Goodbye-ee, Goodbye-ee, Wipe the tear, baby dear, from your eye-ee Tho' it's hard to part, I know, I'll be tickled to death to go, Don't cry-ee, don't sigh-ee, There's a silver lining in the sky-ee! Bon Soir, old thing! Cheerio! Chin-Chin

When a new member comes they don't necessarily know the official rules though those tend to be the same from forum to forum. They are given time to learn the feel of the forum and (if they care to) read the thread about forum rules. If they continuously infringe on the rules a member points it out to them. Often an admin doesn't even have to step in. In a lot of ways this ensures that the forum adheres to what the forum members what it to be. If the new member continues to infringe and cause forum upheaval gradually more and more members will start making complaints. If you follow Deagle's actions over the last few months you'll notice various members pointing out his lack of couth and respect. I was not the first to point out his spamming youtube videos after all. Eventually the admins take note of the changing tide of the general forum populace's opinion toward this member and he/she will get banned if they don't straighten up.

Not bad; although, being INTP-orientated, it's slightly less organized than that.

At least this is how I've seen these things turn out over the year that I've been here. If the forum populace starts sharpening their pitch forks and collecting torches the Admins kick out the irritant before the lynch mob gets organized.

It gets rather like the Blackadder version of the Great War sometimes...

Oh, we don't want to lose you but we think you ought to go.
For your King and your country both need you so.
We shall want you and miss you
But with all our might and main
We shall cheer you, thank you, bless you
When you come home again.

Minus the last sentiment.

Anyway, Desert Smeagle is sorry as evidenced here, and I am sorry --- in a general, non-specific, detached fashion. We are all sorry. In deference to Smeagle's fondness for Youtube...

Um, I'm pretty sure this entire thread was mostly a discussion of whether or not Smeagle's ban was justified. You certainly wouldn't get that sort of thing on non-INTP forums (usually)... or at least not to this degree. I kind of like it. :)

But based on Claver's post, I'd say the decision has been made, and now we're all slowly losing interest and drifting off into other conversations, as we so often do.

Also, yay for Raptor Jesus (and the Space Pope).

Last night I had some really weird dreams - one of them involved Claverhouse being super evil. Really and truly evil, and wicked, and murderous, and out to get us all. It was strange; I don't really remember much beyond that, but I do remember thinking how he'd always seemed a little dangerous on the forums, but never had I dreamed (ha) that he would turn out to be so hugely cruel. We were all running in fear from him, and trying to avoid his fiery gaze of death.

Just thought I'd warn you all.

(Actually, this was relevant on another thread but I can't remember which so I just stuck it in here.)

Man, that was by far the best one of his YouTube videos (I didn't watch many of them though). I LOL'd more than once. Kinda feel bad for defending his ban now.

+1 vote for letting Smeagle back. (I'd make a terrible mod)

Agreed.

This place has really gotten less audacious.
I have never really seen a time when it was.

My first perception of this forum was that there were basically no rules and everyone here is extremely logical and sane (which, I was apparently wrong on both accounts)... so I could be biased.

THIS sorry. :)
YouTube - Its too late too apologize???

Not sure if thats the best way to say sorry.
I realize you said you were sorry quite a few times, but did you ever ever say you were VERY sorry? Listen, if you were truely sorry you would apologize like any adult would. Speaking of adults you claimed, "We are all adults here." Not true. I know quite a few children who are not adults. How do you know some of them aren't here? I'd like to hear your definition here of here here as your definition may not be the same here as what we think here is here.

Another question: I like your beard but why it is so white? Are you prematurely gray? My beard is white but I earned it. What did you do?

I wasn't calling you a dude. I use 'dude' as a general term oftentimes, as when one says "Yo" or "Hey."

But on that... are you not a guy?

The G. You don't know how much I appreciate your sorrow. I hope you don't wallow in it. Wallowing is one thing but shame is another. Do you feel ashamed? If you don't maybe you should be. I feel ashamed. So ashamed and I want to share it.

*sigh* The worst part about this is that I feel like he's sincere, yet he still curses and uses racist/derogatory remarks in his apologies. It's like he doesn't know any better, yet his actions still warrant the ban on some level. DO WE REALLY HAVE FREE WILL?!? It seems that destiny is against Smeagle on this one. Oh, the agony!:storks:

  2. have you continued with sarcasm

  4. are you thinking I insulted you and are trying to back out
  5. have you been captured by aliens

The Goe4. I'm sorry you thought it was #1, #2, #4, #6, or #7. I'm sorry to say it was #5 but I forget as they gave me amnesia for security reasons. I say this in all sincerity as I am about as sincere as I'm sorry.

Sorry.

It’s just the way I thought my post could be incorrectly understood. However if you speak in all sincerity then you must not be sorry for if you were captured by aliens and they gave you amnesia you would not be sincere then as you wouldn’t know. So I am sorry that you are saying you are sincere being insincere (although it may be true you wouldn’t know [making you insincere{although possibly correct}]) thus making your self not sorry.

The Goe4. Don't know if you agree with me but I think this one sorry thread and I'm sorry for that even though since responsibility is shared here I'm certain I shouldn't have to be the 1st to apologize though it could happen that way.

