I've been wondering how we are with pets, and which kinds with tend to favor.

I like animals and I tend to get along well with them. I currently I don't have any pets but when growing up we had a couple of cats. I think cats would probably suit us better than dogs since they are typically a lower maintenance pet.

i love me my kitty. technically a lazier person's pet which suits me...no bathing required, no walking required , (he hates to leave the apartment) and he goes where he wants to go without a lot of fuss or noise...but then i only have one cat and one is all i'd probably ever want at a time

I've dreamed of owning a tiger or something very large since I was young... getting it just after birth so I could raise it physically myself, so I could feel safe around it after I grew up. Personally I just want something like a kid without the responsibilities of owning a kid, and I love big cats.

I wasn't sure whether this was "cats" or "exotic/other," so I went to my backup pets--a hedgehog first, then a ferret. This tipped it out of the "cats" category :D. I love animals... people thought I'd become a vet when I was younger... but I don't care for them that much.

I think anything that would normally be a wild animal qualifies for the exotic/other. Lets keep "cats" to the housecat variety. (although some would argue that you never truly tame a cat)

On that same point of exotic pets, I've actually considered a raccoon for a pet. I wonder how trainable they would be. Hopefully enough so that they dont wreck my stuff and that they do their business in the proper place.

ha ha...that's funny, i had a racoon that used to visit me outside my window in queens of all places....they kinda mew like cats , and they really seem to pay attention to you when you talk to them, unlike cats...just keep your garbage lids closed and hope for the best ;)

Do you really have a practical reason for everything you do? Also, a lack of practical reasons to do something is not necessarily a practical reason not to do it.

I like pets. They're nice to have around. They're like good friends, but with not as much work. You can tell them anything, hug them anytime, have them keep you company, with zero socializing.

i guess what i mean is that i've weighed the pros and cons of having an animal. i hate picking up dog shit and emptying litter boxes, i barely make enough money to feed myself much less an animal, much of the day the animal would be left home alone while everyone is at work, which would just be cruel to the animal. and on the pro side, i do LIKE animals (i'm not an animal hater lol) and companionship would certainly be nice, but knowing myself, i don't know how much of that companionship i would return.

I have a slightly bipolar cat, and I love her. I think we have similar personalities.
I also have a chinchilla. Ugh, that thing.... I can't handle caged animals that you have to set aside real time for. Like the cat, I can just pet her and walk away. The chinchilla I have to clean up the whole bathroom, haul her cage up three flights of stairs, then afterwards I have to somehow get her back into the cage. And the half hour that she's out I am sitting there doing nothing (or listening to MuggleCast). AND she'll live for another fifteen years. Should of just bought a rabbit, they cost about a hundred dollars less.

I like cats. A dog is just too much work. You have to be at home a lot to be able give them the attention they need. Cats are great though: they'll come sit on your lap and be affectionate whenever you're around but they don't care if you go on vacation for two weeks. Plus they're funnier than dogs. I've never had a fish before, but I don't think I'd mind it.

I like cats and dogs, but I want a snake. Preferably a non-venomous one. Little effort, much cuteness, and I can freak out/ scare away unwanted visitors once in a while. :)

Snakes make great pets!

I've kept a diamond python, white-lipped snake and tiger snakes. Raised tiger snakes from babies.

Also kept various other reptiles at times.

But that's all ancient history now. What I really liked about them was how fluid they were. Absolutely mesmerising.

I have a cat, and I've named it Garfy after Garfield because he's red & white. I could say I 'love' him, though the meaning of love for me is still ambiguous. Nevertheless, I care for him - though I'm lazy and forget to put him food and water and because of this my parents take care of it.

He always scratches me and bites me, especially on my legs and because of that I have to wear long socks while walking in the house. But he's adorable nevertheless - like a little lion - for him is just playing though for me friends at school think I've turned emo because of the scratches on my wrists and arms

I was wondering about pets and their relationship to you in the Type Relationships.

