I believe a hard take off is imminent once artificial intelligence API acquire mass adoption with open source manufacturing. They will automatically acquire the the ability to bootstrap themselves into the hardware necessary to instantiate social change through BCI. Before then they will have made virtual realities far more complex than anything humans could create. The entire earth will be mapped in real time by 2020 with drones. Most Governments will be in decline and a new social order needs to be established as nanotech allows enhancements that discard most basic needs leading that of self sufficient individuals who telepathically communicate.
