tend to trail. (well---don't always finish sentences, so yes.) often told my voice is too quiet.

I believe that voice and appearance might hint at a personality but are not defining. Of course some people will disagree here.