Are they your ally or companion:

Companion: similar modes of expression: bear each other's company well

The INTP companion is the INFP Dragon

This would favour the exotic and unusual pets, which happens to be the case for me.

A Snake (ENTP) would not be wide of the mark. This comes only the type realtionship as Pal.

Pal: work and play well together: minimal natural type conflict
My choice is marine invertebrates.

Cats (ISFP)

Type relationship to Eagles (INTP):
Enigma: a puzzle: totally foreign in nearly every facet

Type relationship to Hawks (INTJ):

Supplement: like Pal, but functions are farther removed: each can add to the other's strengths
INTJ Companion is a Dog. I do not actually like Dogs myself.

I was thinking of having a Turtle or Terrapin and I like Hermit Crabs. These would be nearest to INFP.

Three dogs, two cats, most of them "rescues" to some degree or another. Learning to speak dog is a lot of fun, especially with an overwrought and badly mixed up border collie that missed out on valuable socializing time as a puppy.

I like my dogs much more than I like many people I've met.

There seems to be little point in learning to speak cat. They make themselves clear without any effort on my part.

Sometimes cats choose humans. I had a Cat who was a frequent visitor, but it was a tramp, even by Cat standards, it would sleep on any doorstep, waiting to be let in.

I like dogs, because they're intelligent enough that you can feel a real connection to them. I love cats, too, though. I'd hate to have to look after a dog, so I guess realistically I'd have a cat. Plus it destroys me when they die, so I probably wouldn't get one in the first place.

What is a Bearded Dragon?

I suppose I will have to look it up. Sounds like a kind of lizard (Not a proper Dragon INFP) but probably a ENTP.

Type relationship of Lizards & Snakes (ENTP) TO INTP is Pal.

PS: Is this small talk? The Lady Priest asked me what was in my trousers and I said it was a Snake.

I would have replaced all of his shaving cream with itching cream, and stolen his SS number and bought thousands of dollars worth of electronics on ebay.
Oh, and a new cat.

Not that I'd actually do that...

Well, we don't have any proof exactly, but my dad went over to his house and was gonna ask him about his constant bb gun shooting and the dude ran in the other direction. We looked for the cats body but couldn't find it. If I saw that my cat was dead with a bullet in it, I would have burned the losers house down! I'm pretty sure he did it though.

was on vacation last week (camping near lake michigan) and one of my friends has 2 dogs, which he brought along. seeing how incredibly irritating it was to take care of them (and one of them is even well trained) it just reinforced my aversion to owning a pet.

I have always wanted to have a cat, but I am very allergic to them so I got the most cat like dog I could find (a German Shepherd) and named her kitty. I also have 2 Great Pyreenes dogs and an old dog that smells bad. I think I have a wild ribbon snake living in my pond outside.

Cats. They are fluffy, they don't smell bad, they are INTPs themselves, they aren't noisy, they don't require much attention (as contrasted to dogs), they are really good pets to have with you while reading.

Unless your cat is at the rush-up-and-sink-claws-into-nearest-leg age.

This is usually a kitten thing, but they sometimes retain the behaviour.

Have always been a cat person. I've always had at least 2 cats in my house, at most I've had 4. I recently got a young black cat (just out of the kitten phase) who is the most mysterious and intriguing animal I've cared for yet. She is quiet and almost thoughtful, alert, and only somewhat aggressive (usually only if the dog is around.) And she is completely attatched to me. She sleeps either in my arms or on my stomach at night, but won't even let anyone else touch her. It's a privilage to be so close with her.

My dog is a fat noisy beagle. There isn't really much interesting about her.
I've recently decided that the one thing I really, really want as a pet is a big dog. Such as a German Sheperd or a cross between a wolf and something. I plan on getting one when I have my own place.

I get to work with birds of prey every weekend at the rehabilitation aviary where I volunteer. Owls, hawks, and a bald eagle...I get to work with them whenever I like, training them, caring for them...we also have half a dozen snakes there as well. It's amazing.

