In an Attempt to Type Myself

I have failed. Despite the various online tests, studying of Jungian functions, and half-assed self-given explanations, I have failed.

I don't know what my type is.

So, the purpose of this thread is for you all to help me. Ask me questions, ask me to explain something, or just give your opinion. I've interacted with a lot of the people on this forum, so most of you should have a general idea of how I think, and how I act.

I know that online interactions are not as easy to do, but honestly the only people that I know that have any knowledge of typing are the people here.

I have my latest (and hopefully most correct) typing of myself stashed away in my head. We'll see if it matches up with any of yours :p

As far as tests go, I've tested as: INTP, INTJ, INFJ, ENFJ, and various others.

As for questions, anything is up for grabs that might help indicate my type.

I hope someone has some sort of interest in this, or can explain what could have happened to me the other night. I will recount my actions and trains of thought as accurately as possible, and then explain what I think happened; obviously I want anybody's opinion on the matter.

First, a little bit of background on me. As one can probably assume, I am usually quite reserved, laid-back, shy; your typical introverted person (did the name give it away?) In addition to this, I am what I will call a "heavy-thinker". I like to take an idea and turn it over and over in my head in an attempt to perceive the idea in a different light. Keep this in mind as you read the story below.

^Definitely INTP, what makes you think not?

Make a video of yourself talking and post it.

Easiest way to type rather than determining through an array of convoluted questions.

Also, why are you so concerned with your type? Just for the sake of knowing? Self worth?

I don't know how to work the webcam on my laptop (not even sure if I have the right drivers anymore since the C: drive broke).

I'm interested in my type because it may assist me in understanding how my mind works and what I may need to work on.

Being introverted doesn't equate to being INTP; there are several other types that enjoy deep thought and thinking.

Also, I'm almost positive that I use Ni, which is not a main function of INTP.

I really think I'm 50/50 ISTP/INTP. Maybe you are too!

I don't see you exhibiting a preference for F, for some reason.
As for the J/P distinction, I'm not clear on it yet. To me it boils down to how open-minded you are about new AND familiar experiences.

I would actually still be skeptical. (..surprisingly I once came across an ENTJ that via text sounded really Ti/Fe..) People of any type have time to compose their thoughts better in text, according to whatever memes they ascribe to, but via video they don't have an opportunity to mask themselves so it's instantly revealing.

~

Also, how does one's C: drive break yet still allow for the use of one's computer? The C: drive is what has the system-32 files, and even I.E. no? Your computer wouldn't even be able to start up without the C:, let alone browse the web... (iirc). Try going on youtube, click "Upload" then it'll give you an option to use webcam. If you have one it should automatically detect it and utilize it. :) Hope that helps..

- I doubt the validity of this statement. Specifically with regards to the "ease of typing".

That is all.

Many INTPs think they have a strong Ni as a way of describing their Ti-Ne combo. OP talks in a very structured matter-of-fact way which is how Ti sounds.

I don't much have special respect for people who anchor their arguments on appeals to authority, or change their argument 180 degrees for such a reason, whether that 'authority' is me or anyone else. Not that I understand why you'd even do so for me...

Perhaps you're just mocking. -.-

gasp!

AUBURN,

Fine then. Be a stereotype.

Here's the way I see it:

1. I'm brand new to this

2. I have no idea what I'm talking about

3. I like smart people and regularly defer to their better judgement when I am not well rehearsed in the subject matter.

4. I liked your post, it made sense, it clarified some things. It elaborated on the initial post that I denied validity to for no reason.

5. You claim to be very old, I usually respect old people because they have lived so long without dying.

6. Why swim against the current when you can barely swim? <-- this is a metaphor

7. I have no good reason for this comment:
- I doubt the validity of this statement. Specifically with regards to the "ease of typing".
, which happens to specifically be the one that contradicted what you said.

8. When people say things that make sense, I tend to agree.

ERGO,

I rescind that comment out of respect for Auburn.

Auburn wants to be weird about it, that's his business.

I don't much have special respect for people who anchor their arguments on appeals to authority, or change their argument 180 degrees for such a reason, whether that 'authority' is me or anyone else. Not that I understand why you'd even do so for me...
Think it through again and tell me if you still can't see where I'm coming from.

"anchor my argument on appeals to authority" that's a good one. What do you think I am a six year old? I'm a man.

You have offended me because I deferred to your better judgement on a topic you know more about than I do. I can "just tell" you know more than I do because you're more fluent in conversation about the topic.

You value stubbornness over this?

My Fe comes out when you get to know me. I have somewhat of a strange exterior (slightly expressionless in the face, pale, long-haired) but a warm interior and fuzzy feelings, if you get to know me. To be honest, I even surprise myself with how emotional I can get sometimes.

I know next to nothing about computers.

