So that's what the 'Introit' part is for. Telling everybody what I'm like. Ah jeez...

I'm 18, and I think I know my calling in life: I'm a storyteller! I write, but I also plan to study animation in college and I'd like to make my own comics. Some people don't believe me when I say I'm a girl.

I'm here because I like debating, but everyone around me thinks I'm just arguing with them. They don't get the idea that I want to argue intellectually: they ascribe emotions to it that I never put there. It's nice to be somewhere where I can actually argue and say things without being shushed and/or agreed with to shut me up.

INTP, 5w4, member of British/irish Mensa. So.

...Hi. :phear:

That's one of the bigger reasons why I keep posting. Everyone around me in real life takes my attempts at intellectual discussion as belligerence. And I probably shouldn't have picked "Fernando" of all things. It was a random username as I only intended to dabble around for a few minutes last year and never be seen again. As you can see, I was sucked in. And it doesn't help that my thinking isn't stereotypically female either, so it's hard for people to tell I'm female online.

It's hard for people to tell I'm female IRL, apparently. Gah.

This has been bothering me since i first saw your avatar. Just a pair of glasses on a floor, right? Part of my brain wants me to think it's a cat.

Welcome Sagewolf. Debating is a lot of fun. I once had a friend that would debate all sorts of random things with me. He said I was his official "poker of holes" in his theories. Unfortunately we're across the country from eachother now and that was the end of the debates.:(

Anyway, nice to meet you. Happy debating.

A formal introduction deserves a formal welcome.

Welcome. (...dressed in tux and top hat ...leather, of course)

The dialectic is why I remained. Being able to formulate coherent thoughts and have them torn to itty bitty bits by individuals of greater intelligence...

Ah, be it ever so humble....:D

EDIT: Oh, and I like your Leo Rosten quote. I believe it is mostly why I write.

Hi sagewolf, you have picked the most excellent screen name I think I've seen. Wish I'd thought of it - but then I wouldn't have used it, because I'd have to live up to it.

Maybe as a name for a character in a story though...

@Fernando: Ah. Is that why i see a cat? In sunglasses? Because there's a tail in it? My brain makes weird leaps of logic sometimes...

@Anling: Thanks for the welcome (your signature is great :D). When I argue with my friends I think the problem is that they're arguing their views and want to get me to concur. I just want to argue and have to formulate logical arguments. So they get annoyed with me, because they can't convince me of anything. I just keep going. Like the battery bunny.

@EB: *Bows in response* Thank you. Hahah-- And then we tear their arguments to itty bitty bits in return. We seem to see this as a mark of respect and friendship or something. (I think the Leo Rosten quote very accurately describes why I write, yeah. The Thomas Mann quote is how I write-- sometimes by doing faceplants into the keyboard and editing it until language appears. )

@love of reason: I love my screen name. It's mine on Fictionpress and Fanfiction.net... but some jerk on Lj stole it from me. *sob*. Everyone who knows me IRL knows... the wolf thing is an obsession. ^^; There are more wolf doodles on my notebooks than actual work.

Welcome! Although, if anything, you should be welcoming me...
Hehe, not to worry.

I know what you mean about wanting to argue intellectually. I have very few people I could do such with in the offline world. Which is why I [have started too] come here; it's an intp trait to be like a chameleon, so if someone brings up a serious question, they're gonna have a serious debate, and it's never along the lines of "What a stupid question" or anything insulting (from what I've seen).

So I'm not insane! *pauses and thinks about what she just said

I'm not as insane as I thought.

@Fordy: I know; everything is treated so seriously! It's great! (Not that the discussions aren't fun too: we like jokes. Sometimes they're very very bad... :D) Welcome to you too!

...and what a part it is!

My own amusement of course!

Although, I fear I have become nothing but a clown. I've noticed lately that even when I post something serious, it is almost as if I posted nothing at all.

Maybe I'm just here to drum up the ratings...,.... What's that?........ There are no ratings for an internet forum?..............No advertising you say?............... Shit!

:D

Fool: also called jester, a comic entertainer whose madness or imbecility, real or pretended, made him a source of amusement and gave him license to abuse and poke fun at even the most exalted of his patrons.
Encyclopedia Brittanica, 1995 ed.

Throughout human history the persona of the Fool and his mythological equivalent, the Trickster, has played an essential role, the role of change. Just as the Fool can force change in social situations with his license, his mythological counterpart, the Trickster, is the central force of change in the world.

The Norse god Loki is the instigator of conflicts. The resolution of conflicts brings the new, the better. Loki is the destroyer of the world, but the world springs new and better out of the ashes. Like the seasons, it is part of the cycle, not an end forever. Loki is crude, dangerous, and subversive.

The complex role of the Fool. The Fool provides truth, balance, play, recreation, destruction, creation, change. The Fool is the destroyer of our well-ordered world and the creator of the new through play. It is by change that we are made new. We are all Phoenixes, capable of rising out of the ashes, if only the destroyer will bring us change.

Let the Fool lead the way.;)

Wow! I appreciate that, it's encouraging (hears collective gasp from all those reading this). If I had known being called a fool could be a good thing I would have been in far fewer fights over the years. I like the idea of being a trickster. Reminds me of my college days. Oh, the crazy stunts I pulled in college! Now who should I target next.......... :D

Oh, and hi, sagewolf. I'd say I'm sorry about messing up your thread but I'll only do it again, and you'll be very disappointed.

You're welcome.:)

We all have our moments at being a Jester/Trickster, but it takes a special kind of person to emulate and embody this archetypal role.

I think your present avatar expresses the Jester/Trickster image quite well.

A Mime is also in this category and disturbs the status quo by his silence and mimicing of another's actions.
This would be difficult to do, though, on a Forum where words are the medium.;)

I actually go by 'Loki' on a handful of forums.

Yeah, the thign about tricksters is that while they have no point, their impulsive actiosn are usually the center of all things good or bad....

Ahhh... I wish I knew what the heck I was. I don't know what I am, although I think I show aspects of the Fool sometimes. And the Fool isn't useless! The Fool alerts us all to the absurdity of life and challenges us to challenge it.

...Yeah. Off I go. No1d01ts, do you see what I'm like? You can't mess up anything I do. It's already about as bad as it can get. xP

*cue Melkor's theme song*
*cue Narrator's voice over*

"Will loveofreason ever find true love with Melkor?"

"Is there a secret tryst between NoID10ts and Melkor?"
"...between loveofreason and NoID10ts?"
"...between NoID10ts and the little blue Pangolin at the City Zoo?"

"Will the Narrator ever get a real life beyond being a disembodied voice?"

"Tuned in tommorrow for the next installment of The Stomach Turns."

...and now a word from our sponsors.
