I have heard (emphasis on dubious sources) that certain forms of autism and rocking back and forth are linked. This has also been portrayed in a few movies including autistic progtagonists..but, again, dubious sources.

I don't know about it being an "INTP thing", though. The only correlation I could see would be if the type of autism was more likely to test as INTP, and the rocking correlated with the autism. Which is an indirect, if any, correlation.

I would do online research..but I am far too, well, lazy at the moment...(classically useless excuse).

But good luck with your information search.

Thanks Chronomar for the response, I've been doing it all of my life, never thought much of it until now. Just a curious phenomena that i want to find the cause of.

Ok, I tried to upload a video but my webcam is being a little bitch. So I'll just type out my response.
Yeah, I've noticed that I rock back and forth too. Not as extreme as you it seems, though. I'll often find myself rocking when I'm daydreaming or lost in thought. Also, I tend to rock a lot more when I'm really excited about something. I move around a lot- tap my fingers, tap my feet, and dance around (when no one is watching of course). I'm not sure it's related to autism, but that's an interesting thought that I'll look into sometime soon.

Can you stop yourself from doing it?

I habitually rocked on my bed every night before sleeping up until about the age of 11-ish. I'm not sure why I did it; I'm not autistic or anything like that. My guess is that it was a self-soothing kind of thing. I was an only child throughout most of my childhood and my parents were often kind of distant, emotionally if not physically. Perhaps it was a way of dealing with being kind of weird and alone. Good times.

Even as an adult I will sometimes rock when I'm seated in a chair, but usually only if I'm nervous or impatient. It also happens when I'm hit with a surge of thoughts/feelings that I can't keep up with.

Rock and roll! woooooo!

yeah, i rock back and forth a bit too. not quite like that, but mostly when i'm bored, or i'm sitting on something like a bench or a stool. or when i'm uncomfortable.

anyway, i think i read somewhere about a link between INTx-ness and asperger's or mild autism, but i'm not sure. could be totally pulling that out of my ass. who knows.

YouTube- Apple commercial - Jeff Goldblum

Yeah no, I don't rock back and forth... But I do pace back and forth and rub my hands on my legs uncontrollably.

LOL! Totally don't know who he is but he's AWESOME! why do i remind you of him? :phear:

and sorry guys, I should really multi-quote but err don't know how... i'll learn eventually.

I used to rock when I was younger, enough so that it was generally known as thing of mine. I probably still do it a little bit unconsciously. I guess its soothing, or just sort of way to use up a certain kind of energy. It possibly relates to infancy, the way babies liked to be rocked and so forth.

Great, now I feel old. Jeff Goldblum is a comedic actor, from such movies as "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension," "Jurassic Park," and "Earth Girls are Easy," plus many others, of course. He often plays slightly nervous, genius-level characters, frequently in science fiction.

I move my hands around... I have to sit on them in class, which looks equally weird but at least stops me from fanning everyone.

Yup, I have the same problem, just as extreme, exactly how you have described it....exactly.

I bet it's mostly subconsciously right? and people walk by and might say "What are you doing?" or perhaps "Are you okay". and then you're all like "What? I'm fine? What are you talking abo-......oh........that..........:o"......(or not)

I actually brought this up in the forum somewhat but didn't push it because of extreme doubt that is actually would be and INTP thing. But according to this thread there at least seems to be some kind of movement problem amongst a good number of INTPs, at least on this forum anyway.

I'll just bring this up in a video :D

Glad that i'm not the only one!, I would say that i act pretty much the same way as you stated in your post (I put it in bold). Lol maybe i actually do have Apsergers' and trying to pass it off or atleast make it seem less worse by attaching the INTP label to it, but eh, it's not really that big of a deal, social awkwardness is a good thing right? :D:cool:

I don't rock, no, but I do other things. Such as tapping my foot to some beat in my head, or tapping my fingers against my leg. I've done it for as long as I can remember and tend to not notice it much until someone points it out to me.. Usually someone saying how distracting it is when their trying to focus and there I am tap taptap tap tap tap taptaptap... Yea..

On the subject of an Asperger's/Autism connection, I'm not sure. However my little brother who has Asperger's used to rock himself back and forth singing to himself every night until he fell asleep. I also suspect him of being an INTP (ok, maybe more like hope he is because that would be awesome:phear:)

I am an INFJ and I rock back and forth at lot as well; also my leg is fidgety and pace the floor a lot. I think it acts as an outlet for the energy that I get from ruminating over philosophical questions or from focusing internally in general- with introspection, with imagining things, et cetera