If your post or my post is at all misunderstood that would be a reason all the more for being sorry. My supposition that those aliens gave me amnesia is a conjecture. I do not know that for sure but that doesn't negate my sincerity. I'm sorry that happened and I'm sorry you have your doubts and would come to the wrong conclusion. Are you sincere about that? If not, I'm sorry. I have no control over alien abduction nor what you would say about it. This leaves me no choice but to say I'm sorry about the whole sorry situation.

Now I don't know what you mean I was just being picky about the impossibility of you being sincere if that wasn’t the case (and I was assuming it wasn’t) but I am sure it doesn’t take away the real sorriness only the fictional sorriness that wasn’t there.

But to sum it up neither of us have a clue what the other is talking about and should probably stop.

I think it would be interesting too, just to say exactly how much he annoyed others. I never saw many of his more annoying posts, so I might be biased. He reminded me somewhat of myself, actually. But I suppose that, in hindsight, he is not very much like me...

Here's a thought this banning caused in me. Please keep in mind this is a bit of a surface impression of which I'm not very certain of. I realize I could (probably) be very wrong in how I'm approaching this, but here goes:

It seems to me this particular banning has set a precedence that it's okay, or even somewhat necessary, to ban someone simply for being universally (or at least mostly) disliked. It doesn't appear to me that Smeagle explicitly broke any specific rules (hmm, perhaps spamming though? I'm not sure). It was suggested he was 'trolling' but I don't think that can be verified -- it seemed to me more like a lack of self-control/filtering than a conscious effort to annoy. And even if you thought he was trolling or whatever else, I think it's simply the fact he was disliked that earned him a ban. If he was a well-liked or respected member, he'd get away with being annoying, and likely without comment, since people are less-inclined to call out an experienced and/or respected person. In fact, I'd daresay people would be afraid to do so if he was more respected.

That's not to say his banning really bothers me much. I think it's unfair, but that's life, no worries. I'm just curious what this means in terms of principle. I'm curious if this means being disliked puts you closer to the banhammer, or if a few precious defenders would be enough to save you from that fate. I'm also curious that if a long-term member behaved like him, would they get a similar reaction?

I had no problem with him, or anyone, but don't mistake this for being upset at the mods or anything. I'm mostly just intensely curious about groups/communities and how they function, including how they differentiate their treatment of people based on various criteria. Every time someone is banned here, I tend to view it as an opportunity to analyze a small snippet of human group behavior.

Please take the above with a grain of salt and chew on it if you'd like. Or just rip it to shreds if you prefer.

I've never really talked about how he sees INTPf so he might have another opinion about this, but I always envisioned this forum as a meeting place for and about INTPs. I always thought about it like a club.
Just like the hosting company, that provides the infrastructure for this forum, must obey the laws of the country it resides in, Ragnar has to obey whatever regulations they in turn impose upon him and again, regular users have to obey his - the forum's - rules. INTPf is neither independent nor impartial. It is no governmental organization that tries to achieve maximal neutrality. Do not misunderstand this, it does not mean that we are arbitrary or follow any ideology; it simply means that we see it as our task to provide the greatest possible functionality for INTPf.
As with any other kind of society, there are written laws and unwritten laws.
The unwritten laws basically come down to don't be a dick. While in real life no court would punish you for making fun of someone's miscarriage, here we can - and we do, if it becomes rampant. Usually we try to interfere as little as possible.
I can only say what I said in some similar threads: being here is a privilege, not a right. All of this here costs real money. If you don't like it, you're free to open your own forum that follows your own rules and install whatever -cracy you like.

Yeah but remember that one week he was on anti-depressants and that when it got bad he was not warned by a mod ect ect. He could (and I use that term loosely) have stopped especially as his system adapted to the anti-depressants. And I agree with echoplex I am not angry with any of the mods it is your forum just saying it seems unfair.

Nope: feelings en masse are not stable enough to affect public policy --- and insofar as I was aware I didn't dislike him [ which doesn't mean I thought him suited here ] --- any more than one can base economic policy on whatever most people think ( by internet standards: 1/3 would abolish all pensions & welfare; 1/3 would take state control over private industry; 1/3 would increase credit and borrow from their unborn grandchildren ).

It's enough to be unliked by a moderator sufficiently that they think the place would be improved without one.

Back when they had village local policemen, one such would protect you ftom the mob of dissatisfied neighbours. On the other hand, you would be ill-advised to purposefully or unpurposefully annoy him or browbeat him with your authoritah even if you were the richest man in the county.*

The rest: as Anthile says...

Claverhouse I think you are making a point here. Some of us are currently exploring democracy with Agent_Intellect and others and there are more factors. Moderators are caretakers of this forum. For the well-being of any forum they have more power. So pure democratic vote (I like someone; I don't like someone) is not enough. Moderators would use their judgment to ban or not. That doesn't mean that such action wouldn't be subject to discussion as in any democracy, but moderators would have the final decision.

Yeah I am not for democracy I was joking but I am for dictatorship (if I am the dictator):D

EDIT: But I would like to see the results of a vote just for fun.
