I have been watching the proceedings with mild amusement, and I feel this is somewhat overdue. God(???) has seen it fit to provide me with this delicious amusement that is now unfolding before my eyes and therefore I shall not spoil it by taking sides.

The problem is that there has been a siesta among the competitors and I simply wish to push things to the next level...

Rules? I think so. Do we really want a community where it's okay to do whatever you want? Where no one is punished if they do something wrong? I know I don't. I follow the Wiccan Rede "An ye harm none, do what ye will". So as long as you aren't hurting anyone you have complete freedom. These should be rules that restrict freedoms only insofar as it restricts pain to others, be it emotional, mental or physical. It's not going to stop you from expressing your opinion.

But really, can't we all just band together in our heartfelt love for Oblivious? :)

Thank you for your input, and thank you too oblivious for this thread. So far you seem to be only only ones who want to state their opinions and are interested in this.

I am asking myself, why we have a channel at all. I don't see anybody (besides above mentioned) interested in this. Why are there no posts by people saying "I want trules, they should look like this" "I don't want rules, that's why..."...

Come on people, if nobody participates i have to assume nobody cares about this.

If there are two sides, going with the majority might be your best option. That way, you can minimize the number of people leaving the channel.

That was my Ti side being a jerk.

As for me, I'm going to hang out with the minority because I like smaller groups.

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression are always touchy subjects. If one holds freedom of expression as a valued guiding tenet to one's existence, then one must consider that this tenet is equal for others and a guiding force for them as well. Therefore, one's own freedom of expression includes the freedom of expression for others, even if that expression differs greatly, or even contradicts, one's own expression.

I, for one, consider any restriction on these two subjects deplorable but, allied with these is the responsibility to allow these freedoms in others. In other words, to respond in kind. If one person or group of persons dominates an area of a community designed to allow freedom of expression, then this person is, or these people are, imposing a censorship upon the community as a whole by their dominant actions and speech. To imply that any area of a community designed to allow freedom of expression be dominated by a presently evolved form of expression and determine it a 'norm' which needs to be defended, enforced and invested with permanance is to impose a censorship upon the community.
So much for the abstract concept of freedom of expression.

The reality of the Internet is that it is all words and images. There is no corporeal existence to it and therefore, no corporeal repercussions to one's actions. One may project only a small particular amount of one's essence if one so chooses. This is the nature of the medium.
But the Internet is also a microcosm of the macrocosm Humanity is. This macrocosm of Humanity includes communities. Communities are social, religious, occupational, or other groups sharing common characteristics or interests and perceived or perceiving themselves as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which they exist. Communities are those social constructs in which people with like or common interests gather to relate to others who share these common interests.
A community of hunters is not a community of vegetarians. A community of atheists is not a community of devout Catholics, Islamics, Quakers or Wiccans. A community of surfers is not a community of mountaineers. One may belong to both communities, but one does not discuss one's surfing abilities in a community of mountaineers for the mountaineers have little to no interest in surfing. One does not enter a community of vegetarians and start imposing one's views on the benefits of meat.

The concept of a community implies boundaries and definitions. A community is not the whole of the world. A forum such as this, and all of its extentions, is a 'meeting place' or 'communion place' for the purpose of those with common interests to gather and inter-relate in an area distinct from the whole of the world. A church is a 'communion place' for Christians. A mosque is 'communion place' for the followers of Islam. A pub is 'communion place' for those who wish to consume alcohol in a social setting with others. My own home is 'communion place' for those whom I consider friends and acquaintances.
All of these have boundaries, both physical and conceptual, and definitions. This is an aspect of human nature, the act of communing together in groups. Even at its greatest extention, a singularity, it is still a communion of humans distinct from the whole of Existence.

I entered this Forum because it is a virtual community of people with similar interests to mine and because I wished to increase my knowledge and understanding of what it means to embody and express the characteristics of the MBTI designation of INTP. I understand that there are INTP's with differing views than my own. Some may be Christian, some Atheist, some Buddhist... all differing walks of life and ages. I may discuss, and even argue, differences of opinion on subjects, but I understand that the majority of the people active here are here because they have INTP in common. This provides me with the opportunity to experience others who have the common ground of INTP yet may differ greatly on other issues. By conversing/communing with these other people, I can begin to see what it means to be INTP and Christian or INTP and Buddhist. This has the benefit of expanding my experience of life within the parameters I have chosen to restrict myself to in this situation.
If it was my purpose to increase my knowledge on any other MBTI designation, I would enter those communities, but I would certainly not impose my own INTP characteristics upon this other community of individuals with an MBTI designation different than mine.

