Staying awake naturally: Just try to keep your excitement high about the project. If you start thinking it's boring you're going to slow down and your sleepiness is going to catch up.

That being said... your brain and body changes your body chemistry & chemicals ALL THE TIME. And of course your body is really well designed... thanks for millions of years of evolution and/or divine creator... but the chemicals you can take (caffeine, adderol, vitamin b) don't push your body chemistry that far away from normal. Your choice is tolerable, but a little naive. You know how I suggested to stay excited about the project? Because that'll keep lots of adrenaline in your system, to keep you going. If you don't want chemical or substances, you better not active your natural adrenaline either!

:p

edit// OH you're 14? Well then you should be able to stay up no problem. Back in High School I'd pull all-nighters all the time. Now... at the old age of 22... I find it really difficult.

right, well my opinion on our art lessons is low. i find Da Vinci correct in his opinions on procrastination. all i am doing is polishing a turd with a shit paint set. would listening to very loud, fast, nightclub-like music help, WAIT, my intergrity won't allow me

Working in a very bright illumination? I think it might prevent melatonin's oozing in the blood.

I'm confused, why doesn't your integrity let you listen to loud, fast nightclub-like music?

If it ain't metal, soth don't listen :D.

(I know, it's not entirely acurrate but mostly it is)

Some tips for staying awake:

1. Discomfort. Overeat spicy foods or find some other way of making yourself uncomfortable. The misery may distract some but it will keep you awake.

2. Sugar. A steady intake of candy can keep energy up some.

3. Pause for quick calisthenics. Get the blood pumping!

Discomfort - Remove a Limb, OR Punch myself regularly.

Sugar - Steal chocolate from cupboard, i must be insidious

Calisthetics - A myriad of physically demanded challenges at one hour intervals

Most Importantly - LOTS of Heavy Metal. (just downloaded some Metallica bootlegs, just might do)

Sugar is a chemical ALSO chocolate contains caffeine.

Chocolate contains a variety of substances, some of which have an effect on body chemistry. These include:Chocolate is a mild stimulant to humans mainly due to the presence of theobromine.[78]
You can't escape chemical manipulation! You should admit that you're picking and choosing your chemicals, instead of saying that you're avoiding chemicals. :-P Sorry for being nit-picky but your broad generalizations set me off.

my broad generalisations are born of laziness.

i didn't mean to seem 'straight edge' or anything. just i don't want my parents knowing.
i can't just ask for anti-sleep drugs because they would figure me out.

chocolate is accessible, drugs are not.

Speaking of Sandman...

Wouldn't metal keep you awake? Like some Dragonforce, high-speed metal and everything, since you don't like dance music...

Although I love it, but that's besides the point...gotta respect other peoples' opinions :)

Ohh, I don't like rave either. House is good though. There's just certain sub-genres of modern electronica that I absolutely love, or can't fucking stand. :p

If I need to stay awake I just keep telling myself "I'll sleep in five minutes. I'll sleep in five minutes." That technique works on EVERYTHING for me. Now is never late enough. It has to be in five minutes. That's how I'm getting my Tech. project done right now. I'll stop coloring in the dots in five minutes. Or when I'm halfway done. No, to that line there... well, maybe three-quarters done. Shame not to finish it when I'm so close... oops, better color in the linework...

I'm 85% done this drawing and I owe it to that strategy.

(I'm also 15% not done this drawing and I owe it to this forum. :p)

Hell, WATER is a chemical, and so is the air we breathe. And we're massively complicated chemical compounds held together by the miracle of atomic bonding! Isn't science fascinating? :D Seriously, you shouldn't have a problem. I used to stay up all night just for the hell of it, or to avoid having to get up early. I don't have a problem now, either: I just stay awake and don't lie down. Good luck with your art thing and remember: no art can ever be bad! The bits that don't look like they're meant to be there are expressive.

I was calling BS on Seducer's statement that he didn't want to use any chemicals to stay awake. I are biochemist, I know & enjoy that all of my input, output and reactions are chemical.

I've pulled many all-nighters in the name of art without caffeine. What I usually do is listen to music, my favorite songs that are so good that I just have to listen to the end of it, along with the upbeat power metal. It also helps to take breaks, stretch, pace around, etc. Oh, and orange juice. It's very energizing.