Cat's are my absolute favourite animals. There are many reasons, but they just are. (And my parents had horses since i were in my mothers womb, they now have some dogs, which are ok to get around with, but somehow they are way to social for me, they at one time had some goats, these were terrible^). But with a cat i can identify with. They are lazy hedonists as i am. They are nice animals, they don't stink, they are quite intelligent and empathic, they like books (to lie upon :p) and i seem to be somewhat of a cat-whisperer (because nearly every cat i encounter likes me, even if everybody else just get ignored or scratched).

Dogs can be nice (i mean real dogs, with a certain height :p), but they are so social (pack-animals), they require constant attention, they are hierarchy -obsessed (the dog my parents have at their stables, a spanish wind hound, likes me the most, although i am the most strict with him and oftentimes reprimand him, mostly when he is lurking around the cats. I find that attitude a little bit strange) and they stink. But hey, it's all IMO, in my opinion. Everybody should see for him/herself how to get by with which animal.

I've heard that hawks are best handled by quiet people, who move in a steady deliberate manner. Is this true?

I used to have a pet snake; they require a respectful manner and a steady heartbeat. A friend of mine wanted to see its teeth, so he tried to "persuade" it into opening its mouth.
In a sudden burst of speed and poetic irony, it bit him; he never did see its teeth.

Bloody funny (lots of funny and lots of blood)

Apparently I'm un-INTP-like... Dogs are my favorite pet. Of course, this may have something to do with the fact that my parents had a dog when I was born (died when I was 16), and I've never been without a dog (except from 16-17).

I don't really like small, yappy dogs, hamsters and other boring rodents, or fish (also boring). Cats are okay. Birds and snakes are interesting.

I grew up with dogs and for a long time I didn't want a pet as an adult because they are so needy and sociable. Not for me. A couple years ago though, I rescued (snatched) a couple 3 week old kittens from the rotted out log they were living in and made them my own. Cats are the perfect pet, hands down.

I had the same cat for 16 years, since before my first memory till after I got out of high school. I love cats. When I end up at someone's house with a cat, they are wonderful companions when I feel overloaded because I can justify my anti-socialness by playing with them. Not playing like with dogs. With most cats you're continually asking permission to play with them, which I can identify with. With a dog, you have to tell them to stop multiple times before they get the hint.

I may get a dog and a cat when I have a family just in case I have an extraverted kid (yes, pity them :( )

I've always been interested in birds of prey. Not the prey birds mind you... they seem too wired for me (probably a necessity when you're avoiding the birds of prey). I think I could get into falconry if I had the money to get started.

Cats are cool. Dogs are okay.

My grandfather had a male llama that was pretty aggressive. Since my grandpa is the man he was able to approach it easily, but the rest of my extended family were kinda terrified by it. I think they just read too many stories about llamas kicking or biting.

I really did use the INTP chameleon aspect- I approached it with no expectations, just observing the animal, and showing similar actions to whatever it did. It would approach, I would approach.

The best part was when I finally got close enough to the llama that I could stroke and scratch it's neck. Mr. llama returned the favor by rubbing his neck against my shoulders and chest.
PeterLlama.jpg

(That's me and Mr. Llama)

ANYWAY, I remember reading one of the INTP profiles that explained why INTPs can communicate well with animals. I did searches in Paul James' profile and the PersonalityPage.com profile, but I didn't find anything. Anyone remember?

Can't find it. On a side note, the US FDA has apparently decided cloned animals are suitable for human consumption. Huzzah for wilfing.

I love dogs-- big ones like huskies, alsatians and collies. (We have a collie right now.) I wouldn't mind a cat, and a snake or a big lizard would be a brilliant pet. ...I love all animals, actually, but a dog is a must for me. I don't have any close human friends, and those I do have a routinely creep out a lot. I seem to annoy my family a lot, too. So it's nice to have someone who's always glad to see me. (He jumps up and sniffs my face like mad wile wagging his entire body, not just his tail... good old Jack. He's as tall as me when he stands up on his hind legs. ;))