I gave it to my uncle, who fixed me up with a new hard drive and backup (mine was previously not backed up) and 'reset' everything? I don't really know how much of it works.

All I know is that I don't have the drivers for either graphics, and now apparently for my webcam either. I've tried to figure out what to do but I know I will inevitably just fuck up, and the possibility of my computer going haywire again is enough of a deterrent to leave it to someone who knows what they're doing. My friend is a software engineer, and I'm having him take a look in a couple of days.

You can torrent WinXP very easily these days.
I'm using Windows Ultimate, methinks?

Ah, my apologies.

Yes, I tend to leave my sentences very short; I find ambiguity as a great means to get out of sticky situations (ie you can pretend you were saying something else if someone gets offended/ finds error in your logic).

Coincidentally, Ti is a function of INFJ (which is what I currently think I might be). Apparently this makes an even stronger case for such an assumption.

Like I said, I don't know how :slashnew:

If someone could give me some help in how to get my webcam working, I would be more than happy to oblige. If not, it may have to wait till Thursday (which is when I will have my friend take a look at my PC).

I'm worse at speaking than at typing; I constantly stutter and pause, trying to think of what I am trying to say. Not sure if this is indicative of my type or simply poor speaking skills :phear:

Also, how does one's C: drive break yet still allow for the use of one's computer? The C: drive is what has the system-32 files, and even I.E. no? Your computer wouldn't even be able to start up without the C:, let alone browse the web...
By getting a new one, of course!

Read above; a few months ago my uncle installed a new hard drive for me. The reference to the C: drive breaking was to indicate that I lost all my other drivers as well, I guess, which is why I don't know how to utilize the webcam atm.

Try going on youtube, click "Upload" then it'll give you an option to use webcam. If you have one it should automatically detect it and utilize it. :) Hope that helps..
I tried, but it isn't working :slashnew:

Google your computer problems, they tend to go away after you fix them.

Comps are like the universe, things get worse not better. You have to add energy to the system in order to fight chaos and restore order.

But you can't add energy to the universe. So computers are more like cars.

Oh right! You said you have a friend to do this for you, okay then never mind!

So INTJ huh? *nodding with sympathy

You likely need to reinstall the driver for the webcam. It should be free and searchable via Google, a la "laptop model X webcam driver download."

I disagree with the video being necessarily the way to type people accurately as per "but via video they don't have an opportunity to mask themselves so it's instantly revealing."
Some people are such good actors that they present themselves in such a way that does not reveal their true selves. It might be good for typing INTP's and INFP's etc, though.

I steadfastly refuse to believe any typing of actors, politicians and others in the public eye which are based on some video of them giving an interview. There are SOME interviewers that seem to be able to disarm their quarry and get the "talent" to reveal their true selves - but they are rare.

Besides, I would never post a video of myself as I like to be incognito :smoker:

This type of objection to video-typing is way too broad..

The variables that determine what footage is reliable and what isn't is more subtle than "they're a celebrity, therefore they're always putting up a mask". That type of umbrella answer is flawed in:

  • Assuming all celebrity figures wear masks & are not their real selves.
  • Assuming all celebrity actors keep their character masks on, even offstage.
  • Assuming there is no way to tell when a person is faking-it, and that it will inescapably interfere with typing them.

It is possible to identify which people are 'faking it' and which people are having a conversation with the interviewer in the same manner that they'd have it with anyone else. People give off cues *even* when they're faking it.

Like, an ENFP trying to play-up being an ENTJ will give off different cues than a real ENTJ. An ENFP pretending to be an ENTJ will appear like... an ENFP pretending to be an ENTJ - not like an ENTJ.

Just like we can tell apart a human child pretending to be a velociraptor. The way types "put on masks" in itself is unique and they can never fully conceal themselves because their method of acting itself is flavored with their type.

Fe types are particularly prone to wear masks but the thing is, that in itself is a giveaway. When a person is excessively adapting their communication style to the other party, and does so with warmth, it indicates Fe-accommodation. So in trying to conceal themselves, they reveal themselves. There are several other examples of how other functions give themselves away too. o.o

@Montresor

Actually, it seems like a lot of people are ashamed of who they really are. From what I've seen and studied in basic psychology, the more someone attempts to gain the attention of others, the more likely they are to feel insecure about their true self. Sometimes the desire for attention is a way for a person with low self-esteem to validate their existence. So it would make sense for some people who are in the public eye to seek attention, but feel they have to pretend to be something different in order to get it.

Also, if we're talking about hollywood, etc. actors/actresses are often given a 'corporate image' that they are expected to portray whenever they're on camera. A 'celebrity' is more of an externally defined product than a genuine person.

Actors and actresses aren't wearing their acts 24/7. They put it on for the movie, then take it off when work is done..

