Where would Scherlock be without Watson?
Where would Frankenstein be without Igor? (okay bad example)

More like Samurai and their Daimyo, on his own any samurai was merely a man, a rather shameful thing to be in the Edo period when people took great pride in being a part of various social structures, the more powerful the better. To be totally independent was to be nobody of relevance, and to be clear I'm not advocating a return to what was practically a caste system, I'm focused on the implicit meaning and purpose of being a part of something greater than merely oneself.

I guess you could say I'm thinking of a revised version of Frankenstein and Igor, instead of master & servant I envision a duality of madman & minion, the important distinction being in the definitions of both madman & minion.

The madman could be considered the more authoritive of the two in the sense that he (or she) would be dictating the path of their shared enterprise, but authority isn't the point of it, the madman is called a "madman" (or madwoman if applicable) because by the meaningless nature of the universe having a purpose of any kind beyond simply living is absurd, it is madness, it is to deny the irrelevance of our existence, and so it is also to carry a great burden. To be a madman one can't simply say "my purpose is thus", the madman must live it, embody it, be so utterly consumed by it that the role of a minion is justified, because without the assistance of a minion (or minions) the madman would surely be (metaphorically) crushed of the immense task he has set for himself.

Steve Irwin, the wikileaks guy, Micheal Moore, etc.
You know these people, not personally, indeed you may no know next to nothing about them, but you know what they do, they're madmen, not perfect madmen of course, that's an issue for a different thread.

The minion serves the purpose of the madman, not the madman himself, this is an important distinction to make because it means the minion is in as much a state of servitude as exploitation, indeed if a madman strays from their role it is the minion who will try to bring them back. Y'see the minion is the sane one, the relatively happy one, while the madman is consumed by their madness the minion basks in the glory of having a meaningful purpose, anyone who has done volunteer work will understand this, heck just being helpful brings a certain satisfaction.

There's also the pride of being a part of something, sports fans a clearly take pride in being a supporter of their chosen team, personally I can't help but mock this, there's no nobility in buying a t-shirt or chanting moronically, they're not a "part" of anything, they're just consumers.

What you seem to be missing is the up side of being a madman. It kinda reminds me of the guy from Trainspotting said about heroin:

" People think it's all about misery and desperation and death and all that shite, which is not to be ignored, but what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise we wouldn't do it. After all, we're not fucking stupid. At least, we're not that fucking stupid. Take the best orgasm you ever had, multiply it by a thousand and you're still nowhere near it."

A minion gets the sweet relaxed pleasure and content of a guy who smokes a joint a few times a week, while a madman get the full high of a heroin addict.
The rest of us are just clean, which may make for a healthy living, but we will probably feel a bit silly when we still die in the end.

Interesting idea/concept. So this is comparable to the scenario of the guy leading some organization (or idea) to do some random task, and the minions would be the people who follow not him but the idea he had to complete this random task.

So off the top of my head, this could be almost like Jesus in the bible and his followers, except they followed him instead of his ideas, stupid minions failed to be minions. The same with Charles Manson, the minions failed to be minions. These are more of a master servant relation.

Yes I compared Jesus to Charles Manson.

Also it appalls me that people compare the effects of drugs to almost everything. But on another note, it did make sense.

@ SpaceYeti, I am against someone having direct and implicit authority of someone else.

The madman and minion idea is a lot better than master running everything and servants bowing to his every move, like say the typical evil over lord.

Robin Hood and his dudes in the forest seem to be madman and minion material. They don't fight for Robin Hood, but for the idea he embraces.

It also seems to be worth mentioning the madman is typically an extrovert while the minion is introverted. Of course this is not always the case, but of my thoughts this is true.

Take Robert Oppenheimer and the men working under (or with) him on the Manhattan Project, madman and minion relation. Or at least from my knowledge it is that way.

Now any business man and the employees are not this relationship, it is the master servant relation.

Am I getting this idea right?

Instead of being appalled, you might try and think about why people do it. Might get some interesting conclusions

I think the relationship between minion and madman is a codependent one even though it may not seem like it. The madman needs a link to reality and comraderie while the minion feels respectable and needed.

Exactly.

The way I see it the world is one great big collection of minions longing for madmen to complete them, myself included; Jesus may have been a madman but after 2000 years there's really nothing left to cling to.

Exactly.

In summery, the world is just like Mechanisburg.

I don't feel the compulsion, sorry.

C'mon people, keep trying, surely one of us has the spark!
Tell us, what is your vision?

Anything will do, you just need to be passionate.

I'm sure what you describe is inherently true. It is actually more comprehensive than "madman and minion", everywhere you look, anything you consider, there is always a dichotomy. Good & bad, right & wrong, beautiful & ugly, powerful & weak ad infinitum. In the last year, I've grown to believe that the universe is in a constant balance.
Et quod est superius est sicut quod est inferius; As above, so below.
If man is inherently bound to a dual nature then both the microcosm and macrocosm are inherently bound to a dual nature. Which includes everything in existence.

This tendency (perhaps law?) can be applied to virtually anything. Love, physics, math, government, etc.

I have to agree completely with EyeSeeCold, I can't see how the world would work without opposites working so the other can exist.

I believe it is a law of balance, like how anti-matter and matter had to coexist to create our universe which we live, the great battle created so much more than just photons.

Which makes me wonder what is the natural affect that balances gravity...

Hum, interesting that matter can be the opposite of gravity.

Will need to process this a little. So even though matter emits a gravity, o my, but wait, matter can't have two opposites can it?

Here's a great quote for you lovers of reason to consider:

Lovers and madmen have such seething brains
Such shaping fantasies, that apprehend
More than cool reason ever comprehends. ~William Shakespeare