This is my opinon which by no means needs be imposed on any other group or individual.
It is mine and mine alone.

Behind you, kicking you in the ass
Sometimes little snippets from the chat rooms are posted here on the forum and I just wonder what the attraction is. I still don't get it.

I voted no in the poll just as a kneejerk reaction to rules that I have. Discount it if you wish as I really should not participate in something that doesn't concern me. I swith my vote to 'I love you oblivious!' Even though I only kind of like hir. :D

I think the OP is making this question too binary. A more appropriate one would be: Which rules should we have?

Why not use this as a starting point and develop/add/omitt rules as the community see's fit

IRC RULES

1) Abuse of any op or user of the channel.

We will not accept any abuse at all. Members getting into personal arguments will be asked to leave/kicked if required.

2) Swearing - More discussions are needed.

3) Spamming / Flooding

Any form of spamming or flooding within the channel will result in a kick.

4) Hacking / Attempting to get opped / takeover channel

Any hacking / attempting to get opped / trying to takeover the channel at all in anyway will result in a permanant ban of any person trying and accomplices.

5) Illegal material

Distributing or requesting illegal material on the channel is strictly forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to; Illegal copies of software, distribution of MP3 files, movies (VCD/DivX), ie; any copyrighted material where the copyright is not owned by the user.

6) Racism / Nazism (Including Obscene Material / Inciting Hatred)

Propagating Racism or Nazism under any of the circumstances laid out, or distribution of any material will result in a ban. It is none negotiable.

8) Scripts

Only away scripts are tolerated in this channel - no graphics / big text / quizzes. kick/ban - hmm, I'm not sure about this one.

9) Name cloning

Name cloning will be a kickable offence.

Theses rules are to be stuck by at all times on IRC.

Again this is just a template just so we actually focus on something instead of randomly yapping away and getting nowhere. Typical of INTP's :P

[edit] Swearing in my opinoin is useful in some places as it gets the message across quicker at times. I am aware however that some are offended by such words. I think if they are used in moderation as opposed to randomly blurting out like someone with tourettes syndrome we will avoid less conflicts. What you really need is a sensible moderator who isn't biased and has the right amount of common sense to know when things should lie.

Those are some goo starting points, Hawkeye.

For everyone: These rules here are in effect no matter what. These are the network wide rules. We are only guests on the network, so we have to abide by their rules.

Right,I see that a new thread for the rules suggestion won't be needed after all.Since Hawkeye has posted his list here I shall do the same.
So here it is:

1.General rules for user conduct:

-Playful banter is allowed, playful insulting also.As long as all parties involved understand there is no malicious intent. This however needs to be made clear,to avoid misunderstandings. If members are in a dispute and lashing out at each other using profanities and personal insults, they will be asked to move it to a query. If one of the parties feels personally threatened by the dispute, they will seek op's attention and intervention in the main channel. If the perpetrator does not cease after a verbal warning,a kick will be issued,if this is also ineffective a ban in duration of 2 hours will be placed on his IP.

-Harassment of users is not allowed in any form. This also refers to the point above.Harassment in this case would be defined as efforts to insult someone(with malicious intent),making vulgar, sexual remarks about a user, trying to make a user leave the channel, with statements such as "No one wants you here","If you don't like it leave",etc (note that the definition of harassment is very broad and subjective,in any case a user who feels threatened should and must notify the ops about their concerns so that action may be taken).

-Any action resembling sybersex is prohibited.Users involved will be asked to move it to a private query or stop.If they do not obey a warning kick will be issued. If no result is achieved a IP ban in duration of 3 hours will be set.

-Excessive flooding and spamming is not allowed(i'm thinking say 30+ lines of spam)If a verbal warning or a kick has no effect the user will be banned in the duration of 30 minutes.

-Posting offenisve material(pornography, racism, gore, etc, again the definition of offensive is debatable and subjective). Also when linking to offensive,or potentially offensive content, the user is obligated to provide the channel with a warning about the nature of the link,so that people know they're opening the link at their own responsibility.

2.Who gets to moderate the channel?

My opinion is that the only people who should be given ops on the channel are people who already have power on the forum.Esentionally mirroring the forum's hierarchy.

Forum administrator = channel owner
Forum super moderator = channel administrator
Forum moderator = channel operator

Half operators: Do we even need them?
#intpforum.com is a small channel, that I don't remember has had a numer of over 25 users at any given time.I'm thinking 5-4 people are more than enough for moderating it.