When a person is asked an unexpected question -- the neurology of their psyche has to construct an answer/reply on the spot. There is no time to rehearse, and as they construct it, they give off the signals of their psyche on their face/hands/body.

There are some shows like Lopez Tonight that are scripted and those aren't very reliable, but many interviews found online are freeform which allows for the observation of their mind at work.

Regarding selling a corporate image, that is true to an extent. There is some distortion in that but as I said before they'd play-up that image through their fundamental nature. As they do the rest of their life. There really isn't any moment where a type isn't being true to their type -- just behaving more akin to some stereotypes of other types.

A 'celebrity' is more of an externally defined product than a genuine person.
I don't think this is true. I find most celebrities to be genuine people - as much as the rest of us, anyhow - I've met commoners in my life who act precisely like they do in a natural state.

If you look enough, you can find a celebrity-identical for every person you know irl -- in terms of mannerisms. That's when it becomes clear that celebrities are just normal people being put in front of a camera. :)

@Auburn

umm.. it was not my intention to dispute the fact that a person's type is visible even when they are acting. My comment was a response to what Montresor said about the likelihood of individuals in the media having a desire to present their true selves to the public. It may be that a lot of famous individuals want to behave as completely themselves all the time, but as I said, they usually attempt to play up a certain persona or character when on camera. This persona and all the fame and expensive clothes, etc. is the 'celebrity product' of the person.. something not necessarily intrinsic to the individual. When they get home, or perhaps even in an informal interview, they're no doubt true to their nature.

If you look enough, you can find a celebrity-identical for every person you know irl -- in terms of mannerisms.
I think that can probably be said for everyone ^^

Perhaps, and this is probably true in some cases. However, in the case of an individual who is unsure of their intrinsic identity, they might like having a replacement persona to present to the world.

Yes, well actually my comments were not an all encompassing objection to video typing. I was only commenting on your claim that in a video the person did not have an opportunity to mask themselves. I was merely saying that some people are extremely good at acting - which is not necessarily the same as masking. If a video was not live, it could have been practiced or edited enough that it might not show their true selves - however, you have commented on how this can be indicative itself on a type.

My objection to the celebrity typing is more based on a lot of people on other sites selecting videos of various actors, singers etc that tended to be part of their act and try to type them on that video alone, which was clearly NOT their natural selves. Also, using examples of what a politician said as an indication of their type, when it was known that a speech writer had been used to phrase what was said.

@Mysty - Yeah, in general the way most people 'type' celebrities is via their topic of fame and possibly their quotes. Like believing someone who is a pop singer *has* to be some sort of extrovert. Or using Einstein quotes to determine his type.

@The Introvert - Stephen Colbert is a very articulate Te user. You know that spicey/snappy satire he has? That, as seen in him, is trademark Te sense of humor. His thinking is very immediate and quick, which is also Te. Commonly this quickness is what gives Te users the bad name of being dismissive and assholes, but if it's said in humor & they master using humor with it, they're much more well received - As Colbert is. He's quite similar to Robert Downey Jr (Te+Ni).

I agree with this, except in the case of Stephen Colbert. The man is a genius (and never out of character).
How about robin williams? He is pretty much insane with his Fe/Ni combo. Same with Johnny depp, you can't hide a genuine infp.

Johnny Depp is an INFP, period. Did you base your typing off his movie performances? That's the only way I can think of why you'd typed him as such...

I've watched probably over 2 hours of interviews of him before... :)

Now if by "INFP" you mean he's an introverted intuitive feeling perceiver, then I guess I agree. He fits the "profile" of an "INFP" according to MBTI. But his functions and his psychology is not Fi+Ne. He does not lead his psyche with introverted feeling, but introverted sensation. He's a traditionalist and a very nostalgic soul who flows through life.

If you hear interviews on how he preps for a part, you'll see it's very much Si-based. He doesn't push his Fe beliefs though. He's passive. As such it's not possible to identify Fe vs Fi in him via MBTI. That part I identified visually as I've seen the exact same pattern in many other SiFe that do push their Fe. But I realize this is hard to differentiate without understanding physically what Fe and Fi look like, so I'll digress for now!

He strikes me as having incredibly strong Fi values, which is why I think of him as a "very genuine" INFP. Maybe he is better in touch with his Si than most INFPs, I'd just say he's well-adjusted than calling him Si lead though. And I think it's his good looks that makes his apparent "Fe" come out. He just seems all INFP to me.

Edit: DiCaprio is an ISFJ though which I hope you agree with, I'm sure there are interviews with those two together for comparison

Agh, Ink.. now u has me all confused. Going back and reviewing Depp I'm unsure. The Si is definitely there, and quite heavy, but I'll leave that one open for now. Leonardo DiCaprio has that cunning charm of an Fe, definitely. Compare him to other cunning badass actors like Denzel Washington. I would say he's Ni+Fe.
