For no adequately explained reason, I want to know about ISTPs (and yes, I've already read the profile on typelogic). Anyone here know any ISTPs? Anyone have examples of what they are like?

My dad is an ISTP. He and I (an INTP) are quite similar. He has a firm grip on reality and doesn't have too much patience for my freewheeling theoretical thinking. He keeps up with politics and goes above and beyond with finding the real news (as opposed to the half truths you hear on TV). He likes to start up political discussions at the dinner table along with a lot of other meaningful conversations which I really enjoy. He's also really tool oriented, and this has really shown in his former and his current job, an engineer and a dentist, respectively. He also has a lot more patience for learning practical skills. The rest of the traits are either identical to that of an INTP or could be easily confused with his vast maturity comparing to me.

I have a friend who typed (interwebz) INTJ, but I SWEAR is an ISTP. He's a builder. Not an architect, but a builder. He's almost... childlike, and has always built things (Built a hoverboard). He enjoys theory, to a degree, that degree being that he wants to put it into the real context, and, if possible, build a model. He is a wannabe artist, a magician in training, and is currently infatuated with books on theoretical physics (flawed explanations of hyperspace and all that)

My friend is an ISTP. He has a very strong appreciation of practical tools. He cannot be seen without at least 2 knives and a compact flashlight of unbelievable illumination, durability and battery life. He owns several, all only slightly different, all around 200$. His knife colection is 40+ and is within a price range of 200-400$ each. It is his obsession.

He repeatedly displays impatience for my methods of doing things, implying that he believes in a preset right way and a wrong way. He is intelligent, but consistently fails to understand hypothetical thinking or illustrative comparisons, only finding the flaws or inconsistencies that are irrelevant to the intended point. He is completely willing to use arguments that are true on the surface but fail under close scrutiny, hopeing those listening will not delve that deeply. He is immediately suspicious of any method that is not endorsed by an 'expert.'

The man enjoys creating and engineering tasks for their own sake. He also admires anything that is useful for the task, but will be perturbed by the most insignifigant imperfection of manufacture.