3. Banning, kicking and the moderation of moderators:

-It should be noted that these rules apply to channel moderators as well.

-Kick function is a warning, not a toy and should be used accordingly.

-Bans may be set only for a valid objective reasons, that are made clear to the channel, and that the channel agrees with.

-Any permanent bans must be rewieved and agreed upon by the entire channel. That is,the intent to permanently ban a user must be disscussed in the main channel, with the other user's participation. It is not a decision solely based on the op's opinions.

-Any permamanent bans that have been set are a subject for reviewing by the community and may be revoced at any time. This entails disscusion, providing evidence to support one's claims, the agreement of the majority, etc.

-Staff on the channel is there to so to say "serve" the community,by making sure things run smoothly and effectively. They are not to abuse their powers and any abuse noticed by a user must be brought to the attention of the remainder of the staff and other users,so that appropriate measures may be taken by the staff to rectify that sort of behavior.

-An important point is asserting that ops should not act or make decisions independently from the will of other users.Cooperation is crucial. The channel is there for everyone, not just the operators.

4.Other:

-Caps.I really see no problem with them. Some people may find them annoying and see them as screaming or shouting on the IRC,but I fail to see any offensiveness there.Besides they are often used to emphasise a word or a point.

-Swearing.Again I see no problem there, unless it's used as a deliberate malicious insult.People will often went on the channel by saying: "FUCK LIFE!" or "fuck this lousy internet connection of mine."
The context is important here.

-Hawkeye mentioned scripts.I again see no need to prohibit those, unless we're talking about malicious and harmful scripts. This may also relate to bots on the channel.Which means that users should seek the approval of the staff and channel to connect a bot, given it'a good, nice bot.(I think that the network allows only 3 bots per channel anyway)

P.S.Phew,that's all I can come up with atm,and I feel exaused now.I'll probably edit it in the future as I get more ideas.I'd like input and constructive criticism by other members of the forum for mine as well as other lists.

Edit:Err,on a second thought,I might have gotten a bit overboard with this extensive list.In any case it's completely free to be dismissed.
Because I myself am a rules hater :p

floating...
Alrighty, I was somewhere possibly in wales for a while, and then I fell asleep, then I read for a while, but now I'm actually doing something and coming up with an idea of some rules/guidelines/whatevers.

alrighty then.... let's try this....

1. Can everyone in the channel please be told what's happening? When I was de-opped, I've got three different stories of why it was, and I'm still not sure why it happened. It's kinda annoying, and not even all the staff know why it happened. And we never get told if someone's been banned or anything, which is annoying.

2. No Cybering/Personal Insults unless it's clear to all involved that it's a joke. Sometimes, the conversation does pretty much border on cybering, and I'm fairly sure I'm not the only one who doesn't want to read that. I'm thinking a warning and asking them to move it to #risque or a pm would be the best way of handling it though. I quite often sit downstairs, as I'm on my sister's laptop, when I have to sit downstairs, or, if I'm on my ipod, I lose connection every five minutes if I'm in my room, so I really don't want to have my little sister walking in and seeing that.

3. Can we not have people abusing power? Or at least some immediate action when it is abused, such as a written warning the first time, then maybe if it happens again, they'll have their power taken off them, and then it can be discussed as a channel what to do?

4. No spamming, as in something like this in a short space of time...
<name> I H8 U!
<name> STFU BITCHES!
etc. Mainly because it has no purpose other than to annoy, disrupt conversations and is pretty much pointless.

5. If someone breaks the rules, they get a warning first, so they /know/ they've broken the rules. Everyone should be told if they end up getting a kick/ban/etc. and get told /why/ so that no-one ends up in the dark like before, which really isn't helpful.

6. Maybe Ops could be chosen based on their behaviour in the channel itself, rather than their status on the main forum. I know the two are linked, but a few people with power in the main forum (*pokes Lor as an example =P*) don't go on irc much I think (forgive me if I'm wrong, I'm not online 24/7, so it might just be due to time zones) so if they aren't as aware of another member of what's been happening, then they might not react as well as another person would. Personally, I'm fine with the current system of staff, apart from one bit...

6.5 Saffy should not be given power, she isn't very responsible, and is only tempted to abuse it, which means that she is unsure if she should use it at all, and so there is no point in her having power at all.

Yup, that's my attempt at rules. I wrote them while I was putting off my french coursework... so I shall shut up now. and I'm kidding about the last bit... =P
