Bit of a rant but ill think you'll understand ;

I bought a metal detector not that long ago thinking it would be a perfect hobby . How wrong was I ! Initially I thought it would just involve me walking along the beach finding old coins and random stuff enjoying the solitude and the fresh air . But what it mostly involved was digging a 6 foot hole only to find a old tent peg 90% of the time . Kids following you wanting to dig every signal you hit also everyone that walks past you wants to lecture you about how they always wanted a metal detector or jokingly ask if I have found their watch or gold ring. I can also guarantee the minute you hear a beep and start digging you'll look up to find a crowd of at least five people around you

Sod this the thing is for sale right now! I hate people and social interaction's at this kind of magnitude. Especially being the centre of attention with a crowd watching your every move.

So these days I stick to collecting zippo's and playing on my computer experimenting with Linux trying to learn to code.

What other hobbies could you suggest that involves just me and no one else, especially random folks that just seem to harass you? Also if it involves going outside that would be great.

Thanks :)

How much are you selling it for?

Take up shooting. Now some people will try to talk to you, however I find holding a gun and glaring at someone solves that problem. On the flip side if you decided you want to be friends it's easy. It's surprising how many friendly people you meet while holding a gun.

Chek out: Geocaching. (google it)
Fun. Outside. Non- to Low-Level interaction with humanoids (and mostly through the Geocaching app).

Or...

Dig into math - then walk around with a notepad and create (mathematical) models of observed human-interactions (without interacting with them your self) or observed human behavior in traffic --- or tree / leaf patterns, or sand patterns on your beach or cloud-patterns, or rain droplets patterns on your window, or whatever you find interesting. Most of it can be done with middle-level math knowledge and is fun and very giving and your notepad (when filled up with weird formulas, arrows and symbols) will look like a piece of art and will be very aesthetically pleasing to look through. Plus when people hear you're doing math, they leave you alone.

Or...

Take up skateboarding!

I've enjoyed most hobbies I tried, but not Geocaching which was horribly repellent. Tried it once, a box hidden under a bridge on a stream near my house. Couldn't find it and didn't want to eventually. Just got hot, tired, dirty and it felt pointless.

To OP, try Photography, especially landscape. People will leave you alone for the most part.

Photography's actually a really good idea, I've done it a couple and no one bothered me at all.

If you have a small camera. If you get a professional kit (pro DSLR) then the rate at which people will bug you will go up. I've had people ask me if I was a professional photographer, tell me to get a permit (professionals have to pay to take pictures in some parks), and the best one is getting a visit from a policeman. I had my camera at my kids school to take some pictures, and some idiot kid thought I must be some kind of child pornographer and - ironically - took a picture of me on his cell phone.

People are really fucked up when it comes to big cameras.

So these days I stick to collecting zippo's and playing on my computer experimenting with Linux trying to learn to code.

I have an abundance of hobbies currently, one of the above being one. I don't mind sharing. Even if others find those hobbies to be uninspiring, doesn't mean they actually are. For instance, there are 'common' hobbies that people think are great, but sometimes, the most innovative ones are the best.

- Turning old computers into NAT gateways, or hardening a network + clients
- Working out the odds on different types of gambling
- Working with different types of sound synthesizers, or designing FX.
- Landscaping your apartment :P
- Cheap or free online training courses
- Working out the rules of an innovative RPG, or other game genre.

* Being resourceful. Take a look of the things that you have, and finding their untapped potential. Even if something is broken, perhaps it wouldn't take much to get it running again. Even if something is truly useless, perhaps it's still worth money to someone else.

^-> Even though it sounds corny, but it's amazing how much untapped potential there is inherited in the thing that sits reading this message.

I find the intrinsic motivation to do these things, lies in it's quality to effect your position to have something that you really want. For instance, a huge motivation to quit smoking, so I can save money on building a very expensive gaming machine. (an example of effecting motivation)

Maybe you didn't want to because you couldn't?

Objects in the mirror might look closer than they
get a wacom bamboo tablet and start drawing man, it is quite fun, but quite hard if you can't deal with details, i mean, to get a decent work you have to draw/paint for like 4 hours, not my thing.

I've done geocahing in the past and it was pretty fun :)

Photography ? hmm I think I might be buying a decent camera tonight. I live in North Wales so I'm surrounded by the coast and mountains. You'd be surprised how beautiful this place is.

I have been considering to get a drawing tablet for a while now and getting back into animations. I used to play around with clay before and make stop motion animations back when I was like 14.

Anything to do with sports is a no go haha. I don't mind cycling or going for walks but other than that I'd rather stay at home on my pc:p

EDIT : I forgot to say thanks for suggesting NAT lol now I'll probably stay up all night setting it up.

When it comes to sports, surfing or skateboarding if you don't live anywhere with waves. Why?

Few other sports have the amount of freedom of movement along with technical ability and ease. Of course you'll never be better than ISTP's though.

Try De constructing games and coming up with several variations of the way they can be played.

Maybe invent some crazy contraptions and construct them out of wood?

I am a landscape photographer and travel around US & beyond in my pursuit to capture unique moments in Mother Nature. I enjoy it a lot and can't wait until my July trip to Colorado ;)

I travel with a group of photographers and one woman is crazy about geocaching and does it every single day. I've done it a few times with her and it was cool to find something at first but after a few times I lost interest. I see no point of looking for stuff with the purpose of signing piece of paper and logging in online. I can find more productive use of time.

@OP - I live near the beach and someone I knew @ work in 2001 told me that he goes to the beach right after the weekend to look for lost jewelry. He goes at night or early next morning to avoid people.
